Title: Stupid question about 8 hp. Yamaha 4 cycle
Post by: taxid on Nov 20, 2021, 08:36 AM
I bought it a used couple of years ago and it starts right up, runs at idle on the lowest setting, and never had any issues with it. Other than the prop got dinged up it runs like it's brand new. Been bringing it into the house instead of winterizing it.

Should I be doing more?

I'm an artist not a mechanic so I lack in that area. Thanks in advance!

The beauty of an outboard winterizing ez. Lower unit so water drains   Would be a good time to also drain your lower unit gear oil make sure no water in there to freeze

Lower unit gear oil should be done every 100 hrs or yearly

you can do what you need to set that motor inside like you do. dont need to throw a hundred or two for winter set spell.  if lower unit isnt leaking its should be fine inside. i would just run the carb dry and set it on the stand.  in 4 months set back on boat and go.

Great little outboard.  Only thing id add is seafoam it or run it out of gas conpletely.  If you want to get freaky drain the bowls on the carb.

Thank you all! I'm just going to drop it off at the experts although after watching a Youtube video changing the spark plug, oil, and fuel filter looks pretty easy.

and a dab of seafoam in every tank.  i have seen other peoples gas lines turn to goo.  my gas lines get dry rotted they are so old and have never failed.  in my opinion thats all the proof i need.  our gas is getting almost as bad as our foods with added nonessentials.
