Quick trip with a big reward
« on: May 16, 2018, 10:13 PM »
Took my old man and my buddy out after work and targetted tautog. Got to our spot by 5:45 and by 7 had our limit of 9 tautog and culled 7. I knew the tide, moon and weather were perfect this evening so made the run and it payed off. 16 keepers and 10 shorts in an hour and we could have kept culling but still needed to fillet and clean the boat. I had the 2 biggest at 5.11 and then a pig at 9.12. All in all smiles on everyones face and a great fish fry to end the night. Priceless.

Those are the trips memories are made of.

That species sure must taste good as they sure aren't pretty! ;D

I have heard of people calling them trash fish because they eat off the bottom... like crabs, muscles, other clams, LOBSTER... Pretty mush the most expensive things at the market. lol

Tautog is my over all favorite fish to eat. Firm yet flaky, juicy, yet not too thick or to thin. Bear battered with Corona is unbeatable. Tonight the big fillet is being baked or grilled.

Same here.

I want to add that I made a rookie mistake and left the net at home, mostly due to rushing to get out there during a work day. So that pig was a good 10 minute fight and I only used my thumb as drag as it was hooked by the thinnest portion of its lip as possible (Avet reel). Finally my buddy was able to grab it by the gills once it tired out.

FYI - If no net, tautog are easier to grab by simply squeezing the eyeballs with your fingers - only recommended if you intend to keep the fish. Little trick I learned while spearfishing.
