We got ours planted yesterday. ;D
I take it you got your plants in this afternoon?
Wheres RG's garden pictures?? :P :PMaybe he's modest, Dom! LOL :rotflol:
Yup
Planted 3 weeks ago
Played heck covering plants these last 2 cold spells.
2 beefsteak tomato plants look a little ruff but might make it.
Wife is gonna pull them and plant 2 new ones if they don't look better by the weekend.
Raised bed
12 x 24 foot
Used 2 x 10's
I got a picture over on FB
If I get up the energy I'll copy/past to photobucket and get a pic of it here.
Got planted last weekend, I'll add some pics later but we took a year off due to pests and blight. After some research we decided to do a big burn right over the garden and till in the ashes, along with some Manure and Humus. 90 % planted just have to get some Zuchinni and the peas&beans in. Also Mom got me a new Cherry tree to replace the one the Jap. Beetles killed on me last summer. Don't worry, I chipped up the wood and smoked a nice free range Turkey ;D ;D
Hell of a crop of buckets there Mac. Looks to be a couple heirloom varieties mixed in ;D
Rg
Yup Bob.
In spite of the effort, she still lost 1 tomato and 1 pepper plant.
Mac
For me - it's not worth the time, $ and the effort.
But she enjoys it.I would rather go to the farmer's market and buy what I want, when I want it.
Happy wife......happy life.8)
Something about having greenery around that soothes the spirit.
I've always had house plants ( most of them legal ::)).

A month back I planted 200 daylily tubers on the hill behind my place.
It snowed while I was planting.
The tubers were 3 days late getting to me and looked really sad and dried out when I planted them.
Lots of work for sure.
I have watered as suggested.
I was out there looking at the hill last night.
I think 8 have come up.
Hey Bob - watcha doin next week? 8)
If I had to guess, I'd say fishing ;D
Rg
Well that was a long monotonous day yesterday...wow why so many.....you sell them????? that seems like a lot of work!!!!!!!!!
Stood there and filled 2800, 12" flower pots to plant mums in next week... Only 3200 more to go...
the other answer would be "not working".
:D
And ......no......I'm not helping you plant lilies .
Bob
wow why so many.....you sell them????? that seems like a lot of work!!!!!!!!!
I got the rest of mine planted this afternoon and got the electric fence up.... ;D ;D
I gave everything a dose of go juice today. That ought to rev things up.
Going to be a good year for berries Chris... The raspberries and black caps in the woods are loaded.... :clapping: :clapping:Hiking home from the river this morning I noticed the wild strawberries are ripe and ready for picking. ;D
I wish I had a deer "problem". ;D
No you don't.. One after noon you are watering and the next morning there are no flowers left on your squash, cucumbers, pumpkins and other plants... ;D ;D ;DPerhaps if you didn't Drobs them :)

The smaller garden is relatively easy to maintain. My secret is a Garden Weasel. http://www.gardenweasel.com (http://www.gardenweasel.com/)I have a garden Weasel also, but I also have a small Troy Built garden tiller that my fiance can use to do between rows then she can use the
I pull the head off the roof rake and a Garden Weasel head snaps on the aluminum pole like it was meant to. It stays that way for the growing season. I can reach/ work the whole garden from one side or the other without having to "get in". Only takes about half an hour or less after a rain to do the whole garden. ;D
My tiller
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1214.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc483%2FADKSPORTSMAN%2FDSCF8211.jpg&hash=08548d6a5866aeff08dd3e0ed01e905d) (http://s1214.photobucket.com/user/ADKSPORTSMAN/media/DSCF8211.jpg.html)
For me it was better to buy, first I live 30 miles from a rental place, then I have 3 sons who also use it, so it paid to buy.
I rent one of these from the local Home Depot in the spring and also in the Fall before covering the garden with heavy black plastic sheet.
Rental is $40 for the day but I rarely have it more than 3 hrs and I even use it on my neighbor's to help him out here and there.
I looked at buying one, and they really aren't a ton of bucks, but with renting I don't have to store it or maintain it.
Still, it would be nice to have my own.
I've got a rototiller too, and I give it a good tilling and mix in some new manure and peat in the spring as well, but once it's planted it's a pain getting the tiller in, out, and around because it's a raised bed (telephone poles). ;DYou probably have a bigger tiller, this one I can pick up with one hand, my daughter-in-law uses it their raised bed.
The plantings seem to get bigger each year with me. I'm going to need to set up rainwater collection. My water bills are high enough.
Rg
The rain may be a little stinky for fishing, but it's got my "freezer" garden happy.Garlic, 3 rows of tomatoes, cabbage (from seed), broccoli, cauliflower, eggplant, 2 rows of peppers, plum tomatoes, and 4 hills green pole beans (from seed) with the asparagus patch at the far end. ;D
Lol. I grew up watering in the evening. ;D ;D ;D:laugh:
And then we went and jumped in the lake before we went trolling for girls. ;D ;D ;D Those were the days..........
That might work this year but as my buddy found out a lot of years it does not work. We guttered his pole barn into a 1000 gallon tank to get spray water for his asparagus field. He got just enough water in the tank to grow skeeters. Nothing like a dry summer to burst your bubble.
I guess since you retired you have a lot of time to kill. A 16 X 24 area will take a lot of spades full to turn over let alone make it plantable. ;D
Personally, I think a little backhoe for a day would be the answer :-\
Rg
Been picking tomatoes and peppers for a week now...That looks like a fresh salsa to me!..... mmmmm :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:
Deer hit my garden last night, so now there is a fence around it, I would have liked to have put an electric fence up but I'm kindStop by the barber shop and ask for a day's floor sweepings. Spread them around the edge of your garden. The deer won't like the smell. ;D
of strapped with my upcoming wedding. ???
To all, any secrets you can share with the green peppers? They are my favorite, but yet i can't seem to harvest any. I have bought plants before with them already on it but they would never produce for me. Wrong PH, too much water, too much sun??? ......When you think of peppers, think of Mexico or the southwest. Hot, dry, sandy, acid soil. Peppers can't get too much sun. Keep the soil moist. Don't over water. Think Mexico. 8) It sounds like your soil may be nitrogen rich. Nitrogen makes pepper plants beautiful but inhibits fruit. You can buy a cheap test kit to be sure, but I would probably 1. sow some cabbage seeds around your pepper plants (cabbage will suck the nitrogen out of the soil) and 2. sprinkle some Epsom Salts around your peppers. The epsom will provide magnesium and sulphur, which peppers also need to produce fruit. This should help. Good luck... ;D

Looks great Boon but the worst thing to use in a garden is wood mulch.
It wont let the soil "breath" and will house all those bugs you mentioned...
Your better off with a weed block fabric and plant in that.. JMO...

we got sta-green landscape fabric under the wood chips second year of it and they did great last year ? i think those are ceder chips "which will keep bug the heck away" "but not sure will have to look in a minute" plus they got a weed preventive on the chips them self's .....No offense at all, but you're eating that. IMO only, fine for flower beds, but I don't want it in my salad... :-\
I did ONCE!
Skunk dug them all up including the plants. If I burry them now I use a post hole digger and put them down a couple of feet. The other night the dogs were barking at some thing so I got my big flash light. There was a skunk about 50 feet from the dog run.
I accidently caught one by the front foot in a trap set for a chipmunk a couple years ago. I thought the gal coming down the road was going to drive into the woods when she saw carrying the skunk by the trap chain with my old trapping hook to the woods across the road to dispatch it.
I'm jealous Dom!
I've been rethinking my garden plan for next year. I really like the raised bed idea. So, I think I'm going to start off with 2 4x8 beds and go from there. I'll have to get the soil mixed though. I was thinking I'd rent a small cement mixer. Come up with a soil ratio and mix it that way.
You'll have to school me on an appropriate mix.
Did you guys use pressure treated wood for the beds?
Rg
Our wast management will fill my truck with compost for $15 and I started a big pile of it a few years ago so I'm using stuff 3 years or older.... Sheep poop I get for free and have a big pile of that also composting...
I can get rough sawn hemlock and cedar from a couple of sawmills I know. I think that's the way to go. Full 2x10 ought to last a good long time. Just thought I'd ask.
I was thinking I could get a delivery of screened topsoil and mix it with vermiculite and some good compost. If I set it this Fall, I can work it again in the spring and add compost to it.
Rg
Compost tea?
Rg
What about every day waste like veggies that didn't make it or fruit gone bad?
Rg
Everything I'm reading says partial sun. Have to keep thinking on that one.
Rg
You , my friend, are the poster child for the word incorrigible ;D
My thought is to set up a 55 gal black plastic drum on a cradle using garage door rollers for wheels. I can see one large door in the end for unloading and one on the side to load. I can see some pieces of angle inside to help tumble the material. Should roll pretty easily.
I looked at a couple of tumblers at Tractor Supply today. Nice, but hardly worth the price.

I have a compost pile for my garden that is just piled on the ground.. I put all my veggie scraps, chicken poop and yard debris in it ... Does it turn to compost faster in a tumbler or just keep thing neater in the yard ? Here's a pic of my garden 😁
Nothing like fresh summer harvest ;D
Rg
My gardens are so ready to explode. I've been picking a couple zucchini a day for the last couple. I predict I'll pick 8 tomorrow, and a couple of summer squash to go with them. Peas are just about ready. Tomatoes are still green but as big as softballs. Peppers are small but loaded, and 2 of the broccoli have heads the size of a dinner plate. And the cukes are loaded with gherkin size fruit. I told the wife to get ready for the bounty.
Oh, and there's the first thunder of the day..... I swear, it's rained every other day here this summer! ;D
zucchini bread, Yum! ;D
have you guys tried this type of recipe yet? with your cucumbers?(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkEMaFLYjfA)
No Bob never tried pepper relish.. But I just told my bride I will be picking several bags of peppers at work today and toss the plants... I suggested pepper relish and she said she has a recipe for it... ;D ;D But you could always send me yours.. ::) ::)
Boon yes we make those and love them... They might also be om the agenda this weekend....
I cleaned peppers this afternoon, hot and sweet..
Got 9 vacuum packed bags at 1 + pounds a piece. Sausage and peppers all winter long... ;D ;D ;D

Gonna do another batch Thursday. This time I'm gonna mix in some green tomatoes :w00t: got some jalapeños from the farm market this afternoon. Did this batch with Hungarian Hot Peppers. Nice heat, not overwhelming.
My Bride approved.....she's a tough audience.
Rg
I'm gonna keep making salsa with the tomatoes we continue to get.
It would be nice to have some flowers around indoors in the bleak months.
I do love my plants.
Rg
Pulled all of my pumpkin ,squash and cucumber plants last night..I still have peppers and tomatos but the Romas are the last standing, and they are on the way out. Had a summer full of tomato cucumber salad, fresh broccoli and even tried 4 of the everbearing strawberries, and I'll tell you what they are still flowering and producing a dozen a week ;D They will go in a patch with a dozen more next year for sure, cnat beat fresh strawberries in september.... heck I micht try a strawberry apple pie :o On the topic of apples, I took a beating from the June bugs, they devistaed my apple and cherry trees again :-\ they all seem to be alive but boy, did they get hammered. Nute spikes next week and pulling the plug on the Garden for the year. Brownies sound good RG mine are a special treat :whistling: :whistling: :w00t:
The tomatoes and peppers still look great.. ;D
Been a long time since I've had "special" brownies ::)Well, you are retired now :afro:
But, I remember them being really....really.....really good ;D
Rg
Well, you are retired now :afro:
I got kicked out of the brownies and sent back to the boy scouts.. 8)
Those Habaneros even look hot in the picture... ;D
We pulled most of my tomato plants last night and froze 6 gallon bags of puree for sauce..
Peppers are still going... ;D
OK, I need some advice I still have green tomatoes on the vine, we haven't had any frost yet, how can I get them to ripen?
I think I'm going to build a little greenhouse on the south side of the house to start my plants.
Burpee's web site will give you everything you need there Mac.
Rg
To be honest, it didn't seem long or hard work ;D
Not bad for an old man

I'll be 66 on Wednesday ;D.

Sweet Bob.I was at my Lowes and was talking with the electrical dept manager. He's a real nice guy and I help out there quite a bit. I told him what I was up to and he said he had a couple damaged fixtures. I wasn't concerned about it being crushed a little. I laid it on the floor and did a little dance on it. So, $50 fixture for $20..... Works for me.
But....ahhhh....errrr.....where did you get the troffer from? :whistling:
Got a damaged 2x4, 4 lamp troffer from work for $20.
Rg
whats up with the newbie status? :o
By the way....anyone use WD-40 on their lures? I hear it contains fish oil.
Rg
By the way....anyone use WD-40 on their lures? I hear it contains fish oil.awesome! how many tip ups can i use again? ;D

Nothing will grow in them if there's no water.. :-\
We water ours sometimes twice a day...
If you look on line or some stores carry them but you can get battery powered self watering baskets...
Pretty early for cucumbers Bob.. ::)
Yeah, it is for sure. But, I was dabbling to see if stuff would start ok. Still have more than enough to do a direct sow. There's plenty of time yet.
I'll probably start some in bigger pots when the real time comes. I'll be covering the beds to speed things up.
Rg
Many years ago I started seeds that way.....for a certain cash crop of the time.. Worked very well. Never made any profits though. They all went up in smoke.
Rg
Somehow I managed to salvage a few brain cells in spite of myself.

Do the math. I was born in 1950. I lived the 60's and 70's to their fullest. Somehow I managed to salvage a few brain cells in spite of myself.
Rg
Yup. There's a roll of 2x4x4' galvanized fence in the garage. I want to run some 1" emt between the posts to stabilize everything. I'll bore into the post to set the and secure it with some long screws. It'll serve as the top fence rails as well.thats tomorrow afternoon's project.
I used a hand tamper to pound down the soil and rocks in the pathways. My Hands need a day to recover.
Rg
Yes they were Dan.
I love radishes. I have 8 varieties planted I think. The "square foot" plan is pretty cool.
Rg
"square foot"Square Foot Garden, great book.. Rest in peace Mel Bartholomew... :'(
Well....gotta do what ya gotta do.mine is going along great.
Rg
.........That's worth 6 degrees in my book! ;D
Also, I get it free from work.
8)
Thanks though.
Mac
I'm planted as of last weekend, late but still good. Put a yard of compost, a bail of peet and a yard of screened top soil on her this year. Pics to follow....
What could I plant in about 8 squares for fall harvest?
Rg
Some pics only you get loser ;D But so far so good.
Nice little buddy.. Hope all is growing well....... ;D
Seriously........I'm glad I only put in 3. I'm already giving them away. On the other hand, had some in a stir fry I did tonight. Delicious!
Rg
Getting enough water? My Zuchini are coming on fast. Some are putting on a pound a day.I believe they are getting enough water, I water the days it doesn't rain, they are getting an inch of water a week!
Rg
RG you need my famous zucchini relish receipt .... ;)
What to do with your zucchini?

1 1/2" zucchini slices
Butter
Sea salt
Cracked pepper
Lemon juice
Chopped fresh parsley
Parmesan cheese
Coat well, grill slow till tender. Fresh corn, cukes and tomatoes from the garden.........we went veggie tonight. Yum!

Can't use a gun so need to borrow my friend's crossbow.
any how carefully with poisons like attack and I have said there not that good for any thing like bad for the envirement poison is..
Lol. I bought my wife a .177 pellet rifle years ago, and we haven't had a squirrel problem since. ;D
I haven't ever even had to consider it. I've seen her shoot the eye out of a chipmunk that just peeked his head out of the wood pile at 20 paces! ;D
How many new windows have you bought for the neighbors?
:D
Yesterday morning I fabricated/attached a hose to the condensate tray on the A/C and ran it into a small "rain barrel". It's so humid out, I "made" 12 gallons of water for the garden in 24 hrs. ! ;D
Soon as the weather breaks, I'm pulling the zucchini and pepper plants. I'll start some radishes...........mNobody likes a quitter! :P
Rg
I am beginning to think you enjoy eating more than fishing RG
I hate to say it, but I can't wait to feel the need to wear jeans and a sweatshirt to keep warm.
Rg
What happened to those sun flowers ? Did Michel Phelps pee on them to get them to grow that big?? Of you feeding them the same stuff???
Posting these pictures for drowndin dots ..Thanks Dom, I'll take some good ones tomorrow to show the progress .... Or lack of in the case of my Maters..... And to better capture the layout.

Thanks for the links Boon. I'll get something more substantial than those electric units. I'm looking at a 5 hp MTD chipper /shreader tomorrow evening. Looks like a solid, all steel machine. Good reviews and parts are available. They're asking $150.
Rg
It looks doubely great buddy... ;DI'm pleased with everything I grew this year ;D
Nice plot DD. I'm gonna steal your pickle frame idea next year.In that case, it WAS a cheap green house from Christmas tree shops. The plastic got destroyed during a storm while I was in the hospital. Simple to replicate, but I didn't want to wast it so my Bride and I .... Mostly her ;D came up with that. I used to make tee-pees with bamboo steaks. This by far trumps my idea. All organic BTW Only used Neem Oil for pest control. One thing I do, and I cant stress this enough, is burn every spring. And there is no such thing as too much. I burn every down branch, leaf and then some, great food and kills mold and fungus.
Rg
I thought it looked familiar DD. We've got the same greenhouse. Haven't lost the cover yet. We tried the trellis thing with chicken wire a couple years ago. It worked okay but the cukes always wanted to grow inside the wire "O's".Thanks ;D
Nice garden! ;D
Thanks Ed and Bob.. The hard part i find about my beds is they dry out fast. But than some of them have 5 different types of vegetables in them... ;D I'm going to try rows of garlic in my empty bed ( plant next week) for the winter and plant around them in the spring..First full moon in October ;)

For garlic planting DD? I've got one bed I planted last spring. It didn't produce well at all so I pulled it and planted radishes. My bride's uncle has a very successful garlic harvest every year and that's his schedule. Works for him and he fills a sack with fresh garlic year in, year out. Plants the buds covers the garden with leaves and compost, and the first green he sees every spring is the garlic.
Rg
Boon I have a couple soaker hoses and they work ok but I need 9 of them and some way to hook them to a manifold soil can run them all at once and put a timer on them..
Yeah think I will stick to doing it by hand..
OYE! You never stop Mac.
Rg
I don't always do them Bob, but parsnips are a fall planting, too. I was taught that that should be sewn in the fall and harvested mid-summer. ;DNot a big fan of parsnips. Think I'll stick with some greens. Maybe leaf lettuce, spinach and chard.
And........Maine-Endwell wins the US championship and stays undefeated for the season.
I say hoist one to celebrate!
Rg
I can't fathom 50 tomato plants. With only 14 and still canning. Started a batch of sauce today. It'll be a lot of fun come time to plan next year's planting. Life is all about the 4 seasons. I could never live in a mono-climactic area. The 4 seasons are what life is about.
Rg
Looks like a good deal RG. You may have a 2 hr. ride to get there, but y that let's you find the fishing holes to hit on the easy home. ;D
Great find Bob...I used to make a half dozen Quiche per day, and sold every slice. Minus the one I decided to eat ;D
And real men , or even old hippies eat quiche... ;D
I hate raking leaves.
Rg
No wonder your dome gets burned so easily.
Rg
lol.
I still get leaves though.
My neighbors all have trees.
And they don't rake!!!!
Do you have a riding mower ?? Then run over them and bag em.. but be careful around deep piles cause they get in the drive belts.. seen a guy on 5 and hagerty he left his tractor running... it was starting to catch fire cause leaves were in the drive belts... guy was not around so kept going.. any how clean the belts so no fire starts.. instead of raking mow them..
As long as Heres no gorilla glue to remove, you can bring a rod. ::)
Rg
Stupid iPad.
I always fill hot jars with hot salsa or anything else I'm canning. Never had but maybe a couple of jars that didn't seal. Stuck them in the fridge. None have separated. Are you removing as much water from the tomatoes as possible? I give them a good squish to remove some of the seeds and as much water as I can. Then they sit in a colander to drain some more.
Rg
It's quiche day at my house. 2 summer squash, zucchini, bacon, and cheddar cheese. 1 bacon cheeseburger quiche, and an 8 egg Ice Box Lemon Pie. Yum! ;DAMEN. that is all ;D

been reading the stuff you guys are saying about canning.......stupid question......why not just freeze it? is there a reason or is it just your preference to can?
I'm not using a pressure cooker for anything.Rg
Let's hope not Dom.
Scardy cat... I'm getting a brandy new one.. My buddy has been doing my venison for me but i want to do it myself again.. Lightning cant strike twice in the same spot, can it?
I find that freezing tomato sauces especially, tends to make them watery and they lose some flavor. The sauce I can stays the same consistency and never loses flavor. I put a lot of time into my sauces and salsa. It's well worth he effort for me.There is a recipe for "Freezer Pickles"
Can't freeze pickles....so what the heck. As long as I'm at it...... ;D
Rg
I've got the salsa covered.

Found some recipes for pickling the jalapeños. They'll be good on sandwiches. And the nacho trays.
Rg
Ha! Guess I need to check my pics closer :rotflol: :rotflol:
And yes....they're regulation!
Rg
I've got the salsa covered.
Rg
All things in moderation.
Rg
All of the above, and.....you can control the sodium. Way too much salt in the store bought junk.
Rg
Yes....I wear heavy duty gloves when handling these peppers.
Rg
I didn't wear gloves thinking that just washing my hands would do the trick. WRONG!
Rg
I've been following this thread all summer now and I want to thank everyone who's contributed. I've always thought about starting a garden but every spring other things take my time and another year passes without one. But I think you guys have given me the inspiration to make it a priority this coming spring. Last weekend I dug the basic foot print (about 20'x20') down about 2 feet with the mini-ex and will be filling it in with quality soil next weekend. Do you cover your garden plots for the winter? or just rake the leaves off them? or not even worry about the leaves?
Carry on boys, much appreciated.
I used 2x8 untreated hem/fir.
Rg
My jalapeños are coming on real strong the past week. I'm going to have enough to pickle a good batch. We love them on sandwiches, subs and the like, but I've never picked them.
Rg
Sorry :-\All good, I have napkins ;D
Rg
Who would think a bunch of fishermen would be interested in this stuff and not even a fish or lure picture on the thread.. ;DI have a bunch of fish buried in my garden..... That counts ;D
With my limited garden space, I think it's almost easier to buy plumb tomatoes at the farmers market in town than to grow them myself.
Rg
I travel way down the east side of Keuka lake to get my honey.
Rg
That's the problem Dom. How long can we hold out. That sounds terrible.....
Wish you were around to test them over a frosty cold one and some shoes.
Rg
just getting started with the whole canning thing........canned some applesauce and some peaches......want to do some pickles.....any suggestions on recipes or hints for spices etc. will be greatly appreciated......also salsa and sauce......I have made a few batches of sauce myself, but would like to know how people vary it? Thanks in advance, SKUNK-MASTERI will pass on some advice I received from a most wist Fix It guy..... Use Mrs. Wages. That is all ;D
I was always told to plant the garlic when the kids go back to school. You're in that window now, and with the recent rains, it might be just right. We got 2 1/2" last night!!! :clapping:
I don't think squirrels like garlic. ;D
Supposed to plant garlic the week the kids go back to school.....
You have to listen to Mike McGraths "you bet your garden" on NPR radio 7am Saturday and Sunday..Garlic was the topic last weekend..
Thanks guys. I like my Kitchenaid. Their accessories are a bit overpriced, but they generally work pretty well.We pondered it quite a while, too but finally decided that since we already had the grinder attachment we had it half whooped. Never been sorry!
I'll ponder it some more.
Rg
Sell more bird houses and you will have it covered.
Brownies? ::) ;D
Brownies? ::) ;DLol. Yeah, except they're frozen tomatoes and spices. ::)
Lol. Yeah, except they're frozen tomatoes and spices. ::)
They're a great starter for a chili; brown and drain your meat and throw in a brick. Bang, chili. Add beans of you like. They're also great just as a side dish. ;D
Crap!!There was time...you were in a hurry. Old bull eh?
I wanted to show Donna your gardens.
Looks good, Bob. You never know. The late garden is always a gamble, but I think you'll be okay. ;D
Well this salad came from the garden, the rest is one of my favorite meals, Lasagna cup cakes... Hold the frosting..... ;D

This weekend my son and I are canning up some pickled onions and a batch of pickled hot peppers. I have a pretty fair crop of cowhorn and jalapeño and Serrano peppers left. We like them pickled on sandwiches, pizza, subs , salads and such. I'll pick up osme yellow banana peppers and maybe a basket of cherry peppers at the market on Saturday.I dehydrate most of my hots, We slice them thin, use all the seeds and pith. We blend Japs and Hungairans, grab some Habenaros from a friend and call it En Fuego..... And let me tell you I use it in about everything. You wont be disappointed. We started gifting a few shakers full to good friends last Christmas, they have not stopped asking to make sure we are doing it again ;D
Any of you dry hot peppers? I've never tried it, but I'd like to.
Rg
any special recipe??
Dom, try it with spaghetti squash some time.
You talked me into it ;DI use the dehydrator, lay some foil over the tray and poke lots of little holes.
I'm hitting the farmers market this Saturday to get a stock of other peppers. Do you all just hang them to dry or do osme use a dehydrator? I don't need much of an excuse to buy one.
Rg
Me to Bob, but how would you line the cups? Make it into a paste maybe?Shred it with a fork and layer it around the cups. I do Spaghetti squash Pie with meat sauce and mushrooms... Man it's good.
Thanks Bill..
We have spaghetti squash casserole sometimes. Make it in layers with sauce and cheese. We got ours from Gander. Works great ;D
I'm sure it will line the cups just fine. I'm looking for a couple good squash tomorrow morning at the farmers market. Gotta have a try with it.
Thanks DD. I'm starting a search for a dehydrator. :w00t:
Rg
Didn't read all through but has anyone made their own saurkraut?
Nah, I know better than that. Don't want to end up like Euell Gibbons.
Rg
Boy...I've got a good one...but I better not :-\
Rg
I woke up pretty early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. Just finished browsing back on all 54 pages of this thread. What a fun topic this has been. I'm sure most of our gardens will be winding down soon. But, we'll be planning next year's plantings and enjoying the fruits of our efforts all winter long. After all, that's what it's about, for the most part. Good eats!I agree, I have enjoyed this thread as much as you. Wonderful tips and pics.
So I just wanted to say thanks for all the help, advice and company. You're a lovely bunch of coconuts ;D
Rg
Great job on the bench Bob..
I have also enjoyed this thread.. It was great seeing others gardens and all the veggies and canned stuff...
The carrots will turn to mush..I'm not that old :w00t: :w00t: :rotflol:
Cover the carrots with a thick layer of leaves and leave them until spring. They will be the sweetest carrots you have ever ate come spring. Same with parsnips. The parsnips have worked for me but I've never had success with the carrots. My best results were layering carrots and sand in a plastic tote in the cellar. Sand, carrots, sand, carrots, etc. They stayed fresh and crisp through March. ;D
I came home from work at noon to take my tarps off and everything looked so good I watered everything.. But last week I took the electric fence down and I noticed all the ends of the tomato plants have been browsed by the deer.... I might get a couple more weeks out of it... And put my ground blind up by it.. ::) ::) ;DYou ain't gonna hunt till November :-* :-* :-*
You ain't gonna hunt till November :-* :-* :-*
I planted sweet potatoes this year. Should I be digging them up by now?
This is my first year with garlic, but I've done a ton of research and met a great guy at the local farmers market. He grows amazing garlic and has shared a bunch of info with me. Supermarket garlic is usually treated with a growth inhibitor to extend its shelf life. Although, most organic you'll find will not be treated. That said, they just don't compare to good seed garlic. The cloves are tiny. I planted a German purple hard neck variety. The seed cloves were about 1 3-4" long and bigger around than my thumb. Huge in comparison to the stuff on the shelf at the grocery store. It's very hardy and has a big, bold flavor.
I bought 8 heads of seed garlic that gave me around 60 really large cloves with some left over for the kitchen. The heads were $1.00 each at the market. I used my home made dibber with a mark at 6" deep on 6" centers. That's what was recommended to me. I built the bed 32 x 96" to accommodate rows of 5 with a 3" border.
Along about next august we'll see if my planning worked ;D
Sorry, don't know about sweet potatoes. I'd guess you'd want to dig them before the ground freezes.
Rg
Well I have been wanting to do this and started yesterday. Started making new 4 x 8 x 10" frames to put on top of my existing ones. That raises them to almost 20"... No more bending over..Had enough compost to fill one so I will be making a few trips to the sheep farm and wast management for a few more truck loads.
Beds that deep should really produce Dom. Good project for sure!
Rg
Should have phase one squirrel maze in place tomorrow to start training the local population. Put a final coat of paint on it earlier today.
Rg
Pretty cool. Can't wait to see some video.. ;DX2
It spit snow here this morning
Been doing that off and on all morning here... Still windy as heck...... :PSorry to hear , I'm fond of mums
Threw out about 100 mum plants today.
Sorry to hear , I'm fond of mums
Rg just cut into pieces blanch and freeze , that's how I do it
I don't blanch mine just vacuum pack and there fine....Never tried that , interesting , most of my peppers were made into stuffed peppers and froze
Wouldn't it be great if we "gardeners" all got together sometime, bringing our best of harvest and home made dishes to pass. That would be fun
Rg
Wouldn't it be great if we "gardeners" all got together sometime, bringing our best of harvest and home made dishes to pass.I'll bring a fork! ;D I envy you guys with the great gardens. I'm not a good gardener.
Rg
Wouldn't it be great if we "gardeners" all got together sometime, bringing our best of harvest and home made dishes to pass. That would be something! ;D
Rg
Well if it ever get that far might as well bring perch, panfish and walleye filletsThat they do..... I guess we could call it the pickle fest :w00t: :w00t: :rotflol:
They go good with veggie dishes
I don't blanch mine just vacuum pack and there fine....
I'd travel a good long ways for that feed.I can do that! ;D
Something tells me we'd have enough for you too KP. You can bring the duck ;D
Rg
Here's a trick. 8)
When freezing anything in a zip-lock bag, whether it be veggies, fish, meat, or anything else, fill the bag with your goodies and submerse it in water up to the zipper before closing. The water pressure surrounding the bag will force the air out. No sucking on a corner of the bag. ::) No more freezer burn. :-X
Try it. It works. ;D
That's a fitting table to end the year.Yup, sad to move on, but the changing of the seasons defines us here in Upstate NY and I'm excited for the rest of hunting season, Ice season commeth and still plenty of good perchin and shoreline eyes. Now for some surf n turf with a side of brussels sprouts :)
My Bride and I had Tuna Subs for dinner with pickled jalapeños and sweet pickles on the side. Pickled jalapeños are really delicious. They lost some of the serious bite, but kept all their lingering heat. I haven't tried the pickled cowhorn peppers as yet. I have a feeling they're gonna be dynamite.
I'm thinking about growing peanuts in containers next year. ....ahhhhh.....next year.
Rg
Great harvest Ed.......thanks bud. see you soon ;)
I have an actual paid vacation form my part time gig next week. That's hilarious! I'll be on the finger lakes filling the freeezer with perch and pannies. Fall fishing is the best.Do share the results, I'm most curious. I buy a jar of pickled herring once a month.
I'll pickle some fillets of course. What's life without something pickled ;D
Rg
That looks great Bob. I have a few bags of of pickerel in the freezer to use up..Man, if you paid as much attention to the small game challenge as you did to this thread :whistling: :whistling: :w00t:
I have also been looking at sourkruat recipes for something to do this weekend..
Talk to Attack about sauerkraut. He's an expert.
Pickerel should be good.
Rg
10 short of your limit.
Moderation is a good thing Bob.
;)
You fished....................I came to work.
Sounds fair.
:D
It's taken me all day to upload, downsize, and get this posted, but Breakfast anybody?

Bacon, onions, mozzarella, parmesan, fresh spinach, basil, and eggs, cherry toms, and feta. ;D
Just to let you know RG, we precooked the bacon and onions and spread that on top of the mozzarella and Parmesan. We didn't crack the eggs onto the pie until halfway through the baking time for the crescent rolls, and when that time was up we put it under the broiler for a minute or so just to firm up the tops of the eggs. They were done perfectly. No runny whites, but the center of the yokes were still soft. Enjoy. ;D
I can smell the sauerkraut from here Mac. West wind ya know ;D
Rg
Well, I'll hope for prevailing East iwnds ;D
Rg
Sauerkraut update.
We bagged it up tonight.
Got 19.5 quart freezer Ziploc bags filled.
Smelled awesome.
I saw cans of kraut at the store on sale yesterday for $2 a can.
I figure ours is about the same as 30 cans.
So we spent $20 for about $60 worth of kraut.
If it cost more than store bought I would still make it because of how good it tastes.
Oh my gosh. I'm talking bout peppers and tomatoes... :P. ;D
And I like the almanac in the picture..... ;DCan't go a year without it! ;D
Old hippies :rotflol:Uhhhh..... I understand that's way too aromatic for in the house.... ::)
Rg
Please keep us up to date with pictures. It's a very interesting process to many of us. I really don't know what a "plug" is or how you handle them.
Rg
Oh my gosh. I'm talking bout peppers and tomatoes... :P. ;DAnd Brownies ;D
That's a lot of separating and replanting right there.Do you generally start from seed, or buy plugs? I do a combination of both, I tried one of the cheap green houses and it got destroyed by the first big wind storm we had. Now it serves as my Cuke trellis ;D
Rg
Learned a bit too. I started way too many plants for what I used and started them way too soon. Hopefully I'll be able to stand the wait this spring and not get going too soon. But, knowing me.....I'll get really anxious to play in the dirt ;D
Rg
I've got lots of greenery in my home, none of fit is edible though. I like the little growing station.
Rg
Here is a picture from last year of the Meyers Lemon we have in the green house ...The Meyer lemon is amazing, We used to make a Beurre Blanc out of them at the Sherwood in and serve it with all sorts of fish ;D

Can't get here too soon for me.
Rg
Good thing I have the "little wood shop" to keep me busy DD. No ice to speak of...I'd go nutz if I couldn't get lost on the lathe.
I'm scaling back the tomatoes for sure. Just enough to harvest and eat. I'll buy sauce and salsa tomatoes. Pickles on the other hand.....I'm not sure I can grow enough in the space I have. Fortunately, I've still got a fair stash from last year. I had about 10 plants last year and bought another bushel or so. I'll have at least 15 plants this year.
I've been researching growing peanuts too, but I'll probably pass this year. I was reading about growing veggies from the bottom of a hanging 5 gallon bucket. I've got 6 posts that will support 2 buckets each :w00t: maybe beans or peppers . I'm still contemplating.
Pretty sure Dom could use the help soon. He's a busy boy this time of year. What kind of wood do you like RG? I have a few on my property, mostly maple.
It's a tough time of year. Especially for the "green thumbs" . I've taken to long walks in the woods looking for standing deadwood saplings to turn on the lathe. At least it's out in the light of day.
Rg
Maple, ash, beech, black birch, cherry.to name a few. My son is asst. superintendent at a local country club. They've been taking out a lot of trees to open up the course. I've got a pretty good supply of ash and maple. This spring we're going to raid the log piles for bowl blanks.I envy you my friend, once you decide to part with any of your creations look me up ;)
We've just started playing with turning green wood and have a stack that's drying as well. Fun stuff on the lathe.
Rg
Doing some gardening research.. thinking about ripping out a few older boxes.. reason being were not planting as much as we use to.. so thinking maybe one small box that will handle it all is in need.. sick of weeding every spring summer and fall.. looking and getting lots of ideas off pintrest and here..Have you tried the landscaping fabric? We have used it the last 2 years and it has eliminated weeding almost entirely, you get a few weeds from where you cut the fabric for your plant, but literally I spent 10 mins weeding all of last summer.
really looking in to a raised bed design you can sit on the edge and weed the garden from so not bending and stooping over trying to weed it.. thinking a 1.5 to 2 foot from ground up box full of dirt with a stable edge you can sit on.. 3x6 foot square ting to face it in to the sun rise for plenty sun maybe a latice wood back so tomato and cucumbers have some thing to grip to in the back half and maybe peppers and garlic etc in the front but will see what happens..

Sauerkraut update......Wish I could try your kraut. Being an ' ol Bohemian we use cabbage and kraut quite often. I'll bet it would be delicious with pork chops and dumplings! ;D

Avacado plant.... cool 8)
Everything I read they make great potted house plants and will produce fruit? ???
Just telling you what she told me.LOL
But she kills a LOT of plants.
(just sayin)
8)
Still snow on the ground and huge piles along the roads... :PSame here Bud :-[
Nice work Dom, I miss my greenhouse days. I'm working on setting up a lean to house off the barn for early seedlings, and a late lettuce patch. Just need to figure out how to heat it. It's very small compared to yours, about 10 x 20.
I was super depressed looking at my garden covered in 3 feet of snow this morning.Same here bud, Snow blowed a path to it :(
Rg
So pretty and Green..... Sigh.
Not soon enoughAgreed LOL
They say to just jiggle the plants every day or to have a small fan blowing on them. I think its more fun to tickle them with one of Dom's peacock eyes! ;DI used to Qtip the blossoms of my giant pumpkins 🎃
Raq Do you grow any butter fly weed? It is a mid to late summer orange bloomer. The seeds come in a pod like a milk weed pod only longer and thinner. It is a hard plant to find. It is a perennial.
I'll be starting some plants indoors in the next couple weeks.
Rg
I AM the Pollinator! ;D
And my jokes get whacked by Bob.
Sheesh!
::)
Looks great Bob.. My garlic was pooping up through what was left of the snow...
HID lamps are an option. But, Though HID lamps may produce more lumens per watt, they are colored in a less efficient range for propagating leafy plant growth.
that must have been some sight ;D
I'm an old cheapskate.
My experience tells me that T-8 lamps are the least expensive to operate. There's a reason why they are the most common source of lighting in commercial applications today. Even better, mine are free. LED's are an option. My whole house is lit with LED's. But, even the link you sent states that LED's are a poor choice for grow lights.. They just don't produce enough lumins to be really effective for the investment.
the above is a incorrect statement with modern led technology it is a older statement from back when thd leds first came out.. see with a area like mine 1.5 x1.5 foot buy 18 to 24 inches high you need minimum 5000 lumens to compare to a metal halite or a sodium vapor bulbs my pannel use 225 times .25 watt bulb about 60 watts and puts out 2000 lumens my t8's are 15 watts each and put out 60 to 70 lumens per watt so 70 x45 or 3 150 that's 5150 lumens total for sure what your doing rg yours will get gem goING and started any how another question for rg is are those mercury vapor florecent bulb you are using?? If not might want to switch to them..
HID lamps are an option. But, Though HID lamps may produce more lumens per watt, they are colored in a less efficient range for propagating leafy plant growth.
correct that Mh and hps bulbs are less efficient this is were leds are better they may say 300 watt pannels but your only running like 160 watts they are the equilvent of a 300 watt bulb in lumens but use way less power just like florecent bulbs look it up most on e bay and else ware will say power consumed that's were the hps and mh bulbs are less efficient and use 400 watts for a 400 watt bulb this is were florecent light or led is best..
T-5 lamps definitely produce more lumens per watt, but are twice the cost, more expensive to operate and do not last at peak performance as well as T-8 lamps. Their duty cycle is rated in the average of 10,000 hours before declining in performance while T-8 lamps run full closer to 20,000 hours.
One lamp they completely ignore is the induction flourescent. Probably because of their cost. I thought of using a couple 200 watt induction lamps I have, but the troffer was a perfect, cheap solution.
All this is pretty academic really. For the 4-5 weeks my plants will be starting, they'll be just fine.
like you and I have said for the weeks your planing you will be fine as long as they are a mercury vapor florecent bulb you should be fine reg florecent bulbs produce aprox 15 to 20 lumens per watt if yours are 35 watt t8 they may produce 700 lumes per bulb.. wich is very low lumen out put.. if you got 4 that's 2800 for the size of garden you have if you used mercury vapor it would really help... cause those produce about 60 to 70 lumens per watt if 35 watts per bulb that 2450 lumens per bulb x 4 bulbs is 9800 lumens wich may work for you.. like I said you may have mercury vapor bulb I am just not you and nor sure.. this is just a suggestion I am useing sylvania plant and aquarium bulbs which if wondering have the mercury in them.. the mercury produce a pink light from mine not white you can use same balast and holder just got to switch bulbs if intrested..
Rg
Well go take your mydol..
Hippie!
Every time I take a batch of brownies to work for the gang, they ask if they're " special" .

Now it's gonna rain for 2 days. :-\

I decided to turn a nice Dibbler for planting this year.

That's a lot of green Dom. Looking great.Where do I sign Bob?

If any of my gardening friends would like one, just let me know.
Rg
Do you really think it will grow?
There's no root structure that I can see.
;D
Remember that magic wand I made ;D
Rg
Well, looks like photobucket crapped out again. None of my photos are showing up. >:(
Rg
What is the core in that bad boy ;D ;D ;D
ahhhhh................The Elder Wand.
What is the core in that bad boy ;D ;D ;D
The Elder Wand is ancient and made of elder wood. It is fifteen inches long and has a Thestral tail-hair core, which is "a tricky substance that only wizards that mastered death can control."Well played sir ;D

Sorry, thats something like Mac would say...... ;D
Hey!!!
Looking good Boon.
Can't wait for fresh veggies.
Rg
Gettin pretty sick of this bi-polar weather >:(
It's early yet bud. Patience and cool weather plantings. Our traditional last frost is May 15. Plenty of time yet. Can't wait bud! I guess I just enjoyed Monday a little too much to deal with 40, windy and cloudy again.
On a positive note, I picked up some stock to make a few more dibbers. You'll have yours in plenty of time.
Rg
Boy. Our nights are still down into the 30's. Must be nice! ;D
Ya what happened to this weather ? All of a sudden it got nice out?Not here! Forecast was mostly cloudy this morning with filtered sun this afternoon, so I worked in the shop this morning while it was nice out. The clouds got thicker after lunch, started raining around 4:00 and has been raining ever since! >:(
Yeah, a few of mine are bleaching out a bit, but the newer growth looks great. I'll probably transplant the starters into larger peat pots tonight. I'm not putting them in the ground for another week or two.........just in case this weather decides to flop on me.I always wait for Memorial day just like Grandpaw taught me, but I will finally begin the garden prep this weekend! Tons of down branches to burn, should be a nice big fire for the garden this year ;D
Rg

Hey...I'm looking to build a cold frame. I want to use it to get my seedlings hardened off and to extend my options for really late season greens.I'm thinking maybe moving south might be a solid option. This weather sucks.
Any advice from my gardening friends?

I haven't updated on the Aero-garden lately.

Isn't it pretty! ;D
Bill's playing fair....Dom's the cheater with all those greenhouses at hand ;DSounds like a perfect week in my book! Yup the weather is turning finally!
Jealousy rears it's ugly head :-\
4 hours at Lowes today and I'm taking a week off. Fish, dig, plant, eat, sleep......etc :clapping: Might even squeeze in a couple campfires with appropriate adult beverages. Oh yeah, and a Red Wings ball game with my son Wednesday evening. Baseball, Highland Lager, Zwiegles and peanuts.......you betcha!
My seedlings have been getting used to the great outdoors the past few days. Yesterday they were out most of the day. Everybody is green and happy. Sent a soil sample off to be analyzed at Dairy One in Ithaca Ny. I looked into the DIY kits and even the expensive ones got terrible reviews as to their accuracy. So I figured for $12 and a little postage, I'd get a real look at my soil.
I'll be mixing up some container soil this weekend and getting my flower boxes, towers and assorted pots filled. Gotta get My Brides flower gardens going. The veggie garden is waiting till the end of the week. I've started several varieties of peppers, cukes, pickles and eating tomatoes. We decided to buy our canning tomatoes this year. With my limited space and as cheap an a bushel of Romas are, I'd rather spend my efforts on something else.
I'm putting in a really big Moon Flower trellis. 4'x 8' at least. I hope to have a dazzling display on the West side of my house. Should be fun anyway. These plants have really caught my interest.
Spring is definitely here :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:
Rg
We picked 10 for a salad with dinner last night, and they're sweet and juicy! There's still plenty left to pick. It's been a fun (and rewarding) experiment! ;D
Man I can't wait to retire LOL ;D
They did take all that sand. And they played really well. A few mid court amenities and we'll be very comfortable for our weekend matches. I really enjoy time with my Son. He's so much like me it's scary ;DI enjoy your stories about the time spent with said Son, so keep em coming ;)
Rg
Nope....not hot.....just good ;D
Rg
Now , I know I'll get greif about this, but it's proper name is a "Dibbler".....(not one word Mac! :nono:)
teehee
Not "b".
"d"
:whistling:
and why not just use your finger :w00t: :o
Couldn't help yourself ....could you.
Well.....you diddle......I'll dibble. Of course....you're a little old for that kind of thing.....aren't you?
Rg
99.7 cents cheaper to be exact ;D
I'm not too keen on wholsale spraying though. I think it would kill some really beneficial insects as well.
You are correct sir.... ;D
More bird houses..... ;)
To remedy this we decided to add 2 yards of sand, 2 large bags of perlite, 1/2 yard of pro mix, and some different compost. The dirt seems much better now than before. I am interested to hear about what others think about this approach to solving the problem.
Huh?LMAO, Lookin great RG You are way ahead of me, my limited time off has been cursed with rain.
Huh?
Well....the wax beans are almost yellow and the yellow beans are almost waxed.......but one of them is green and not yellow....but the green ones aren't particularly waxed..........ok.......they're waxed/yellow and green beans :-\Lol! The gardens are looking great, Bob. There's a lot of (retired) hours there, and it shows! :thumbup_smilie:
Rg
Ok...they're beans....some yellow some green ;D
Rg
Your yard looks great Bob...
We got 3 inches of rain since yesterday morning.. I might get some plants in the garden this weekend..
Today we got 7000 mum plugs to plant at work so I have been filling 10inch pots to put them in.
Dirty old man ;D
Rg
Looks great Ed.....Thanks Loser ;D ;D ;D
Thanks Loser ;D ;D ;D

Well, that's a wrap. All planted and starting to take off. Scaled way back this year and gave everything more space to see if less is really more. I have Hungarian wax peppers, orange and purple bell, red hot cherry, a beefsteak, early girl, 1000's sweet and yellow plumb tomatoes, 4 market more, 4 bush and 12 bush picking cukes. 4 zucchini and 4 Brussel sprouts. Decided to try a little pallet planter for my strawberry plants, they seem to like it so far. Peas and beans on the far side are 50 percent sprouted, still have to go get some chicken wire for them to climb. Man, I'm so happy to spend time in the yard in this beautiful weather! Happy Fathers day to all the great Dads on here ;D
Thanks! Just trying to make the most of what's available. So you had me at the green house today looking at my options for trellis. Found a few promising things, but want to shop around a bit first. Did pull the trigger on 6 pounds of pickling cukes because I can wait no more for my pickles ;D If you ever make it to the Cuse you need to check out Hafners in North Syracuse, just an awesome well run store!
Keeps my blood pressure down too ;D

Do you guys prune the sucker stems? I always have. I don't know how much it helps, but the fruits are always good.

If you have a slug problem cut the top off a soda jug and fill half way with beer. It will be full of slugs over night
I'll say it again.....CHEATER!That's harsh! Accurate, but harsh ;D
You ok now Dom?
Or just leave a mouthful of beer in your can or bottle and lay it on side in your garden as your weeding... ;)I don't weed :-*
I'll say it again.....CHEATER!You ok now Dom?
Hang in there Dom. I'm sure they'll mend the problem for you.X2 I'm sure they will take good care of you
Rg
That's a decent price for a 4'x225' roll. I think the stuff I use is 3x150 for $20. Don't buy the staple. Get a small roll of 10gauge galvanized wire. Suspended ceiling tie wire works well too. All you need is a pair of side cutters and you're in the staple business.
This year I'm experimenting with weed barrier and compost mulch on one side and no barrier or mulch on the other side.the only thing I've noticed so far is that the cukes on the mulched side are growing much faster than the other side. But it could be because they're partially shaded by my asparagus forest.
Rg
You've become a victim of PB greed Dom. They shut out your account. I'm learning Imgur. May not be able to transfer all my 4000 pictures, but......no way I'm paying $400 a year to those bandits.
I have a paid subscription until December I think. So I may have some time to transfer much of my library.
Rg
I haven't paid them anything..........ever.
And have not seen any of this.
Strange.
Do you use a mobile phone or tablet to interact with PB? I also have not had any issues, but I only use my mobile. *knocks on wood*
How's the weed guard/mulch experiment coming along?soesnt seem to be much difference at all other than the fabric covered side seems to retain moisture better. But then, it's in the shade of the asparagus forest so there's no conclusive evidence by comparison.
Very nice guys , with all the rain my garden is growing slow , hopefully I'll get some late season return
Nah...no rotten pumpkins here. The beetles had a banner year last season. Hot and dry..perfect conditions. That coupled with a moist spring and plenty of new grass roots to feed on, produced yet another good hatch. Prevention starts in a few weeks when the grubs start really feeding on the fall grass roots to fatten up for winter.
I'm pretty sure I've got a handle on what to do.
Rg
It's not really a problem in the kitchen. Just a bit warm this time of year. I had a fan going so not too bad really. Besides, I'm a clean as you go cook. I need the sinks, hot water etc.
I have to say, they sure look yummy.
Rg
Rg, those pickles look awesome!
boondox, WAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TOO BIG! What are you using?
They'll be really spicy. Need to sit for a few weeks to get happy.
Rg
They do sound good! I use to can hot cherry peppers in a horseradish brine, they came out real nice...
Rg, those pickles look awesome!

Imageur and copy paste to img brackets
boondox, if you go to "images", click on the pic you want to post. When it comes up look to the lower right, "Sizes", click on "Huge Thumbnail". After that click on copy on the "BBCode" area. The pic will post nice.
If you use "Album" each picture in the album you selected will have a arrow pointing down next to "copy". When thing drop down you can click on "edit image" and the resize thing shows up in the top right of the pic. Click on the left number, change it to 580 and then click on the number on the left, it will automatically change, this size seems to work well. click on 'Save" and then back to that down arrow and click on "share the image". Click on copy on the BBCode area and post the pic.
Hope this makes sense and helps. This is what I do and it seems to works for me...
Ran into my first major problem starting this blueberry farm. Started rehilling my new plants after the rains and decided to do the same to the ones I put in last year. A lot of them just weren't growing like they should and weren't throwing any new shoots. Moles are going up each row and around every plant. Don't know a permanent fix. Caught 3 out of the same hole with mouse traps
Toga I always do ..Seems to work good....
I just pruned off the non flowering branches on all my tomatoes.
RG
Do you buy them poisoned or do you have your own concoction. First time dealing with these buggers. Put peanut butter on the traps tonight. Got 3 without it. There's one that likes to bury the trap ill get him. Side note zucchini and peas are going crazy. Id post pics about my stuff if I knew how
Nice work, but aren't cage-free veggies happier and healthier for you to eat? ;D
Update on the mole invasion. As of this morning ive caught 15 in mouse traps in the same run
Can post link but not pic????
I dug out spots in the tunnel and placed them in
You have way too much free time on your hands. :D
I dug out spots in the tunnel and placed them in
So I decided that my lettuce and strawberries needed some shade. Got a roll of burlap from Lowes this morning.
Everyone looked very happy when I got home from work today.Rg
Wish I had your garden space to work with.
Rg
Rg, When you say a pickle plant is this a specific kind of cucumber which works better for pickling?
We have tried pickles a few times, but they have not come out well.
Thanks!
Looks yummy already DD!They are fantastic!
I'll be pickling tomorrow. Today I got the empty parts of the beds turned over and put in sugar snap peas, corvair spinach, some big leaf spinach and the first planting of radishes.
My Son is coming over later to pitch some shoes. There might just be a Heineken and pickle test as well ;D
Rg
Refrigerator or processed?Ok, so what I do is pretty simple. I use Mrs. Wages as my base, but don't follow it to a T. I use less of the seasoning and vinegar and more water. So if I do a full packet = 10 pounds I do 3/4 of the seasonings 7/8ths of the vinegar and an extra cup of water. Then I throw 2 tablespoons of our dehydrated pepper blend, crushed red is half as hot, so use 2x as much. Then each jar gets 2 tsp of agave, and 1 of sugar. It says process 10 mins, I do 8. They don't last long enough to get bad. When I'm harvesting fresh peppers, Hungarian and Japs, I slice a half cup and throw them in in place of the dehydrated ones. The fresh peppers go in the jar with the pickles, the "En Fuego" goes in the brine to disperse the heat evenly ;) I'm gonna play around with some fridge pickles next time.
Secret recipe please, please?

The garlic itself is fantastic though.
Final count......41 jars of pickles. I'm set for this winter's Sunday card games with my Son ;D
RG
Made my first set of refrigerator pickles today. Life delayed the garden from being planted by3 weeks.
3/4ths part white vinegar to 1 part water, sea salt and sugar for the brine.
Garlic, baby dill and dill seed for the average ordinary pickles, which included wedges and sliced pickle cukes.
The fun jars included crushed red pepper, mustard seed and banana pepper juice (trying for the first time)
RG, just one day in the fridge? I've always gone 3, and am curious to see how the spicy ones turned out. Wednesday can't come fast enough...
Just a taste test. They'll only get better.
;D
Rg
Man....those tacos look yummy.

I'm doing bullhead on the Weber again tonight. My Bride is at my Daughter's for a few days. She's not a fish fan.

I had a good harvest today...Nice Dom!
Chili sauce and more frozen peppers.... ;D

When my Daughter and her family lived in Las Vegas, she used to go for 3 months at a time.
Truth is, I miss her when she's gone. After 47 years together, you get used to having someone around.

I stopped over to Shane's yesterday, and he brought out some of Eddys (DD)s pickles and they were very tasty 👍🏻I heard you guys ate both Jars in one sitting lol :o Oneida works great for me as it's only 10 mins from my house lol. I say we shoot for early October, perch should be starting to school up by then and there's always a few Eyes around. Plenty of places to stay the night on the lake as well.
Eddy it would have been rude of me not to at least try them , snag made an entree out of them lollooks like another batch is in order for him then lol. I certainly have enough to spare ;D
Nice harvest Mookster. :thumbup_smilie:Thanks Dom! You interested in the get together?

Well, there's got to be one in every crowd, and nothing's ever easy. I am booked in Maine the first week of October, and the second weekend is my bride's birthday. I stink! :-[Sure, Let us know a date that works. I can look up local camp site's, or you can pitch a tent in my back yard.
Late September? ::)
Anyone have a recommendation for combatting tomato horn worms? They did a number in my tomatoes this week.
I read you should leave the ones with the white eggs/shoots completely nf out of them as they are a type of wasp that eats the worms. Anyone heard of this before or have other recommendations?
Thanks in advance!
Where on Oneida are you thinking of meeting/ gathering, DD? ;DWell, the north/east end is best for perch in the fall. Godfrey point has a nice free launch but no camping. There is Anglers Bay not far down the road, I'll look into primitive camping there but they have nice cabins. If anyone has knowledge of primitive camping site's in the area please chime in. I'm fine with the 23'rd.
Eddy needs to resize his cucumber picture, its to big.......... 8)Is it blowing up your screen? I let em go for slices this round. Maybe 2 more then she's done
I don't know about the rest, but, tell me where your boat is docked and I'll be there. I can't trailer that far with my little red truck.I'm betting on the east end at this point Bud, should be a nice easy trip down 90 for you ;)
Rg
I don't know about the rest, but, tell me where your boat is docked and I'll be there......X2
X2Looking forward to it! Did a little searching on the west end yesterday, found a few, but the east end is much better. There is also Verona beach state park
Nice mess! ;D
Is the launch there and is the park open that early? We can launch at Marion as well
Rg
Sunday the 24 th?I thought we'd been talking the 23rd. ???
Verona Beach State park?
I can be there by 6am ;D
Rg
I thought we'd been talking the 23rd. ???23rd is out for me, Big family wedding the 22nd and I plan to spend the 23rd recovering LOL
Looks like great weather Sunday. We can hit East Lake Bait and Tackle for bait assuming we're launching on the East end. Just need to know where and when to meet you DD.I can be at the launch by 7, Marion Manor unless there is a free one I don't know about ;D
Rg
Quote the harvest RG! With the forecast showing unseasonably mild temps this week, I am going to let the Portugal and habanero peppers stay where they are a few more days
the Portugal hot peppers are ripening nicely with these unseasonable high temps we are having in the capital district. The habanero peppers are coming along, some are now orange
I plan to make some piri piri hot sauce and pickle the Portugal peppers with jalapenos over the next few days
Question......
Any of you guys ever try freezing sauce or applesauce in a muffin pan and then vacuum sealing and storing the "sauce muffins"?
I ran across this technique on the Foodsaver website and thought I might give it a try on the next batch rather than canning it.
Rg
We always freeze our sauces (apple and tomato) in a rectangular cake pan. Once frozen, we pop it out of the pan onto the cutting board, cut it into squares, and then vacuum seal it. Flat squares stack better in the freezer. ;D
Looks good, Dom. I cranked a Victorio for years. Before that we used the old fashioned food mill with the wooden pestal. That was work! Now we use a kitchen- aide attachment. Works as well as the Victorio only seeds and skins out the end like a little turd, and sauce out the bottom. :D
What’s a zoodle? Zucchini noodles? Looks delicious!
Hey Bill, does the Kitchenaid food mill attach to the Grinder that I already have?Yes it does. Has a different, longer screw, but uses the same feed hopper.
Rg
Looks great O....
What's the canned pepper recipe? ::)
Cut peppers into flat pieces, pack them tightly into jars, wide mouth jars are easier to use. That sounds great O!
Add a clove of garlic or a couple of leaves of basil.
Add a jalapeño pepper or cherry hot, depending on how hot you want your peppers to be.
Bring 5 qts of apple cider vinegar and 5 qts water and 1 cup canning salt to a rapid boil.
Fill jars with rapidly boiling mixture and quickly seal the jar with new lids.
It is important that the mixture be boiling when putting into jars.
No need to "process"
Wait for jars to cool, check lids. If the are depressed you have a good seal. If not, empty and try again with boiling mixture.
Let them soak for about 10 weeks - we wait until Thanksgiving.
A bushel of peppers will use 2 gallons of vinegar and 2 gallons of water and yield 30 pint and a half jars.
They should be crisp to the bite. I will usually splash them with olive oil and a few sprinkles of dried oregano, but most of the time we eat them right out of the jar. Best served with pasta and meatballs, and of course with homemade sauce.
O, You would have had a 50/50 chance of being the canning champ since RG is the only one to bring something.. Wait till next year when I show up... I will bring some goddies...... ;D ;D ;DYou know, my pickled eggs and pickled garlic were pretty good that day. Out of a quart of eggs only three went home, and only half the jelly jar of garlic.
Sounds like a fun evening Bob. Was it to cloudy to see the Beaver Moon ?The bow hunters in MI posted some pictures of the beaver moon rise the other day. It looked more like sun rise. I am glad to see the beaver moon will not be around for the MI firearms season opener on the 15th
Was here..
.......... but it stinks when they don't survive the transition.
Rg
Toga, now that I have time, here's my method.
I always start my seeds in 6-packs like you'd buy plants in at the garden center. I use a good quality starter mix level to the top when dry. Then I thoroughly wet them in. Once the water has soaked through I add the seeds.
Using the eraser end of a pencil, I make a hole in the center of each pod about 1/2" deep. Using tweezers, I put at least 3 seeds in each hole and lightly tamp the starter mix around the hole to cover the seeds.
I put the 6-packs in trays, cover them with clear plastic, and put them under a light in a warm place. Don't touch them again until the sprouts touch the plastic.
Now the work begins with daily watering and temperature control.
Once the second leaves appear, I thin the plants. I leave the healthiest looking alone, and gently pull the others from each pod. Not being one to waste, I transplant the culled sprouts to new 6-packs. They usually survive and do quite well.
Theoretically, I triple my initial planting and end up with enough plants to fill in garden losses and give away to friends.
I move them into the outside green house around mid-April, once the night temps tend to stay above freezing. If it's a cold night, I heat the greenhouse with a 300w light bulb that we call the midnight sun.
I hope this helps, and good luck. ;D
With the thaw, I thought I'd take a look at the garden. To my surprise, the spinach is still very much green. Hard to believe with the severe cold we had earlier this winter. Now I'm wondering if it'll come back in the spring.
Rg, any tips on growing spinach? We have never been very successful in the past when we have tried.
I'm no expert for sure. I kind of fly by the seat of my pants.
Still haven't figured out how to grow radishes.
Rg
Anybody know what plant this is?

We call it the "Crazy Plant". It shoots out these 2' long spikes with tiny white flowers, but only during the winter.
I've not been able to positively identify it.
Rg
Donna also says it looks likes hens and chickens Bob.
This is one of the houses they use....

Squirrel hunting was always my favorite fall past time. Squirrel stew one of my favorites. I haven't hunted in years, so, now I trap them and take them for a ride to the park.

Thats been going in the snowblower every day.. >:( >:( >:(
To much snow for me.......a
Looks good Bob...
I have 2ft of snow in my yard.....
And im 1725 ft above sea level....
I like it, I'll add the sand for sure! The moisture control has pearlite in it, and I've had good luck with it in Lisa's potted garden, but I guess some more couldn't hurt! Lowes got it on sale yet?
I hope this helps, and good luck. ;D
Bet that sun has been feeling good Dom!
Wanna see my farmers tan?? 8) 8) 8) 8):o :o :o
Filling 6pk trays/flats. They go inside the machine empty and come out full..
Then there put on carts and put in the other houses to be planted next week...
I did almost 400 trays today and only need 800 more by next week...... ;D
Yes. ;D
Think I can paint some Lowes buckets black. We have seed potatoes....I have dirt.......I mean.....soil
What the heck.....I'll give it a go!

Potatos stink when they go bad...
Further research has lead me to methods of grafting a tomato plant to a potato plant and growing them both from the same plant in the same spot.
This I have to try!

I have heard of this...........french fries and ketchup :clapping:
Same to you and Lisa buddy....Lisa's getting over being sick, she'd drugging herself enough to make it through the day. Too bad you live so far away, you'd be more than welcome at our feast 8)
Its just me today. Mindy and my mom are sick and im avoiding everyone......
Wish it was sunny so i could go water plants in the greenhouses.... :-\
Same to you Eddie! You'd all be welcome here too. I've got enough food in the smoker to feed a small army, a whole brisket, a pork shoulder, and a pan of beans. Momma's making the tater salad, cole slaw, corn bread, and dog tick pie! ;DThat does sound good! We had a Prime Rib, Ham, Fresh Maple flavored Spaghetti Squash, Sweet Taters, green Bean Casserole, Shrimp Cocktail, Bacon Wrapped Scallops, Soppersata and Cheese Tray, and Ricotta Pie! :w00t:
Not as impressive but my daughter and in planted 8 6-packs today. Mainly hot peppers, some beans and some tomatoes. If I get 6 plants total out of them I will be impressed!
Hey Dom,
Do you know the rate of flow on your drip water nozzle?

Sharps ,Chicken manure should be composted for one year before it should be put on a garden... Just my opinion........
Its great for big plants but not good for producing fruit and vegetables.. Just my opinion...
Way to hot with lots of nitrogen... :-\
EMT corrodes. :-\
1/2" PVC and a heat gun, a man with a drill can build anything......... :D
Not really Bill. Emt is commonly used and approved by the NEC for exposed work in wet locations provided the fittings used are rain tight. I've installed miles of emt in outdoor applications. Cannot be buried underground though.
I think I'm going with PVC anyway. Emt would have to bolted together and I don't want to deal with sharp points when putting the plastic cover on the frame. Also, there are no Tee fittings for EMT and PVC will be lighter. Lighter is better. I'm buying automatic vent openers so I don't cook my plants. They'll lift up to 15 lbs so I should be able to get away with just one.
I gave thought to bending and gluing up wood hoops but it's just more than is necessary.

I didn't mean it would turn to rust, I was more referring to the white zinc oxide dust oxidation from the galvanize.
Beautiful! ;D
I'm easing into it Dom. I'd love to see greens in December, or January. It's got possibilities.

Thanks for the suggestions Boon, but I'm looking to heat the soil not the air, or possibly makes a heat platform to set the trays on. I ran across several designs that use incandescent rope light as a heat source. I can buy 24' for around $17 with my discount at Lowes. These were all used in a hot bed where the light string was mounted to foam board in channels and the trays set on top. An adjustable thermostat with a remote sensor runs about &12.
A 24' soil heating cable runs $50 or so with a thermostat that's built in line and not adjustable. I'm still comparing specs, wattage and $/ ft. You know me....I like to do my research.
Really I'd like to heat the soil and once sprouted in the plugs, transfer them to the soil to really get established prior to transplanting them.
Last night the temp in the bed went right down to ambient....23*. That ain't gonna work. Tonight I'm going to try covering the house with a tarp or something and see what happens.
Rg
Sharps, good time for spinach, lettuce, radishes, peas, beets and pansies in your flower beds... ;)
Sharps,
Just make sure they are legal in your state. I know in New Hampshire anything in the current family is a no go. Totally banned in my state.
The cold frame/trough planter is in full swing.

Rg That looks sweet Bob!
Only real differencei is the amount of perlite and sand. Buy the garden soil, a bale of Sphagnum Peat, bag of perlite and a bag of play sand and mix your own. Doesn't hurt to add blood and bone meal as well.
My beds get a generous layer of mulched leaves and grass clippings from the compost bin in the fall. Springtime I till that in along with composted cow manure, peat, sand, perlite and vermiculite.
Rg
My son has 10 bee hives. They looked like they made it through the winter with our early warm up. Then it got real cold. Now it looks like he last 8 of the 10. he lost all 10 the winter before this.
He had more bees ordered wanting to increase the number of hives so it looks like there is not going to be a big increase of hives.
BTW Raq you are missing the clomping and stomping. It is Tulip Time in Holland. For a change the tulips are in bloom instead of going out of bloom.
The fabric I used was StaGreen Premium landscape fabric. Best I've found. Lowes has it in various lengths. I found that using my mulched leaves on top was every bit as effective as bark mulch. In fact, it was easier to deal with at the end of the season. I removed the fabric and was able to just till the leaf mulch into the soil. I won't use any bark mulch on my vegetable gardens this year.
I think the fabric/mulch combinations are great for holding the moisture in the soil during the hot, dry months. It's easier to spot water and be effective. At least for me it is in a raised bed garden.
The beds without the mulch and fabric were more weed prone and required more water.

I caught one of my shop workers winding a cord around his arm one day and instructed him on the proper winding of an extension cord. A few days later I found him doing the same thing again. I asked if he understood what I told him and he said " what's the difference"
I fired him on the spot, telling him he was just too stupid to work for me. Seems harsh, but he really was too stupid to work for me.

Garden is in...three types of tomatoes ( most san monzano)... Red bell peppers..eggplant.. cucumbers...zucchini.. bush beans...peas and brussel sprouts..asparagus ( been picking for a few weeks) and fall planted garlic look great... herb garden is strong .. ornamental pond is thriving...love this time of year..
Awesome Roccus!boss lady puts up about 5 gallons of sauce a year... she makes stewed tomatoes with zucchini that is to die for!...I have strawberries in the herb garden but beating the chipmunks to them is a herculean task... no matter how many walk the plank ;D
I am growing over 80 different things in my garden and this will be the first year my little guy will be able to enjoy the harvest as well. I told my self i would only do 8 tomato plants this year from the normal 20. Somehow i ended up with 18 plants in 9 varieties. Looks like my strawberry's will be ready to pick in a week or less.

The chipmunks are the worst. Always disappointing to pick the perfect strawberry only to find a quarter of it has been nawed on... absolutely... last year they even ate the green ones...2 years ago they started climbing the peach tree eating the small peaches...only then did she give me permission to have them "walk the plank"..
Boy you all are so far ahead of me.
Fought the black flies last night just to get my electric fence up.
The deer aready ate the spinach and peas... :P
I'm after a chipmunk whose been burying sunflower seeds in all my gardens. 1 more red squirrel to get as well.peanutbuter on a cracker covered in sun flower seeds are an attraction no chipmunk can ignore.. but as you said you have to get the more aggressive red squirrel first...I hope your tomato-potato experiment pans out.. I've never tried grafting anything but trees.. love the concept!
Had to replace a couple more cuke seedlings this morning. But, I still have extras that are looking very healthy. Spread some diatomaceous earth in all the gardens yesterday and hit my Asiatic Lillies with Malthion to kill the Red Lilly Leaf Beetles. Don't know where they come from, but I get them every year.

I mentioned to my wife I'd have to get the live trap out, hate them near the house. Our little crazy killer female cat saw it and stalked it for 30 minutes, taking notes, and leaving it for future reference. We figured she have it by sundown tonight. Twenty minutes later our old, fat, overweight, laid back, male comes strutting up the drive with said chipmunk in tow. Didn't see that coming. Never underestimate an old guy.

I was installing the individual drip lines for each plant ( tomatoes, eggplants, peppers etc.) last night and a came face to face with a striped terror... yea I'm scared of snakes!... screamed like a little child!....I'd rather face down a gut shot grizzly than a 12" garter snake.. after my hissy fit ( my wife calls then SISSY fits) ( which had my wife laughing hysterically)I couldn't finish the job... maybe tonight...I'M BRINGING MY SHOTGUN!

Looks great Ed.I imagine it's not as much fun for you..... Oh Thanks Loser 8) Lisa says it's past time we visited ;)
I should have planted the rest of mine yesterday but went fishing instead. ::)
Raq. I was looking for a small tray of cherry tomatoes to plant yesterday. All I could find was 3 inch pots of single tomatoes as $3.50. I talked to the gal at a Meijer's that said that was all they got this year, no trays. I guess I will look else where as I am not paying that for one plant. I would rather plant smaller plants I figure they do not get shocked as bad as the bigger ones.
You still do they trays don't you?

Yeah? Not a fan for any particular reason?
I spent time on the road working for many years. 1 to 2 weeks at a time out of town got old very quickly. It paid the bills and then some, but it sucked!Wicked good intel bob, if this doesn't work out I will make it a point to go see you.
Hope your tractor gets repaired. Lady in our neighborhood bought a Cub Cadet from Tractor Supply. It's broke down more than it's working wish you lived closer. I can always get deals on returned tractors. Many people buy one and then decide to upgrade. Our store gives them full credit and than marks down the used one. Some times there's been some minor repair made to one we've already replaced and the repaired one gets a big markdown. My John Deere listed at $1599. I bought it for $700 with 12 hours on it and they threw in a $300 John Deere dump trailer that had a cracked corner for $50. I did some minor reinforcement to the corners and have been beating it up ever since.
Of course, I also got my 10% discount👍
Anyway, if you're in the market for a tractor, Lowes is always willing to deal on the used stuff they have.

My strawberries are done. Picked over 10 lbs of them this year including 2 lbs of pineapple strawberries. Time to replant the lettuce as well as the first batch is overgrown. My tomatoes are green but already golf ball sized or slightly bigger. Spinach all harvested and need replanting and radish as well. Lovage, parsley, onion, all being used and dried. Gooseberries will be harvested in 2-4 days. Cherries will be harvested tonight. Pears and peaches are the size of golf balls as well. Things are looking good. Thanks for the info on neem oil gentlemen. I will let the group know how I make out Monday. It's pricey, but hands down the best organic product on the market IMO.
Gonna try to get some of those walleyes that I keep reading about on the forum between storms tomorrow
Thats only 1/3rd of them... 8)
Anyone have any experience with gardens that are accidentally sprayed with herbicide?
I’m pretty sure it’s toast. I think it was R2D, and after a lawn treatment on a hot day the drift got our gardens. I will know more this afternoon once they confirm what was applied, and how much. If they used R2D for broadleaf weeds, I don’t think anything will be safe for Consumption. This really sucks...
My biggest concern is the dirt, and if any systemic based chemicals will persist into next year.
I guess this means we will have more time for fishing, but it’s frustrating. Fresh veggies from the garden cannot be beat.
The deer eat the blossoms on my hostas, but not the leaves. Must be flatland deer Fred :-\ ;DI think our 🦌 aren’t as fussy 😩 ,
Rg
Could you mean 2-4D herbicide?
Rg
Z the only thing you could have done is spray them with a lot of water as soon as you could... :-\
Give them a week and see what happens..
Not sure why your worried about the soil?
Sounds like its all surrounded by chemicals..... :(
It's always a guessing game. Better to err on the onservative side IMO.
Sorry for your misfortune.
Not to rub it in....but I had a ribeye on the Weber with a heaping helping of fresh steamd spinach for dnner. Not much I like better than fresh cut spinach.
Rg
Hmmmm. Add a cumbustion chamber and a spritz of ether, and you can launch them 5 neighbors down! :o
Killed my first batch of Japanese beetles this morning. I though I saw a few flying around at the park on my walk . Came home and found a dozen or so in my asparagus. Got out the Malthion! Don't know why they always go for the asparagus. I set up a trap, as an experiment, about 40 yards away and upwind of my garden. I'm gonna monitor how many it traps and how many still show up on my plants.
Rg
Won't do a darned thing if all my neighbors don't do applications as well. Waste of money.
Rg
I never did put up the trail cams, but it might be the same culprit who took a liking to my sugar snap peas...

The first step is deciding when exactly i will begin growing up
Enjoy my friend! Nothing much better then time spent in the gardens.Sure isn't. And you appreciate it that much more when you're away for a while....
Rg
I found another idea that seems to help also, but you have to have bored neighbor kids with chickens! They carried 4 of them around my raspberry bushes tonight until the chickens quit eating and I got rid of a few hundred beetles. Unfortunately, it hardly made a dent. Hopefully this will become a nightly ritual! I also put 4 beetle traps out today on the outskirts of my yard... can't hurt anything to try

Funny thing is this post has more pictures in it then the fishing sections j/k lol's .. guess will see all the pictures at the end of the year???
No one is afraid of “spot burning their garden”. We all know the deer, and everything else has already sized it up, and are just waiting for the right time to pounce.

Nice, Ed! :thumbup_smilie:Thanks Bud! You plan on coming down for a trip again?
Pulled the garlic just now. I always wondered if cutting off the scrapes was worth it. So I let the scales go on two heads. The ones on the right were allowed to grow a full scape. The heads on the left were cut off. The difference is dramatic...it's just like pinching suckers on a tomato plant...it allows the plant to apply all it's energy into the fruit ( bulb in this case)..nice haul of everything... I've harvested some everything so far except tomatoes... patiently waiting...

Keuka??? Canandaigua??? Sodus???Whats another Hour LOL And I'd prefer not to do Sodus, I've lost my taste for Ontario Perch. Honeoye? I'm ok with Oneida again, Have the boat at Charlies Marina witch has a campground for Bill its located on Johnson's Bay NW part of the lake. I've done a lot of fall perchin around there over the years. Or perhaps we could fish Yak's somewhere, my Boat isn't exactly Ideal for 3 grown Men. Just throwing around ideas. Port Ontario is a hoot in October for Sammins, and I've even met Dom there a time or 2 ;) If we do head your way Bob I'll prob. camp it out the night before with Bill.
Long drive for Bill.
Rg
Whats another Hour LOLTook the words right out of my mouth! LOL. If I don't stop at McD's in Fonda and wait 45 minutes after ordering before telling them to just give me my iced tea and they can keep the food, I'll never know the difference! ;D
Nice Bob...That sounds amazing...... :thumbup_smilie:
I took two big sweet onions and 8 cloves of garlic with lots of butter wrapped good in foil and cooked on the grill with some steaks last night.. Lovin every minute of it.....
Rains have been going all around us.. >:(I think you're in the line of fire today Raquette :o :w00t:
Watered last night..
My garden is water logged ,and it’s pouring , one extreme to anotherx2 ::)
My garden is water logged ,and it’s pouring , one extreme to anotherX3
My garden is taking off big time with the rain, only problem is the squash bugs really did a number on the zucchini, and started to get after the cukes as well so I had to spray.... Neem wasn't working on them for some reason. Oh well. Lisa and I are hosting Thanksgiving in July at her Parents house for all the relatives that can't make it in November 8) Looking forward to a great gathering and tons of great food! Tomorrow pickle production will take up a good portion of my day so I'd like to ask Dom for his Zucchini relish recipe and Bob for his Pickle one that he brought to the perch fishing excursion.... again ::) ;D I'll snap a few pics tomorrow.
Coming soon to a sandwich near... me!Man that thing is gnarly ;D

;D
I'll be canning tomorrow as well. I can't be sure of which batch I brought with me, but I'll put something up for you. Thanks Bob!
Rg
My son brought me a couple gallons of Worm Power to try on my gardens. Compost tea from worm castings. He says it worked miracles on the golf course and no chemicals. I've got a couple buckets of water sitting to dechlorinate. Chlorine in the tap water kills some of the microbial content.
Can't wait to douse some plants. I'm going to do a side by side with my clematis, carrots and snow peas.
Rg
Does anyone plant anything "exotic"? I was looking at kiwi trees but have not pulled the trigger.
Never heard of chloramine. A quick check scares me to death. Wonder if there's a filter for it? Maybe I'll just buy 5 gallons of spring waterOr bring a bucket to the lake. 8)
They always get you one way or the other.
Rg
If your zone 4 a hardy kiwi vine will grow fine. Look them up...
Ed this is the basic recipe we use except we double or triple it and add some hot peppers also and add the peppers to the shreaded zucchinie in the begining...Thanks Dom, Can't wait to try it!
Its a 2 day job. But worth it... ;D

Has anyone used slicing cucumbers for pickling? I didn't plant any pickling cucumbers but I'm over flowing with slicing cucumbers.
Not a pretty picture but this the contents of just one beer can slug trap just from last night......   :

Well, I made up 6 slug traps this morning. I'm trying the yeast, sugar, flour, water mix. Time will tell.My wife picked up a WHY attractant kit. There are two attractants in there. Do you put both in your plastic tube? ;D
Also made this year's yellow jacket trap.
(https://s8.postimg.cc/y7qs9p8pt/IMG_0690.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/y7qs9p8pt/)
Plastic fruit juice bottle with a plastic tube inside. In the tube is some felt and a packet of WHY attractant. Drilled some holes in the plastic tube. Cut some x shaped holes on the bottle and bent in the edges. Drilled some holes around the top to let the scent out. Put apple cider vinegar, water and a few drops of Dawn in the bottom.
Last year I just hung a piece of sponge with attractant in the bottle. Got a ton of the annoying little bugs.
I also bought a packaged trap by WHY last year. I threw it out. Mine works way better.
Rg
My wife picked up a WHY attractant kit. There are two attractants in there. Do you put both in your plastic tube? ;DIt's all the same stuff. Just use what you need of one or the other. Been pretty wet here. No yellow jackets out as yet. But, they'll come.

Nothing like good local honey! Garden is winding down now, pulled almost all my cuke vines, maters are fruiting but the blight is really taking it's toll on them. Gonna be down to Brussles ans peppers soon, and that's fine as our build is set to begin in a couple weeks. Can't wait to start the raised beds for next year.
Nice loser. You and Lisa have a busy fall ahead of you guys..Yup, gonna be a busy one for sure, but man are we looking forward to it!
My tomatoes are just coming on. Picked the first one today. I'm getting a 5 gallon bucket of cukes every third day. Beans are going strong. Picked a head of cabbage the other night and braised it with kielbasa and carrots. ;DWell I hope to show it off on the Perch&Pickle weekend!
It sounds like you're going to be busy, Ed! Good luck with the build. 8)
d**n the cardiologist.......full cheese ahead!
Eggplant lasagna. Instead of pasta layers, the layers are thin sliced, garlic floured, and fried eggplant with panko bread crumbs, tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmesan, and ricotta. Mmmmm! ;D
First batch of pepper jam in the books. Use jalapeños, Hungarian Wax and Portugal hot peppers this go round. The guys in the woods and on the ice prefer it hot, hot, hot so did not use any bell peppers.

I also do a perch lasagna with spinach and a very rich white sauce.
Rg
Hmmmm, perch + spinach lasagna, sounds awesome. Care to share your recipe Bob?

I had a very good jalapenos season and my wife just made the same thing. Delicious on a cracker, hard to stop eating it.
You won't have room in the basement for the little wood shop! :w00t:
Im such a slacker this year...
Inlaws are here and they said they never seen my garden look so bad..
Should have told them to go home...
You know the difference between inlaws and outlaws...
Yeah but im trying not to ruin my wifes inheritance.... ;D ;D ;D.
30 years this week........
I'll get the empty beds ready for radishes and greens.
Rg
That's it! I'm done pickling. Did anoer 4 quarts and 8 pints today of very...very....very dill pickles. This morning I pulled all the pickle plants. Found some seriously giant pickles hiding in the depths. A couple went a pound and a half at least. I have a lot of extra cukes that I'll take to work and give away. There's quite a few that are just too far gone to eat so, they'll go out by the compost bin. I'll probably have volunteer pickles next year, but that's cool.
I'll get the empty beds ready for radishes and greens.
Just a super pickle and cuke harvest this year.
Rg I'm envious my friend, my vines did horrible :'( None ever really established good roots for some reason. Oh well on to raised beds next year 8)
Every time I see the word “radishes”, or see a radish, I think of college.
Well, I didn't go to college. Hard knocks excepted....so what does radish mean to a collegiate?X2 ??? ???
Rg
Why are the jars upside down on the counter?

A fresh tomato is a happy tomato! ;D
:o :pinch: on both finds
Wood pallets work wonders pluss there usually free... ;)
I do that when i can dacker. I should have mentioned some of the targets for the protection include Arborvitaes and Lilacs. the latter were grown from samplings and i can no longer get away with pallets. I figured while i had the table saw going i would also make a few for the 7' Arborvitaes at the corner of the house, that i need to be careful of when i rake my roof.
No shrubs for me. One part of gardening I don't like much is trimming shrubs and hedges.
Rg
I hear you Bob.
I hate pruning shrubs.
It always seems like 2-3 weeks after doing it they are needing it again.
And the cleanup afterwards....
:-\
A few weeks back Donna and I pulled the shrubs from the garden in front of our home's front porch.
Long hard back breaking work to dig the roots on 2 of them.
I broke a tow strap using the SUV too.
Bought a larger one but still had to dig to China before the 2nd one gave up the fight.
Afterwards, we planted 6 hearty mums in there.
They look great and will never need pruning.
Next year the one on the other side of the front of the house gets a make over.
I'm thinking hosta!!!
;D
Those are "Hardy" mums.
Rg
You two have some strange resemblance.....except for the mustache.....and hair.
Rg
I have no words Mac.
Rg
Just on to another hobby know.. ;)Yeah, like firewood! Lol. ::)
I found a new pickle recipe that I'm going to try next year.
Whiskey Pickles!
It's pretty much the same recipe as for dill pickles but with the addition of 2 oz. of whiskey or bourbon per pint jar before packing the cukes.
I'm still on the fence whether it's a waste of good liquor or not, but I won't know until I give it a try. ;D
Screw that Bob
The copper and fermeldehyde in pressure treated adds a little flavor to your veggies and fruits.
;)
Nice starts Ed. Hope all is well with your Bride and the new house..Thanks Dom, It really is!
Use pine mine are 10 years old and just fine.. Wish i went 12" high to start with. But im hoping all of mine will be 20" tall this season... ;) Just cant bend over anymore.. :-\

Just ordered 4 of these potato bags .
(https://i.postimg.cc/BjZ80qm9/IMG-0812.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BjZ80qm9)
10 gallon with a flap to extract the spuds. 4 for $19. I'm gonna try those and a few plastic tubs if I can find some cheap.
Did some gardening yesterday afternoon. Turned over a bed that the voles had been living in all winter. Tunnels and holes everywhere. They ate all he carrots I tried to winter over. I did them in with traps and baits.
Pulled the plastic mesh and leaves off the garlic bed to find all of the cloves I planted (160 of them) sprouted. I fluffed up the leaves, put them back on the bed and put the plastic mesh over the top of it all to keep the squirrels from digging around in there. Spots in the other raised beds are still frozen.
The hot box is almost ready to go. I buried the rope lights in it yesterday. This morning it's 40 outside and 58 in the soil of the box. I need to add a couple cubic feet of soil the box and plan to plant it next week. Gonna start my pickles, cukes, tomatoes and peppers. I'll plant some spinach in there too . We love our spinach.
Sure was nice to play in the dirt.
Rg
Where did you find those potato bags? I’ve never seen them before.
I'll say it again....wish I lived closer.Me too..... But I'm a bit closer, and My Bride get's doted upon by the Dacker Family, so It's high time we made another visit ;D

Checked the asparagus this morning .....low and behold...the first sprout👍Made me go check, got one too! Did you pick any your second year?
Rg
John why would you ruin perfectly good compost by adding chemical fertilizers to it?I'm always willing to try something new... I'll skip the 10-10-10 and try perlite and see what happens
There's not a plant on earth that uses
10-10-10 fertilizers.
10% nitrogen
10% phosphorus
10% potassium
All you need is organic compost and some perlite...
By a couple bags...
Looks nice Dom. My Bleeding heart is blossoming along with the tulips and daffodils. On a great note, I harvested a nice pile of fat radishes from the hot box. Also transplanted the zucchini plant to the garden. You already harvested radish? I'm super Jelly as the Kid's say these days ;D

Hey, what would you recommend for a good ground cover vining plant? Partial shade. 2-4 hours of morning sun.
I want to train something for a boarder around a planting in my front yard.
Bob
Perennial or annual?
Vinca vine is a good annual. Would have to check on perennials..
Bob it's hard to believe the growing season is so different from there to here. 145 miles.. But I'm 1274 feet above sea level.. :P.It's huge the difference between here and "town". Everything's in full bloom in the valley and just getting started up here. The airport in town is 662 ft., our house sits on the 1600 ft. contour just 5 miles away.
Nice Bob. Wheres the pictures? :-\
Other than the image of you streaking every thing looks great Bob....Lol , he got me last week pretty bad 😜
No wonder you use to run at three am....
;D ;D ;D
Yes I have made them and they work well..Wrapping in chicken wire works also.....
I'm hoping to make a run to the waste management recycling center this week and get a couple loads of there's. I'm raising as many of my beds as I can another 10"

I have always been afraid to use free town mulch in my raised beds. I guess I could spend the time sifting through it, given i have experience a great deal of debris in it. I just go to old reliable, back in the woods to fill my raised beds
This is not ground mulch. It's real compost. Has to composted for two years and gets tested before they sell it. Its 15$ for a bucket load...
Tractor bucket. Iike 2 to 3 cubic yards. Fills up a pickup pretty good......
I like them! Same layout as mine.thou wereth mine insperation

Glad I don't have any pepper or tomato plants out in the garden yet with the temp in the 30's this morning... :-\
I have been well behind, not even close to ready. Latest I've ever tried to plant. No frost warning here but was a good chilly night last night.I'd say send it, you won't regret it. I finally did a couple this year and I'm telling you what, I should have don't years ago.
Was up wondering if i should still go through with the 3 raised beds or go to the local farmers market frequently and often.
I'd say send it, you won't regret it. I finally did a couple this year and I'm telling you what, I should have don't years ago.
I think the deciding factor missing the opportunity to watch my princess eating veggies straight out of the garden. she loves her fresh cherry tomatoes and string beansthrow em in potters ;)
With this cold weather they are looking for food
I'm thinking about starting some Brussels sprouts in containers or transplant into the garlic bed after harvest.no, you let them go till the snows flying to sweeten them up ;)
Think it's too late? I've never grown them before.
Rg
no, you let them go till the snows flying to sweeten them up ;)

(https://i.postimg.cc/v4N2RdQh/IMG-2726.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/v4N2RdQh)
Got a small stainless steel cup from goodwill. Drilled a hole. Put a hook in and out and hung the hummingbird feeder from it. Fill the cup with water d no more ants. They can't swim.
I won't take credit for the solution. Saw it on YouTube.
Problem solved!
Rg
This is the worst my garden has ever been. Oh wait, what garden ? I have nothing planted yet except one box I planted salad greens in. :(man I’m jealous.... not of your non existent garden, the dead show ;)
The collar bone is clicking again and when I go for xrays tomorrow morning I don't think its going to be good..... :'(
But no matter what me and my not hippie bride are headed to Saratoga for the day and a Dead and Company show at SPAC..... ;D
Changed gears a little on the sprouts. I cleared some radishes from the trough planter and set some seed in an egg carton to get them started. The seeds I started in damp paper towel grew so fast I don't think they would have survived a re- plant.oh man the radishes look amazing! I'm building one as soon as I find you're blue prints ;)
Good news is, I harvested my best radishes yet .
(https://i.postimg.cc/Mcm9PM69/IMG-2745.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/Mcm9PM69)

(https://i.postimg.cc/F1RTpH2x/IMG-2746.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/F1RTpH2x)
Love my trough planter for so many reasons. Every gardener, except those with endless greenhouses at their disposal (DOM) should have one. I can start plants early and transplant without having to mess with hardening them off. Grow early and really late crops of greens and veggies with no worry about frost. Grow covered crops in the summer with no concern about insects or desease.
Nice!
Rg
oh man the radishes look amazing! I'm building one as soon as I find you're blue prints ;)
Well, after telling myself no more major projects after I gutted and rebuilt a new kitchen, I gutted my garden last fall because it was getting ratty. This spring I said "What was I thinking?" so I began a rebuild with time and my aging body against me sacrificing nights and several "fishing weekends" but somehow I actually got it done in time to plant some vegetables. New beds, new soil, new fence with gate, what seemed like tons of stone- very demanding but in the end it looks like we'll have some veggies this year. OK, no more major projects for this guy. Nice neat garden(https://i.postimg.cc/BXC7BGDF/20190621-202905.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/BXC7BGDF)

Rg
Looks really great Ed. Nice work!Elite Bob, and thanks!
I've been picking cukes and pickles for the last week. Tomatoes are coming along. Hot peppers are starting to really produce.taters are still going strong and the garlic isn't ready just yet.
What variety of zucchini did you plant? Leaves look totally different from mine.
Rg
Looks awesome Ed and happy belated birthday bro..Thanks man!
Did some research and it seems that the zucchini flowers man not be pollinated completely. So this morning I got out the little paint brush and helped a couple fresh blossoms along. I find it hard to believe that there's not enough pollinators around. I have a plethora of wild flowers around the garden.
Maybe I'm defeating my own purpose by planting so many flowers. Maybe the pollinators prefer the wild flowers to my zucchini. I don't know, but we really like the flowers.
Rg
Sorry Dots happy belatedThanks Fred!
I am just about ready to pull my zucchini plants as they are all done fruiting. Time for round 2. Same with lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, snap peas, potatoes, carrots, beats and cabbage.Yikes... my zuchininni and squash JUST STARTED producing.. lol
Wife has been busy cutting and drying , dill , sage , thyme , rosemary, chives , parsley , basil , oregano, , nothing like fresh herbs , guys your produce looks great , 👍thanks Fred 8)

Rg
Did a little reading on the Armenian cucumber. It's more closely related to a musk melon than a cuke. What do they taste like? Cuke or melon or something in between?
I'm thinking they'd make some really good pickles. Definitely on my list for next year.
Rg
Very creative! How did you cook the Zoodles with Boursin?just folded it in off the heat after sauteing with garlic and xvoo.
We love our Zoodles. Did chicken Parmesan with Zoodles in parchment paper on the Weber the other night.
Rg
Only you Edd would come up with a strange veggie lol 😉LOL ;D
Those have got to be cumatoes. Tomaumber to hard to say. ;Dlol I'm stumped
Curious fruit there Ed. What's it look like inside?Interesting that your tomatoes arent doing well.. my cherry tomatoes are absolutely UNBELIEVABLE this year..
I pulled a couple oversized pickles yesterday. Don't like them for Pickling, but they make great table fare. Next year it's nothing but garden bush pickles and maybe one or two slicers.
My poor tomatoes aren't doing well at all. The brown leaf spot fungus has all but wiped them out. I didn't get it in time. There's still fruit on most that may ripen ok, but, not good at all. I'm going to have to do some serious treatments after I pull them and watch more closely in the spring. Makes me wish I had Don's Greenhouses at my disposal.

Those are lemon cucumbers, I've been growing those since I was little. They are more tender than regular cucumbers. When I pick them I wipe my hand on them to get the little black coffe grounds looking things on the outside off and eat them like an apple.
Here's a link. https://bonnieplants.com/product/lemon-cucumber/
Ed what else did you have planted by them?pickles and tomatos Dom, I'm gonna have to pay attention to that vine. Might be a seed got mixed in ....
Cross pollination usually happens in the seeds the next year.. There are types of round cucumbers...
Ok that's what I was going to suggest but if he didn't plant the seeds or plants where did they come from?
Once you get to 5 or so it'll track correctly......I think.
Welcome to the gardens community anyway. You may be on to something with the mixed up seeds. I've always bought my seed from Lowes. I think that's going to change next year. I'll be buying certified seed from quality companies. I put too much effort into growing my gardens. E stuff we get from the displays in the big box stores could be years old.
Rg
Thanks for the advice , and welcome!
Thanks for the welcome. I don't post very often, I just started coming to this site this spring. I have posted on Iceshantie and made the jump to over here.
Welcome Ron.. Let's see your garden.. : ;D
What a super, day for outside projects. Did lots of gardening today. Transplanted once flowers from a garden in the front to the back gardens. Filled in with some mums. Trimmed, pruned and generally puttered around the gardens most of the morning.I'm beginning to see blight, gonna go get some copper fungiside tomorrow and try and combat it while I can. Luckily I had a while to ripen before it came. Peppers are really starting to crank here as well, peas and beans are winding down, everytime I think of pulling and re-planting they flower again. Cukes and pickles daily, Zuchinni too. Brussles are tiny, starting to get a bit worried.
Planted another crop of radishes in the trough planter. Pulled the dill weed to dry and filled the bed with compost.
Even though my tomatoes look miserable, we had BLT's with Mr. Stripys from the garden and they were delicious.
Past the middle of the growing season now. First crops are winding down. Time to plant some spinach and lettuce.
On a very positive note, my peppers, Anaheim, Red Chili, Cowhorn, Jalapeño and Hot Banana, are doing really well.
Not our best year, but, that's gardening.
Rg
Ed are you sure its blight?I'll snap a pic later....
You will get leaf rot from inconsistent watering also.
Pull the infected leafs off and throw them away in the garbage not your compost..
Not blight.......Oh, sweet! They are awesome, come get some I'll make a batch of brownies ta-boot 8)
Pickles look awesome....
Raided my garden this morning.
Nice pile of pickles and peppers.

Plus a couple jars of experimental pickled peppers done with my favorite pickle recipe.
Should have worn gloves. My hands are burning still.
Rg
No, and I used caution while relieving myself. To be perfectly honest, I have arthritis in my hands and right now they feel pretty good.
Rg
Nice harvest Ed.thanks Bob, its so rewarding
Rg
Nice bushel of groceries there Ed.I'm not sure I remember how to fish.... 21 days in a row with out a day off. Pay checks sure are nice and all but :o.
I should be making pickles today but I'm gonna mow for a few hours and fish this afternoon...
Yeah we make two batches and one is pretty hot... ;D
Nice....That's all there is to it? What kind do you grow?
Ed get a shovel handle mark 6" and punch a bunch of holes in rows 6" apart.... ;D

That looks good
Anyone have a method of drying hot peppers without oven or dehydrator? That would be tough with the humidity, even with the dehydrator, if you don't deal with them right off the bat, they get soggy again.
I was thinking of stringing them and hanging them in the garage.
Rg
I'm surprised you don't have a de-hydrator Bob. Nice pull, mine are loaded too.I've been watching at Goodwill for one Ed. I don't dry a lot of stuff. Herbs dry quite nicely in paper bags hung in the basement. Garlic sets up in the garage ( just brought that inside today). Gave some thought to building one ( I know I can do that), but it's one more thing hanging around waiting to be used.

One usefull tool for sure.
I've got faith in Dom. If he says hanging them to dry over my dehumidifier will work....I'll go for it. If it doesn't, I'm taking a road trip to raid his freezer😁.

Looks delish Dom.X2 🍽

🤢🤢🤢 not my flavor fav.really, as I get older I find I like them more and more. They came out pretty good, just did a simple old world brine of Cider Vinegar, Brown sugar, and water.
Rg
Took your advice Ed and Scored a dehydrator at Goodwill today.Tough to beat that price Bob! We really enjoy our Hot pepper blend. Used some in a Venison and shrimp stir fry Friday night with the niece and nephew.

I'll be drying herbs and hot peppers tomorrow. Might take a shot at apples at some point.

Those look very tasty! Big weather change coming. Time to get some outdoor stuff put away.
Rg
Yes. We use to do it by hand way back in the day..That is a pretty cool machine. Wish we had a small place for a raised bed.

I've already been through the garden with the tiller 3 times in last 2 weeks will continue to til once or twice a week til planting time
Worst thing for your soil is to till or step in it.. Just saying..
What variety are the container tomatoes Dom? I'm looking for a determinate variety that works in containers.
Bob
ok heres a question ,i can grow tomatoes in my pocket but for the life of me cant get sweet potatoes to grow anyone got a good system ,accually me and wifes favorite root veggie im guessig RAQ or RG may have advice ,i have a lumber mill and can cut for raised bed if thats better just not sure
thx for help
I wonder if this Corona Virus will effect nurseries to shut down. i'm going to start quit a few seeds just in case. And for parents that have kids home from school, this would be a fun project for them. Even if you don't garden, leave them for a neighbor that does.
Its never too late to start seedlings. Covering them too tightly, keeping them too warm and using grow lamps too far away from the seedlings will produce tall skinny plants. Not good.
Sprout your seeds before planting in the starter pods. Keep them moist but never wet. Allow for good drainage. Keep the lights as close as possible and on a timer . I used 12 hrs on/off. When they grow the first true leaves, think about starting the Hardening off process. If at all possible move them outside in a protected spot for a couple hours a day. This can be tedious if you have a lot of starts.
It grows a more robust plant.
Before I built my Trough Planter, I used a 4 lamp 2x4' trouffer fixture with 5000k lamps. It worked very well and produced good seedlings. I would still lose some to hardening off and transplant shock. But, I always had enough.
Now I start my seeds in peat pots in the planter. There's no hardening off as the are raised outside . I plant fewer and lose fewer..
Don't overlook direct sowing when the soil is above 50 degrees. Might end up being more productive and less Shock to the seedlings.
I'm by no means any kind of expert, but Dom is and hopefully he'll chime in.
Rg
Bob,
You should build those trough planters and sell them. I bet you could move quite a few just from this site alone.
I’d be interested.
Theres nothing worse than a hobby becoming a job. Believe me I know.. ;D ;D ;DRaq,
Looking good guys.. :thumbup_smilie: :thumbup_smilie:
Mine was covered with snow again this morning. :-\
Here is an arial from about 10 years ago.Raq , is this your home ? It's amazing
The end greenhouse with the three black dots is now twice as long.. This was taken in the fall and you can still see a lot of mums out in the mum field...

Raq , is this your home ? It's amazing
I had my first garden asparagus today. Shallots have been making their way into several meals as well. Strawberries are just starting to flower, snow/snap peas are starting to grab hold of the trellis. Peach, plum and cherry trees are blossoming big-time. Apples and pears are opening up but blossoms are still awhile away. Lots of stuff under the lamps waiting for me to recoup from a pair of Walleye all-nighters to go in the ground. Walleye fishing & Fruit/vegetable gardening, my #1 and 2 hobbies/passions. If I make it to retirement I won't be bored.
Raq,
Coming along nicely! Maybe some fried green tomatoes are on the near horizon!!
I like my green tomatoes pickled.. ;)Good Choice!!

Did you plant yourshallots last fall? I was thinking about adding some to my herb plot.
I've got seeds germinating for a variety of stuff. Pickles, cukes, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, tomatoes, cardinal Climbers and peppers.
I'll move them to the trough planter in little peat pots in a few days. Then in a couple weeks ....maybe 3, I'll transplant them to the gardens.
We have a freeze warning tonight and tomorrow night. Maybe even snow showers romorrow morning.
Rg
Got the chives today Dom! Thanks Loser 8)
Probably that last series of night time freezes. It killed some of my early asparagus and damaged the Bleeding Heart . But both seem to be coming back OK.
After all that gardening and a wee dram of bourbon, I crashed out on the couch about 7:00 last night. Woke up at 11 and went to bed. Now it's 3:22 am and I'm wide awake. :-\
Forgot to mention that when I was at Lowes yesterday, there wasn't a veritable plant in sight. All sold out. Never seen that happen in the 10 years I've been shopping there. Glad I buy seed and start my own.

Ok guys I’ve never seen 1 of these , is this a hummingbird moth , it was in my lilacYep, I have only ever seen 1 in my whole life...it was about 3-4 years ago by the impatients near the pond. I had to ask on another forum what it was. Let us take about 30 pictures of it. All of a sudden our resident bullfrog lunged at it and just missed. I thought the wife would have a heart attack..and then it flew off and we haven’t seen another since...when we were planting flowers last week we actually talked about it. Beautiful creatures!!

Bart, sounds like you have to get an electric fence or break out the .22makes great dog food....
Bob,my asparagus patch gets filled with japanese beetles every year after I quit picking them. They don't seem to harm the plants and they don't bother my other plants so I just leave them be.
What are these beetles in my asparagus?? And how do I destroy them??
I know 2 kinds of beetles that attack asparagus shoots. One has a metallic blue head and the other is kind of reddish with black spots. Malathion will do the trick. Don't harvest for a few days after spraying. Doesn't take much. Maybe a tablespoon in a gallon of water. You can try Neem oil first if you like, but I doubt it will rid you of them. Thanks! I’ll give it a shot!! Seems to be a lot of nuisance critters this year...beetles in asparagus, carpenter bees around the shed, raccoons in the trash..where does it end??
Japanese beetles love the mature asparagus tops. I murder every one I see. Last year they migrated to my potato plants and ate the hell out of them in just a day. Malathion works on the adults very nicely. I mix a weak batch in a gallon jug and use a spray bottle to squirt the buggers right in the face.
I put 3 Bag A Bug traps to the west of my garden last year and filled 6 of the bags with them. I drown them in a bucket of water and off to the dump they go. I'd treat the yard for them , but my neighbors don't so it's a waste of money. The traps controlled the majority of them. Pretty amazing how well they work.
Biggest problem I have around here is slugs. I put down diatomaceous earth but it doesn't last. Gotta get another bag of slug pellets.
Tomatoe plants I bought are really taking off. I'll be transplanting the pickles, cukes, herbs, Brussels sprouts and broccoli on Saturday when the weather is a bit cooler.
Fresh asparagus for dinner again last night.
Rg
I've gotta move my starts from the ttrough planter to the garden....TODAY ....after I go fishing.I would plant today as well but with my luck the weather man would be right and we'd get flash floods and Hail lol 🙄

Since I had the time and some extra bucks I didn’t spend going to LA and Seattle to visit kids, I made my Covid garden. I had the posts put in for me but everything else my eldest son and I did. The best part about the entire month long project was getting to work with my son. He’s working from home and has the time to stop bye and help.
All the wood is either rough cut hemlock or larch from a PA sawmill. We also had to mail order a galvanized coated wire mesh that is 4’ high and buried 6” deep for the critters. We are now planting various roses and shrubs around the perimeter. We also plan on an archway type arbor at the entranceway. I also planned ahead. The paths are 3’ wide for my future wheel chair ::)
That Sir, is a thing of beauty! 😍😍😍
Yeah, I will never be able to post a picture of mine ever again............. 8)Mine pales in comparison as well ....
Thanks for the compliments. Seamonkey, blackberries that I grew once were spindly and spread too much. I don’t know how that would work in a raised bed along a driveways. Have you considered blueberries? I’m sure they would be easier to maintain and they grow well in your area.I do have a few blueberry I just started, two bare root that I put into the one small patch of dirt I have, though I didn’t test the ph so fingers crossed. I also got one dwarf blueberry Bush and a dwarf raspberry that I’m going to grow in a container. The blackberries I’m getting are a thornless, erect cane variety, so they should stand up on their own without putting up supports. But I can build those in too.
Wow, you area berrymaniac ;D. I have a U Pick around the corner from me that is very good and cheap. Seems that squirrels and birds got most of the berries and fruit I grow. Everything has to be caged and netted.Yea the cage was part of my plan, we tried growing strawberries a couple years ago and it didn’t work out. Yes I’m a bit focused on berries. my favorite mead recipe is a blend of Strawberry, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, and black currant. I’m not allowed to grow currants in Maine, or I would be trying that too.

60 tomatoes! Holy moly you'll have enough for years if yo can them all ,I used to do alot ,12 now gives me all sauce and juice I need for a year! Nice beds though!!Yeah we have issues for sure, 2 of them are italians or pears for sauce, 2 are beefsteaks and another large breed, the last one has eaters and some cherry tomatoes. We put down A lot of sauce, tomatoes, salsa and Deb makes awesome chili sauce too. We also are going to have some for Deb's sister in law, she does 150 jars A year.
Containers out of weed mat material is the way to go. Plastic suffocates roots. Atheist drill alotLike make a basket out of the coco fiber carpets?
Of holes.
Every one's gardens look great...
Mine is starting to come along. One more bed to fill with fall squash and fill in the room I have for extra hot and green peppers.. Got the electric fence up and going. There's a big doe with a fawn in the field and I don't want her to teach the youngan any bad habits.
Dont know what happened to the rhubarb, grew good but hasn't turned red...

Don't worry Bob. They will all be going on automatic dripper lines.. ;)
And this is only the beginning of them.....
Wow, a whole field of mums. so you breed or grow plants out to send to stores and garden centers?
I didn't get any pictures because my phone went dead but two young amish girls planted all 2500 mums in 4 1/2 hours..Holy crap that’s some fast workers ;D
Theres another shipment coming monday and 1500 coming on Thursday...
Will get pictures in the morning..
I had 80 mph winds come through in a thunderstorm yesterday and snapped off some limbs of my tomato plants. :'(Wow those are some strong winds.
To show you how strong the wind was this is a homemade steel flagpole.

Anyone have a recommendation of a non-toxic pesticide? I have multiple problems in my garden. Slug chomped on my broccoli and my pepper plants have several holes in them. My zucchini plants just came up and they are full of holes and dying. I'm in danger of losing almost everything.
Indeterminate tomatoes..... I prune off the suckers. That's about all. Others do way more with success.
Rg
Does anyone do soil testing themselves? I got a soil test kit that was a piece of junk obviously made in China, so spent more for a much better LaMotte test.I’ve wondered if those kits are any good, even the ones we sell and use for fish tanks are just ball parking it, lab grade test kit for saltwater fish tanks are like $50 for each kind of test (ph, calcium, carbonate, magnesium, etc.)
I'm kind of geek tester that likes to test the swim spa, my ponds, and now the gardens.
Im done. No room left for anything.
Be picking my first tomato tomorrow got 4 good ones ready... ;D

man im jealous that garden makes mine look sick all i do is feed the rabbits with my pepper plants.Im three weeks from a tomato.Pumpkins havent even floweredTry grating up a couple bars of irish spring soap and put it around the plants/garden. Believe it or not, it really works
My Brussels sprouts bolted and blossomed. I should have known better. Too early and warm for them. I'll plant more in the beds after I pull the spinach in a couple weeks.
Broccoli seems ok though.
Rg
I'd think a shallow well jet pump would do what you need it to. You could use a basket type floating intake to avoid any debris from the pond. Run black plastic pipe to hose bibs at your gardens. Probably in the $2-300 range from a farm supply..
I have the opposite problem. My hoses are commercial grade, black and exposed to the sun fate 10:30 am or so. Measured the water temp coming out of my 100' hose at 125 degrees yesterday afternoon. So...I let it run a while.
Rg
That's just the garden hoses I haul around. I buried black plastic pipe to my back garden for supply. Everything gets watered by hand with hoses.
Diatomaceous earth will help a lot. Completely harmless to humans ( unless you snort a big nose full) . Crawling insects will not cross it. Cheap and very effective.
Rg
SM ya just have to eat it slow and not all at once.... ;D
Such a small “crop” but this will hopefully soon be my first yellow raspberry, can’t wait to try it. It’s the berries off the one year cane I bought at a nursery, it was already blooming when I got it, and has now sprouted 4-5 new canes in the pot.

Anybody have any recommendations for a electric pump to pull surface pond water to sprinkler feed a garden? I'm using well water via a garden hose, but it's really cold and seems to shock the plants even in the early morning or late evening. I have used a sump pumps in a five gallon bucket to move water, but they don't have PSI needed for a sprinkler or garden hose nozzle. (30 psi minimum is needed and yes I've tried a sump pump). I have four ponds on the property so there isn't a lack of warm water.A garden pond pump should work. A lot of them have standard garden hose fittings on them already. The mag drive pumps last forever, much better than the older o-ring sealed pumps.
Two gardens but neither is terrible big so pump does not have to be large. Electric power acmes is not an issue. I could easily bury PVC below the surface of the ground.
Thanks!

So far neem oil has shown some results with the bugs. Haven't noticed any new holes or found very many slugs. Haven't found a squash bug either but I just replanted my cucumbers and zucchini so it's too early to tell with them.
Garden is starting to take off.
Been watering every morning before the sun up
By hand. Been seeing way better growth from the plants withe the early watering
I was originally watering the tomatoes at night
And the bottom leaves were getting molding
Removed all the mold areas and all new fresh growth with the morning watering.

Corn and Zucchini are two things I don't grow. There's a farm market near me that grows the absolute best sweet corn and we only have it 3 or 4 times a summer. Their strawberries and peaches are also the finest around. They have a huge operation and employ a couple dozen high school kids every summer. A nice family owned business that's been around for as long as I can remember. Zucchini is everywhere almost for free.
I have a dozen tomato plants that were planted over about 6 weeks. Should stagger the harvest nicely. The last to be planted were 4 SAN Marzano sauce tomatoes. I'm hoping to make some nice sauce and salsa this fall. Fortunately, no signs of the blight that wiped out my tomato crop last year.
As far as the cost of a garden is concerned....home grown vegetables are priceless!

Cost effective, Prob not but depends on how much you can grow, and especially if you start from seeds yourself. I’m new to this gardening myself, but use to growing things like corals, aquarium plants, and use to have a nice closet grow going. Now that was more cost effective seeing how expensive corals and the closet greens were lol.hahahaha closet greens!!
Indeterminate tomatoes..... I prune off the suckers. That's about all. Others do way more with success.
Rg
And it looks like some of your zip ties are a little tight..... ;)
I like to use bailer twine tied loose....
Thanks! I put them on backwards so I can adjust them
Ha.. Didnt notice that.. Good Idea.. ;D
I used to be way more aggressive with pruning. Now I just pinch off the little suckers that sprout at the base of the main leaf stems.
Anyway....here's where I am at this point.
Potatoes are crazy.

The cukes and tomatoes in the bags are doing just fine.
That’s a sharp looking garden!
Actually those are potato bags. There's a trap door on the side where you supposedly can remove some potatoes while tha plant is still growing. There's drain holes in the bottom. Didn't produce potatoes well but the tomatoes and cukes seem to like them just fine. Got them really cheap on eBay. They'll hold about 7 gallons of soil. I didn't fill them that much...maybe 4 gallons.
Anyway, 2 or 5 gallon buckets would work just as well. A couple years back I planted a bunch of excess pickle starts in some 1 gallon buckets I picked up at the local recycling plant for $.10 each and they did very well. Watering is kind of fussy though. Easy to over or under water a container I think.
Garden looks great Bart. Lowjack...the ONLY thing I don't see in your gardens is a bee house. Very nice!

Thanks Raq.they been getting special care this year didn't have a good crop last year they have some serious unbelievable fertilizer I love to tell you what it is but some people might get madGet mad about what your using or mad that your spilling the secret? What are you using virgin blood or something?!? Lol. If I had an actual yard and garden, I’d be putting in a bunch of invasive fish I catch lol.

I'll show you the fertilizer it was an 18-minute fight it died at below 20 temperature hands were made 60 runs at a hundred + feet cuz that's where my spool Tangled Up every finger my hand was so cold and I wasn't giving in by the time it came up I had to lay in the snow and there's no way I was going to throw back down the hole without a picture with in like a minute it was bleeding out the sides of its body from stress so I brought home came walking out of 30 inches of powder what's going to get it mounted my Taxidermy Northeast Taxidermy no longer does skin mounts they've done a very few nice ones for me so getting a replica wish the fish could have went back down the hole it would have been dead no one would have ever saw it now it's underneath all my eggplantsVery nice! Yea those would be used as fertilizer here too, like I said about invasive species lol.

Your a funny man...Ive read they will be ok if kept in a sheltered but unheated area like a garage or shed. I’m going to stick them in the bulkhead to my basement. There are people with more mature plants in 25gal and bigger grow bags/tubs and they just wrap with some plastic and stick close to house to shield from wind or freezing rain. The ground does indeed freeze deep here too, so freezing roots isn’t the issue as much as being exposed without mulch/snow cover.
::) ::) ::)
Seamonkey just curious what you are going to do with these potted plants come winter? I know you are going to bring in the peppers which is good. But look up what to do as far as watering and the amount of light.
And the other ones , unless you have a plan I don't know about, the roots are just going to freeze. They need a cooling period but not frozen roots. Just saying...
Never saw this before. Went to walk out my basement door and saw a chipmunk right outside scurrying around so i ran to get the bb gun. Should have gotten my phone. There were 3 slugs on the ground. It checked them all out and went back and picked one up and started eating it like an icecream cone... :o :o
By time i put the gun down and ran and got my phone it ate the whole thing... :o :o :o
You can see the white ring left on the ground in front of it....
And you can see a slug it passed up in the other picture..

Stupid question since I am new to gardening. The ground doesn't get too hot under the black plastic? Also seems like a lack of cultivating would be a negative. But apparently not. How do you get water to the plants?

holy cow fred i have a few almost ready>>>nothing like that though
Great observation. It’s actually landscaping cloth, which is porous so there’s no issue when watering.
I never gave much thought as to whether there is an issue with the temperature of the soil. But I have very little issues with weeds in the beds, which is a huge plus.
Sitting out under the umbrella this evening having a cocktail with my Bride and watching the havahart trap I set for the squirrels that have been digging holes all over my gardens. Watched one pull the stick with peanut butter and sunflower seedsout of the trap and lick it clean.
It...I assume he from its coloring....poked around, checked it out and finally ventured into the trap. Watched it all as it...he....she....was imprisoned ( politically correct account there🙄🙄🙄)
Anyway, since I already had a couple of cocktails, my Bride drove the convicted offender and I to the park to effect its....his.....her...release into new habitat.

I’m not one to point fingers, but I blame COVID for the green tomatoes....
Thanks All. It is great. The sounds reminds us of a campsite we stayed at during a canoe trip on the Bog River and Lowes Lake years ago. There was a tiny stream with a small but loud falls there to lull us to sleep. I can close my eyes and with the crackling campfire and the sound from the pond, we are back in the mountains whenever we go out back.
I’m not one to point fingers, but I blame COVID for the green tomatoes....
My sure fire remedy is as follows...
Put a quarter cup or so of apple cider vinegar with a few drops of dishwashing detergent in a small bowl and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Poke some holes in the plastic wrap with a pencil or something and set it out. Do a couple if necessary. It will catch them all in a couple days.
I get them occasionally when I buy from farm markets. Never seem to get them from my own gardens.
They make me crazy!

So, my research tells me that my tomatoes may not be turning red because its been too hot. According to the experts, they want temps between 66 and 77 degrees to produce ethelyne, ( i think that’s how its spelled) the chemical that causes them to ripen. They also suggest topping the plants as a sort of last resort.
I'll wait on that for a while.
Rg
How about some kind of compost or straw to keep temps down in the soil?
You’re a kind landlord.
My Bride and I have been watching the wrens in the nest box in our front yard. We like to sit out under the maple tree in the afternoon. Yesterday 2 of the little ones left the nest and sort of half flew/hopped across the lawn right next to us. One of the parents was close by moving them along.
One got kind of stuck under our chaise lounge. Kept trying to fly up bad bumping into the bottom. Only about 6’ away from us. Pretty cute to watch.
We’ve had one clutch of bluebirds and 3 of house wrens in out houses.

Rg
Inside in the middle, looks like too much water, have put epsom salts on the beds to try to remedy. Also might have been over watering.sounds like blossom end rot to me Wich is more typical this time if year with heavier dew at night also happens when get a lot of rain on plants. Air flow to plants is crucial prune constantly. Also not sure how you are watering but overhead is not best drip irrigation is best for tomatoes keeping plants foliage and fruits dry ruduces a lot of problems and is cheap to set up
I hear ya Ed!im gonma have to figure something out too....
Mine are coming on fast. Hope I can use them all or cook up some salsa before they go south.
Rg
Looking good Ed... I like those cages......me too, got em at runnings. Pretty durable and perfect sized
There’s so many things that affect tomatoes. Could be Anthracnose, a fungal infection that enters through a wound in the skin.I believe Epsom salt is considered organic. It provides magnesium and sulfur to the plant. It can be used as a foliar spray or watered in. The other option for Mg and calcium at the same time would be garden lime. Both are often deficient In large/mature plants. But it could also be a ph issue, not as common in ground as in containers though.
I think its usually associated with Blossom End Rot.
Not sure what Epsom Salts will do. Please let us know. I like an organic solution to a problem.

I read several articles about it. Basically when the plant gets about a foot tall and has 8 to 10 leaves, you just pinch off the center. I also picked off the first 2 rounds of blooms. I did it to 6 plants and all of them are huge and producing. I also gave them miracle grow plant food every 10 days.Yea I’ve seen a few videos that described topping or not, along with pinching off blooms so the plant grows bigger before fruiting. That is all seems relative to the type of pepper and the length of your growing season. Some types, like serranos or bells take longer mature or ripen. Doing much pruning may set your harvest back too far into the season. then again you may end up with a bigger harvest instead Either way. That’s also assuming your not just picking them when they’re plump but still green. Yes you can pick a pepper at about any point. but since your growing them yourself, shouldn’t you let them mature and taste the fully ripe goodness vs the always immature store bought peppers. Then again, if you prefer the green pepper taste, who am I to judge.

I do have a long growing season. I planted these in late April. I didn't start picking jalapeños until about 2 weeks ago. From what I’ve learned, they turn red and become softer when ripe. They don’t loose any heat but develop more flavor. Plus if you want to save any seeds you have to let them ripen all the way. Though if you have multiple types, you’ll get some hybrids in your seeds.
Not sure what you meant by just picking when they are green and plump? If I let them go any longer they start to get a wood grain texture on the outside.

It’s good to live within a couple miles of Lake Ontario. I usually do not get a frost until mid to late October and the last two years not until the first week of November. Everything is still green and growing. The spring though, sucks. That lake keeps us ten degrees colder than people living south of ridge road.I find that pretty dogone interesting 8)
As far as ripening goes. It is actually caused by the production of a plant hormone ethylene gas. In my former working life, I taught a week long seminar on plant hormones. It was a great lecture for people with sleep problems ;D
To be short, some fruits ripen when in contact with the gas including tomatoes. A green tomato is producing minute amounts of the gas so if you wrap in newspaper, the ethylene gets trapped and hastens ripening. A better option is placing green tomatoes in a paper bag with ripe apples ( bananas would work too but would get too soft). Apples produce a lot of ethylene.
You ever wonder why tomatoes are tasteless in the stores in winter. They are picked green and kept in warehouses that pump an ethylene prohibitory in. Just before shipped, they pump ethylene gas in. That doesn’t work too well for tomatoes but it does for other fruit.
Anyone fall asleep yet? If not, I can discuss hydrogen ion pumps and the cell wall structure of tomatoes. That really killed my students ;D
I will tell you all something that surprised me this morning. That’s great! I wonder if there will be any noticeable taste difference. Please keep us posted on your findings..
On Friday the 18th i covered my green tomatoes with a big blue tarp . Lows down to 26* one night and the rest in the 30's every night..
Not having time to uncover water and recover them every day they stayed that way..
Pulled the tarps off this morning and more than half are nice and ripe..
Kind of like the paper bag.
Temps look good for a while so i have another few weeks..... ;D

Those are freeking hot !Yea so I’ve heard ;D I didn’t try them myself, I cut the top off and (wearing gloves) picked seeds out with a toothpick. When I was done, I hesitated, but I tapped the toothpick to my tongue, like as fast as I could but still touch it. About 5 seconds later that spot stung and my mouth burned like I bit into one of those dried Thai peppers cooked in Chinese food. I also have ghost pepper plant going already, and a shopping list of different peppers I want to get. Not really into really spicy foods myself, but making sauce sounds kinda fun and tasty to use in moderation. Then my family has a Chinese restaurant, and the kitchen staff love their hot peppers. One of the de-seeded reapers, ain’t with a ghost and a handful of fresh Thai chili went to the restaurant for them to try. The other I froze to use in my ghost pepper sauce I hope to make. If it’s too hot for me to use, then my buddy will have something to keep deer out of his garden
You can see where the Carolina Reaper is on this scale. More the 2X hotter than a ghost pepper. Very, very hot!41% as hot as pepper spray? That isn't even food at that point!

First baby asparagus is up, ready for transplanting in a couple months. We have carrots and spinach going as well. Starting the outdoor plants in a couple weeks.
You’ll never regret it. We have a well established asparagus patch. It’s really a treat to have fresh picked for dinner. The asparagus you have to start early, then i'm putting them in 3 inch pots for as long as I can. We have like 200 garlic planted last fall, 3 varieties this year. We did some elephant garlic which is more like A leek, then hard and soft stemmed garlic. I used some groovy black stuff from the side of the lake in my beds last year, and composted them all with it, lots of fish poop and weeds.
Still, it seems a bit early to be starting veggies, but then, we direct sow...except for the asparagus and garlic.

Thanks ice fisher. Not mine I just run it.You ever throw away pots when you transplant or do you recycle them?
That’s only one of 9 greenhouses and it’s one of the smallest on the property..
Going to put the babies in 4 inch pots today.

There’s a lot of questions here.I guess I should have been more specific. These are actually on legs about 4 feet off the ground. I have no problem growing in the raised beds or the ground.
What have you tried to grow
What type of soil have you used
How deep are they
What are “poor results”
I grow 90% of my crops in raised beds with little problem.
Anyway, I spent a good part of today out there in the cold and sunshine doing some cleaning up in my gardens. Cut back the asparagus, cone flowers, sedum, marigolds and other late fall leftovers. Got the tractor out of the garden and in the garage to do some spring tuneup ( not that it needs much).
Fenced in my flower beds to keep the deer from eating my tulips, daffodils, crocuses and lilies. Last year they murdered 60% of them.
Really great to get some sun, fresh air and gardening in.
A taste of things to come.

I have tried green beans ( figured easier to pick) and the plants got about a foot tall and very few beans.
I tried several peppers thinking they would like the warmer soil and they were very small and only produced a few small peppers.
I tried lettuce and other greens and they were too bitter to eat. Also tried onions and they never got bigger than a golf ball.
They are filled with a mix of black dirt and potting soil.
GeoThermo is great 👍.
But you would need an extensive drainage system under there other wise you will have a 4’ deep covered pond. At least around where I am. With the rocky clay soil here and all the run off rainfall it will fill up. My feet are wet every day just from puddles building up from watering in a couple of our houses...
its a loop deal, for air flow reasons cant cap the end. i guess it could be sealed up from water though. condensation mite still collect?
Greenhouse is cleaned up. Still some thick pieces of ice that was sitting on the plastic....
Waiting for the new one.

ATC , I was just thinking the same thing. i'd love to put some faces to the names from here. But it would be one heck of a drive from Niagara county
Nah, it’d be a fun road trip. Take 104 and pick up RG on your way!

Nope. It’s still about half full from Macedon to palmyra.

Anyone ever repair the leak on plastic hose reels such as this?it's crazy how many of those I see in the trash.
I have one that leaks from the outside, where the source enters the picture and one that leaks where you attach the hose.

Couple more weeks Dom and my Bride and I are taking a ride.
Started seeds for Cardinal Climbers the other day. They’ve sprouted and I’ve planted them and moved them to the trough planter to get started.
Spinach is going crazy and we’ll be munching some of that ....probably tomorrow.
Garlic is over a foot high now. Parsley I left in last fall came back. Had no idea it would be perennial.
Rg
Sorry to hear about your wife's foot. I've broken a few too many bones here and there, not fun. Best wishes on her recovery.
My wife has 2 perennial gardens and she actually started growing cactus in them last year. She's heavy into the purple stuff (like phlox and lupine) but also likes the Shasta Daisies.
I don’t disagree. Just have to find a way to either get over putting holes in the new siding or build a stand
Was surprised to get some spring colors back up my sidewalk after the snow and deep freeze..)
A bit of spring color is good for the soul.

Be moldy by then.

Finally sold my chipper shredder. It’s been in the way for 3 years. Nice young man came to look at it a week ago. It started right up but died shortly after. Bought a new carb, installed it and it ran perfectly. He was still very interested and offered me $30 more than we agreed on for making the repairs.
How rare is that? I told him thanks but a deal is a deal. He’s got a good running machine and I don’t have to find a place to store it 11 months out of the year.
Rg
You usually find a way.
Asparagus I’d taking off pretty good. Some really big spears popping out. It up my seed potatoes yesterday. I’ll let them scab over for a week and then plant. Think I’m going to buy my tomatoes and cukes this year. Might start a few in the trough planter.
Rg
Raq,
Do you guys carry lemongrass? Edible preferred, but either is fine.
Thanks!

Very nice. I wanted to put garlic in this year. Do you wait till fall to plant or can you put in now?I would wait till September. The old saying is when the kids go back to school it’s time to plant garlic....
I used to plant my garlic first week of October. I learned something this year. Did my normal planting and then we had an unusually warm fall. The garlic took off and I was worried it would be killed when the deep winter hit. Wrong!!!!got any you can spare for seed?
It looks to be the best crop I’ve ever had. I’ll be planting a bit earlier this fall if it turns out the way I think it’s gonna.
Life is very boring without fresh home grown garlic.
Still have a couple dozen heads from last year to tide me over. We love our garlic and it loves us back.

We had BLT’s for dinner last night…they were good, but not homegrown tomato/lettuce good…going to be a while for us.I pull all the flowers off my peppers until they are about 2' tall. I also top them when they are about a foot tall, makes them branch out like crazy.
Trying something new this year, keeping all flowers off the tomatoes until they reach 18” tall. An old timer told me that he gets much bigger and healthier tomatoes this way. Also said you get less tomatoes overall but the quality is much better.
We’ll see….
Heading out to cut the garlic scapes…going to try and pickle them this year as someone suggested.
The trick to good tomatoes is to plant the little ones sideways. That way more of the stem becomes root, stronger plants every time. I kid you not, old amish secret, or on a lot of raised bed videos. 😉

Huge variety and so easy. I just scratch up the soil with a hard rake, spread and walk around on it to push it in a bit. Stuff starts blooming by the end of may and continues right to the hard frost.
You’ll love it. We’re always amazed at all the flowers.

Sweet and mild Early Scarlet Globe.
Rg
I’ll plant some more radishes today. I’ve got spinach going in the trough planter as well? I fenced the rabbits out last year. Had 2 living in the gardens although they didn’t do any damage.Bob,
Which radish variety do you plant for warmer weather? The early scarlet globes will bolt if it gets too warm. I was thinking of switching to Champions. They’re a bit stronger and smaller than the globes.
Rg
Garden is humming along nicely. Had a small issue with ants but a little Sevin dust took care of them. Rabbits are driving me crazy and are a constant battle. The d**n local fox went and got hit by a car and the rabbits are taking over. Have more fencing this year than I ever did in the past. Most years I didn’t use any. Wife is against the pellet gun, but if they get her sunflowers again I think she will be on board.
Looks great as usual Dom.Japanese beetles attact my asparagus every year. They don't touch any of my other garden plants or flowers so I just leave them be. They have no effect on my asparagus.
I’m battling the yearly onslaught of Japanese Beetles and slugs. Gave the asparagus and clematis a hefty treatment of Malathion yesterday. They were zeroed in on both. Seems to have deterred them for a while.
Added another beetle trap this morning. That makes 3.
Slugs have been after my potatoes and hostas. Used what bait I had on the hostas last week. Picked up some more this morning. Still have to sprinkle some diatomaceous earth around. It works, but washes away with the rain.
Everything else is growing up just fine.

There’s some sort of sticky band you can make to wrap around a tree trunk that catches them before they get to devouring its leaves. You can probably find something with a quick search.

There’s a hillside across the valley called oak hill. Full of oak trees.. It’s bare from the tent caterpillars. I will try and get a picture of it.. Hasn’t happened in 4 or 5 years .
Mine are called Sun Sugar. They certainly are sweet. It’s a low bushy plant with a ton of tomatoes.not sure if it would help you or not, but I stopped my blight problem by pruning the bottom branches. Haven't had a problem the past couple years.
Only planted 3 plants this year. The past 2 years I had problems with early blight. No signs of anything yet this year. Some nice tomatoes coming in.

And you probably live in Gary…………..you don't have to live near Gary to experience pollution in indiana. Farmers constantly dump chemicals......on their TILED fields that drain into our waterways. It's not pollution if farmers do it though.

I work in wastewater and I know of a treatment plant whose effluent dumps into a small creek. That effluent has to be treated to darn near drinking water quality, including using uv sterilization (to kill e.coli). Along the same creek the farmers dump so much manure from dairy farms in the fields that it looks like a lake.
A lot of things to blame for pollution, not just farmers. Aren't there still sewage treatment plants that have the local storm drains running into the plants and when there is too much rain they have to release untreated sewage into the local waterway?Several treatment plants still have combined sewers that do overflow during heavy rains. And the ones that don't have people illegally pumping storm water in their sewers.
We have properties on the lakes here that look like mannicured golf courses. Has to be some serious fertilizer and herbicides doing that.
Where I live there’s little worry about that problem. I’m well out of harms way here in our little village of Macedon. This was definitely a plant based attack. Which really pees me off because I provided the little demon……whatever it was….a place to live and grow. Then it goes and makes me miserable…well…uncomfortable for a week or more I’d guess.
Anyway, I’m gonna spray the worst possible horrible chemical on those weeds I can find and never think about it again. ( not a lot though)
9’ corn…….sounds like it doesn’t need a shot of MG nastiness.

It's a shame we can't fix all those. We can spend billions on the military industrial complex but ... (Not knocking the military as I am a veteran.)At this point there are so many problems that compound the issue I don't know how you could fix the problems. Most municipalities installed water and sewer but not drainage. Now that they are installing drainage, there isn't anywhere for it to go. All the fields around here are tiled. 1" of rain and the creeks are rushing. 2" and they are backed up. There is no where for it to go and ends up in the sewers.
I don't blame you. I'm very sensitive to poison ivy and have had it really bad in my younger days. Plant base dermatitis is no picnic. So whatever it was...
I was only kidding about New York. I actually lived on military property as a dependent in Massachusetts that ended up a Superfund clean up site. They used some kind of chemical around the foundations of our quarters that must have been pretty bad as they totally removed the soil and there is still no development there.
Yeah I have since heard disparaging comments about MG.

I know I keep getting down on farmers but explain to me how if you are to build a new business around here now, you have to have a way to capture and hold a 2" rainfall on your property. But farmers can tile all they want. What causes more issues, run off from the parking lot of a 1 acre business or the 500 acre tiled field next to it.
Sorry for the derailment, just tired of seeing this planet trashed.
that kind of s___ blows my mind! why we have to grow food "safely" here, but we can import stuff grown without regulations at all! who is the moron making this possible? lol
isnt fish food full of contaminates too? its everywhere you turn! in the food in the water in the air. then we have companies like J&J and monsantos that knowingly poison millions of people for decades! those people should be tied in the town square and stoned. imo maybe next guy would think twice.

Same here Mac. I don’t know what they mean by “hardy”
But my mom always has some come back. But there under one metal roof that piles a lot of snow on them..
There’s supposedly a variety called Igloo Garden Mums that are purported to be hardy to -30f. I can’t find any info on where to get them. I’d love to have some for my gardens. I’m gonna mulch the heck out of mine in hopes that it comes back next year. That pot had purple and white. Looks like the white survived.

Looks like quite the mixed bag of peppers. Those would be great in a breakfast casserole.
Those are nice! Ever have any issues with cross pollinating of them?
Mine is healing well after 4 days of taking cetirizine ( aka Zyrtec). Stopped the reaction cold in a couple days. I’m sure mine was plant based. Just can’t identify which weed caused it. I bought the Walmart Equate brand. Same exact dose for 1/3 the cost of the name brand. I took 1 the first 24 hrs, another and another 12 hrs later. Then 2 more at 12 hr intervals. Stopped taking it yesterday. 1% hydrocortisone helped relieve the itching.
Worked for me anyway.
Good news is, my beans have already sprouted and the garlic experiment is working. They’re growing up through already.. it’ll be interesting to see what I get.
Benadryl cream works wonders on insect bites. I’ve used it a couple times at the golf course where I’m working. We’re moving targets for every biting bug there is when we’re mowing.
Speaking of golf…my Son and I are playing the club today. Sure is a benefit to play a $60 per round course free. Also nice to experience the fruits of our labors. It’s kind of our 18 hole garden.
All I have to do is take my hat off. My shaved head is like a deer fly magnet. Mowing the golf course I wear a straw hat that I spritz with bug spray. Seems to keep them away.
I like to take my walk on the canal trail but this time of year I avoid it unless it’s pretty dark out. They’re terrible down there.
First batch of beans and peas are good. Second planting is about 10” tall..
Going out to clean a box with not much going on except a couple tomatoe plants and plant my 3rd round of seeds..
Put your grass clippings around your corn. 100% nitrogen…
But that won’t help much now…
Have to start looking for new seed. These were from last year’s crop..The price for seed garlic online is ridiculous.

i never grown garlic. do you grow from seed?
I haven’t seen a hummingbird mouth in a couple years .., Great pictures.,,
Especially the tomatoe 🍅 picker.. ;D
those squash bugs got me a couple years ago. read up on them.I have read all I can stand to read. Most recommend pulling them off by hand. Or using a neem oil and soap mixture. I had some success with the neem. It's not possible to pick them out of a large patch of cucumbers. After checking out the suggestion of malathion I think that's my best bet. I just replanted zucchini, squash and cucumbers. I know it's late but I'm hoping to attract them so I can kill them.
Tax are you sure that’s sweet corn and not cow corn???
The bigger they are…the harder they fall..I guess. Think I’ll get some corn for the grill later.

I have to get some pics of the irrigation system in operation. We pump from the main pond. Haven’t been in the pump house yet, but the pump has to be a monster. When they fire off the fairway heads there’s as many as a dozen shooting water 75 yards. It’s impressive.
I’ll tell you though…pond water this time of year smells pretty ripe.

Don't be surprised if you see Peterson Farms trucks in NY state picking up apples. They have one of the biggest processing plants in the country north of Shelby. They are the ones that developed the apple slices for Mcdonald's restaurants, so they have to have apples.
Those were just the medium ones.
I won’t plant mine for a couple weeks yet.

I’ve got summer squash, cukes, pickles and tomatoes in the works.I held off on squash, melons and cucumbers. I'm still battling a squash bug problem. It was recommended from some more experienced gardeners to hold off planting. They grow so fast I don't see what it can hurt.
I’ll wait till the cooler weather later this week to plant them. It’ll be a bit late for harvest, but, I don’t care.

Back at it after a 2 year hiatus. And yes planted 2-3 weeks late but nice to have the garden back up and running.
Got one last bed to fill, just not sure what to plant this late in the game in upstate NY. Stay tuned….

Beans…if nothing else.
Looks great,
I've had an interesting year till now to say the least! But feeling good! ( Little slow) but retirement is letting me do things at my place right now, and tomorrow I'll be planting everything and this year be able to have time to maintain it! And not just go look in fall lolHe!! Yeah buddy. I know the feeling. I took my congestive heart failure as a big eye opener. Doing things a little healthier but slower. I want to enjoy this part of my life
The clematis finally popped, the bumbles have been busy, and I got a little help with the garden this morning.

Pulled a sample of my garlic a bit ago.

I wear a 2xl glove. 6 cloves an inch across. That’s my kind of garlic.
Looking good Ed. 👍👍Thanks Bro
I think I'm giving up on the garden, chipmunks have eaten every tomatoes just before they ripened. Now they have pulled all the green ones off, nothing left I only had three plants. I still have yellow squash and zuchini, cucumbers also.I almost gave up on mine too. The last 2 years the squash bugs have destroyed mine. Luckily I have a handle on them so far this year. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth the hassle.

Mine has ended up looking like a prison camp. Between the rabbits, squirrels and deer, I have to cage everything to keep them out.
Only thing they don’t touch is my beloved garlic.
That would signal a full scale assault….no holds barred…..straight up “ shoot ‘em dead defense”.

I have caught this guy in my raised beds. He doesn't seem to harm much, just lays around and chases the ladies. I only see him eating clover and dandelions outside of the garden.
Cute little guy
He is pretty cool but he's anything other than "little". He's at least twice as big as the other rabbits running around.
Doesn’t look wild to me. Probably an escapee or released pet.
I agree with Bob.
(I hope you were sitting down partner)
Wait…my heart…aarrrrggghhh! No…I’m ok!
We picked all the sweet peppers but there’s still a bunch of hot ones left.zucchini cookies sounded good. Mentioned it to the wife and now we have several bags of cookies, along with several loafs of zuchini bread in the deep freeze.
Tomatoes are just silly this year. We and canned and frozen enough for 2 years.. Still getting cucumbers and nice small zucchini’s . Mindy made chocolate chip, zucchini cookies the other night. I should weigh 300 pounds. But still 190. 😎
Wow, Bob 60 cloves........... We did about that today from 3 different type garlic bunches. I thought it was a lot more than the usual planter. Staked out the sections and labeled for next year. I made a stick to insert in the ground and worked it in circles to widen the soil. Dropped the garlic in and pushed with my finger. Closed up hole afterwards. Made the job much easier. Hopefully lots of garlic next year. Plus, in the sun more than the main garden. Wife is waiting for the leaves to fall to add mulch on top.

I never heard of German Hardneck garlic. Will have to try and find it.I can get you some next June, my friend does 3 to 4000 garlic every year and he does about 500 Hardneck. He grows really good onions too, and he isn't even in A muck field. We get our seed garlic there and its all organic. Elephant garlic is good too, it is more mild but great stuff. We just put our garlic in, going to get spots ready to put in A lot of berries on our lot next year.
Raq
With your expertise, you would fit right in. Holland is looking for volunteers to plant the 1 million tulip bulbs that need to go in the ground this fall
While working in Price Chopper I wondered through their produce section. They had a garlic bunch about 4" in diameter with 4-5 cloves in each. Holy Cow!!!!!! That's huge. I didn't buy any because of the $4 each price tag. It would take several years to recoup your $$$ at 4-5 each. Never seen one that big.Probably the elephant garlic. More than likely it wouldn’t do well anyway. It would have to be an organic variety. Much of what’s in the super markets isn’t and comes from another country.

Has anyone heard of honey butternut squash? We had gotten a couple at a farmers market but unfortunately never got back there. I can’t find them anywhere.
It’s actually called Honeynut squash. Supposed to be a more concentrated flavor and a darker orange color.Thank you, Figured I had the name wrong. Haven’t found any in the grocery stores. Will have to wait till summer for the Farmers Market.
Nice job guys..
A lot of people buying flowers and vegetables today. A lot of them were replacing the ones they bought last weekend.. 😎😎

Were you selling rolls of plastic with those flowers and veggies Dom? 8)
Exactly why I waited. Been burned before.
Good for business though eh Dom?
And stew!!
Dom talked me out of using that MG stuff years ago. Only organics now. Use the Mg on the flowers…not the food. I use Jobe’s organics and Ecoscraps and good compost for the most part.
Yes….cut off the scapes. Eat them or not…your choice. I scatter them around my other gardens to keep the critters out. Makes a big difference in the bulb growth..
Bob, I put the basil flower tops in my lunch salad. Super delicious!!!!!!!!!! Now, I put basil in my salad every day and try adding all the fresh herbs to our food.. We have way more than we will ever eat. Giving a plant to my sister when we are vacationing at Cayuga Lake State Park next month along with some tomato plants.. She lives in Seneca Falls. What's the average amount of peppers do you get from a single plant?? I counted 8 that are formed and 5 more flowers coming out. All on just 1 plant. 2 others the same. Is it best to let them all grow to potential or nip some to boost the size in others??? I'm referring to green bell peppers. We also have sweet banana peppers coming out too. TIA...........I have always done best by pulling the first couple rounds of flowers off until the plant puts on some height. I get tons of large bells every year. I have heard in areas with short growing seasons that it isn't recommended though. No problems with doing it that way in indiana.

Could it be the soil?? Type of water?? Well or city?? How about fertilizer?? We have city water but collect it off the roof into 40 gal buckets and down to 5 gal I get from the supermarkets. Those buckets are filled to the top with my soil and holes drilled up from bottom about 3" to give the roots more water as the plants grow. I have a basil plant that makes yours look like 1st prize at the county fair. Don't know why.

O.K. garden experts: What going on with my pepper plants? Every other plant in the garden is doing great which includes tomatoes, lettuce, baby corn, and zucchini. They suddenly started to wilt and one was so bad it was a lot cause. Two of the four never seemed to grow well although they did develop buds and one pepper. I wondering if I just bought bad plants. Is it too late to plant seeds and start over?any sign of bugs? Looks like lack of water but not if you water daily. Peppers don't like too wet of soil but that doesn't look like your problem as that normally turns them yellow.
Not enough water can't be it as I water them every morning unless it rains. Maybe too much water? Too much sun? I did notice roots were exposed on one which could have been from the nozzle on the garden hose set to too much pressure. I covered the roots. But that doesn't explain the others.

Pull your straw back and see if the soil is wet or dry. Check about four inches from the plant about 4” deep..
Most of the old family farms around here that went out of business have sold their barns for barn wood or in the process.. Sad to see them go.
The battle begins!my asparagus gets COVERED in Japanese beetles every year. They never mess with anything except the asparagus and I haven't seen any bad effects on the plants so I just leave them be. Neighbors have traps that are always FULL of them. Until they harm my other plants I think I will leave the trapping to the neighbors.
Found my first Japanese beetle in my asparagus today. Set out 3 traps and killed a few dozen more. Only 4-6 more weeks of battle.

Bees are very good of course, like Bob says, but I'm slightly allergic to them.Yikes, Mac. What if you got stung multiple times? Epi pen?
If I get stung, I start losing my breath and get very dizzy (or dizzier) and will fall over if I don't lie down on the ground.
It quickly passes in 5-10 minutes, but always scares the crap out of me.
Yikes, Mac. What if you got stung multiple times? Epi pen?
You guys should look up the recipe for zucchini relish.. ;)
Is that the guy in the middle? I never got that lucky
I'm pretty sure that I know who your benefactor is Dom. wink wink
Those are really nice!!
Well it’s not the young man you’re thinking of. I have his in the ground still . These we’re just pulled yesterday….
Yellow zucchini? Never grown them. Always just grown dark green here. No, sorry I should have said summer squash, the little crooked necked yellow buggers. They make excellent bread- try it
Yeah I plan on setting them about 8” deep with a lot of leaf clippings on top. It’ll be an experiment but we’ll see.All you can do is try.
Time to pull the first bean plants and put in more spinach. Also have to dig up a planting in the front yard. Need to see what’s left of the bulbs in there and get ready to plant a bunch more. Bought some Allium, Puschkinia and a pile of assorted Daffodils.
Gonna miss my garden. got it all turned over and added some decayed horse manure to wake things up a bit. It works great for me. Only thing left are 2 kale plants, one hardy cherry tomato, and some parsley. Won't miss the mosquitoes.
Just seen there's a new HOTTEST pepper ...Pepper X
exactly! Carolina Reapers are already hotter than pepper spray. It's not food at that point, it's a weapon!
One question.
Why?
exactly! Carolina Reapers are already hotter than pepper spray. It's not food at that point, it's a weapon! Can anyone actually eat Pepper X?
Can anyone actually eat Pepper X?Those could be dangerous for some
Hey Dom when’s the best time to start pot plants lol.
Hey Dom when’s the best time to start pot plants lol.Start them indoors using the same timeline you would for tomatoes. put them outdoors for a few hours at a time as it gets warmer to strengthen them but don't leave them outside if cold enough for a frost . Enjoy at the end of the summer
Good growing Dom.a very good sign for sure. Mine sprouted last fall. Just means it’s happy!
Speaking of growing, my garlic is sprouting, first time planting garlic, is now normal? Planted them in mid-November. Thanks.
Hey Dom , can you keep the seeds from most vegetables from your garden , dry them out and grow them the following year ? I'm going to try that this year, seeds are getting expensive like everything else . Thanx KeithI'm not a good gardener by any means, but doesn't this only work with heirlooms?
Raquette is it time to start Marigolds? would love to see your place sometime what your location?

The wife and I just went to the nursery today. We're brainstorming on some changes to the flower gardens. Got some great ideas, now have to decide. Picked up a few tomato plants & parsley. Hate to buy too early but last year we waited, and the selection was poor.
Badbrad where are you located ?
