Hooked on a Feeling(Striper)
« on: Aug 28, 2018, 03:32 PM »
I had a feeling it was time. Water temps at highest. With cooler water close. Warm water bait (pogies) had seamed gone and reports of blues only made me think that. I snagged a couple of schoolies thinking they were pogies. So I get fly rod trolling and smash after smash I landing 17-20” on 6#.
All alone blitz me and birds 4” rubber shad fish after fish. Up it to 6” shad they(20-24”) choke it. I was done no more small fish. I troll back to cove.
The phrase we use dirty whirlpool. When pogies get scared and baitball up. So I see schools on move snag and drop first one. Snag 2nd & live line both. This is what I live for. Here I am two rods in kayak & great baits. It got real crazy.
I broke the line on every pole I brought. Fly10#,baitcaster10# Penn 650 w/30mono40# floro leader penn 750ss 35# braid 2x.(snag and drop) on giants.
I’m tying all new leaders and hooks. 35# . Going to have to step up to 50#. No phone , no one around. Landed 35” later on. Should have brought lever drag rod. Got always think your going for worlds record big things swim in ocean. Great night

You sure it was stripers breaking you off and not blues?  If they were stripers I'd check your drag settings.  Between the drag the ability to be pulled around in a kayak I don't think 50# fluoro is really necessary but to each their own.  I use it in the canal bc it helps but kind of seems like overkill in the yak.

I was thinking the same thing. Especially with 35-40lb fluoro. Ive caught 40"+ stripers on 25# fluoro that choaked the bait almost to the swivel.

The 4lb test line class record striper is over 25lbs!  I think blues were chopping!

Chop, chop.   Time to put the expensive stuff away for a few weeks.

They get much bigger than that and fight even harder. 15 - 20lbers are fun on light tackle.
