Good first smallmouth trip yesterday. My father caught 12 and I caught 8. Most were 12-16". Water temp was 64-66, lots of surface activity.
-
What Dam were you guys on???
-
E-17, near the West Hurley d**e on the lower East Basin.
-
Went up for my birthday yesterday with my girlfriend Zipphora, she caught her first laker at 18" and I got a 21"er, both trolling 10 colors in 130-140 ft. of water. Water temp 59-62 degrees.

Nice job Gino and Zipp(sorry).stripers all done??
-
Wow that first lake trout looks really well fed!
-
More great pics. Looks like you are having a great time. Keep on tearing up the fishing! thx for sharing.

Water temp 65 at Ashokan. Trolled 3-4 colors today with Dreamweavers, nothing but only was out for an hour and a half. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if the fishing is just slow but I haven't been able to figure out Ashokan with the trolling yet. Does anyone have any tips?
-
Trolled Ashokan from 4:40-8 AM. Water temp 65, fished in 55-65 ft. of water. Tried 6 different spoons, trolled primarily 3-5 colors, but went as deep as 6.5 and as shallow as 1.5-2. Tried rowing fast, medium, slow, lots of pauses, turns, rod pumps, etc. Nothing at all. On the bright side, caught a beautiful sunrise and got plenty of exercise! In time I will figure out the right trolling strategy in here, practice makes perfect.

Went up with a friend and tried our luck trolling worm harnesses for a rare walleye, and managed three white perch. Most fish marked near shore, the middle zone of 55-60 ft was barren, only one fish at twenty ft and a surfacing fish chasing sawbellies. We had a few bottom bouncers, as well as three colors and two colors. Next time going to try jigging.
-
Trolled the Downsville end at Pepacton 12-9 pm. 4 browns, 2 11"ers at 4&6 colors, 19" & 18.5" at 5 colors. A few missed hits as well. Water temp 66.
Hit Rondout yesterday for smallmouth and we got 15 + a 24" chain pickerel. Water temp 68.

You have my respect for trolling 9 hours in a rowboat.
I have never seen the New York reservoirs but i look forward to Jager61 and your reports.

X2. Nice work Gino.

Nice work Gino! Persistence seems to have paid off for you. Any idea how fast you are going when rowing?
-
Gino thank you for keeping us update on NYC reservoir fishing trips. You are having a good open water season to date. Nice that your girlfriend also enjoys fishing.
Steve

Thanks guys! Zwiggles, for browns I try to row 1.5-2 mph, much slower if going to lakers. Row-trolling for browns all day means the next day I most likely will not be trolling due to being sore lol. I have found a lot of fish bite on the pause, especially when using flutter spoons, and it's also important to pump your rods often, turn, change speeds, anything that gives your lure an erratic action.
Good luck!
Gino

Nice. I had a conversation with my uncle regarding my grandfather, and how he used to troll out of a row boat for brook trout and LLS. He basically backed up everything you said (minus the speed- gps wasn’t big back then), and in particular mentioned making it be as erratic as possible. He said they often would get doubles when the towing stopped, or right after they started to row again.
Keep up the good work!

Tons of white perch, smallmouth & rock bass tonight on jig & worm at Ashokan. No walleyes yet, but no surprise there lol.
-
Third walleye outing of the year at Ashokan and managed to actually hook one. Went out with a friend and while trolling back to the shore after dark, in about 20 feet of water right on a point, stickbait bouncing the bottom trolling real slow, the rod went off but the problem was my friend has these trolling wieghts attached that I had never used before so unfortunately I struggled way too much to get the weight off and by the time he got it off the fish was gone. While reeling it in, it surfaced and was a good sized fish. Fought like a log, nothing like a trout or bass, and he is a veteran walleye angler and we're both 95% sure it was a walleye. Other than that, a bunch of white perch, a small rock bass & yellow bullhead, a throwback smallmouth and two nice keeper smallies.
-
Trolled Ashokan this morning 5-8 , 5-6 colors and one flatline, caught 4 smallmouth and a rock bass. Saw a black bear that swam across the whole reservoir!

Way to get out. Had a big black bear swim accross a river I was fishing once. He had no problems at all. Cool you got to see it.
-
This mornings catch at Ashokan! 22" brown, 17"&15" smallmouth. 7 colors on a glow Stinger. 77 water temp, marking fish 30-42 ft in 56-62 ft of water. Only out for an hour or so, 5-6 AM .

Nice looking stringer there, that brown has some size to it!
-
Nice fish!
-
Good work Gino!
-
Trolled Rondout this evening mid-way up the res 7-10 colors with spoons but the fish were not biting for me, only a buoy line which I lost two spoons on lol! Wasn't marking many fish at all, except for a few stragglers 90-110 ft. down as well as a few schools of what I assume were browns 30-70 ft down chasing sawbellies. Hopefully better luck next time. Also for anyone heading up the 55 side, the bridge on 55 below the dam is closed, had to drive around 55A to get to my boat.
-
Did a little shore fishing below the weir last night, no action & nothing for the other guy either. Water is at or near full capacity in lower basin, although upper basin seems to be down a bit (can see islands in the middle).
-
Ashokan : 6 smallmouth, 15" rainbow and 13.5" brown at 7 colors glow Michigan Stingers.
-
I used Stingers jigging on Upper Saranac Lake last month. I yarned on that thing until my arms nearly came out of their sockets, but to no avail. Better luck to you and your girlfriend, Gino!
-
Ashokan.
16" rainbow, 15"smallmouth. 3 missed hits + lost 2 smallmouth at the boat.
7 colors on Stingers.

Nice fish Gino!
-
Trolled Ashokan 6-9:30am with 7-7.5 colors. Relatively slow today, only got a 14" smallmouth on the Stingers, then switched to jointed Yo-Zuris. Haven't fished crankbaits much and couldn't land any, lost 2 nice smallmouth near the boat, another near the boat that felt like a smallie, and a few other hits.
-
Is it possible the trout have gone deeper than the smallmouth, hence only smallmouth?
-
Is it possible the trout have gone deeper than the smallmouth, hence only smallmouth?
That was the best piece of advice I have gotten for trolling for cold water fish. If your catching smallmouth keep going down for the trout.
-
At Ashokan the trout and smallmouth tend to always be caught at similar depths this time of year. Trolled up 3 smallmouth and a small brown + another small brown lost near the boat. A few missed hits. 30-40 ft down.

I have noticed browns in some lakes will be, but not alway, higher in the water column than the other species of trout.
-
Trolled Sunday evening for a few hours with no luck except a lost smallmouth. The water level in the lower basin has gone up about 2-3 feet and I am seeing moored boats in the water at e17. Water level is above full capacity.
-
Getting a lot of rain out there too eh?
-
We had about a week where it rained every day quite heavy in the evening, streams have been high but finally coming down.We definitely didn't get as much rain as other parts of the state though.
Trolled out of Samsonville Cove this morning, 2 downriggers & 2 jet divers. Not a bite.

What do you think's going on? Perhaps they moved to a different part of the reservoir?
In smaller lakes I've had it where I end up zip for suspended fish and end up finding them right on the bottom. Is that a possibility? And I've see the reverse of that. I've fished one trout lake where the browns are suspended and the bows are on the bottom.
-
I think the browns are going into their pre-spawn fasting period and striking primarily out of aggression at this point. That would explain how guys I know are fishing all day with sawbellies and not getting a hit but trollers are still getting some here and there , albeit not anything near the action throughout May-July. As far as rainbows, there definitely aren't the numbers in Ashokan that there used to be. Not enough to specifically target them in my opinion. On the other hand, there are also some reservoir fisherman having a fantastic August but I don't know how they're fishing lol. I'm sure there's some secret techniques out there that would still get them consistently.
-
As someone that raises brown trout among other trout species it seems awfully early for browns to get into a spawning or even pre spawn mode. Maybe different in the reservoir vs. my rearing pond?
If it was me I'd fish the same depth they were suspended, but close to the bottom at that same depth. With fishing so slow what have you got to lose?
Ever troll a cowbell or Christmas tree rig with a bell sinker added to the keel a length of line suspending it that you want it off the bottom? I would go with about 12 inches. And a shiner sewn on a 3 foot leader is a plus. For some reason the real deal gets more strikes than artificials.
OTOH I've see where fish don't want to strike artificial and a minnow sewn behind a size 0 dodger or flasher gets hits. I remember once trolling half a day with nothing on an spoon behind a downrigger. Put on the above and bam!
-
I agree, early for browns to get in spawn mode but,all this rain has everything messed up.water temps must be lower than normal.
-
Gino@Roundout,
Keep up the reports. I really enjoy them. I hope you know how blessed you are to have this NYC reservoirs to fish for big trout and smallmouth bass. I've given up on my state as they just want to take the easy way and and cater to the put and take anglers. No coldwater forage anymore and mostly rainbows that never reach trophy size.
-
Thanks taxid, yes the NYC Reservoirs really are fantastic fisheries. Trolled Rondout on Friday with my dad for a few hours 7-10 colors with one yellow perch, and 4 smallmouth near shore on senkos. Went smallmouth fishing on Ashokan on Saturday and we caught 5. Trolled Rondout with a friend yesterday 70-95 ft down, 4 lakers (one barely legal rest shorts) and one smallmouth.
-
ust got back from a 3 day trip up in the Catskills with my girlfriend for our 1-year anniversary. We camped at Peace Valley Campground on the East Branch Delaware :D. The E. Br. was freeeezing and the browns were not feeding much over the three days we were there but I was able to get a 19"er on Friday and she caught a 13"er Saturday, both on jerkbaits. We fished Pepacton on Saturday , trolled for 2 hours and caught a 14" brown at 7 colors and then went in towards shore for some smallmouth action due to the heat. 4 shorts and 2 keepers. All of the other fisherman I talked to were fishing saws and everyone was catching mostly smallmouth, some couldn't get a bite, and I only heard of one lost brown trolling from a kayak fisherman. Stopped by the Beaverkill on the way home yesterday and caught 2 small browns, and finished the day at Ashokan. 2 smallmouth trolling. After much experimentation, I was able to get a third rod out running a planer board with 2 colors of lead and so far no tangles ;D .

Beautful fish and beautiful scenery no doubt. Happy anniversary! Before you know it, it will be 20 or 30 years like the rest of us.
-
That's awesome, nice way to celebrate!!
And have someone that enjoys to do what you do !
I have the same for 23 years now
-
Thanks guys.
A bit slow on Ashokan last night, but my friend and I still managed to get some fillets for dinner.
1 smallmouth & 2 white perch trolling.
5 white perch and 1 big pumpkinseed jigging.

Happy Fall everyone! My gf had an audition in NYC yesterday so I snook off for some fishing (of course!) and got this 14" largemouth at the Harlem Meer.
Slow day at Rondout, trolled 2, 7,8,& 9 colors and not a hit. Caught these 13.5&16" keepers while casting and my dad got three little throwbacks. Water temp was 65.

What kind of audition Gino if you don't mind me asking? Singing, acting?
-
She is a singer. Auditioned at the Apollo Theater for Amateur Night.

Impressive!
I used to be a singer in a Rock N Roll garage band. But that was mainly because the drummer and I were the only once that could sing. LOL But the drummer Jim Gunn did end up being a drummer and lead back up singer for a county music star -- Conway Twitty.
-
Awesome taxid.
Slow morning on Ashokan. Trolled 2, 5 & 6 colors with a variety of spoons & plugs. One fat 14" yellow perch. The browns must have pre-spawn lockjaw!
Also here's a sweet sunset shot from my Wallkill R. Walleye expedition last night which proved unfruitful (still haven't managed to get one yet this year lol).

A 14 inch perch is nothing to sneeze at!

Went smallmouth fishing on Rondout tonight, 23" 4 pound chain pickerel. One 17" smallie and a short, and my dad got a short. All on Senkos.

I wish we had chain pickerel out here. I like they way they look and they are easy to paint. I'm going to have to catch one next time I am out east.

Nice pick! Did it put up a good fight? We had one about that size come 2’ out of the water on us last year trolling like a salmon. They get a lot of hate, but they tug well...
-
I remember they were great fun on tip ups in the winter when I lived out east.
-
Put up a great fight, took a good bit of drag. Trolled Ashokan with a friend this evening, one smallmouth each. Off to Rondout tmrw.
-
Trolled Rondout down to South Hill Cove and threw the entire kitchen sink at them, spoons and sticks and not a hit. Marked lots of fish but they weren't feeding. Also jigged a bit dropping worm tipped spoons n jigs right in front of their noses but they weren't interested. Off to Pepacton tmrw for closing day.
-
Didn't make it to Pep and went to Ashokan instead with my dad. Trout weren't biting but we got 5 smallmouth and a white perch trolling and 4 smallmouth casting.
-
Slow evening at Ashokan , one hot and lost a fish. Trolled flutter spoons. 67-68 water temp.
-
Trolled Rondout on Saturday with my girlfriend. We each got a 16" smallmouth, a few hits, a 11.5" brown, and I got a 23" chain pickerel casting a Kroc on the upper end. Water temp 62 degrees.

Cool! Have you tried to fish around a inlet somewhere for browns gearing up for the spawning mode?
-
That was what we were targeting but either they weren't hitting or its too early still. In the next few weeks the action should be heating up.
-
No action at all this morning shore fishing below the weir. Luckily I still caught a beautiful sunrise. :D

Nice work Gino. Great pics.
-
Nice pictures. I need to get out there some time.

Caught a big fat skunk trolling out of Flat Rocks this morning. Tried from the surface down to about 4 colors with a variety of spoons & plugs. Water temp 58-59.
Very nippie lol, had to scrape frost off my windshield this morning.

Could the fish be up high now? Maybe use some kind of small inline planner board to get a near surface bait out and away from the boat?
-
I know the Smallies crush topwater this time of the year.
This time last year the Smallies were on fire at Cannonsville.
-
I was fishing a rod with a planer & two lead rods from 1-4 colors down. Surprised not even a smallmouth, they're usually pretty active right now.
-
Hmmm... does sound weird.
-
Trolled with my dad today up to the Pepacton tunnel release. Three pan sized browns with Stingers / 2 colors. Threw some Kastmasters up near the inflow and got this 19.5" 2.79# brown and a 15" smallmouth. My dad caught a short brown as well.

I'd say low 50s.

Water has to be in the 40's in my ponds. Unfortunately my expensive dissolved oxygen and temp meter is on the fritz.

Trolled yesterday at Ashokan out of e17, one 16.5" brown at 4 colors, water temp 46. Trolled today for 4 hours with DaveW out of e2, he got a 15" brown at 4 colors + 2 short hits, water temp 42.
