Big fly rod brookie from the other day
« on: Dec 12, 2020, 10:10 AM »
he was about 17", maybe bigger; fly is a 3XL size 6 streamer hook in his mouth for reference (look at those teeth!).  His kype got stuck in the net when i was trying to release him lol.  Brookies weren't my first target species, but saw a pod of them and some were pretty big, this was one of the largest I believe.  Landed 4 total but the others were cookie cutters/fall yearlings.  This fish fought wicked hard, he was super heavy, my 6 wt. was bent right over.  Even fought harder than quite a few of the salmon i've caught this fall.

Nice fish!

The spawning larger male brooks do easily get their large teeth stuck in netting. I was culling a pond and was throwing the male brooks for next year on the other side of a 12 foot deep seine that cut off part of the pond. More than once I had to shake the netting to free one that got it's teeth caught in the netting.

Thanks guys, I got a self timer pic (shows it's girth good) but the lighting was bad so i didn't upload it, my biggest brookie of the year for sure.  It had to be 3 Lbs.

wow, yeah they do have pointy/sharp, jagged teeth.  You wouldn't want to grab one this sized by the lip   ;)
