Title: Slipbob's 2004 Walleye Chronicles!
Post by: slipbob on May 11, 2004, 08:32 AM
Okay I'm going to try to keep an organized walleye thread going here with some photo documentation of my 2004 season efforts.  Last night was the 5th outing of the year and again the walleyes are hitting like mad.  I caught 8 total in 2 hours.  4 shorts and 4 keepers.  This weather we have now is perfect for fishing.  Warm southerly wind flow with some clouds and sunny breaks.  It doesn't get much better for the bite. Here's some photos from last night.

A little shorty.

Thanks and tell me about it TFB.  Last fall out of about 200 walleye only one was over 5lbs.  The issue here is the lakes that have large walleye populations don't grow a big percentage of large fish.  The average eye around here is 18" or so.  Some fisheries will produce less fish overall but the ones caught are larger on average.  An example would be Lake Ontario where the walleye numbers are much smaller per acre but you have bigger fish that taste absolutely nasty.  It's the place to go if you want one over 10lbs but not to catch fish to eat. That's fine though a few nice 18" walleyes are a great catch in my book.  They are  my favorite to eat next to yellow perch.

Too bad they don't let you keep the smalleyes as you call them, they are the best eating ones, the ones around 14" anyway. The lake where I walleye fish you catch mostly smalleyes but  I've gotten some over 5lbs and one day icefishing my brother got a 10 pounder and a 7 pounder. You just have to put time on the water and eventually the biggens will come

Well at least I've got all the branches & twigs cleaned out. I got wood anyhow. My wife won't eat wood though. Slipbob keeps adding to the chronicles.I had a great time being out there with the master. He thinks like a walleye.

Slipbob,

Guard your spot like the best piece of @## (uummm chicken) you have ever had. I am not mad at ya, but then agian I live 1000 miles west of you and neither one of my poles are long enough to reach your guarded fish spot. Come to think of it they aren't long enough to....never mind. Nice fish.  ;D

I met up with Granpa Jack again this past Saturday for a evening walleye trip.  I ended up with 4 keepers and Jack lost one keeper.  We caught about 20 small walleyes and a couple of smallmouth bass.  Here's some pics of the bigger ones.  It was all my fault Grandpa Jack lost his keeper walleye because I commited a cardinal fishing sin,  I forgot the net.  :'(

Here if someone does that to someone else, they owe em' a walleye ;)

upstream from northville up around the bend when 30/8 runs back next to it there are a few streams that run into the res. and with the water HIGH all the banks are under water, trees, grass, etc. always see fish breaking out there when we drive be to and back from camp. Like you said the res. is a massive body of water. we can seat there talking about places to try but it only really counts when you get out there. Good luck and glad to hear of success on the 'dead sea'.  :D

Nice ones Slipbob!!!  I managed 6 keepers over the course of the weekend.  All 16- 17", nice eaters ;) .  Did see a few nicer fish caught includeing a 24 and 26"er but not on the end of my line.  I lost a really nice fish that was probably pushing 28" about 10' from the boat. :-\  No worries though, I know right where he's at for next time. ;D  Keep the pictures coming!

They are delicious!  I still have some fillets waiting for me when I get back to Maryland.  They're in my Mom's freezer.  I gotta find a way to get them and all my deer meat down to Mississippi, perhaps dry ice.

I miss fishing for walleye dearly and will do it when I visit.  Good Job Slipbob!

nice fish,  i see your still hammering the walleyes, must be nice to have a nearby lake with a large population of starving(good eatin size ) walleyes.
i'd rather catch e'm that size myself ,the big ones 6-11 lbs realy don't put up much of a fight anyhow and don't taste all that good either

WA eating a walleye over 4 lbs is a waste. These fish should be thrown back. I do however welcome the fight of a big walleye.

Slipbob last winter ice fishing I found the same thing with almost all the walleye that i cleaned all but a few had anything in there stomach and 98% of them were males????? What is up with that?
Title: Re: Slipbob's 2004 Walleye Chronicles!
Post by: jf5 on Jun 16, 2004, 02:39 PM
I have cleaned walleyes from MA and VT and thye never have anything in them for food.  My ony guess is that I got them just as the feed started. But you would figure that one of them would have something in its stomach.

On a side note, Slibob, I notice that you are catching some on spoons.  Are you slow jiggin these things off of the bottom like I think you would?
Title: Re: Slipbob's 2004 Walleye Chronicles!
Post by: jf5 on Jun 16, 2004, 03:27 PM
I saw some of your other photos. You had a close up shot of a large panfish (I think a Gill) that you caught while walleye fishing and I could see the spoon.

It intirgued me as I have read about folks throwing spoons for walleyes, but that was usually for southern walleyes over say 6lbs. Almost no walleye fisherman I have spoken with in the Northeast recommends spoons. Its usually jigs, harness, minnows, stickbaits, and crankbaits.

I always have had luck with a slow jig/retrieve with Krocadille spoons for Lakers from shore, and always thought that it could work on Walleyes.

If your in a boat and vertical jigging or pluging, need to make a plug knocker. If you got an old beat up throw net they make good knockers. Any kind of meshy stuff with weight on it and a dog snap on a long rope works good in getting plugs out. Just slide that down your line and the mesh hooks onto the hook and start pulling  ;D most times it works in getting plugs out.  ;D
Good luck

Thanks cfish.  I can't do that more than once during the week.  It's tiring, not too mention my girlfriend would be a little upset if I said I was fishing 2 nights in a row and wouldn't be spending any time with her.  Gotta keep a balance to everything.  The next outing is scheduled for Saturday evening.

I know  ;D just what you mean, I think we all do.  ;D Yea, I got permission to go out catfishin last night and I would only ask once a week or once every other week.  :-\ Oh well, family life, wouldn't change it now, great women still with great men.  ;D yea, something like that.  Always got to keep your lines tight and wet.  ;D Fish on!  ;)

I agree with the assumption of weight.  I have fished my entire life(almost 30 years) and just caught my first 5 pounder, actually a 5lb 6 oz LMB at 20".  It seems odd that so many people you meet just released 6,7 or 8 pound fish earlier that day, especially when the fish are under 18 inches.  I am a firm believer in the scale and I weigh almost everything.  Can't stand fish stories...

Me too.  In fact, my scale is custom.  It starts at five pounds and measures to 30 lbs.  The tape starts at zero, then goes from 10" right to 30" and up with nothing in between!!  There is no need for those other measurements since I don't catch any small fish anyway!  ::)  :P  ;D

Please send me the address of the custom scale supplier you have.  ;) I need something like that for my sorry little fish. ;D :D LOL

You can have this famous system for only $29.95 if you act now.  But wait, there's more.  If you pay in full, Cider will also throw in  "Cider's giant gamebird measurement system".  It only works on pheasants that weigh at least 5lbs, grouse over 3lbs, woodcock over 2lbs, and turkey's that weigh 20lbs or more.  Act now, don't wait. ;D

Yes, hurry...supplies are limited!  Did I also mention that it slices, it dices, and it julieannes??  No job is too big or small!  This scale is amazing and no tacklebox should be without one!  ::)

Slipbob - since you have taken over the advertisement division and invited me on a world famous walleye outing, I will present you with Cider's Miracle Measure compliments of the chief cook and bottle washer!  ;D

Nice fatties!  Glad to see the big eyes are starting to treat you well!

That is pretty much how it's been for me catfishing this year it's frustrating but it is a reminder that you are constantly on a quest for knowledge about the species you target and the skunkings are meant to be learning opportunities.

Slipbob is right about people overestimating weight sometimes, especially for skinny fish like walleyes and pike. The length throws them off I guess, because walleyes and pike are built like torpedos and have very little girth. A 23" walleye is usually about a 4 pounder, whereas a 23" rainbow trout is about a 5 1/2 pounder (sometimes even fatter browns), and a 23" pike is only about 3 pounds. (a 12" bluegill is nearly 3 pounds occasionally in the fall if they have been eating well all summer.)

The girth makes the weight of the fish, not the length.

Great walleyes slipbob, and that 10 pounder is out there lurking in your favorite lake. Keep working at it.

Well BW I fish the Susquehanna river mostly and the walleyes are there year round and don't migrated from any lakes with the mouth being the Atlantic. ;D  So we don't see quite the size that you do or other lake run fish get but 10lb fish are not that uncommon with 4-8lbers being more numerous and fish up to 12lbs showing up on rare occasions.  It's more numbers than trophies but that's OK because anything over 21" goes back anyway.  From Oct. thru mid March I have walleye for lunch more days than not. ;D  Honestly, spring is the best time for monsters for me but fall can be great!

Thanks buddy.  I'm about to eat those walleyes within the next half hour.  ;D  I think I will bake them and then pour on some butter infused with fresh sage and lemon.  It's a varitation of the walleye recipe in this month's infisherman and is quite good.   ;D  Mmmm fresh walleye.  ;D
Boy slipbob just thinking about the taste of it is torturing

Yea, I saw that recipe, and read and highlighted a few articles in this month's infisherman too. Went to Wal-mart to look for some of the jigheads and sassy shads that were in the article too, but no luck there. When and if I ever get my boat  :'( going to try and hit Saratoga up for some fall fishing. I'll get in touch with ya.   :D

Well I probably will not be hitting the water for at least three weeks. This weekend is quiet time with my children and possibly some trout fishing. Next weekend I am away on Business in Tennessee. That should be cool. I know I am missing the prime time for some serious fishing. Oh well I will just look up your posts and that will do for now. Keep them coming buddy.

Anyway how's a man supposed to fish while away on business. ???

Well, if things go the way my boss is talking right now, I might be making a trip to visit some of our remote nursing stations in northern Manitoba.  If I do get rooked into making a trip, I'll either be working overtime or I'll have some tackle with me and I'll be fishing a bit in some of those pristine waters.

From what I have seen, you are pretty bang on Slipbob.  I'm not sure all locations would have lakers, but there are places one might be able to get into nice brook trout as well, lake whitefish might be possible too.

It would be a 3+ hour 1 way, differently a haul.  :whistling: That is way I don't get to Owsego or Altmar any more, to fish elbow to elbow with thousands of lines going in and out of the river :cursing: , unless that is the real reason, LOL. But, I will say that Slipbob normally doesn't have a soul around at the spot, LOL. And would have to visit the town to the home of Uncle Sam.  :flag:

Actually got out there for a few hours myself Sunday evening and caught two 18 inch clone eyes.  The place was packed. I had to settle for spot #6 because of the high water.

I've had family obligations up the wazoo this past week but things are looking better now.

Well slipbob we did have a pretty good day. All pike.  6 for BW and 4 for the Grumpster but her caught the biggest pike. Man was it cold. My motor did not want to start and when I finally was ready to give up it started. I knew it was going to be rough when the drain plug was frozen at the bottom of the boat. All in all lot's of fun but we never caught 1 walleye. The pike were really hitting the lures. I had one nearly rob me of my rod. Well the boat is now parked for the winter. :'( :'( :'( Wait it is nearly hard water season ;D ;D ;D

Slipbob...you bet this is the best time of the year....water temps yesterday were 41F and 42F where we nailed alot...not too many more days until it starts to freeze over...some of the smaller sloughs already have a light skiff or completely covered...aggressive feeding will last well into the start of hardwater until we start hitting -30 or more....2" perch was the largest in the ones i cleaned up....and alot of freshwater shrimp as well....Grump

My walleye reservoir has very cold water all year, I doubt it gets much passed 65. I have found stuff in the stomachs of walleyes year round oddly enough. The only reason the reservoir is so cold is because the water is pumped from an alpine stream, kannah creek, into this reservoir.

Most all of the counties here in Eastern NY that border the Hudson river have lots of ticks.  It get worse as you head down the Hudson towards NYC from Albany.

I got nailed twice by deer ticks when I still lived in Dutchess County.  Got Lyme titers drawn, just in case.  They were negative (whew!)

Well not to drag this thread off into tickdome but you lads shouldn't be pulling on those ticks removing them like that . It usually leaves part of the head attached to you and thats where the diseases get put into you often . Use some alcohol or anything to get them to release their grip then slowly remove them so as not to separate the head from the body attached to yourselves . If it never attached itself to me at one time or another then it doesn't live . LOL ;D ::)

Ah lads when the boogers get me they might be brown or whiteish in colour and after feasting you see them turn Blue as they bloat up with my blood . I think peroxide would help in the removal too . Use anything even gas or turpentine but don't separate the heads from the bodies .
If they get into your mustache just roll your tongue over it and they will stick to your tongue and make a nice snack . ;D Much preferred by trappers over the bottom feeding walleye . ;D

Nice walleyes slipbob. With the water temperatures at my walleye lake being so low I don't know if the walleyes will be biting now. Historically they are not at this late in the year. I am going pike fishing tomorrow but next week just maaaaaaaaaaybe I will head up to the walleye reservoir and give it a shot; I'm pretty sure they will be schooling away from where the freezing alpine kannah creek water gets pumped in... at least I have a location ::)

Aren't getting tired of walleye filets are you slipbob ;)

You are a walleye god!!! Hey and back on the tick thing. It is not wise to smother the tick in anything!!! that tend to make them dig deeper. The doc says to pop'em out like a zit then check to make sure the head is still attached. I have had many of the nasties on me during hunting and have removed them that way wit out repercusions. However if there is any swelling go see a doc (happened to my wife cuz she is alergic to any bug bites)

You must realize though that nearly all of my walleye fishing is done from shore on a pretty large body of water so without a boat I just can't produce many fish during the summer because they are unreachable from shore in a big lake so I am at a serious disadvantage.

Slipbob, I think if you had a boat the 'eyes would have a serious disadvantage.
Can't wait to see more pics.

I got ya covered buddy.  I'm off work for the next 5 days so I'm planning on doing some walleye fishing and I'll make sure I get some on your behalf.  I'm not too psyched up about this new moon coming Friday but the bite should still be pretty good because the water temps are prime right now and I have been seeing some huge schools of baitfish in my spots which means only one thing.  Dinner time for some walleyes and I'll be right there to set up the table for em.  ;D

Nice fish Slipbob!!  I think this week is setting up to be great.  Mid November with a warm up to mid 50 deg days and the first quarter moon at the end of the week.  Sounds like prime conditions to me!  I'm back to work tommorow but hope to get out after em' toward the end of the week.  The fish in this neck of the woods seem to be transitioning to their winter hangouts as well.

Maybe you aren't slippin, it could just be that the population of walleye in your secret place is slippin.

Hey I was just courious Slipbob, do those walleye or any fish in your area have high levels of murcury in them? Here in Maine we get acid rain from our neighbors to the west of us, and our fish have murcury in them from it. There are warnings in the law books about eating fresh water fish. The general guideline is about 1 to 2 meals of fish a month max. I think your every other night of fish exceeds that.  ;D . Do you have any problems with acid rain in your area?

Not a chance.  The lake has the unique problem of being underfished and the walleyes are there in huge numbers.   Imagine a lake several miles long that has at most 5 or 10 guys over the course of two days fishing the whole place.  Pretty sweet!  Even lakes that have huge populations of certain fish have periods especially in early spring, summer and late fall when the shore fishing is just tough no matter how good you are.  Now if you have or use a boat it's a whole different story.  Catching fish with a boat when you can troll and use sonar is almost too easy.  ;)  I know a lot of so called walleye gurus who can catch limits consistantly while trolling with dowriggers and planer boards but once you stick em on the bank of their favorite walleye lake it's not so easy then.  ;D

having a boat definitely makes all the difference for numbers in a lake or reservoir. shore fishing for walleyes an awful slow night is 2, but a fast night is only 6 or 7. It generally, at least for me, is a consistent 4 fish around 15" plus... very rarely is it any better or any worse. I could go any time of year except late fall and early spring, even in the dead of summer, and get 4 walleyes about that size. GO figure, as long as you can find good fishing spots there is no reason you shouldn't be able to catch fish in the dead of summer too, I do it in 100+ degree weather!

nice  :clapping:  those fish are definitly looking a lot healthier this time of the year.

most of the eyes i'd catch in the spring (not many) were full of bluegills ,the gills would suspend just below the surface at night in the shallows and provide an easy target .

why don'y you take some action shots of the walleyes in the water while your reelin e'm in so we can catch a glimse of your secret walleye lure  ;)

All these pictures of fish, but where is a picture of the lure/jig you are catching them on???????????

That my friend is top secret info and I can't be showing pics of that.  8)  That's the first way to lose out on a good thing you worked hard to find.  Seriously though, I have said this before, but I got guys who know where I fish and if I start showing pics of what I am catching these fish on I'm gonna go to my spots and have some guy fishing with the lures I use.  That's stuff I don't need.  ;)  I don't use any live bait at all to catch these fish it's all artificials and I'm not going to make it that easy for people.  You gotta do your own homework like I did.

 nice catch sb  :thumbup_smilie:

as hungry as those eyes are it wouldn't be to hard to figure e'm out
with a small assortment of shallow running stickbaits and a couple curlytail jigs i'm sure i'd be able to put a few on the stringer too.     locations a lot more important though-- i wouldn't be giving out my hotspot either.

hope we get a few more weeks at least of mild weather- winters long  and i aint done with those big trout yet   :P

Hi Slipbob - I'm amazed you're still catching walleye, I thought you'd have eaten most of the population by now!!    Congratulations on a successful summer, or should I say, open water season, you did well.  I like seeing pictures of happy fishermen, so keep up the posting next year.  I don't know if you get ice in your area, but if you do, switch over to Iceshanty.com, and let us see what you get on the hard water.  Best regards!

nice stringer of cold water eyes ,
looks like you know how to adapt to the changing conditions and still pull in a few when the fishing gets tough.
2 weeks without fishing :-\   i       lets hope for some fishable ice by newyears day at least-  even with wool socks and 5mm neoprene my feet are freezing standing  waist deep in the frigid flows and the fish arn't as hard fighting now- i'm about ready for some ice now myself  :o

Thanks for the show, Slipbob.

wow, 300, that is a great # to aim for. only if I could catch a third of that in eyes, it would be a record for eyes in a year, h*ll, a sixth would be great, 50 eyes, never know, there's next year, right.
Fish on! slipbob
