We definitely are. I was talking about bullhead fishing with my dad a couple days ago. We are thinking about going in the next week or so. Might be early but with this warm weather I think they’ll move up soon

The hatchery workers have not put the nets in yet. I believe they will as soon as the season is closed. Quite a few people fishing scriba creek the last few days.

Got the itch ?     I've broken out in hives !     I can hardly wait but I know it's just a bit early yet.  Last year I got into them 4 days after ice out, which was about April 6.  This year that happened a week ago but I know the water is much cooler than last year. Hannaford's just had a sale on shrimp so I got bait. I'd like to see about 4 days worth of sunshine & I believe they will be game on. A slow warm rain won't hurt.

Also, the pond at the end of 6 mile creek.
There is a campground there (Willow Beach RV Park).
We used to drive in and just fish and nobody bothered us, but that was 10+ years ago.

I heard a few peepers last night which was odd given the temps and being a bit breezy   I'm ready to go, just need to register the boat trailer and start the engine.  Waiting on the weather

I guess it is still mid-March, but this weather isn't doing anything for my plans of a fresh bullhead dinner. With all the warm temps earlier, I had ideas of spending a couple evenings in the boat soaking some baits. Might as well pull a package from the freezer. That's what they're there for.

I doubt very much that I’ll be able to skip it. Maybe I’ll just have a neighborhood fish fry to empty the freezer.

Love the hiss of a Coleman gas lantern.

Trapp I didn't look back but in my photo library I have a pick from April 10 & 12. Both good catches and really nice nights if I remember correctly and that was only a few days after ice out.

At least here in MA they are very active under the ice, so I am surprised you have any "wait" before they start biting...

oh you can pick a few  but  we are waiting for the spring run when they come in the creeks and shallows to spawn and you can catch buckets full....plus we like warmer nights  for eatting snacks drinking beer and telling bs stories.............like i said bullhead fishing is tradition
Title: Re: bullheads
Post by: Doubles Shooter on Mar 23, 2024, 05:18 AM
I've got to get out for bullheads again. Been too long. My grandkids need to experience the fun of sitting on the river bank at night cooking hot dogs on the fire. As RG said, there is something about the hiss of a Coleman lantern that rounds out the night.
4 or 5 of us would get together a couple times a season for an all nighter fishing an oxbow lake off the Genesee river. We would bring back up to 100 fish. They got put in burlap bags and tossed into a creek behind my buddy's place while we went home to sleep a bit. The next day, we would gather for the cleaning. assembly line style. There was a log there where 1 guy would nail the fish to. The next guy would cut the skin and pull it off with pliers. #3 guy cut the heads off and finished cleaning them. #4 would start the process all over. Working as a team, we could do a pile of fish in no time. We would spilt up the meat to take home but keep a bunch out then fire up the cook pot. We used a beer batter seasoned liberally with finely minced wild onions and hush puppies with onions too. A few frosty cold beers completed the feast.

You can smoke them whole but be careful. Watch temperature. If you overcook they get mushy.

I've tried it many times with nothing to show for it except a few dinky sunnies or perch. When I was a boy we caught them from grandma's beaver swamp but they were nasty. Tasted like the mud smells.

  Getting poles ready now
   I can remember.
   fishing them at night
  Coleman lantern hissing
   peepers talking nothing. better.
   Times have changed though.
I now go. during day, warmer
bait was nightcrawlers. or leeches, crabs
used to use big tadpoles., smelt.
      But new bait regulations.
    put a stop to that,

“We the People” includes all the citizens of the United States of America. The importance of this phrase shows that it wasn't just the framers of the Constitution or the legislators who were given powers to the government. Instead, the government gets all of its powers from the Citizens of the United States of America.

Don't remind me about the crabs ....one day my buddy and I had crawlers and leeches and caught maybe 3 bully's - 2 docks over 2 guys were fishing crabs under a bobber (never saw that before) and caught so many they had to make a run to get more bait ....we went over there right when they left and nothing - they came back and started killing them again ....LOL

Thats looks pretty good - I do something similar - just slice the skin all the way around the fish by the head and pull it off with a pair of pliers - then just snap the head off and the rest comes with it ....are bully's bigger than the one in the demo harder to cut that middle fin off ??

I do them like Uoflcards   Takes about 2 min / fish   The bigger ones I'll fillet after pulling the hide off so that's about 3 min.  Under 10" they go whole in the pan.  My brother and I brought home 66 one nite. That was a bunch of cleaning.

Yikes - no kidding ....my hands are hurting from from the slices and pokes from the horns and their slime just thinking about it .....I'm usually pretty careful but still get stuck or sliced once or twice - with that many I would be rushing too much and REALLY gotten it........

Naah   your being too careless   If they're bouncing around, a whack on the head with the back of your knife calms them down. Haven't seen a decent sized one yet that I can't tame.  It's the little buggers 6-8" that will stick you quick. I don't even like taking the little ones off a hook.

Yep - I'm almost ALWAYS too careless when it comes to them.....I usually use a good sized handle from a screw driver for the wacking but I still get stuck - hahaha

Plan on wetting a few lines this evening to see if I can put a few of these tasty whiskered boogers in my bucket.

Might try some shrimp on one rod tonight. If nothing else, I’ll pair shrimp cocktail with a few Busch Lights

Rain just cleared out here now the wind is blowing like crazy. Not a good fishing nite in my opinion.  It could die after dark, but I have an hour drive to fish. I'll wait for a better day.

I weathered the storm. The late wind gusts actually turned the bite on after a slow start. First fish was a delightful surprise, a nice striped fella.

Good luck Brad let us know how the tournament goes

Way to go TrapChecker  You did well for such difficult conditions. I can deal with (and have) a little rain but the wind always aggravates me. It's hard to keep the boat still and even harder to keep lines still.   How did you make out with the shrimp?
I'm hoping for Monday or Tuesday eve.

Post by: ActiveTrapChecker on Apr 13, 2024, 10:33 AM
Tight lines to everyone entering the tournament.

I skipped the shrimp, I was going back and forth deciding whether I wanted to even go because of that 9pm gust they were forecasting. The wind wasn’t an issue for me as I was casting from shore.

Was fun hearing the ol’ Coleman lantern humming!

Had another good nite last nite. Absolytely beautiful to be on the lake.  29 Keepers  Shrimp did most of the damage. Crawlers worked and clams were a flop. I don't think I'll mess with the clams again. Had 2 big fish with 6" perch in them.

Got out last nite for a little while. Bite was good on crawlers rite off then the little perch found the banquet and I couldn't keep a bait on the bottom. I switched to all shrimp and did much better. Ended up with 20 good ones and few throw backs.

my problem is there are too many fun fishes to go after. Seems my favorite waters to fish are all different for each species so it is tough to go after 2 or more in one day.
What an awful problem to have !!     I guess there is a morning and an evening to each day...  Hmmm

Got out last nite and did-em again  This just seems to be a lucky season so far. Every trip has been dandy with the weather, the conditions, and let's not forget the fish. Got 30 of these guys last nite. Fished only shrimp. Getting a bunch in the freezer so maybe time to focus on some gills.
