RG and Trapper, thank you guys for the offer of advice - I may very will take you up on it once I buy myself a vise and some startup materials!  Definitely getting into fishing the fly, and I really appreciate your willingness to help.  I do check out websites, online videos, etc. from time to time trying to learn a bit, but I think I need to get my hands on the tools before I can learn anything meaningful.  This winter (once I get tired of tromping through knee-high snow to hand-drill holes), I'm going to get down to business and start to learn the craft.  Seems like a great way to kill the winter months to me, and I love nothing more than spring fishing on the local trout streams!  Man I've got a place reserved on the wall for a 24"+ stream brown and came close this past season, but would love to catch the big boy on a homemade fly next season!

Thanks for the referral on the Danvise...a durable, well-made product?  Would rather make a long-term investment than start with something cheap that I end up replacing...a good way to go?

Cheers and good luck out on the water, boys.

I really like my Danvise. Good solid vise for a very reasonable price. When I decided to upgrade a coupe years back I was all set to drop $500 - 700 for a vise. I researched for months (I've been described as frugal :-\) to find the vise I liked. In the end, I chose it because of the countless reviews I read by professional fly tiers who used them day in and day out and owned several of them and used them over their other way more expensive vises.

It holds a hook rock solid. You never have to change the jaws. I've tied from 4/0 down to #24 hooks in the same jaws. The rotary function is a plus and works great for me with certain types of flies..although, I'll admit to tying conventionally 90% of the time. Still, being able to easily turn a fly over to look at all sides without any changes to the vise is a huge plus.

Anyway...did I say I love my Danvise?

The recipe for that fly please...... :whistling:
2 parts ...parts...1 part love ;D

It's a bunch of simple stuff really. I'll do a step by step  for you and Jr.

I'll dig out those tandems Trap. I haven't tied them in years. They worked well on the finger lakes.

Hey thanks RG, I will add it to my fishing registry.  Feel free to stop in and have it shipped to me at any time ;)

For real, thanks man.  Appreciate the advice on a quality product because that's what i'm looking for.

Good looking stuff there RG! :thumbup_smilie: My tying table has been taken over with household clutter....my fault, once I'm done chasing Mr. Waldo this fall, time to focus on that aspect of angling again.

Here you go KP!
Stuff you need;
#4>10 aberdeen hooks
70 Denier thread. I use hot pink or chartreuse
Mylar piping, You can get a lifetime supply of red black, pearl, silver and gold for about $10 at a craft store.
Red dyed duck feather...also a craft store item
Gold or silver crimp beads. I get these at Joann Fabrics, They're inexpensive and come in gold plate, silver plate and pewter.
Super glue

Cut a chunk of mylar and remove the cotton cord from the center

cut the mylar into about 1" pieces

Slide the mylar on to the hook, pull it back and start your thread stopping about 1/4" back from the eye to leave room for the bead

Crimp a bead on at the eye over the thread

A little needle nose comes in handy.

Tie down the mylar behind the bead

Select a piece of duck feather

Tie the duck feather in behind the bead, whip finish and apply a drop of super glue to the thread

You can pick out the mylar strands if you like. It's gonna end up this way anyhow.

Tip it with a minnow or waxie and catch some perch ;D
