Title: Halibut
Post by: Mikey on Jun 10, 2010, 10:56 AM
Caught this 41 pounder yesterday. What a blast out on the Yankee Capts. Fish of a lifetime.

Thanks A.A. Caught him on a slightly modified Slov jig. Mostely like reeling in lead but he made 3 or 4 50/60 foot runs back to the bottom. It was fun listening to the mate explain what was happening. First it was obviously a foul hooked cod then my drag was too loose.  :) But after 10 minutes he said alright I'm curious enough to wait with the gaff. I guess you never really do know what your gonna hook out there. Another funny thing is it was double with a 2 pound pollack, that thing must have been crapping hisself all the way up.   :)

Thanks guys. Crew said it wasn't quite big enough to steak so had it filleted. They were like the size of a mans vest.  :) . Gave one whole side to the guys who came out with me. Just made a simple broil lemon mayo herb butter it was delicous. I'm thinking of doing a poor mans lobster with some of it (steam it and dunk it in butter  ;D ). It was cool seeing some of the old timers on the boat come around to see it and ask about it. Made me realize how special it was, not to mention it was a total haddock slam. One guy (using bait) had 2 doz haddock and a doz cod. I took it a bit easy after the halibut and still had close to 20 cod and haddock all on the jig and pink shrimp teaser. Taking the pool $ just made it a grand slam, a day I wont soon forget.

WOWZA!!!         That's an impressive fish and one to be proud of, man. I wrote a response earlier but it didn't get through. You must have been pumped. When I worked on the Boston fish Pier, the local boats would bring one of those things into port once a month, an they're the draggers!! That is a fish of a lifetime. There just aren't many out there anymore. Congrats Mike.

I fish with Mike as often as we can, which isn't that often because of family obligations. When we do fish together, we always seem to do well. Mike's a good fisherman. The other night before he left, he mentioned the possibility of him getting a halibut, but that it was not likely. LOL Nice when you prove yourself wrong, huh Mike??? By the way, that's an awesome picture.

Thanks for the kind words Joe. Once in a while everything comes together. Its not easy catching something worth posting on this sight with all the good fisherman. I'm glad I could finally come through.  :) Still hoping you get out with me for stripers some night. Looks like, by the posts, theyre in pretty good.  Thanks NHTF.      Mike

Hi Mikey,

You probably would never expect a halibut recipe suggestion from someone that lives nearly smack dab in the middle of the USA, but here is a good one for halibut and other fish fillets.  Marinate fillets (1/2" to 3/4" thick) in soy sauce and Roses lime juice.  Adjust to taste, but about three Tbs soy sauce to two Tbs Roses lime juice.  Fish marinates quickly, so 20 minutes is usually long enough (longer is fine).  Grill the fillets on the BBQ grilll.  Can use foil if necessary on the grill.  Don't over cook!  Enjoy!

Note:  Roses lime juice is the kind the bar uses - it is really sweet.
This marinade works well on mahi mahi, ect.

Have a great day,
Keith

Hi, new guy here

Great catch, thats some fine eating, hope you kept the cheeks and throat. Good meat there. I have seen two atlantic halibut in 20 years, in fact I was standing next to the guys that caught them but no joy for me:)
They seem to be making abit of a slow comeback as the last few years there have been an increasing  number caught.

Wow! Nice catch! That would wear my little arms right out!
Congrats (and the pool was a plus too, eh?)!

Keith from Nebraska: Doesn't matter where you're from; that sound like a nice flavor. Never thought to use lime juice on fish...why not? I use lemon...it's not far off.

Just a note, it's "Roses" lime juice which is very sweet, almost like syrup .  I think that makes a big difference over "lime juice".

Happy eating!

Keith

that is absolutly awesome i have fantasized many times about hooking up with a halibut but the odds of it are real slim not alot of those guys lurking around this far south ...not only did you get the rarest catch and the pool ..but you saved 5 grand ..now you don't have to go to alaska to catch a halibut .thats awesome mike !!!!!!
i know you hit the charter boats alot and you absolutly deserve it mike !!!!!!!!congrats !!!
