Title: Catfish by dams?
Post by: Big Burk on Jul 26, 2006, 12:45 AM
do cat fish tend to feed around dams. if so what side would be the more successfull. i have seen channel cats swimm through the dam close to the surface but i havent tried to fish for them yet there because i am always going for carp and walleye and i dont have any bait besides corn. any info will help.

I would fish the down river side of the dam.

I fish near a dam on a small river near my home and have caught channel cats above and below the dam.  You should understand why the cats are in these locations--food!!   Above the dam the flow of the river brings food to the waiting cat.  Below the dam, the same reason.  Below the dam the cats could be feeding the creatures unfortunate enough to go over or through the dam.  Another plus below the dam is that the water can be cooler because of the water flow.  This can be important during hot weather.

the dam i fish on is on a small channel connecting two lakes and the carp swarm upstream and the walleye swarm downstream as do pike and i always see channels swimming through and upstream of the dam, thanks for the info might try it out this weekend if my uncle doesnt bring the boat to do some trolling, also is catfishing anybetter at night because i am going to the dam for some late night carp and will try for the catfish if this is so.

I love fishing dams.  My advise is to fish that dam day or night.  Use a small hook and worms to catch bluegill or perch. Use a 7/00 hook on your catfish pole. Hook your bait threw the tail, just behind the back and belly fins, cut the tail fin off with a sharp knife, just the fin this shouldn’t make the bait bleed but will slow it down.
Good luck,
