Rude the Dude- I've already released almost 10 Maine "keepers" in the last week. You know you have a slot limit right....?

In my mind one 28" to 32" is a perfect fish to keep..... Enough meat, but not as much built up toxins as a 40"+.

Caught on live maks. I haven't spent much time fishing yet due to boat issues. I caught my maks in the river Sunday, ocean temp was still only 51.9. This weekend there should be some bigger fish moving in.

Fish are in Joppa Flats. Hit it last night (6/7) from high tide at 8 pm till 1 am. Around 25 fish total, 8 were keeper size but nothing above 32". Chunk Mackerel and one on eel.

PaulB, I tried sending you a PM but your inbox is full. We were out there last night and tonight too. Dragged some eels around and threw a lot of lures. Didnt have nearly the success you did.
Were you anchored and drifting the chunks back or were you drifting and dragging the chunks?
May have to try some chunk macks to get into some bigger fish. Have only landed a few keeper sized in three trips there this week. Most of them have been 12-20". Frustrating to drive from two hours away only to catch shorts.

Went out last night in the P-Scat and fished the incoming from shore got into some bass the first 2 hours pretty steady. Turned the headlamp on at the shoreline to remove some trebles from a smallish bass and a big wake started heading right at me and it was a school of squid that would follow the headlamp wherever you turned, weird part was these were not the same squid I always have caught the last few years they were far bigger I'd say at least double the size of the normal species. Pretty cool to watch wish I had a squid jog on me. Anyone have any idea on species? Lolligo or illex etc? Any input would be appreciated

Sharktopus.....  ;D

Longfins? How big approx were they? Might have to bust out a jig and check a spot tonight.

Small bass up to 25" were going crazy last night on a large school of silversides pushed up in a cove. Heard a splash or two that was def a bigger fish. Half a 6" sluggo as a dropper was killer. The river is full of all sorts of bait right now!

Not sure bro, maybe short fins? I would say around 16" all kidding aside. And huge mass though. That's all we had last night as we'll was bass up to 26". Red gill teasers were junk for me last night all came on bomber long A and Black 9" slug. Slow rolled. They were crushing silversides all the while I was there I did watch a absolute stud break surface at the back of a lobster boat transom last night though. Can't believe the amount of silversides you can't see through the water

Flats were empty last night. Got there at 8 stayed till 1 am. Maybe a dozen schoolies, some only 15 inches, biggest was 26. Nothing hammering the surface and didn't see anyone bringing fish in. Can't gettem every time I guess. Jobsite, you back  in the game yet??

Too busy fishing.  ;D

Striper bite has been good (would like to be seeing more big fish though). Went over a well know bridge yesterday and it was packed with people on both sides. Didn't stop but saw someone pull a full string of macks up as I drove by. There is tons of tiny bait in the river feeding the bigger bait and schoolies.

Squid were around in decent numbers last night, some big ones too.  ;)

Post by: cornshark on Jun 29, 2014, 06:25 PM
I think they went nocturnal on the squid kid. I went out yesterday caught a dozen dinks. There are fish there not close to the numbers of the last few years. I hate to say it but I think  the population isn't as strong as most people think. All those fish that were 34-36" last year have probably been raped by the comercial guys this year. That has been the predominant age class off fish up here for the last 3 years from my observations. Could be slim pickings till regulations change which could take years. I have been averaging 11-15 on my last 4 outings but there is normally times in June where I have 30-40 fish days.

Cleaned some mail up.

Across the board, everyone who I've talked to agrees the populations of bigger fish are way down.  ???
There are good numbers of small schoolies right now..... still tons of small bait (silversides) at a few different spots tonight. Had to get away from the schoolies just to find some squid that would bite.

Squid are around. I stopped by a spot last night and it was really slow. I'm guessing because the water was so cloudy from the rain/runoff. I think most moved to clearer water near the mouth.

I was out on the 4th my last trip, caught probably 6 of those 30-31" and 1 36", and a bunch of small guys. Was trolling umbrella rigs, did not really locate any bait, water temp was only 54 out front.

Daytime bite has been steady all week. Bombers, SP's, jigs w/sluggos, bucktails w/pork have been producing well. A buddy and I caught 23 this morning during outgoing. Biggest was a fat 36" fish. Also found a very small bluefish that didn't look injured but was not swimming right.

not a problem at all its tough to say there are alot of options cod, haddock, flounder, stripers, they are all good. what type of fishing do you plan on doing? going off shore for a full day of cod/haddock jigging or staying more inland for flounder or stripers? either way good luck

very cool man and i totally understand. this time of year would be alright for stripers do you plan on going on a smaller charter (more expensive) or a larger one. i would recommend a smaller one if you have about 4-6 people you will get more attention from the guide and have a better shot at fish without line tangles from other anglers. they are still getting cod and haddock out deep so you have the same options for this aswell. you could always surfcast from the beaches and jettys if yoiu have the gear.

if your into eating fish, nothing beats a fresh haddock fillet fryed in butter with salt and pepper. 2 mins a side. and there are cod and haddock out there if you know where to go.(http://i961.photobucket.com/albums/ae98/deerhunterflife/016_zps447bd9d8.jpg) (http://s961.photobucket.com/user/deerhunterflife/media/016_zps447bd9d8.jpg.html)
Not sure when/where you caught those but we are no longer allowed to keep those dink cod and haddock in the gulf of Maine. Speaking of  Sad when it takes 20 groundfish to fill a box.

Now those we can keep. :) We have some guys on this sight who fish the headboats out of Seabrook and Hampton.
Some of them come from out of state. I fish those partyboats regularly and my report was to let them know
that the season was ending, to get out if you can, but don't have the highest expectations as it has been a difficult
year for keeping fish (ON THE PARTYBOATS). Lots of shorts (thanks to new regs) and larger Pollack seem to be late arriving.
I'm glad for you that you know where to get em and have a boat to get there. I do have a little clue about the groundfishing on Southwest Jeffries. It is not good.  :(  Again, Im fishing the marathon on Monday on Eastmans fleet and will report. Hopefully it will be a better report than the last.

Got 2 and missed 2 tonight. Only little guys (22-23"), but they are in the Piscat. Tonight was my first time going for them this season and it was great.

Plenty of bait stacked at the dams, Bring on the big girls!

::) Tom might know more about this?   When the stripers are here in full force, does anyone really think that they are in schools of like size?
When you hook up regularly with small fish I've found that there are cows there too.

I agree that there can be cows mixed in or at least close by... I will never forget the time I hooked a schooly and had two huge bass come up out of the same hole and try to eat it!

Many times you will get a few cows mirroring underneath the schools of smaller fish just sucking up the scraps that sink below the little ones after the melee. They get lazy in there old age.

Fishing cut bait off the ledges at Pemaquid Point we would often see a big cow cruising toward our mackerel chunk, under a bobber, and than half a dozen small stripers would shoot by the cow and grab the bait.

Lazy cows! They just follow around the lobster boats! ;D

Have not seen any larger fish yet, but there should be some around. Slow pick the last few nights, 7 fish for the season and a bunch of missed hits so far. Mostly on black slugs, one on a burple sp and one on a silver pencil popper dragged across the surface at dusk.

We picked up a couple schoolies in the Piscataqua Sunday. One 20" and the other 24". Also broke off something that felt like a keeper. It was a nice day to be on the water!

Temps still too low. 46-48 in the ocean river temp in little bay was only 53 at the tail end of the tide. Silversides are all moving into the river so I would bet the maks will make their appearance. I would say another 7-10 days before we see consistent sized keeper fish.

3 fish tonight. One being a fat 30" (released). First keeper sized fish of the season. Also lost a fish that felt a bit bigger. Got me it the rocks and broke off before I could back off the pressure.

They had one of the eels in a flowing water tank at Ktp and it looked very good (had no hooks) and I've been eye balling them at suds the last few times in there. I'm wondering how fast it sinks and if removing the back hook lets the tail have more movement?

Now I'm feeling like spending more money I shouldn't on lures.......  ;D

Had a good day on the river Saturday. 13 fish total with 2 keepers. One 36" but skinny and the other an even 28". Got checked by F&G who said we were doing the best of anyone they'd checked so far... that'll do for an ego boost.  :P  Keepers had empty bellies. Seems bait hasn't arrived in force just yet.

Sounds like a good day nixstyx! Assuming you were in the P-scat, were you getting them near the mouth or up in the bay? What were they hitting?

I got 6 and my buddy got 4 today. First time this year fishing the daytime for me. I lost a very nice one, was chasing it down the shore. Ended up somehow pulling the hook. Felt like at least a 36-40" fish. My buddy got a 30-31" for his first fish of the season and he released it for the good fishing karma. White bucktails with white plastic trailers or jig head and white plastic.

Nice. Yes, it was Piscataqua. Mostly we were up river and didn't mark anything  or get any bites below the Rt 95 bridge. Water was pretty chilly at the mouth ... around 45 ... Thinking active fish are looking for a bit warmer water up river still. Maybe?

Oh, almost missed the seecond part of the question. Chartreuse swimbaits when sun was up, black Bomber around and after sunset

Been putting the hammer to em the last few evenings before sunset.10 yesterday and 4 today. A bunch in the mid 20" and two at 27". Decided mix it up and try a 9" green over chartreuse sluggo based of nixstyx saying chartreuse swim baits were working for him. It was funny, I literally had no confidence in the color and caught one off the first cast with it. Had a boat drift by today and they pulled up a nice one, prob 36-40". I'm assuming they were fishing some sort of live bait.

Slow pick this morning, got 2 one at 29" (first fish I kept this season) It had 4 decent sized green crabs in its belly. Got it on a white z-man plastic/jig head. There plastics are made of some different stuff that seems hard to rip. The bait looked brand new after catching a fish, hard to say that with a sluggo most of the time. Also had a very nice fish break me off yesterday. Took me in the rocks and gone.  A lot of boat traffic on the river yesterday (Sunday). Good luck to everyone getting out there.

How's the bite been for everyone? Seems like some fish are moving back in the river. Got into a bunch of schoolies up to 27" tonight with a buddy. All on 9" black sluggos, black bombers and burple sp's. A guy close to us got a nice 42" with a fat belly fishing on bottom with chunk mack. It was his only fish of the night and he said it was his personal best. Maybe I'll post a pic of him with it tomorrow.

Hit the beach in that boat on the flats with eels at night bro! Quality will increase 10 fold I promise, wish I had the time to show you. Glad to see some squid showing up in this cold water, I try to save some for sea bass bait but I end up eating them lol

The big boys are closer to the shore and jetties than people realize I saw a monster hugging the jetties after all what are the bait stripers are feeding on little fish eating the junk washed up on  shore looking for an easy meal crabs , sand eels ,ect for me catching a big boy is great but catching over a 100 good size is awesome fun to
Title: Re: NH Saltwater Thread
Post by: Clams on Jul 10, 2015, 05:18 AM
I think most of the bigger bass have been holding closer to the mouth and along the outside. More macks around there (not much big bait upriver of 95). That might change though, if the squid come in the river thick.

Im guessing it's BS, no pics out of the water...... Deinintly a nice striper, but not 100lbs. That fish is way in front of his body, probably still attached to the spear in his hand.

Anyway, word is squid are coming in thicker then a few weeks ago (I haven't been trying for them though) Got 3 fish Tuesday night biggest was 34" which I kept. It's been hard to find bigger fish this year, a lot are right under "keeper" size. Last night was slower with only a few small fish. Caught mostly on the disco burple sp minnow.

Did a little flounder fishing yesterday just off plum island in about 35 ft of water .  Nailed them but only 6 keepers out of about 25 flounder most were between 8-11 inches but fun on a bait caster !!  Then my main man caught this little fluke outside the mouth ! Then I got one too  Took a quick pic and let them go !! I was surprised to see that have any body else caught a stray fluke up this far yet this year ?  (http://)(http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r551/Rpolcaro/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-07/2D557976-56B5-42CF-B2AA-B3F13B4B9F0C.jpg) (http://s1171.photobucket.com/user/Rpolcaro/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-07/2D557976-56B5-42CF-B2AA-B3F13B4B9F0C.jpg.html)(http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r551/Rpolcaro/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-07/FAD90EE4-D0EE-4981-B428-09278126DAC3.jpg) (http://s1171.photobucket.com/user/Rpolcaro/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-07/FAD90EE4-D0EE-4981-B428-09278126DAC3.jpg.html)

Not much action going on here, so I'll kick us off. Heading to the Piscataqua tomorrow to see if I can track down some schoolies. Supposedly they're here. If not, then we'll try to stock up on bait. Will report back!

There are definitely some mid to high 30" class fish around and I would guess some 40"+ already as well. I've only caught them in the 23"-26" range so far, but I saw a pic sat night of a fish the guy said was around 35-36". He also broke off two other nice fish because he was under gunned using a light schoolie setup. Tight lines everyone!

Weekend showed fish from top to bottom in River, a big pod of school bass just under 28", caught a couple fish I. The low thirties have not seen any bigger fish yet. I am sure here is a few 36" pluses some where just haven't caught one yet. Bait catching consistent, water has risen about 8 degrees in he last 10 days. Big tird pollock where in the river yesterday, not what I want to catch for bait but when you have a five year old he wants to catch a 100 before its time to start striper fishing.

Pulled this guy out of the Piscat. I never did get an accurate length -- it was longer than the 34" measure on the boat. Went about 20lbs. Caught on a green mackerel colored SP Minnow. Was pretty wild ... I saw a small schoolie following my lure (probably 20-24") so I paused a second to entice a hit. Then, out of nowhere, this one emerges from below and absolutely crushes it. Made several good runs, but was able to keep it out of structure.  This was last Saturday. Ended up catching a bunch more in the 24" to 27" range around the same area. Lots of mackerel to be caught around the mouth, as well.

Has anyone been catching any really small fish? Around 9-10"? A friend of mine was telling me there had been reports of juvenile stripers in the bay which would indicate that they have been breeding successfully in or around the bay. there may be a few benefits to the weak winter we had last year after all.
Title: Re: NH Saltwater Thread
Post by: Clams on Jun 09, 2016, 10:09 AM
People are saying there are a lot of micros this year. I've only caught one tiny one but I mostly fish larger lures. Caught 3 "keeper" size fish midday up to 34" last week all in back to back casts with a white bucktail/curlytail, then they moved off. They were bloated fat and happy to be released.

There is a ton of bigger bait in the river now, mostly closer to the mouth. Macks, pollock aka turds, larger size herring, and squid are around. There should be some nice size fish to be caught. If your a shore fisher and want bait the new castle bridge right before- after high tide with a sabiki will get you bait easy. Also the 103 bridge in Kittery is producing bait easy. Good luck and tight lines everyone.

Fished the end of the Ebb and start of the Flow from 9pm til 2 am last night. Fished hard too. Not a single fish besides one swirl. Should of known with the amount of mud bugs, crabs, and juvie Flounder I could see everywhere I looked that no predator was in the vicinity. Actually been doing better in daylight the last week.  May do a quick trip tonight. Kids got practice early tomorrow. Wouldn't mind a false dawn trip those are best IMO

Definitely slower action today, from what I saw. We did manage a few in the 24" range plus a 30" fish we sent back. Didn't come away empty handed though, we jigged up a bunch of squid near the mouth of the river and fried up some calamari tonight.

I didn't fish much last year cause of work but over the last 7 years of fishing with a boat it's the worst year I have seen as far as numbers and size. Good luck, live Macks are the ticket. Some nice reports coming in from the south end of the island with scattered fish near the jetties and along the beach lip. Tides are close enough by my standards, but here's a good link for that specific area you may find useful>http://www.tides4fishing.com/us/massachusetts/plum-island-merrimack-river-entrance (http://www.tides4fishing.com/us/massachusetts/plum-island-merrimack-river-entrance)  Also, the Park Rangers are monitoring and removing persons fishing from the jetties ;)  Tight Lines~

If anyone wants poogies there 2-3 big schools outside of plum island Sunday  !  Snagged about 20 then live lined them to no avail !  Couldn't believe I didn't get one hit on them perfaps the boat traffic was just to much !  Tryed fishing them under the school seen some big fish darting threw the school but couldn't get them to bite ! So I took home 6-8 that died and released the other live ones at boat ramp before I pulled out of the water !

Not hearing any reports so I will post one. Didn't fish the last week but week prior on two outings in the piscataqua I caught one over forty inches and last Friday one just under. Bait was harder to catch as usual nearing July. Not a plethora of fish in the river but you just have to keep moving till you find some.

Death of this site. Does anyone feel like people have drawn back from posting cause some people throw pics up and greatly exaggerate? Haven't heard any salt reports in awhile. I was fortunate enough to catch a 30lb striper last week. It has been 8 years since I caught one over 30lbs. It was only 42" weighed it on two certified scales. I caught one earlier this year similar in length but was probably around 21-22 lbs.  there weren't a lot of fish where I caught it but there was a few hounding on squid. It always harder deep into summer as feeding habits change catch rates go done but the chance for a trophy are better. I have caught nomwaysnhear the number of 30-36" fish that I normally do cause I just don't think they are there if you look at age classes and harvest rates over the last decade. Tight lines to every one. I would post pics but I don't use photo bucket.

Hit Old Scantum yesterday... caught a lot of haddock, 8 keepers, 3 undersized cod, 2 cusk, 4 red fish, 2 hake, NO dogs! I was really surprised on the number of haddock we caught, must have been around 40...all on flies and clams at 200-250'!

Thanks for the report, we were out on scantum, week ago saturday, 2 haddock keepers, about 10 keeper cod, released all but 4, (4 guys on the boat) 1 cod was about 30 in, no dogs, 2 cusk everything caught on jigs and pink teasers.  My friend went back out all over  this past Saturday, fishing was very poor, many dogs and alot of small hake.

We hit the water after the last report and got no dogs and were pleasantly surprised. The spot we fished the first report we caught 0 fish??? We moved a couple of miles and got into whales like I have never seen and had one breech within 75 feet from the boat!! If it landed on us we were dead!! We saw lots of fish on the screen, but only caught 1 keeper haddock and no keeper cod, 1 squirrel hake, and a couple of small redfish. On the way back in we noticed a dragger dragging the area we fished last time out. Now we know why there was nothing!!! Most were juvenile fish and I'm sure thousands were caught and killed by that net... sucks!

the only thing more plentiful than micro bass are chipmunks!....I've been just fishing monster plugs and sluggos trying to avoid them... still catching 10"micros on an 8" plug or 9" sluggo...

Cuttyhunk lost the bass they had last week and a big slug of 25- 40lb bass moved through the canal last week... we'll have em  around the new moon..

This is true for me as well Roccus....Even the little wannabe bass are hittin the yellow plug i got from you at the gathering a couple years ago. Hoping it lands me some stud keepers in a few weeks.

I hope they show( soon) too... I spent the last hour of the outgoing and the entire incoming tossing a 7" sand eel plug I make to acres of swirling fish...nothing in that school was over 8 lbs... there's a lot of sore mouthed fish in that river this morning... and I'm tired..laid my head on the pillow a little after 2... was at work by6:45..I'm getting too old for this!...just wish they were bigger.... every cast I felt would bring  better class of fish..it just didn't happen... but it will!

Glad your getting out Joe.  Wont be long until the cows are there.  There were some decent fish in the ditch last weekend.  I almost broke the 30lb mark on one Friday night.

No not in numbers and the few around are very small that I've seen. Keep in mind I fish P-scat and north can't speak for more southern areas

We got a bunch of 28 to 33" fish last night in the river.  Hoping for some bigger ones,  I'll be getting out in the boat next week.  I'm a little late this year.  Put in a new finder and did some rewiring.  Always takes longer than I think.

Nice Skinny...Its getting better out there. I still havent been getting any over 27" fishing from shore, even though I hear there are big ones around. mostly fishing the river, but tried a couple spots off the beach thatr usually really good without much luck. So many micros this year, tired of wasting my time with them.
Good luck on the boat...

First time out this year.  Macks at 2KR and 8 fish from 24 to 29 in the river. It was a great day even with the fish...

Made a trip down to Niantic, Ct this past weekend to fish with some buddies and Captain JohntheRek. Got into some decent sea bass and I caught a bonus 21" flounder. Perfect conditions Saturday. Here is a few pics.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Hope everyone is ready for the salt!

Been out the last 4 nights. Missed 3 fish and landed one last night (31”) released. Saw a few others caught 23-27”. Not sure if they’re holdover fish or not? SOL migration charts says schoolies are at the cape now.

I’ve heard rumor the past few years of some micros being caught pretty much year round. I was told there are some that stay around and spawn now so maybe that’s what your seeing?

Either way that sounds like some great action for this early!

Nice work Adam! I’ve caught them here in April before in the cocheco so I wouldn’t doubt. However with some of the 10” fish I catch you know they are holding in great bay. Anyhow, congrats you win this year  ;)

Endless rats around to catch, probably averaging about 27 a trip for a few hours on shore. Flounder are slowly getting better, only 1-3 fish each time so far but Saturday I only got a sea Robin lolll

It seems after the storm yesterday the micros have dropped back a bit from the creeks and dams. I caught around 50 this am in 2 hours. A welcomed surprise. I have caught very few micros this year until today and was getting worried about this age class having poor representatives here in say 6 years. I think it also provides a valid arguement for what many of us believe in that there are more resident bass here than believed.

Pogies everywhere this weekend not a lot of Bass under them.  Caught up to 34" fish was hoping for cows.

Post by: AquaAssassin on Jul 04, 2019, 05:19 AM
That happened last year as well, very strange. Tons of pogeys and no big bass on them to speak of up here from P-scat north. They all stayed keyed on Mack’s. When I was a kid the pogeys would bring in huge bass and Blues right up the river. The pogeys seemed to disappear for a while up here and now that they’ve been back a couple years they don’t seem to bring the big girls with them anymore

Fished the P-scat from them shore the next day at few spots I usually do well at this time of year and it was super quiet not even a schoolie.  I hope it picks up.

For what it’s worth, I got 3 Stripers yesterday a 16 a 12 and a beautifully fat 26”

Today, I drift 6 hours for Flounder and not one take and blanked on Bass too. I dont know if the quick bit heavy storm last night pushed enough salinity out for the Flounder or what but ocean was dead for me today

I need to figure out what I did wrong

My guess is you did nothing wrong... things sometimes turn over night. They'll be back and you'll be on them again.
