Just got done reading about the Asian long horned tick , another really unpleasant creature
-
Freddie be careful near some of our trout holes I had two ticks on me when I came out .....I just sprayed all my fishing cloths with permethrin and put a fresh pump bottle of off in my fishing vest and bag....I got a tick removeal card from wal mart too like 3 bucks
-
I’ll pick up some up , bud , I need a trip to runnings for a few spoons

Yeah the tics are out of hand, I pulled one off my leg last week. Our dog has Lyme disease. She had the liquid medicine you put on her back, well she swims everyday in our pond when it's hot out. The Vet says, "you can't let her swim, it'll wash the meds off". She got the antibiotics, and now takes the oral med for tics. You can't keep that dog out of the water. Just a heads up for dog owners.
Last winter a friend of mine went out grouse hunting after a snow storm. He hiked a big loop way up the hill, got home and did the check. Yup 3 tics, walking in deep snow. Relentless bugs.... >:(

They are a tough customer
The ASIAN LONG HORNED TICK is heading our way ,

NO CURE for lyme just control to a degree if you get it in time.

INDEED! I lost a purebred black lab to kidney failure from Lyme 9 years ago, nasty stuff. She was only 4 and She loved to swim too and we always were treating her with topical and switched to an oral med and she still got it. Right up to the very end, she went blind when her kidneys were failing but still could smell the pond and went right for it and the next day we had to put her down, really glad she was able to get one last dip in since she enjoyed it so much...it meant a lot to me seeing her have that one last good time.
Now have an 11 year old yellow lab/Weimaraner mix and you cannot keep him out of the water...so far the oral meds are working and being overly diligent with keeping the yard and area around the duck pond in check by knocking down tall grass/weeds/shrubs has kept the ticks at bay, at least close to the living quarters...up on the mountain I hunt is another story...last 3 archery seasons here in VT I've had anywhere from 8-26 ticks on my cloths at one time or another while going to/from the hunting grounds/stand with some managing to get under my top layer of clothes, luckily none dug in. Kinda freaky when you sit down for a spell and take off your jacket to find dozens of them little buggers crawling all over the inside of the jacket!

Can anyone pinpoint what type of brush or trees ticks prefer? Or are they just everywhere?

Trees , brush , tall grass , iow grass , leaf litter , there everywhere.. . :P

If diagnosed in the early stages, Lyme disease can be cured with antibiotics. Without treatment, complications involving the joints, heart, and nervous system can occur. But these symptoms are still treatable and curable.Jan 31, 2018
you can google this your self also
Early treatment is a simple 14 to 21 day course of oral antibiotics to eliminate all traces of infection. Medications used to treat Lyme disease include: doxycycline for adults and children older than 8 years old. cefuroxime and amoxicillin for adults, younger children, and women who are nursing or breastfeeding
if you find a tick on you withing 72 hours 2 doxycycline tablets taken stops the disease from taking hold
you can google all of this and talk to your doctore everyone should have a good knowledge of this you can't be a outdoorsman and not have a experience with ticks sooner or later ...be informed and perpared

x2. Everywhere there’s brush. They don’t fly, but they jump on you when you rub against any high grass, shrub or branch

As a kid I don't think I ever saw a tick, now they are common. I especially worry about them during turkey season, the very tiny ones are out in force then. It has been said before, use permethrin on your clothes, it works and is cheap. In addition during turkey season I wear tight, light weight polypropylene thermal underwear and a tight fitting baclava to protect my neck and head. When I get home the outer clothes are taken off in the garage and I hit the shower. No ticks. Then in June I was playing fetch the stick with the dog on the lawn and got bit. They like grass. Now I spray my street shoes with permethrin too. Permethrin, when liquid, can be fatal for cats. Supposedly it's ok for them once it has dried. jperch

I found this interesting

I understand guinea hens and chickens left running around your yard help with tick control as well

Bobwhites are a great idea; however, they are regulated in the Great State of New York and a license is required to raise them legally. Whether a class A or B license depending on your intentions, this includes a fee, record keeping, and annual reports to DEC. Nothing is as simple as it seems. >:(

When we raised Bob White Quail on the ground in bottomless cages we moved around, any insect that got in there was instantly history. I once dropped a spider in and it was like a massive stampede of Bob White to be the first to get it. :D

from what I seen townships on long island are doing it and it serves a duel purpose because high school children help raise them

Usually the first week in spring when i find it is dry out they emerge by the millions. Everybody asks me if im ever scared of anything cause i walk the woods at night. I always said coons and ticks are the only thing that comes at me at night. The old men used to tell me of lime disease. The way it scared them and they talked about it ive always been paranoid about lyme disease. Its a nasty thing. Check for ticks. Wear permitium and get a thermacell. They havent as bad lately. I pulled 6 out of me one day end of may and 15+ off my clothes. Worst day ever. I usually only get that much a year. Everybody stay safe out there.

You should see the paper chase my son and daughter in law go thru with VT yearly on beekeeping, and they make you pay to do it!
-
I know! I just gave up my Game Bird Breeders License because it's ridiculous! >:(
-
I guess the argument on the other side of the coin is the domestic birds are not adapted to live in the wild, and can introduce genes that will reduce the survivability of the wild ones. And also introduce disease?
I know out here when they reintroduced the wild turkeys (which have become quite common) they were adamant that folks not release domestic ones.
Any merit to that argument?
-
Round here Cecil, its just tax money. Your argument has merit in lots of situations though. They have had this problem with farmed salmon in the pacific.
-
I gave up small game hunting and field trials because of ticks.i miss having a beagle but just isnt worth it to me.
-
I remember growing up in Massachusetts and bird hunting a lot with and without dogs. Never even heard of a tick back them. It was the late 1960's and early 70's. Now they are everywhere when I come out to visit. Just walking a few feet in high grass and you have a half a dozen on you.
-
well like all wildlife one reason ticks have spread is the highways and people traveling we have ebola in our country and new strains of flu .... ticks get on a surfcaster walking threw brush gets in his truck and comes to the great lakes to catch salmon how many times at night have you seen wildlife following a road? or the mtn lion that made it fron S dokota to Greenwich CT to be killed on 95

I think the high ways we travel wild life is taking advantage of it as well
I was in boy scouts about a million years ago and I got a tick on me at 12 pines ...(small lake camping area in central ny) but nothing like today
then again I remember my dad pouring gas on fire ants and I haven't seen them here now in 50 years at least
-
My dad did the same thing with ground bees.waited till it got dark, pour gas down the hole, fire it up,and guess what,no more bees!!
-
fire in the hole!!

Same with the Atlantic’s. Who would have ever thought that an Atlantic salmon would be able to jump out of its pen...

What?! :o We have Ebola in this country?! :o
Peronsally think the lack of DDT is a big reason for ticks. Back when I lived in the northeast we used it like crazy. I can remember C-13O's dropping it from the air while I was fishing! Fish went nuts sucking in all the dead bugs!
-
good point on DDT ...it's been what nearly 50 years since it's use here in America?...

Sounds about right. Not advocating we bring it back but do think it's at least a partial explanation for the lack of ticks back then.
Surprisingly there are scientists that believe it was nowhere near as dangerous as reported.

-
well i do know it had cost us bald eagles and falcons .... but it also explains the increase in cormorant populations ..... i just read that people our age still have DDT in our systems and we will till the end
-
Yes if it did cost us Bald Eagles etc. I can do without it. Corrmorants will be shot on sight at my fish farm although I have not seen one yet. I do have Ospreys that go for my fish if I don't put up lines across the ponds.
A river near me they found about 50 rusted out barrels of DDT quite a few years back IIRR! :o. The city there gets it's drinking water from that river, and it ends up in Lake Erie. Hopefully they were at least mostly empty when dumped! :o
As far as DDT being retained in our bodies then I must have a bunch. Would be fishing when they would come over and spray from the air!
