Title: Comet
Post by: SpaceGhost on May 04, 2011, 02:35 PM
Been going the last few days. A couple BIG browns and a salmon been patrolling the boat ramp/ dock...caught a few browns there on sunday too. Was talking to a guy who had pictures on his phone of someone who reeled in a 10 lb largemouth there last week too.

If anyones out there, im the guy with the Marine Corps hat on.

Seriously, wow, I guess I should start fishing there. How big were the browns, I have seen double digits at white before. Are there smallmouths there?

From what i understand there are smallies there. Havent pulled one in myself. My guess on the browns and salmon were between 5-7 lbs.

Calling BS on that one. It would have been all over the fishing sites if a 10 came out of MA waters. Not saying you're pulling a leg, but the other guy......  8)

All im saying is that he had pictures on his phone. Is it possible? I dont see why not. Did it? I do not know. Me personally...if i had caught a 10 lb large before 2010, you all wouldve never known cause i never knew about these sites.

I'm sure there's a few in the state but it's hard to catch an 8lb. bass, let alone a 10. I'm willing to bet there's some fishermen's stretching going on.

Im sure its hard to catch an 8 lb bass but i know of PLENTY of spots here in north central mass where they can be caught.

There are Smallies in there. I have gotten them both soft and hard water fishing at Comet. 5 to 7 lbs browns those are nice fish you won't find them often not even in Comet. My largest brown from there is about 4lbs and that was only once but they are in there. Nice job

Nice. I caught an 8.5 pounder, as well as a 7, so it is not impossible. Are the smallmouths of any size there? My best brown was a 3 pound 21 inch hookjaw. I have been hoping to catch a big one. Any suggestions for either fish

I love seeing pictures of bass over 7lbs from the North East.   Know why?  Cause there ain't many.

Back when I worked at a local baitshop, I had at least a dozen guys come in with their huge 8lb, 10lb, 12lb bass and not a one was over 6lbs when put on the digital scale.

Gotta weigh your bass, my biggest largemouth was 6lbs 4oz was 22.5" and I swore it was 7lbs or 8lbs when I caught it,  then I threw it on the scale before I released it.

All this is a little different though, cause for some reason your mass ponds grow WAY WAY bigger bass than my upstate NY lakes do.

Big Red,
Where are you in NY??  I grew up outside of Albany and have not noticed much different in the size of bass in that area from where I live now (near Boston) and I fish all over the place...

Exactly my point. Get a weight, picture, and a pic of the monster on the scale, and you'll have very few doubters.

I'm going by the fact that the Mass state record LMB is 15lbs....NY's state record is only 11-4.

You be the judge on these two. I know that both these fish were heavy enough to make me actually make me need to use my muscles.

Off the cuff, they both look to be in the 5lbs or so range....the bottom one maybe 4'14 or 5'2, top one 5'8

VERY, VERY NICE BASS!!!

I agree with Big Red...Body on the second one is big, but his head is kinda small in comparison...

and also, Big Red, I hear ya...I was surprised to learn that the MA record was so high...I think its one of the higher ones on the east coast...I'm surprised NY hasn't put up a bigger one, with places like the Mohawk/Hudson Rivers, Great Lakes, Oneida, Lake Champlain...not to mention countless other spots that hold big bass.  Keep hunting for that monster I guess!

I fish Comet alot both ice and open water. If you have a canoe/kayak its GREAT to troll since its so long and skinny. Saw a guy pull an 11lb salmon thru the ice last year.

Ive caught so many bass that are in the 5-7 lb range in the last 2 years less than 10 mins from my house i cant even count them all. I think some of you just arent fishing in the right areas or spots or just arent that lucky.

I have a photo in my store of a 10lb 3oz caught in 2008 here in haverhill. It was 25" long, 19.25" girth, caught on a jig and craw. If I had a scanner I would put up the picture.

I went there today, and before we had even put the canoe in, I saw the salmon under the dock. He has apparently been there for the past two weeks. He wasn't interested though. I caught a nice tiger trout, a few bass, missed a few smallmouths, and saw two other enormous salmon

There was  very little wind. I saw at least two tigers, plus the one I caught. The smallmouths would follow but wouldn't hit

I got one 10 last October pics on this site. Just over 10 wieghed on 2 different scales that i keep in the boat. Also 29 inches in length. Trolling of all ways. Ashland resevoir. 2 old timers cruised right up to my boat as we were taking pics they watched me fight it. They both said it was the biggest they had seen caught in person.

I can't believe you I have never seen a trout over a pound there and I live in Ashland. I caught one brown in august by the outflow in the sudbury at 21 inches, with a big hookjaw. But ten pouds is ridiculous

I believe it... I've seen trout that big and a brown well over 10lbs was caught in 2008 which was a new MA record... On Saturday a 6(i think it was actually 6.5) pound rainbow was caught at Webster Lake at a bass tourney.

Sorry I didn't add the fact that the 6.5 fish was a rainbow trout haha. That part probably would have been important. He caught it cranking at the tourney.
