Little too rough. Had to come back in. Guess the weatherman was wrong AGAIN. 20 dollars in bait and 10 to launch NADA.

Al, try checking the Michigan City buoy next time. Always good to look before making the trip. Can save you some hassle, or confirm that the forecast is on

It's nice now, but there was a storm that moved thru that had the lake a bit rough this morning

Gonna do both if need be.

And i wont be using soft craws eighther. I never used them back years ago eighther. Have a less expensive and much better bait that works

Seen some posts made elsewhere guys have been picking some perch east of burns harbor. 20-40 foot of water. Nothing astounding but picking away at them.

I was out yesterday and did not see anyone perching in the Michigan city area going out and coming in as far as I could see . They said the last few north blows killed it

Saw two boats head out of MC this morning for perch. I did catch one from the pier. Released to swim another day. (Had to leave pier early due to fireworks set-up. Would be nice if someone would put signs up before I get there in the morning. Not like it was a surprise to the parks dept that we would have to leave. And yes, it was a surprise to me - not from MC and dd not know they were having a show from the pier.)

hi, i'm retired an I perch fish out of mc just about ever day the weather is ok. this has really been a tough year so far. we've caught quite a few big fish an a whole lot of 4 inchers. seems to be a # of year classes missing. finding # of keepers has been tough too. hopefully it will get better. today we caught 15 in 6 hrs, 2 of us. not good.
Title: Re: PERCH
Post by: northrn-duck-assassin on Jul 11, 2017, 04:54 PM
30 fish for 2 of us in 7 hours. Most the action was in the last 4 hours or so, once i got things dialed in and figured out.

Another boat i know had 20 for 2, and another boat had 33 for 3.

22-26 f.o.w.,,, moving around was key.

I know that in that past few years once you anchor and try to get on um they are gone . I've found that you have to drift over them bouncing bottom and just keep finding um when they quit bitting and do another drift. Also I've used small jigs vertical jigging the bottom and noticed the size of fish that I've caught are alot better size

Yes, jigs and flies help greatly produce fish and better fish at that.

Ive never anchored perch fishing, and honestly laugh at everyone that pulls up on me or the small group of boats im with and "plops" the anchor out. Keep moving and you will keep running over the top of fish, perch are very nomadic. Why wait them out, sure its fun and relaxing to be out fiahing, but not in the nasty heat. Lol

Who is getting them and where. My friend is out there now 5 miles east of Mich city light house. Said between 2 guys they might have around 20. Not as big as yesterday and out there a lot longer. Told him to try between 14 and 24 fow by Mt. Baldy. Anyone getting them in this area? Winds going to change from the north tonight. This will probably put a stop on perching for another week. Cant wait o get out.

So Friday the winds will be out of the east according to marine forecast .The water temp is relitively cool  I thought that played a big part in keeping the perch close to shore weather the winds are out of the south or not  the only reason I'm considering going is for that reason and the waves will be reasonable anyone else want to chime in and save me some gas money!

Ok my bad, for the next 4 days where are thunderstorms in the forecast followed by 3 or 4 days of north winds. For me perch fishing is off limits for a week. I for 1 don't want to be on the lake when a thunder storm comes in. I have seen what that lake can do in a few minutes. Be careful if you venture out...

I dont fish east winds because im a huge believer in "east is the least" but if it blows north one day and lats down then the wind switches to a favorable direction the very next day, i will get right back out there and catch them. If it blows north for 2-3 days straight. Yes that scatters the fish and pushes them deeper for a couple days. But a day maybe a little more of north wind doesnt stop me as soon as i get favorable winds.

Thunderstorms, yes watch them. Got caught in one out there last week, wasnt fun. Wind and waves dont bother me with a storm coming cause i will run in quick, but its the lightning that bothers me. I plan on getting out this weekend for some gold. Work is stopping me from tomorrow or today. Lol

Hey sorry it took so long to answer. It sucked. Definitely need a boat lol. Fished from 5:15am til 10am and all I got was a smallmouth and 2 goby.....and the smallie came in the first 15 mins! Only saw 3 other guys fishing and none caught fish

There were 8 bird watchers/photographers piled up on top of each other on the back of the lighthouse with their eyes absolutely glued to the breakwall/government pier. They explained to me that the day before there was a sighting of a bird on that breakwall that has never been seen in Indiana before. I guess it only sticks to the west coast from the shores of Alaska and Canada all the way down California. So I guess it's absolutely unheard of for one to be over here. It was a wandering taddler or something along those lines

I, too, am planning on my first trip out to catch perch on the big lake.  Small Smokercraft boat. Need to watch wind/waves closely. Any bait opinions. Thinking about using minnows. Going out of MC.  Should I go to Mt. Baldy or the Condos? Any help is appreciated.  Back-up plan in case of big waves is to hit Pine Lake.

Post by: Boomer on Jul 26, 2017, 10:00 PM
Went out today from MC. First time on the "Big Water" with my little boat. Kept an eye on the weather. Less than one foot waves and a south wind. Made for some good drifting with my heavy anchor bouncing along the bottom. Our depth sounder had trouble but a nice guy from Ft. Wayne kept telling us there were fish in the area. Shiners for bait. Kept jigging off the bottom. Key depth was 50 ft. Son caught his personal best perch: 12.5 inches. (He will do better hopefully before he goes back to school.) Ended the day with a respectable 25 fish for two people. I would say five or six were really nice; about ten were pretty good and a few average fish and the rest swallowed the hook and were kept.

Several people kept saying the fish were not feeding but most of the fish we caught were spitting up minnows and/or had minnows in their stomachs. Could it be there is plenty of food and they were just stuffed?

A really good fish dinner is in the future.

I am guessing that's exactly what was going on. Lots of bait around makes it hard for yours to stand out as well

What a beautiful day to go on a boat ride. Fished 6 1/2 hours and only 1 4 inch perch. Fished west of portage east to blue tower. From 46 to 14 feet. NADA....Talked to about 8 others and nobody caught anything. The north winds must of moved them deep. By Wednesday they should be back.

I am off tomorrow, but the reports I have heard today is worse than yesterday. Find if hard to believe it could be worse than yesterday because I talked to around 8 boats and no one caught ANY. I was hoping to give it another go in the morning but with the thunderstorms that are in the forecast and all the bad fishing reports I have heard think I will wait.

Water is set up pretty badly right now, its in the low 70s top to bottom all the way out to 50 feet.  That scatters the fish

Big cold front coming in probably won't help stabilize anything, either. been a rough year for perch fishing, just never have gotten stable water and weather
