Hello. I'm new at this whole fishing thing and i'm looking for a place to come and ask random (and often stupid) questions. Seeing as the guys at Wholesale look at you as if you were from outer space when you ask a simple question i though this might be the place.
Question 1: How come guys are fishing already? I thought it was closed till May 15. Are there lakes that don't apply to this rule? If so, which ones?
-
Do not know where you are from but we fish year around here in NY
-
The first step would be to establish where you are from. Im assuming Alberta, correct?
-
Stocked rainbow trout lakes are open all year, limit 5 per day. Check your regs for all other lakes and streams. You should have got a copy with your fishing licence. Hope this helps and dont be afraid to ask any questions here,,,,,we will try to help.

Yes, I am from Alberta. Edmonton more specifically.
Thanks for the info Rutman.
While I'm on a roll....
Question 2: Is it safe to launch a boat into the North Saskatchewan River (50th Street) at this time of year or is the current still too fast? I have access to a 16' aluminum with a 20hp motor.
-
Its safe to do so but.....the river is notourius for big rocks.......I always head upstream incase i hit one and take the prop out (again) then you can at least float back to the 50st ramps. I would also caution the temp of water is cold and make sure all lifejackets are up to snuff.

Thanks for all the info so far...
Question 3: When watching fishing shows on tv they often only use the lure to fish - no bait. I always thought you needed worms or minnows or something to fish with. What's the deal. Do i need bait on my lure?
-
only 1 000 001 questions? you'll get more...and then you'll realize no one can answer them?
anyway, popped in here, cuz I finally found a question I can answer.
#3. NO. you don't need bait on a lure.
fish bite something for many reasons. and 'tricking' a fish to bite a peice of wood, metal, feathers, etc is fun! beyond saving money buying lures (and you'll see that , this is DEBATEABLE), lures often allow you to fish More water quicker. with a boat you can fish many yards in just a few minutes.
bait would never work, moving at that speed.
Keep asking questions!

you dont need bait. some fish will bite a peice of garden hose with a hook on it. i got a few liking a .223 brass casing with a hook in it. you just have to make it wiggle like its alive and an easy meal.

Just look in your grampas old tackle box....thats what he was catching them on years ago, same principal applies. Good Luck out there.
