Title: BIG LAKE
Post by: abishop on Jul 02, 2021, 06:28 AM
Looks like the north winds are making 8-10 foot waves today. So, guess I have to try for some gills. Maybe by Tuesday the big lake will be settled enough so I can try for some gold.

I took in a lake trout to mount once that had a fresh yellow perch in it's stomach. The lake trout was caught in 100 feet of water on the bottom.

One guide maintained perch numbers hadn't decreased they just went deeper.

Was out of Michigan City Tuesday and got skunked. Didn't move around too much as kiddos wanted to play on the beach. Marked fish in 30 fow and saw a number caught there. Another boat at the launch found some in 17 fow.

yea we got a cooler full.  found some marks on bottom way out from the majestic star cassino.(i think thats the name?)  found a trench about 3 ft deeper than the rest and set up.   tied the chum bag to anchor rope and cracked a couple pops.  action was slow for half hour then it was furious.  most were dinks(8" or less) though.  although 1 was 14-1/4".  scraps in the freezer for another chum session.

dam man! Ask for reports then when you get them you say they are lying?!
Title: Re: BIG LAKE
Post by: abishop on Jul 25, 2021, 09:36 PM
I may need to clarify, I did not need to insinuate that anyone was lying. I just am stating that I feel a lot like spooled. A picture is best proof. Just that I haven't heard anyone getting a cooler full all year. A few here and there at best. Sorry if I offended you, not my intentions. It is good to hear that someone is having luck. Just jealous cause I wish it could be me. Maybe next time. Keep on filling the cooler and freezer.

Title: Re: BIG LAKE
Post by: taxid on Jul 26, 2021, 11:36 PM
I wonder if it's a similar thing to the salmon that move north out of Indiana Lake Michigan waters in the summer to Michigan Lake Michigan waters? I know my yellow perch that I raise are originally a Great Lakes strain, and they don't like the warm water in my pond in the summer. The larger ones that over about 12 inches just sulk on the bottom and wait out the summer. The smaller ones it doesn't seem to bother as much. If I catch the larger ones in the summer I've had them bleed at the gills if I press down on them via the gill cover.

OTOH the Great Lakes have undergone big changes in the food chain with reduction of amphipods, and clearer water and less dense zooplankton thanks to the advent of invasive mussels and other competing exotics. And of course a worthless competing zooplankton know as the Spiny Water Fleas.

What was summer like last summer? Was it cooler?I can't remember.  But then I can't remember what I had for breakfast some days!

Could also be related to hatch success and survival of one or more age classes of yellow perch several years back when the size anglers seek today were hatching. I.e if a the present 10 inch yellow perch is 5 to 6 years old what was the hatch and survival rate of perch hatched in 2015 and 2016?

The following link discusses perch decline etc in Lake Michigan albeit Wisconsin waters. Lo and behold the number of egg masses recorded is a pittance in 2017 and 2018 (2015 and 2016 N/A) compared to previous years with some exceptions.

Talked to guy a couple of days ago that said since they shut down the central basin for gill nets, lots of commercial guys moved to the western basin and there are nets everywhere.

Title: Re: BIG LAKE
Post by: abishop on Jul 30, 2021, 02:34 PM
yea but regular fishermen have a limit.  der, that sounds about rite. so whats a limit for then?
Not sure what the limit is for commercial fishermen. I do remember that in the 70's you could get live fresh jumbos for 1 dollar a pound. There was a commercial fisherman back then, (think their limit was like 1'000 pounds a day. Anyway. he would put miles of nets out, and take way more than was legal. Used to get a ticket every night, pay it and go out and do it all over again the next day. He said the fine was trivial and he didn't mind paying every day. They should of impounded all his equipment after a few times. Just saying. Thought he did this thru the whole season. Maybe years.

WOW, DIDN'T MEAN TO JERK ANYONES CHAIN. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WHEN I WENT OUT I POSTED FOR ALL TO KNOW. Don't get your feathers in a ruffle. Limits are being taken. I have outside info. As far as posting pics if you want to see a few pics just send me your number and I will text you a pic. I haven't learned the fast way to post here. IT TAKES TO LONG (for me). So get off your high horse and fish the plentiful lakes around your neck of the woods. Unfortunately, I don't have a whole bunch of lakes near me where I can get my limits each and every time. I know you fish at least 5 days a week. I just wish I had your life. I will get mine . DON'T WORRY, don't need you to have your blood pressure go haywire over anything I may say. PEACE BROTHER, AND THANK YOU for all your success and pics.

Title: Re: BIG LAKE
Post by: abishop on Aug 25, 2021, 06:32 PM
Everyone where I was, was getting fish. Most were anchored. Fish were so tight to the bottom they showed up as red not fish icons. Started out from the ditch, only had 2 in 2 hours then son got a call from one of his friends that was out and got their limits in 2 hours. Guess they threw back a lot of little ones. All fish caught today for us were 10 to 12 inches. Only 2 smaller ones. Had a late start. Didn't  get on the water till after 9. Couldn't hook up till around 11:30. Going back Thursday and Friday, (weather permitting). Never marked a perch just red on bottom. Nothing west. Look me up I will put you on the fish. Be at Chiefs when he opens. That sun and heat just is too much 4 me. Hope to be home by 11. LOL

Good to finally meet you bishop . Sharp looking boat ! For everyone else go get ya some they are everywhere look for the boats . Less then 2 hours three man limit and some toads at that !  But whatch your count we was 2 fish over three guys on the boat he miscounted one time and said we were three over the second time he counted said we were two over made us throw three fish back and wrote all three guys on the boat a ticket for over fish limit. There was a gentleman next to us around the age of 60 to 70 years old all by himself he was one perch over and had gotten a ticket as well. Between the three on my boat and the gentleman by himself none of us had ever received a ticket and the 30 plus years of hunting and fishing but yet this young DNR officer wasn't giving no breaks he told us the ticket is between $115 to $500 depending on what the judge wants to do we will end up going to court over this one! That being said count and double count

Dustin, that sucks. Glad you got yours.  About 15 minutes before you left was our last bite. Stayed till 12:30 and never found another fish. Only put 6 in boat. Went to black ditch Must have been 50 boats there. Only seen 1 caught. Looked 10 to 50 fow. When that wind changed from the east they were not to be  found. Went back by the condos, (nobody there). Only seen one group of red on my graph. I do believe it pays to get out EARLY. Nothing like the last few days. Good luck tomorrow. I am going to take a break.

Thanks for the tips AL.  We kept 10 each, nothing big but not bad for our first time trying. Tossed a lot of small ones back. We saw the big group of boats by Mt. Baldy but decided to stay a little closer to the mouth. Stopped catching about noon and decided to join the group.  Caught 2 and then nothing.  Shortly after everyone split up. All of ours were in 32'

Tough day on the lake, winds were howling from the south. So drifting was the plan of attack for the day. Got a late start. Never a good thing Got on the water around 9 and boated a few right away. After 10:30 not another bite. Threw in the towel about 12:30. Ended up with 9. Tough morning. Tomorrow will be better. Should be on the water around 6:30.

Another tough day on the lake. Got 10. Couldn't troll/ to hard to control. Couldn't drift/ too fast. Had to anchor. Did catch 5# drum. WHAT A BATTLE. Also got the anchor rope a couple times. Did see quite a few chrome taken off the pier. Perch is done for next week. Not to sure we will be back on them this season. All in all a terrible perch season. Hope we are able to get a few more. Keeping fingers and toes crossed. Not very many boats out. They were the smart ones.

Must of been a school bus load of kids, they were chanting and cheering. My grandson from KV track team goes there and runs the dunes then take a dip in the lake, nice day yesterday.

Not much happening. Looks like we are going to have to wait another week or so. Just hope we can have another shot at some. Calling for 21 foot waves tomorrow. That would be a sight to see.

I was near Lake Huron in Northeast Michigan and checked out the local river the salmon run up (Alpena Thunderbay River) Water was still warm and no significant run had taken place while I was there. Allegedly it started about the time I left a couple of days ago according to the MDNR fishing report, but I'm skeptical. The water in the river was close to 70 F.

Going to try around the mouth of burns on Friday. Hoping the rain and cold weather might get something going. Seen a few reports of some nice kings caught. One was up in the ditch a ways.

Yes, it is getting close to that time. Once the kings come the perch go way out. Still hoping for another perch fry.
