Title: New motor for the old girl
Post by: krispcritter on Dec 02, 2021, 09:19 AM
I'm stoked. Freight truck delivering a 2021 Suzuki 4 stroke, 30 up electric start with power tilt and trim, tiller steer motor to my in laws shop today.  Replacing a 1988 20 hp Johnson 2 stroke I fried over the summer.  Merry Christmas to me and my family.

Wife sent me a text...the eagle has landed.
She's excited too. Since her last Lupus episode, odors bother her and the 2 cycle exhaust  really bothered her. Hope being a 4 stroke and quieter helps.

Anyone know if all the new motors have built in warnings? This 1 has a high-water temp, low oil pressure and a general check engine warning. I'm really happy about that. No more worries of a thermal nuclear melt down like previous motor. Automatically drops RPM to 3000 or less until problem is corrected. Gives you a "limp mode". Won't have motor on boat until spring but from what I've read in the manual thus far I'm going to be really pleased.

I know mine does ,Merc wouldn't warranty mine unless all instruments like tac, heat ,oil or over rev gauges we're installed...gives piece of mind and does have automatic rpm lowering if something is detected ,. May be a pain at times but price of motor I'll live with it .... FISH ON¡!!!!!!!

Thats awesome!  I may be in that boat (pun intended) as I destroyed the lower unit terribly on rocks while balckfishing.  I cant find a decent replacement.  The new '22 suzukis are looking really nice.

I swear that I got the only one in the country that was in stock. All the marinas online said out of stock, back ordered, or floating on some barge somewhere. Good luck.

If you don't mind me asking how much does it weigh? The only downside I can see with my little 8 horse Yamaha 4 cycle is it seems to weigh a l lot more than a 8 horse 2 cycle. Getting it on and off my transom for this old man is quite the chore! Oh I can carry it along but lifting it up is the hard part!

Again beautiful motor!

Heck that's not much more proportionally than my 8 horse Yamaha! I could look it up but mine feels like it's about 100 lbs.!

Thanks for responding!

It is the lightest outboard in it's class. I would have preferred the F N R shift to be on the tiller handle like some but those motors were pushing 200 + pounds and I was concerned with weight. Plus none of them were in stock..anywhere in the states. I even tried to order one from Singapore but had troubles with the money transfer so searched for any 30 hp in stock in the states. This one came up from Tennessee I believe.

It's older than that. I bought it used but don't recall the age. But it still feels like 100 lbs!

Sounds about right! Thanks for looking.

I dropped mine off at the local marina to get serviced. Maybe next time I'll do it myself .

She's on and ready for some tooling around at 1/2 and 3/4 throttle to finish out the break in period.
Got just a bit of wiring to clean up before she's ready for the water.

It should move her pretty good, especially compared to the old 20.
And being a 4 stroke, will troll WAY down for you.
Real quiet too!

Have fun.

Thats what I call Sweet  :thumbup_smilie:  Out of curiosity what kind of $$$$ ? I'd like to switch out a 40HP 2 stroke to like  40-60 4 stroke on a 16' Lund.
