Spider Rigging Hurshtown Reservoir
« on: May 13, 2014, 08:46 PM »
Went out with Bricker today and checked out the spider rigging setup first hand. Hurshtown a great place to start spider rigging imo as it has straight shoreline with rocks that cover the break line off shore. Easy to follow the contour since it's straight so using the trolling motor and running rods at the same time wasn't too difficult. I'm not a long rod guy at all but I found the 10'6 rods not to be difficult at all once I quit reeling in line too far. Started with 2 rods each and by the end of the day I was able to watch three while Adam vertical jigged for them with his vertical jigger. He also drove the trolling motor and by that time the winds were kicking and white caps were washing over the d**e on opposite shore.
Each rod had a 3/4 oz pinch on water gremlin split shot three foot above a longer size 8 hook. Couple rods had wigglers and other rods had minnows. Crappies liked both and the smallmouth liked the wigglers. We ended up getting a double limit in a few hours and continued to just have fun throwing back every fish caught after that. We finally decided to take off as the storms approached. Great relaxing way to fish for sure and fun watching the soft noodle rod tips just dip down into the water.  Again it's the perfect place to start practicing spider rigging. Just decrease your number of rods if it gets overwhelming or fish biting too fast. Also kept it simple by just having one hook on each line.

We were close enough to shore and I took that picture when we got setup. Winds weren't as bad then.

Forgot to mention a basic fish finder helps with keeping the boat at the right depth and knowing if fish are in the area. Few times we got too close bottomed out the split shot.  Rocks covered in green moss. Crappie didn't care for the moss minnow combo. If a rod quit getting bit I'd check it. Bait was either gone or moss. Once we figured out the right depth was able to use the sinker as a line marker. It would be just below by last guide on the 10' rod. So made for a good reference point

Nice work! I fished hurshtown Friday and Sunday and did alright on the smallies, nothing special though. I didn't realize it had such a solid crappie population. I was planning to head back this weekend and try for some smallies and eyes again, but now I think I'll go for some crappie instead! Thanks for the info

Awesome!  I want to try that sometime.  It looks like it would be a relaxing way to fish and bring in a bunch.
