Title: Grub tails
Post by: Fisher84 on Sep 10, 2012, 09:24 PM
I fish in clear water of depths up to 9 feet in a small river with swift current. What color grub would you fish in that situation? I currently have only black with no success.

My ''go to'' would be Smoke / silver fleck ... mimics a small bait fish.

In clear water use natural colors like silver. White also work when it's clear.

1/32 upto 3/16oz jig head depending on the setting. Thread them on straight down the seam, and away they go.

I put the hook so it comes out the seem with the tail up on a jig head.
I use to run black and white if you haven't yet you got to try PB&J they are smallmouth killers I tell you.

I have always liked the Power Bait brown grub with chartreuse tail.  I have not seen PBAnd J but will get a bag if I see it.  I too rig it so the tail is Up and doesn't tangle with the hook.  I usually use a plain jig head too.

What's cawling/swimming around in the river?  If it's loaded with crawfish use brownish colors, if minnows are the largest food source go with slivers, if there's a muddy bottom and leaches go with blacks and dark blues.  Try to match the hatch, kind of like a fly fisherman does.

Like others have said white has worked for me in clear and murky water. also try the double tail grubs with a football jighead. I have crushed the walleyes and smallmouth in the rivers and lakes around me with this set up. 1/4-3/8 jighead. yellow with black spots definatly shouldn't be overlooked either

1/32oz or 1/16oz or 1/8oz jigheads
Always thread your grubtails on the hook so that the tail bends OPPOSITE then the hook, that why the tail doesn't catch on the hook as easily.

clear water river, yes natural colors work best.
watermellon or green pumpkin, silver/gray, black or white and that PB&J colors work great.

I would start out with a 2" grubtail and maybe go up to a 3" if there are larger fish, but a 1/16oz jighead with a 2" grubtail is my all time favorite bait to throw.
