Title: Big Carp Chronicles
Post by: rgfixit on May 15, 2021, 08:38 AM
Thought I’d share some carp pics. I’ve been learning Euro style carping the past few years and I’m finally having some success.
Yesterday from the boat.

(https://i.postimg.cc/KRTMZzYB/53-DCE743-C861-44-F4-A775-A6-FA484492-BE.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/KRTMZzYB)

Last night I put out a pound or so of boiled feed corn in an area of the canal with really nice bank access. Went down at 5:am this morning. Shot out some pack bait and  canned sweet corn. ( I made a bait launching sling shot that works great)
A nice 10-12 lb.
(https://i.postimg.cc/MvrqrbwY/2-AC9-C7-DE-4-B88-4-ED5-9442-A6-DD8-FCE8209.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/MvrqrbwY)

This one was probably my PB. I had a devil of a time lifting it out of the water. Had to be 25+ ( I’m buying a scale and weighing sling)
(https://i.postimg.cc/ZBYQS2Fv/4-F45170-D-3078-4-B86-858-C-A8-D884-AAF7-F4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ZBYQS2Fv)

Another in the 15 lb range.
(https://i.postimg.cc/9wrN49kW/92881219-9-EA1-449-B-AA63-6-F9-DFAB06437.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/9wrN49kW)

I’m using a pack bait made from Panko, whole corn and strawberry Jello with the liquid from the corn and a little water to make a nice packable mix.On a hair rig I put 2 kernels of boiled field corn and 1   Silicone imitation kernel. The boiled corn is soaked in pure vanilla and water. I also add a smear of ProCure Gel Corn scent.

I caught all three fish on the same bait. Meaning I didn’t change or add to that bait at all for 3 big fish. The little fish kept nibbling on the hair rig but couldn’t get anything off of it.

I’m using bank sticks I made with Lixada bite alarms and I bought myself a super comfy bank chair from Wally World.

(https://i.postimg.cc/K1C2NGbc/83-DE076-B-86-D4-4347-B397-2-B611907-DF56.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/K1C2NGbc)

(https://i.postimg.cc/K11bBKds/9-F6082-F0-383-C-4-F9-F-9-F8-D-D0169-EC7-FB80.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/K11bBKds)

The rod I’m using is an Ugly Stick 8’ heavy catfish rod. The reel is a reasonably priced Quantum Optix Qx 40 with about 200 yds of 30 lb Spyder Wire Easy Braid.

Never thought I’d need anything this heavy but these fish are brutes. I’m sure I’m going to tear up the reel and have my eye on a Penn salt water bait runner reel.

For weight I’m using 20-66 gram method feeders. They’re a sliding weight that I can fill with pack bait above the hair rig.  The hair rig caught all 3 fish in the lower right corner of the lip. I can’t explain why it was always the right side, but it was.

It’s taken me some time to get this style of fishing down and I’ve had many a skeptical day. But done right it works like nothing else I’ve ever attempted for big carp.

If anyone wants any info just let me know. Until then I’ll keep posting my successes and failures.

Carpe diem !

6 in 3 hours. Couple pretty big ones and the rest are average .....I guess. There was one piece of log I was trying to pull in with a rope and some weight but I couldn’t get ahold of it. The first carp took care of it for me. It went straight for it and wrapped it up. Got the carp and the log all at once. Thank heavens for 30 lb braid.

I’ve decided to go buy a collapsible cart. I’m getting too old to carry all the stuff I’m using. Used to be able to drive right to the area I’m fishing, but the town did a major  clearing along the shoreline and now prohibit any motor vehicles.

Just as well anyway. They did a really nice job and the local rednecks used to tear up the grass doing doughnuts. The slobs used to trash the place with litter too. Don’t see any of that now either.

I like the cart and the carp!

Where did you get the cart? It looks slick.

Walmart. They have two or  three types. This one has the wide wheels and is the biggest. $70.  Couldn’t  build one for that.

Made an attachment for the rod and bite alarm. Everything is in the car for the morning. Won’t be able to fish this spot for much longer. The weeds will take over and I’ll move back to the boat or some other shore spots.

The fish are a riot. My arms are a bit sore.

Good, bad and ugly today.
The good!👍
Managed one football of a carp.

(https://i.postimg.cc/hXQn4pwy/02-E591-CA-7620-4334-BE02-E27-A92306-A5-D.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hXQn4pwy)

The cart worked great.

(https://i.postimg.cc/Cn05kWyx/CEF9-F34-E-4-CF3-44-FE-BBEF-B963-FAD9-DA00.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Cn05kWyx)

The Bad!🤬
The rod holder looked great but didn’t work well. Too short and presented too much tension on a bite. Had 4 dropped bites. Back to the bank sticks for now.

The ugly👎
Then I had a good run and set the hook only to snap off my whole rig. Had a pretty good hang up yesterday and forgot to re-tie the rig.

Can’t win them all.

Decent morning carpin’. Tried a couple different rigs that were suggested on YouTube. Nothing worked as well as my original setup.
  Couple of male torpedos.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pyHYkPnV/B08-C00-D8-FD67-4497-84-F5-16-A81-F2-F6540.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/pyHYkPnV)

Another football female.
(https://i.postimg.cc/xcjGDgRW/E60-AADBC-6-D3-D-47-BA-B63-F-07-D1-C68-CAF82.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/xcjGDgRW)

The males were really hard fighters. Took off like freight trains. Ordered some hooks and setup materials to make my own hair rigs. I’m using some store bought right now.

Bank sticks worked way better that the rod holder I tried for the cart. I’ll end up with a rod pod of some sort eventually. They’ll get into the spawn pretty soon. The females are bursting with eggs. When that happens I’ll switch over to catfish again.

Fun morning anyway.

great info   thanks for  posts, i love carpinn in spring and summer with grandkids cant beat it for sure , theyve lost quite a few poles over the years. lol when they really get rippin i put a run away chunk of clothes line from their pole to their chair, cause they seem to have a tendency to loose interest , and when the bite happens gives em a few seconds to get there without loosing equipment. ..   once again thanks for post , goodluck and enjoy the CARP,,, nothin like it.

It was initially because some "geniuses" thought they were invasive and destructive.
Well, they may not be true "native" fish, but they are far less destructive than any other non-native fish or aquatic transplants (plant, fish, crustacean or shellfish).
No offense to bow anglers, but to me it looks more like what someone who can't fish would do.
Carp fishing, if nothing else, teaches you what patience in fishing is like......and then you get a strike and you get that rush!

Carp fishers are certainly unique. The Europeans pay big bucks to fish ponds and small lakes while we have more opportunities than they can imagine for the price of a fishing license. And...when you’re an old fart like me with a lifetime license.......you don’t have to pay anybody you don’t want to, to fish.

That said I just got some tackle I ordered form Bigcarp.com. Great company to deal with fast reasonable shipping and a huge inventory of carpin’ stuff. Based out of Oklahoma.

I’m making some “blowback rigs” to try with the method feeders. They have a full selection of Korda carp components that you’ll never find on the shelf of any big box or mom and pop store.

If anyone has other sources for carp gear, please post some info . I’m sure your fellow carpers will appreciate it. I know I will.

My setup is as simple as it gets, lol.  Bank sticks with clip on alarms, 7' MH Ugly Stick Big Game rods, Yoshikawa 6500 bait runners, simple hair rigs and boilies.  Pre-baiting helps.  I also religiously use pack bait.

Nothing else today. Going to try a couple different places this week. Put some fake corn in a vial with pure vanilla extract and water. They really key in on it and the little fish can’t get it off the hair even though they try. Probably gobies or gills I’d guess.

Thanks guys. It’s always fun when stuff works.
Tied up some rigs today. Took a couple hours to find my bench.

Anyway, here’s the tackle I’m using to do these “blow back rigs” . I’m sure there’s a thousand ways to do these, this is just what I’ve been doing.
(https://i.postimg.cc/z3dLKqLs/86-C2-DF47-EF01-4-F2-B-9-CF2-7-E423519-EE62.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/z3dLKqLs)
30 lb removable skin leader
Anti tangle sleeves
Korda #6 wide gape X hooks
Medium rig rings
Medium shrink tube. This is some kind of low temperature silicone shrink tube. Not what I’m used to seeing.
The little orange tool strips the coating off the leader and exposes just braid.

So....strip about 3” of the skin off the leader and tie a knot less snell on the hook
(https://i.postimg.cc/YhbJtysf/18-E32380-F71-E-4-E8-A-9177-3-EC8037-E372-C.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/YhbJtysf)
Slide the rig ring on the hook and tie the tag end to it with a simple overhand knot. The ring should be just at the bend of the hook and not able to travel around the bend. Tie an overhand knot to make the hair.
(https://i.postimg.cc/hzs0VNx2/49-A7-FFB9-4-F22-4226-ADE3-1-AAB6720-BF78.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/hzs0VNx2)
It about a 1” piece of shrink tube and slid it onto the leader and over the knot
(https://i.postimg.cc/bs9qkTFs/C98-B6-FE6-C270-46-E1-B463-FD1-ECFA96803.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/bs9qkTFs)

Thread an anti tangle sleeve onto the leader small end towards the hook. I use a bobbin threader to do this.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Jy9f9Ddf/9-D708644-3848-4658-8-EF7-51-B1-F5-CA0282.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Jy9f9Ddf)

Tie an overhand knot in the end of the leader and attach a good swivel
(https://i.postimg.cc/PC8sKQSW/391-DE0-DE-CD0-C-45-FA-822-A-1-C3-D48-F0-CA7-B.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PC8sKQSW)

Slide the anti tangle sleeve over the lower eye of the swivel, gently heat the shrink tube holding the leader at 45* to the hook and let it cool. Doesn’t take much.boiling water works very well.
(https://i.postimg.cc/2321fCrH/D4-E54623-D1-A6-44-A1-9217-784-C2-B20191-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/2321fCrH)

There you have it.

The carp shooters around here stick mostly to the bays. Carp in the canal are pretty much left alone except for those who fish for them.

Went 3 for 3 this morning. Only fished for a couple hours. Got very warm .....fast.

(https://i.postimg.cc/grGTVhSr/0-C44-B9-BA-D129-4717-BFAD-12-CF5-BC4-B989.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/grGTVhSr)

This one was a tank. Took me almost all the way across the canal. Drag wouldn’t hold him.

Decided to upgrade my carp reel. Ordered a KastKing SharkyIII bait runner reel. Should get it tomorrow. Gonna spool it up with Spyderwire Stealth Smooth 30lb.  I’ll pair it with my 8’ Ugly Stick Catfish rod. Reel will be here tomorrow.

I’ll give it e review after I use it. Gonna be a hot one here today so I’m planning to spend some time at the fly bench. Need to tie up some bass and pike flies to try. I’ll probably take the 10’ 6 wt out tomorrow morning at first light and see what I can chase down.

Got the new reel today. It’s a big bugger.

First impression is it’s smooth as bee’s knee. No detectable backlash, the bait runner and drag seem to work very well. The main drag seems very smooth as well. Big, comfortable handle. Plenty of leverage. Came in a nice bag with a spare spool and extra fiber washers for the drag system.
I spooled it up with 30 lib spiderwire EZ braid. Couldn’t find any of the Stealth Smooth.

Looking forward to tomorrow morning…..early…..probably be done by 7:30 am.

Have my eye on a 9’ ugly stick medium action rod for playing with these beasts.

This was in the marina and main lake.
Good luck with the new rig tomorrow!

Got out early this morning, around 4:30. Put out some pack bait and corn and set up. Went 1 for 3 and that was that. They’re going into spawn now. They were thrashing around and cruising the shorelines.

I’ll probably try one more time tomorrow, but it’s most likely going to shut down for a few weeks.

On another note, the new reel is a dream. Baitrunner worked great, drag was super smooth and it’s got some serious winching power. I’ll give it another few outings and probably buy another. Pretty remarkable reel for just under $70.

I’ll have to look into those braids. The spiderwire is certainly strong, but I think it’s too abrasive. I want to find something that’s fused.

Been doing a bit of research on Keuka for carp. We have a cottage there for our 50th. There’s some big carp in that lake. I’ve seen pics of 37 to 50 lb fish. Lucky for me, my Bride is just fine with me fishing while we’re there.

Gotta love that girl. Think I’ll marry her all over again.

Did some recon today. Fished a few spots this morning just casting poppers for bass. Did manage one good largemouth. Main objective was carp observation.

Didn’t see any spawning carp anywhere. So, I’m back at it tomorrow morning. It’ll be nice and cool and none of this ridiculous humidity.

Nice!

Phone was dying so I only got 2 pics. The one I lost I simply could not control at all. Never saw it except for a few swirls on the surface. It finally took me into the rocks and the hook pulled.

The bottom one was the last fish I caught. It was big! Saw it porpoise in front of me and I considered pulling up stakes. But I waited about 15 minutes anyway and it hit…….like a freight train. The new reel is just plain awesome. I highly recommend it for carp and cats.

My first fish this morning was a channel cat. That’s something new for me.

I gotta get a bigger net!
Really nice morning to be out.

Tried an alteration to my pack bait recipe. It’s been just Panko, strawberry jello and creamed corn. I added some cheap bran flakes (ground up) and some Walmart brand coffee creamer. I looked for dried milk but couldn’t find it so I went with the creamer.

I tested the breakdown rate yesterday and it took about 10 minutes to turn from a packed ball into particles. It put out lots of cloud and particles. Worked great this morning. Fish were all over it.

your post have got me thinking of carp fishing.  i came in this morning and was checking out some vids.  came across this one of carp taking baits.  its amazing how many reject the bait.  it must be in heavily fished waters or something.

You might think so, but it generally takes a few pick ups before successfully hooking one most times. I have a water wolf camera, and have watched carp pick up baits countless times before being hooked. I have prioritized rigs that reset themselves and it has paid dividends.

What are “prioritized rigs”?

As in I have made it a priority to only use rigs that reset themselves.

As far as not knowing your bait has been picked up. Most times you would never know. As tight as you can get your lines the carp can still spit your bait before it registers at the rod tip.

For a fish they are "intelligent." So it's a relative thing.

There are things fish are good at we couldn't dream of doing. Heck my dog can smell things 10,000 to 100,000 times better than me due to my 6 million olfactory receptors vs. a dogs 300 million, and my dog's brain specializes in smell to the tune of 40 X better.

Don't even get me started no how much better my dogs can hear than me.

BTW a fish can distinguish water temps as little as 1/10 a degree.
Title: Re: Big Carp Chronicles
Post by: rgfixit on Jun 19, 2021, 03:58 PM
I’m trying to curb  my natural tendency to be factual…but…..intelligence and intellect are human traits and do not apply to other creatures. Simply because only human beings have that inherent self awareness and the ability to react upon feeling and fact.

I always taught my children that only humans have babies. Cats have kittens, deer have fawns, foxes have kits…..etc. There’s  a reason for this. I felt they needed to know their place in this world….and they do.

I’ll agree that carp can be very difficult to catch under certain circumstances. Stalking them in a clear water stream is difficult. Presenting a fly in a way that they see as food can be difficult. But not impossible for a logical, thinking, human being with intelligence and intellect.

Top fish was a slug. 28” maybe 20#.

While I was setting up the carp rig I shot some pack bait into my area. Launched out the method feeder and hair rig and was adjusting the rod in the alarm when I had a huge hit. Nice..
 But what’s a , method feeder?
Title: Re: Big Carp Chronicles
Post by: rgfixit on Sep 21, 2021, 06:12 PM
Basically it’s a slip sinker that holds a pack bait.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BtvzZMMj/832-C4-D34-5-AB1-4-F9-D-AAA4-76-F8-BF2-AF339.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BtvzZMMj)

So…you have your feeder on the line and attach a hair rig with a swivel. You set the hook and baited hair in the the cup, fill it with pack bait and press the feeder into the cup. What you end up with is your hair rig smashed into the pack bait on the feeder.

When you toss it out your baited hair rig is sitting right on top of a pile of chum. There’s a little more to it but that’s the basics.

All I can tell you is it really works like magic.

Tried to carp fish my spot on the canal this morning. Got there and set up only to realize I’d left my pack bait home. Put everything up and went back home to get it. Just got set back up and the packet boat fleet started passing. At least 20 of them over the course of an hour and a half.

Then they opened and closed the locks about 10 times. It drops the water in that section more than 6” every time. The currents just sweep the bait away.

Packed back up and came home. I’ll give it a try tomorrow morning.

There were a bunch around but they were still wallowing in the weeds.

Got a channel cat too.

Well…since I’m re-retired again…..I’m fishing.
Got2 nice ones this morning.

This one was a tank.

This one was springtime fat.

Could have stayed all day and caught more but I ran out of pack bait. Made a new batch of pack bait for tomorrow. I’m going to fish them for the next few warm days then go find some panfish for the freezer.

Here is my pack bait recipe, lol. Probably overkill.
Do you make your own boilies too?  I have made only 1 batch that has caught fish. Not even sure why those worked and the others didn't.  Still fun trying to find the magic mixture!

Holy moly that’s a pile of stuff for pack bait. Mine is plain panko, strawberry jello, corn juice and some ground up sweet corn. If it doesn’t pack and break down the way I like, I add a bit of flour. Simple and it works.

Tried several boilie recipes. Didn’t have any luck with them. I use field corn soaked in vanilla and water and a silicone corn kernel soaked in straight vanilla. My secret weapon is Pro Cure in sweet corn flavor. I coat the corn and hair with it and it stays for a long soak.

Went 1 for 2 this morning. First one got me into the weeds and rolled the hook out. Second was another good sized fish. Maybe 15 lbs.

Those are big carp, nice going rgfixit, great chronicles. :)

I don't often go for carp, but, when I do always enjoy catching them, so strong, even the little ones. :w00t:

We've always had good luck with ground up Wheaties cereal mixed with vanilla extract and water. The carp homed in on them quickly.

I've never tried that mix before, sounds interesting! Does the vanilla extract attract the carp better then other scents?

I don't know as that is all we used. Never tried anything else. All I know is it didn't take long for them to home in on the bait.

I think they are just about everywhere. I've caught my biggest ones in nearly sterile trout lakes.

Started the season catching a lot of small males, but the big girls finally came in. I figured out that they are much more active in the evenings/night and only little guys during the day. Got 3 over 20lbs so far and 1 fat mutant!

Nice fish! Haven’t had time to go after them yet. Still getting the golf course set up. Should ease up soon…..I hope.
