Nice photo. You can't beat a brook trout in its fall spawning colors.

A few more weeks and I'll be getting into those hopefully

yes, the males are just starting to get the hump backs.  Can't see it in the pic, but that one had quite the ferocious teeth on it as well.

That's a really nice photo. Very dark, and vibrant colors. Thanks for sharing.

Are you sure it's not a female? The head looks like a female although there is some nice color on the flanks.

I have no idea, I didn't mean to imply it's a male when I said "this guy" in first post, my bad.

It can be hard to tell the gender when they're under 12" or so.  Then it becomes more obvious when they get bigger/later into the season.

Caught yesterday, another very pretty native.  Notice the black on the belly, A sure sign fall is near.

The colors show that fall is near but the temps sure don't! Nice fish!

yeah, Air temps in the mid 80's.  Feels like full blown summer right now as I'm typing this.

Water temps on the other hand in the small brooks I fish have remained cool, low 60s/high 50s.

Good one, Randall 8)  Action has been up and down up this way.  A few real good days ;D, but more spent scraping up a handful of fish.  I'll probably get around to posting when the regular season ends.

The extended season may get off to a rough start, although the forecast looks better late week.  Hope some rain follows.

Good to hear, I'm thankful for those really cool nights in August/early September we had, or things would be pretty nasty right now in terms of water temperatures combined with lack of rain.  I've been averaging about 5 trout per outing.  Did get a double digit day for numbers once this month, that was a treat.  Going to get 1 (maybe 2) more small stream trips in before the small water season comes to a close this weekend.

2017 (barring a last minute miracle) was the first year I didn't catch any true holdover brown trout on the small water unfortunately, though as you know, I saw a nice one several times.   8)

Agreed.  Without those cool weeks in there, we would have been in much worse shape.

I had 2 big days in August/Sept where I managed to get on a roll.  Top day was 25 fish.  Another day was 14, but beyond that I really had to pan hard for a few pieces of gold ;D

Maybe you will have some last minute heroics on that big brown that has haunted you ;)

Caught this guy the other day... I thought there would be no way I'd top the colors of the trout in my original post, but I think I just did.  :w00t:
