Hit the river for a few hours last night to chase some cats, but who knew that just the dogs were out...well...puppies? I've never seen one of these things live, but I had to untangle that dude from the line and he was incredibly uncooperative. Pretty cool to see one. Check this guy out...

I will never forget catching the first one I ever saw. Back in the younger days sitting on the bank of the river with a few friends drinking beer. Brought that thing up to the lantern light packed up our stuff and left. Thought it something muting

mud puppys are cool but harmless remove the hook with as little harm as possible and let the ugly guy go ...remember they are protected in nys so don't be taking one home to show off the baby sea monster you caught
-
Yes, they are very cool and protected. Caught one on Sandy Ponds while ice fishing. It made a croaking noise, kinda walking around before I put it back down the hole after removing the hook. I think they are a kind of salamander?

Monster pup for sure I have see many young ones in the tribs of the Hudson
-
Used to catch them once in a while fishing the mohawk river, ugly for sure.
-
