Hit a few smallie holes last night after work and was in the process of getting the skunk when this big fella hit. Took a Rapala DT-4 ticking rocks running up current in very shallow water. Maybe the strongest smallie I've ever caught. Med action rod and fireline and he gave it a run for it's money. ;D I love river smallies! Didn't get a tape on him...ran to the truck, snapped a pic, and back in the river to get another day. Guessing 18 inches or a little less but he was FAT ;)




Absolutely gorgeous colors on this fish...I really wish someone could have taken a good pic for me.  :-\

Nice fat fish. I am in the same boat when fishing alone though. What is the best way to take a picture of your fish when you are by your self.

nice fish pike guy!  gotta LOVE river smallies!  tiny and baby torpedoes are my favorite river baits.  gotta LOVE topwater river smallies!  (floating raps are great too)

thats an awsome smallie!!!!! I've only fished a river system one time with smallies in it, and caught one that was 4lbs. Just like you, I was all alone. Only my car was 4 miles away!!!

you cant beat the fight of a river smallie...id take a 2 pound river fish over a 4 pound lake fish any day...

Thanks, I'm lucky to live in an area that holds lots of nice smallies. ;D They are a blast to catch and this year I should have access to more of them with the canoe ;)

Fished this Saturday on the big lake and got into some nice Sauger. Turned out the first fish of the day for me was the biggest Sauger We've ever seen.... 22 inches and just a hair under 4 1/2 pounds. (5 lb 13 oz is the state record) I think it was on its 'last legs" as it had a gigantic belly on it which didn't have anything in it but fat...... and the pic doesn't do it justice at all  ;)
