Title: BassJunky's Frog Collection
Post by: bassjunky on Aug 26, 2011, 02:43 PM
As you can see from many of posts, Im a frog freak, I love to fish frogs and will try pretty much anything. I wanted to start a thread showing off my arsenal and provide links to reviews I do on each one as I test them. If you have ever wondered about a specific frog but never had the chance to try it.. see below I have tried dozens, there are pics and reviews below, and many more to come as I give each one a try.

If you have a frog you love that you dont see below, let me know, im always interested in learning more and trying every frog i can get my hands on

SCUM FROGS:

This is the traditional Scumfrog in a selection of the colours I like to throw

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2F7.jpg&hash=081200a63a7aa3f8ac3d1a21fcada801)

Also available in the walking and popper version.. I dont use these as much as the traditional scum frog

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2F6.jpg&hash=e0fd972ea15ca1f9e24041e44ee30b68)

the las t size available for the scum frog is the mini.. you can also buy these as tandem frogs linked by a 12 inch leader.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2F5-1.jpg&hash=74057c408fc3b9d45ae77b4675a8e754)

Wow, great frog collection Bassjunky, you have quite the extensive line up. 8)

I have a few frogs I don't see on your list.

Hard frogs - #1 The "Rebel Wee Frog".  This is a crankbait style frog with a rattle and diving lip.

                 - #2 The "Rebel Buzz’n Frog".This is a topwater / buzzbait style frog.

Soft Frogs - #1 The good old "Mister Twister Hawg Frawg" in regular and floating.
They are a long time producer for me and one of my first frogs ever.
I fish them on a jig head, but the floating ones can be fished on the top.

                 - #2 Wave Worms "Tiki-Toad." - It can be fish as a top water, on a jig head or a weighted swimbait hook.

I have caught pike on all of these frogs and walleye on all of them except the Rebel Buzz'n Frog.

I have a few more frogs, but they are all ready on your list. ;)

I just got a black Spro frog and so far LOVE it!!  I bought a couple others too.  My problem iis that once a lure is out of the package I have a hard time remembering which one it is.  Why every lure isn't marked with a brand name and model, at least I don't understand. Seems to me it would build repeat sales.

I think you will like the tiki-toad. It seems to send out a fair amount of vibration on the retrieve.
I have the tiki-toad brused orange.
What color or colors do you have?

Playing a little catch-up with some frogs I got to try last week. This is the Strike King Rage toad. It was not a bad little frog, it really tears up the water. I prefer to use something with a softer churn, and moves around structure a bit better. These heavy legs really catch on the pads.

Ok, well i sorta fell behind on this one, so lets play catch-up..

the Stanley Ribbit was recomended here so i picked up a few, grabbed the bully as well as the floater. I liked them, the bully more then the floater, but the floater has some cool color designs

Hi bassjunky,

Just wondered if you have or have seen this frog before or do you have one? :-\ --->http://www.floridakayakfishing.com/index.html (http://www.floridakayakfishing.com/index.html)

I though it was kind of neat looking, kind of like the River2Sea frogs, but with a bit stiffer legs and not as deep a diver.

Hey WW

Check page 1 of this thread, there is one of those frogs pictured, just not the $30 hand painted version. I was not a huge fan but I have a buddy that loves it

Oh right, now I see it. I was looking for the hand painted models, good frog reviews by the way. Lots of info in them. :)

Since you like frog lures so much, I also saw a new frog you may like in my Outdoor edge magazine.  It's called "Rebel Frog - R" and it looks to be new on the market. It appears  to be a surface lure that you would work similar to Koppers live target walking frog.

P.S - I also purshased the River2Sea diver frog, but when it came the legs on it looked all ripped looking at the joints right in the package. :P
I tried gluing the worst parts back together, but not sure if they will last in the water or when I get my first fish with it.
If they don't last, how do you open the diver frog to exchange them for new legs.  I see it comes with a hook, but not sure how to use it. ???

Yep, I picked up one of the rebel FrogR's I like rebel baits. I do switch out the hooks though.

Here is an interesting pair I piced up recently. If you like the z-man product, check these out. I picked up a couple frogs and one of the mice. Interesting mix of soft  body and hollow body

Im still working on frog reviews from last season. Some guys were looking for more info so I started a second blog that is 100% dedicated to frog reviews. I post one a week, here it is for those interested. It is still a new thing and I would love advice and/or input

BassJunky, have you had a chance to try the Trigger - X frog yet?
If so, how do you like it? :-\

I don't have it myself but, do have a few other Trigger-X baits and they seem to work not that bad. :)

Nope, I have yet to try the Trigger X, but I have added it to my wishlist of frogs that I need to try. I have been hit or miss with the majority of the Trigger X product line, but I find most of their product is worth a look.

Here is the newest frog to my arsenal. I dont usually like Spro products, but I really like what I see from the Baby Popper, the perfect size for a popping frog, and sits nice and flat.. typical Spro quality as well

Here are some pics from the most recent review I completed. This is the BPS shop Kermy frog, very similar to spro body design, but without the quality parts. Not a huge fan of this frog but the price is right for many guys (nearly half what you pay from Spro and Live Target.

the legs are crazy long so if you are a trimmer, this has some perks to it

I know I posted a couple pics of the Stanley Ribbit last season, but I finally got my review up, so I thought I would post a couple more. This is a great quality frog, holds up well and kicks the crap out of the water. it took the overall #1 spot on my Frog review page, and knocked the RI Trixie Shark out of the top 5

Pictured is the Bull and Standard sizes (the standard is a "core color")

Hey guys it has been a buys season so far, and I have been kinda slacking here. Ther reviews are still going up once a week, but I have missed updating this page for the last 3 frogs.

here are the last 3 reviewed Frogs

1) Yum Money Frog.. Not a fan, has to many performance issues and i could not get comfortable fishing with it.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FDSC_0047.jpg&hash=d407a1b91e4ef71148667d91722afa90)

2) Yum Bizz Frog - yes I know this is a discontinued frog but it is a much better frog then YUM's current offering, so i wanted to show it off, moves great in the water and looks like it was designed for a SciFi movie

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FDSC_0022.jpg&hash=c80de3f4e34e041d1c2f4b40c2613876)

3) Booyah Pad Crasher, another great hollow body frog, this one is half the price of most of the top guns. At $5.99 it is worth the price of addmission, it walks and hops and had a great ultra soft body
(the pic shows the pad crasher with a lake fork frog tail trailer hook)

I picked up one of the Bully wa's and will try to get it on the water in a few weeks, I have more frogs then I actually have time to fish with, but im trying to keep up..

Here is the MTL Rat N Rat, this is a great product, more weight then most, but moves very well and the blades hang up less then I would have expected

well it's monday, so time for another frog review. This week it is the Kicker fish X Plodin toad, I really had a blast fishing with this frog, and only wish they held up a bit better.

If you like to throw buzz frogs you really should give this one a shot. I like the black body with the neon feet, great silhouette and great target for the fish.

For this who have been asking, Next Monday the review of the Iobee frog will be posted (yes, finally!)

Here is what you have coming in August.. Spro Baby Popper, Trigger X aggression Frog, Creme Buzz Frog, and a frog by a Canadian company that took the Best in Show (soft plastic) at ICAST last week.. LunkerHunt

here is the Kicker Fish X Plodin Toad

Yes, there are a few annoyances (the legs tangle up like crazy) but all in all you need to give this frog a shot

Ok guys, I got a bit lazy at the end of last season and stopped posting, so here is what you missed!

Rebel Frog ' R

this little guy is fun to fish, it is a standard wake bait jsut skimming the the surface, fun to fish and reminds me of fishing with my dad

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FDSC_0044_zpsdc8617fc.jpg&hash=dd85b5402fe350a4eb6ee32d757b2261)

River2Sea Bullywa

This frog surprised me, it fishes way better then expiated, and has made me a believer in River2Sea baits. Worth a try and a decent price point

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FIMG_1649-1_zpsb6eb05e5.jpg&hash=55ab28462dd551e6017fe8feb5b089f5)

Live Target Field Mouse

Not on par with their frog line, I found this mouse to foul up easily and was not a huge fan of the size options. This year I see they have a larger version coming out and I will give it a test drive as well

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FIMG_1698_zps4bc5c17e.jpg&hash=f2fedfce21969b3d7c596dc4bd5919e4)

Deps Slither K

Probably my favorite frog from 2012, and the most expensive. Man can you really move this baby, and the hook-up ratio is unreal. I went 8 for 8 the first time I used this frog, unheard of

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FIMG_1878_zps2427c293.jpg&hash=4b674b9504b13abba41b7e119c582405)

Trigger X Aggression Toad

I like Trigger X baits in general, but the deisgn of this frog leaves much to be desired, too skinny and it rolls on the retrieve.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FIMG_1403.jpg&hash=f603003610d8e98f73540a3944721ee7)

Ish Phat Frog

Another bait that really surprised me, I was not a fan of Snag Proof frogs until I gave this one a run. I love the large flat profile and it moves really well in the water. I picked up the popping version for this year

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FIsh_zpse251e5fa.jpg&hash=c164a40366ddc2452362c52589001a59)

Berkley BatWing

not really a fan of this flat dead frog, my tournament partner slays fish with it, but I just cant get into it. This is no longer available except in a gulp version

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FDSC_0159_zpsf10a63ea.jpg&hash=22b22ce84280f6f37fc4a2a55fa2b634)

Creme Frog

Not stoked on this bait, it is durable I will give it that, but it holds the hook a little to firm in my mind and it takes a bit of work to get it buzzing

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FDSC_0067_zpsc9261ef1.jpg&hash=3d05576f721d863e440d536c6ba1e4e9)

Outdoor Advantage

these guys have an insaine about of color and scent options, you pic the bait, the color and the scent and they make it up.. Not bad, and the it fishes pretty well to boot

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FDSC_0054_zps9de57f3a.jpg&hash=99f792e4a5e08417c3c22a32a6a4ec2a)

So now you are caught up.. more frogs coming this season as the quest for the perfect frog continues

Finally.. Here is my first frog review on the 2013 season (my season is still a ways off so the first few reviews are from frogs I broke in last season)

Mann's hard Nose Toad

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi2.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy28%2Ficejunky%2FGoodies%2FIMG_3608_zps95e08cf9.jpg&hash=a190e7e7c5d738e2c8aa6a749bafdffd)

This is a tournament fav of mine, it moves well and sinks well. The hard nose holds up for multiple fish (but the feet dont always). It gives off a soft churn but that in turns makes it easy to fish over and around cover.

As always you can check out the full review on my "Frog Pond" review site: http://bassjunkiesfrogpond.blogspot.ca/2013/04/manns-hard-nose-swim-toad-review.html (http://bassjunkiesfrogpond.blogspot.ca/2013/04/manns-hard-nose-swim-toad-review.html)

Love the reviews.  As a horny toad user, I've been looking for a frog that has the same combination of attributes

a) Loud Buzz

b) heavy - casts a very long way

c) allows for good hookups.

Have you found anything close?

The only close one I have used is the stanley ribbit frog, but that doesn't cast nearly as far as a horny toad.   the new buzzing warmouth looks like it could have the right combination of attributes.  does the Xplodin toad have some castable weight to it?
Title: Re: BassJunky's Frog Collection
Post by: bassjunky on Apr 03, 2013, 03:31 PM
I have yet to try the warmouth but I bought one for this season.. the Xplodin toad does not have the weight of the Horny toad but it does cast very well. Have you tried the Strike King Rage Toad.. it has to be one of the heavier frogs on the marker and it kicks up some serious water

New week, new frog review.

I tested out the standard Furbit and Poppin Furbit (by Optimum) last year and this is the first time I can say that I actually preferred the poppin' model.

It has all the same perks as the classic Furbit (hefty weight, soft durable body and removable blade), but the one change they made was to remove one leg and give it more of tail. I like the slither motion that fur tails give frog baits, and I think the tail vs. legs gives the fish something easier to hone in on

This is one of the New guys to the market

Where: Walmart
Price: 7.96
Brand: Lunkerhunt

The quality is fantastic and it has a nice paint job, although the fish won't notice it.
The body and legs are sturdy and feels a lot like a live target frog (but much cheaper $$$)

The legs are more than a gimmicky tassel. The frog’s legs extend on the retrieve and contract during pauses to replicate real frog movements. On the pause the frog will sit at a 45 degree angle with just its head poking out of the water once again to replicate the resting position of a frog.

It created a good amount of noise on the surface and its weedless design lets it slip through the cover easily

I received many comments about how this frog is just like the Dahlberg frog, which is a common misconception. Besides having similar legs they are different. Dahlberg is a diving lure whereas the Lunkerhunt frog is a topwater. This lure takes the best of live target's frog and dahlbergs' frogs and combines them into one awesome hybrid.

I just posted a new frog review, this one is a semi-retired frog from Uncle Josh/Sizmic. It has some pro's and con's to it, I think a few more con's then pro's hence the fact that is it no longer available from most retailers. It is very tuff, and casts like a shot, but I found it awkward to get moving well in the water.

Hi bassjunky,
I saw a frog online you might be interested in.  It's called "Foxy Frog" and it a color changing frog from a bran new tackle company out of Ont. CAN.
The company is called "Smartbaits".  Check out the frog and other baits at ---> http://www.smartbaits.net/#.

There are some neat looking color changing and glow baits. 8)

No frog review this week, in it's place is a frog hook review.. the Lake Fork Frog Tail hook

I got to break this hook in last season, and I can honestly say that it is a quality hook that will work on a long list but not all hollow body frogs. I personally tried it on 12 frogs and it fit onto 8 of them.

This hook will obviously make any hollow body frog it is applied to less "weedless" but it will help on days when the fish are short striking. I only wish it came with options like a weed guard or various sizes.

anyways check em out

No problem bassjunky. I though you might find that one interesting and being in Ont. It should be a bit easier for you to pick one up.

Do you have a review for the Big Bite Baits Floating Toad?

Here is another winner for ya, the Ultimate Bucket-mouth Ugly frog, and Ugly is right. I did a mini review/test drive on this frog back in 2011, but the full review was posted this morning. Nohting like a rubber pancake claiming to be the most realistic frog available

Well it is Monday.. so here is a new "frog" review, though this one may not be considered a frog by all..

Im a fan of the Lunker City Salad spoon, it is a very traditional soft plastic bait, no bells and whistles, just flat out catches fish. I have seen a few current baits companies making very similar baits, so it must be doing something right
