Title: My new (old) boat
Post by: Mac Attack on Oct 19, 2019, 06:01 PM
With the decision made to "summer" here in WNY when we retire, and the upgrades being made at our place on Lake Erie to do so, I decided I needed a bigger boat.
The Lund really served me well.
Anyway, I decided to get another Trophy.
But one not as large as my last one.
This one is only 21' but should work well.
Anchor Marine is storing it for the winter for me.

Here are some pics -

Yup!
Quite a few.
Researching an autopilot currently.
I have used a King 2X on past boats.
They worked just ok.
Not especially good if you were bucking wind and waves.
No longer made, but I can get a rebuilt one with a 3 yr warranty for like $1600.
WAY too much for a sub-par autopilot IMHO.
I am not sure if the steering is cable or hydraulic on the boat.
If hydraulic, Lowrance makes a system that is good, but takes a LOT of time to setup and tune properly.
Also not cheap.

With all of the technology available these days I simply find it hard to believe that nobody markets a simple autopilot for smaller power boats.
Not many options and they all cost $3-3.5K

I put a Lowrance in our 30 foot Southport last year, or more accurately paid someone to put it in. It was expensive but I did a Simrad EVO and 4G radar at the same time so just tacked it on to the bill. Learning how to use it is the challenge. And I can't seem to get the compass to hold it's calibration, but I am sure I am doing something wrong. So far all I can do is hold a course heading, but I'll get more time on it next year.

Get the Lowrance and maybe you can teach me how to use it lol!

The boat is still in storage but I spoke to my buddy over at the marina and he said they did everything I wanted done before they shrink wrapped it and put it away for the winter.

Here is what I had them do -

New gimble bearing and boots on the lower unit.
New fluids and filters in lower units and main motors - both I/O and kicker.
New fuel filters on both motors.
New main filter water separator between main tank and motors (2 outlets, one each to each motor - same as I had on my Lund)
New water pump impellers on both motors
Pull the power cord off my old Lund for the HDS 8 that I kept.

This past weekend I attended the fishing show in the Falls and bought a set of Amish Outfitters planer boards.
They came with two 200' spools of 500# tet5her cord, two heavy shock cords, and I selected the HUGE flags for them.
The flags are like 12" x 8" and the mast is almost 3' tall.
We won't (or other boats) have any trouble seeing them out on the water.  lol   :D
I also got 24 of their orange planer board line clips and a small bag of 200 of the lighter rubber bands .
I like using rubber bands.

Now because these boards pull like no others, I am going to sell my two Cannon single planer board mast and reels.
I'm going to build a 2" diameter aluminum tube rocket launcher and mount some Cisco planer reels and swivel pulleys on it.
The Cisco system is NOT cheap but Frank at Amish Outfitters says he knows for sure their clutch will handle his boards.
He has heard nothing but bad things on all the others.
I spoke to the guy from Cisco at the show and got him to email me a quote for this stuff and state on it that the show price quote was good till the end of May.
This show price carried a 15% discount off his on-line pricing.

We also bought two new Diawa fiberglass 7' downrigger rods
They have a far slower action and will allow us to almost bend them down to touch the water when we preload (cock) them.
Graphite rods simply have far too much backbone to do this.
The other choice was for us to build what we wanted but that woulda cost $100-150 per rod.
These were both under $20 each.
I wanted 2 pc rods and these are 1 pc, but they should be fine as they are the only 2 one pc rods we will have for the boat.

I will add a 2nd HDS8 and ethernet the 2 as I had done on the Lund.
We are also looking at mounting that new 87" Riptide Terova 122# iPilot up front.
But the money is running out with the purchases made on the cruise we are taking in May and new place at the lake and the concrete for it.
So mother Mac's cupboard is getting pretty bare.
I have time and it will fish the way it is for a bit till I can replenish the funds to Donna's satisfaction.   ;)

Took it out for test run
Honda ran but never got to test it in gear
Main motor never got it up on plane.
Also tach doesn’t work.
They put in a new shift mechanism and cables.  I’m sure they aren’t adjusted correctly.
Not happy but it goes back in the morning.

Update 7/12/20.  Got a call from the shop yesterday.  They replaced the tach to get that working.  They replaced the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor to fix the speed/planing issue.  They said it was “missing” a bit as the motor came under load.  They found one spark plug cap that was loose.  I’m not sure I’m buying what the guy said 100%.  I am 64 and have worked on vehicles my entire life.  My grandfather and dad both owned and operated their own garages.  Both my brothers are still auto mechanics and I put myself thru college for a ME degree wrenching on cars and trucks.  I know what a motor sounds and “feels” like when it’s dropping a cylinder.  When I ran the boat 2 wks back it wasn’t missing.  It simply wouldn’t rev up enough to get the boat up and out of the water.  Anyway, he said he ran it and it got up right away and ran easily over 40mph.  I have to travel this week for work but will pick it up Thursday when I get back.  I’ll take it out for a test ride there at the shop before I take it home and make sure it performs.  Also, I’m going to toss in a bottle or two of seafoam into that old gas in the tank.  I’m on vacation all of the following week so I’ll try to run the boat a lot and get most of that stale gas burned up.  Then I’ll refill it with non-ethanol 97 o rain stuff that I typically run in my boats.  In any event, it is reportedly fixed.  We’ll see.

Took it out this morning for a test run.
Fuel gage said it was empty.
W-T-F !?!?!
It had 1/2 a tank when I took it to the shop.
So I figured maybe they pumped out the old fuel too as part of the repair.  But why didn’t they replace it with good fuel?  Or at least a few gallons.
Anyway, we went for a short ride.
Runs great.
CJ and Chris took a swim while out there.
Afterwards we took it to Sunoco and I put 20 gallons of non-E gas in it.  Gage still didn’t move.  It’s an 85 gallon tank.
Came back to camp and put the transom straps on, texted my buddy at the marina, and headed there.
One hour drive and they fixed it while I waited.  Then the return one hour drive back.
I told my buddy Lee I’m burning more gas towing the stupid thing than out on the water.  I was upset and he knew it.
I’m back now and it’s fixed.
The wire was off the gage.
Either knocked it off or never put it back when they replaced the tach.

Here’s a few picks of my son Chris and my grandson CJ.

Looking good Mac 👍🏻 Now get out there and put some fish in that boat 😉

I wish!

Still have the 2 depthfinders/gps to install with the transducer, Ethernet, and NMEA200 system.  Also the FishHawk speed and temp at the ball for the downriggers.
Also need to wire up the electric downriggers.  I have plugs and outlets for them to install and wire up.
Also have to install and wire the onboard 2 bank charger.
After all of that I have to load the gear into the boat and restring all of the rods.  They were due last year.  With leadcore and the pre-tied floro leaders, etc, that alone is a day’s amount of work.
Jeff is coming out tomorrow and we will tackle my outdoor sink first.  Then I need to figure out why my central AC isn’t draining properly.  Then up into the boat to start that.
I’m hoping we get it finished and ready by next weekend to fish out of it.  Then we start looking at the Minn Kota and all it requires.  Go search for that thread.  There’s actually 2 of them here on MFF.
I also have the canvass to get, toilet to swap out, cuddy to clean out for the gear and the trolling batteries, 3-bank onboard charger, etc.
Then there’s the raw water wash down system I need to get up and running.  Then I need tunes!!!  I’ve already selected the sound system, speakers, amp, and subwoofer.
Lots of things left to do!
😎

Thanks.
Pulling transducer cables right now.
Jeff and my buddy Jeff are up inside pulling them.  My job is done.
I mounted them on the transom and wire tied them and siliconed the passthrus.
I’m resting.

Got the HDS8's mounted and fully wired.
The ethernet and NMEA2000 setup really works sweet.
Also got the FishHawk mounted and wired and one downrigger wired before the sky opened up.
Supposed to rain thru the night.
Hopefully we can get that last rigger done sometime tomorrow.
I loaded up all of the rods into the truck.
I will restring them all this week at home.
I gotta go out fishing before I kill something.

A few recent pix
Almost ready to fish
Coming back on Wednesday night to finish up that last downrigger and mount the 2 bank charger up in the Cuddy.  Will need to pull 4 wires to the transom where to main batteries are but we pulled a fish when we pulled the transducers’ cables.

With the new (old) boat, I decided to restring all my trolling rods.
So I brought all 19 home yesterday.
So tonight I went out to the garage, turned on the tunes, and got to work.
Did the 2 new downrigger rods with 30# braid and 30' of 20# flourocarbon for a leader.
Did the leadcore rods.
Two 6 color rods and two 4 color rods
Each gets 30# braid, then 27# leadcore with a 30' leader of 20# flourocarbon.
I use uni to uni knots as they are very strong.
I'm getting pretty good at typing them.  lol
Tomorrow I'm going to tie up 2 leadcore rigs, one with 2 colors and the other with 1 color.
These will be for browns in the spring or if we ever decide to send out some lines high for a few steelhead.
They can also be used off the riggers too.
That little bit of lead causes a really nice undulation to the lure.
Charter Captains call it the "Secret Weapon".
Will also need to string up 2 dipsey rods.
Straight 30# braid on these.
And the rest will be strung with 30# and a 30' of 20# flouro for the leader.
These will be used as flatlines and I can add snap weights to them when/if needed.

Got the rest of the rods restrung tonight.
Next day or two I'll retie all of our snap-on leaders.
Making progress.

However, we are putting off finishing the boat till Saturday because I cannot go fishing Saturday.
Our room and roof for the new place is arriving this Thursday and Friday.
They will be installing it on Saturday and Sunday.
Donna wants me around.
So there's no sense running out there tomorrow night to finish the boat as originally planned.
I can work on the boat while our room is being constructed.
Fishing waits another week.
Sigh!

I have a hard time getting uni to uni to work on lead core, as when the lead is removed, tying has a time getting the know down right next to the lead under the sheath.
I've been told never tie with the lead still inside but to remove a few inches, well I can never get the know right down next to the lead, so I've has a few break-offs pulling in fish, which I'm sure you all can feel my pain...
Anyhow, I've disregarded the never tie with the lead still under the sheath, but I did it anyhow and it's been working just fine and makes it thru the guides no issues and hasn't broken off.

I strip out 12” or so of the lead.
You end up with braid.
So I’m tying braid to braid and then brain to flouro on the leader end.
We have used a ton of different knots and we feel the uni to uni is the most reliable.  Not easy to tie on a rockin boat however.

Not sure Bob
My “bad” knee I toasted racing motocross as a kid.  I crashed a lot.
That knee it’s the acl and meniscus that is shot.
They have been in there 3X to work on it.
I’m 67% disabled in that knee.
They wanted to put me on disability 13yrs ago the last time they went in.
I said hell no!!

I was told it was only time before my good knee went south because it would be overworked by compensating for the bad one.

Last night it popped getting out of the tub.
I don’t know what happened but this time it felt different.

I’ll call my surgeon tomorrow and make an appointment

For now it’s wrapped and I’m on crutches.

I've done this but the knot never ends up close to the lead as it should and with it inches away makes for a weak knot on the braid sheath.
Even tried sliding mono or fluoro up inside the braid as a backer but that's almost impossible.
So I tie with the lead left in the braid sheath and it works fine.

My knots on the leadcore are never up against the lead in the sheath.
Always a few inches from it.
Never have a problem.

Here is another way to do it.
Use Spro swivels.
A steelheader's trick.

https://spro.com/collections/swivels/products/power-swivel (https://spro.com/collections/swivels/products/power-swivel)

Tie to the swivel.
Use a size 10 for walleye or a size 8 for salmon.
They pass easily thru the guides.
Actually the #10 is smaller than my uni to uni knots.   :rotflol: :rotflol: :rotflol:

Mac...how's the knee coming along ??

I bought a Don Joy knee brace.
It arrived Saturday and donna went back home to retrieve it for me.
The brace helps.
The pain is now soreness and I can get around.
As a matter of fact, I'm headed to a jobsite in a few minutes to take a few pressure and flow readings on a combustion blower I need to replace.
I cannot do a ladder so the boat needs to wait at least another week.
Besides, Jeff got called out of town to W. Virginia for 2-3 weeks of some service work.
Great opportunity for him, but he is now out of the picture for helping to finish this boat.
We need to pull some more cables up to the cuddy from the transom.
I am mounting the onboard charger for the 2 main batteries up in the cuddy.
I'm doing this because I will have the 3 trolling motor deep cycle batteries and their 3 bank charger up there.
This will allow me to pair both AC plugs into an outlet for an extension cord up front and make it easier to plug the boat into an AC source.
It also putts all that weight up front which will help for running the boat.
I'm also contemplating of installing a Minn Kota 3-bank alternator off the main motor to help charge the 3 deep cycle batteries when running.
So 2 of the cables for that will need to pull rear to the transom area to connect to the main motor's alternator.
Still a bunch of work to do.
The knee will hamper things but I'll get it done.
But I'm afraid the walleye season is quickly running out.
I'll get some fishing in.

Back to the knee.
I've decided to wait to go see the surgeon.
I will need surgery.
I'm not a newbee to this with the 3 I have had over the years on my right nee.
But I'll wear this brace for the time being and go see the surgeon in the Fall after we close the lake place and get the boat winterized and put away.
Thanks for asking.

With the knot not being next to the lead in the braid sheath, what I've found happens is the lead will poke thru over time and cause the braid to wear & fail.
If the knot is next to the lead inside the braid sheath, this happens a lot less.
May just have try those SPRO swivels...

I have never had the lead pop thru.
I have tried to get it to do that, instead of stripping the braid back to pull some out for tying, and have had difficulty doing so.

The 832 has always been one of the highest rated leadcores and has served me quite well over the years.
But Cabelas didn't have any on the rack when I was there trying to use the gift cards.
Sooo...........

I hope I don't regret the decision.

For the most part, the boat ran ok. But there's still performance issues. When I started it at the dock it wouldn't idle down. Was running about 1400-1500 rpm. Lifted the hood and played with the linkage and it dropped down to like 800-850. Still didn't feel right. It did like 45 mph when I got it back from the dealer and popped right up on top. This morning it worked well, however, we had to limit our speed to like 22-24 mph because there were some 2-3' rollers out there. But it ran well. We then stopped, fired up the Honda kicker and trolled all day. When I fired up the main motor it idled high again and we wiggled the linkage to the carb and it dropped. However, when we took off it took forever to get on plane and only managed 31-32 mph @ maybe 4100-4200 rpm. It should be about 4800-5000 at the top end. It's not the prop!!!!! I know what prop issues feel like being around these rigs all my life. I'm feeling it has to do with the throttle linkage. Not going down to low rpm and not allowing me to get to max rpm. It is supposed to rain stupid the next 3 days. So I'll read my kindle and look at youtube on throttle adjustments, etc. I'll fix it though.
In the meantime, I ordered a Selec shop manual for the Mercruiser.  It will show me the proper linkage adjustment procedure.
Another issue we have is the starboard fishwell is filling with water.  The outlet drain goes thru a pump and it works to empty it fine.  The scuppers on that side are old and don’t seal.  They can be taken out and reversed.  I’ll try that.  If that doesn’t work I’ll try to locate new ones.

Something just drives me bonkers about inboards. My Crestliner Phantom was such a PITA and it makes no sense, it was no more than a Volvo D240 sedan motor. Very simple and as reliable as the sun. But I could never get it to run just right. Then you have outboards which are so frickin' complicated it's like you need a wizards hat to work on them. But they seem to run more consistent and reliably. At least my experience.

You'll get it all figured out, for sure. Just the learning curve of the new vessel!

This 4.3 Mercruiser is very familiar to me Geoff.
My 24’ Trophy that I had in the early 90’s had the same power plant.
It was a pig in that larger sister of the 21’ rig I now own but that’s why I know this boat will do 45 mph.
The 4.3 (carbed version - not efi) is a very reliable motor and you simply cannot beat a Mercruiser outdrive.
Yup, I’ll figure it out.

Dealer fixed the problem.
It was linkage.

They also found out why my trim tabs don't work.

I effed up - when I mounted the onboard battery charger in the cuddy I drilled thru the control board on the opposite side of the wall.
Ouch!
$200 for a new board but they will install for free.

dumba$$   ::)

You would think I should know better by now.  lol

Anyway, I get the boat back for some fishing this holiday weekend.
It then goes back there next week for that board and some slides on the bunks to make it go on and come off the trailer easier.
I was going to do the slides myself but it involves yanking the boat for a bit while I do the work.
They have the lift there or can use their launch.

Also getting full canvass for it too.   ;D

Goes back to the shop tomorrow.

I know...........blah blah blah..............

Canvas, the new trim tabs control board, and I'm having slides installed onto the bunks to allow the boat to come off, but more importantly, go back onto the trailer easier.
Our private launch ramp at our place on Erie, although private and never really crowded, is not the best launch ramp in the world.
The concrete portion only extends (maybe) 2-3 feet into the water.
So we have to back the truck WAY intro the water to retrieve the boat.
When the water is in the 70's in the summer typically not a problem asking Jeff to walk in and crank it up.
But earlier in the season, when the water is really cold, we need waders.
Sux!
Guys with roller trailers don't have to go in so deep
Cranking the boat up is way easier on rollers than bunk trailers.
My little Lund was on the edge of requiring getting wet.
This larger, and heavier, 21' Trophy requires the rear wheels of the truck to get wet for crying out loud.
I thought about a power winch, but the hand winch is 2 speed and we can winch it up but it's really a struggle and I'm afraid of ripping out the bow eye from the boat.
We don't allow power loading as it tears up the launch area and the payloader has enough problems keep the launch cleared.
I see some guys power loading and keep my mouth shut.
I know.........shocking!!!  Me keep my mouth shut.

I seriously doubt the boat will be done by the weekend.
We'll see, but I'm not planning on it.

I know what you mean about shallow launches. Some I have here where my exhaust is underwater. Had no idea a truck could run with the exhaust pipe underwater, but it certainly can, at least for 5 minutes!

I also put bunk slicks on last year, they seem to help somewhat. I mostly didn't want the carpet because of the salt on my aluminum hull.

Thanks for the input Geoff.
I go get the boat from the canvas guy in an hour or so.
Here’s a few pics of the new canvas the guy took.

The bunk slides and new trim tab control board go in next week.

Sooooo.....
After waiting 2 weeks for the boat (again), I showed up there Friday afternoon to pick it up to bring it out here to the lake place.
They only had one more trailer bunk to wrap.  I asked to see it.
They were rewrapping the bunks with CARPET!!!
I wanted bunk slides!!
Plastic ABS slippery slides to ease boat loading.
I lost it.
2 weeks only to find out I now had to wait again.
This summer has basically been a bust with the boat.  It’s almost time to winterize it and put it into storage.

Crap!!

Well......I just flushed both motors with pink antifreeze.

Maybe do the lower unit grease in an hour or so if the concrete dries so I don't have to lay in a puddle.
Otherwise tomorrow or Wednesday I'll do it.

Still work to be done but I have decided to go ahead and winterize.
Wish the main motor was an outboard instead of an I/O.
It would allow me to push things a month or more.
Just not worth it for me as this point.
I have worked on them winterizing with the snow flying and it takes all the fun out of things.
A nice large heated pole barn would be even better.

Still more work to do to it but at least I can fish with it now.

Mounted my new (music) radio today, utilizing the nice weather.
Next week the electric winch is supposed to show up.
I’ll get her into storage in the next couple weeks or so.
My Lund fit in the garage.
Made it nice to do work on it.
This one would need a pole barn.

Mounted the new electric winch this afternoon.
Bought a 750 CCA deep cycle for it at Samsclub and it powers it without issues.
I will leave the battery on a Battery Tender under the bench in the garage this winter.
The battery tray got it's 2nd coat of black paint today and there's 3 coats of good primer on it before I started laying down the black.
I'll put at least one more coat on - I'll use the can up and add a 4th if there's enough.
The boat goes into the storage facility tomorrow.
Tonight I ran the pumps and emptied the rain water out of the 2 fish boxes - they always fill.
Then dumped a gallon of pink stuff in each and ran that thru the pumps and out.
She's ready to go away for the winter.

C-ME called today about the Ulterra.
It appears that Minn Kota is waiting for a specific part they have had troubles getting.
A part that's used on all Ulterra's.
They are now saying they expect the parts in mid to late November.
So maybe the Ulterra will arrive in December at C-ME.
That's ok.
I'll het it mounted in the spring when I pull it out the end of March or early April depending on the weather.

The Minn Kota Ulterra came in today so I went down and picked it up.
That beast is heavy!!!
Now it sits in the garage till I pull the boat out of storage next March or April.

Jeff is still negotiating with the guy in China on the lithium iron deep cycle battery and charger.
36 volt 150AH unit with a 30amp charger.
Nice battery for sure and it should give us plenty of time on the water between charges I'm hoping.
Weight is only about 122 lbs vs almost 300 lbs if we went with lead acid.
And the space reduction is rediculous.
Only slightly larger than a series 31 battery.
If what they are saying is true, we should get 15+ yrs out of it.
I'll probably be dead before the battery dies.

Updates on this thread?

how did you mount the battery for your electric winch? I have a new truck and the harness for my winch went with it. I have new wire/harness, but I am considering going your route and not using the truck battery, and mounting a deep cycle to the trailer. Just wondering what you did for a mount.

The battery... you got me seriously jealous here. In the other thread you say it's a 200ah battery. You getting this from Jeff at Amped Outdoors? How much is something like that? He only shows a 100ah 36v battery on his site. It's going to be crazy more efficient than lead acids and also more amp hours by FAR. I NEED IT

Geoff -

The boat is at my buddy's machine shop having the kicker bracket reinforced for trailering and also the Ulterra install.
I should get it back late this week or early next week.
Bug me if I don't post photos for you.

Here is what I used to mount the battery to the trialer tongue -

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KTG3M6O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KTG3M6O/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

I bought the LiFePo4 battery and chargers here -

https://www.lithium-battery-factory.com/product/36v-200ah-lithium-rv-batteries/#body_sele (https://www.lithium-battery-factory.com/product/36v-200ah-lithium-rv-batteries/#body_sele)

Also comes with a bluetooth BMS that workjs thru an app on my smartphone so I can see status when using and/or charging

Total was like $2600 which included Paypal charges, shipping, the battery, and the 3 chargers.

Guy there is Carl Wu
Here is his email addy - [email protected]
He is very nice and helpful.
Responds quickly and "somewhat" open to negotiating final price.
I got him to cut the Paypal chages in half and throw in the bluetooth.
But be advised that his prices are far lower than the rest and he knows it.
I am on a FB lithium battery group and he is one of two people they all rave about.
I was really worried about sending all this cash to China for something that will take 2-3 months to get.
But so far...........
Of course I'm still waiting for the battery.

Just boaught the 2 new starting batteries for the boat.
One of the old ones was shot and the 2nd was suspect, so we decided to get 2 new ones.
I have been waiting patiently for them to go on sale at Samsclub, as they do each spring.
They are $79/each and typically go on sale for $20 off.
Couldn't wait any longer as I'm supposed to get the boat back from my buddy's machine shop in the next couple days so we went and bought them today.
You watch.
Tomorrow they will go on sale.

$79 isn't that bad anyway. Is it a 24v starter? Or you just get two and wire them parallel?

Oh that makes sense, it's got a cabin.

Pretty much all my boats over the years I’ve installed a backup battery.  Using them 10-20 miles offshore in the Great Lakes makes this a good idea.  My Lund didn’t really have the room but I had 4 deep storage for the Terrova that I could always grab one if I needed.  I carry jumper wires in my boats too.  So I wouldn’t have needed to “physically” swap the batteries.

I'm thinking it will be moved foreward a bit to get the prop in front of that vertical bow rail on the right.
Especially becuase
I bought a 3 blade aftermarket prop for it that is oversized.

more pics of the Ulterra.
You can see that he powder coated the plate.
Also pics of the new plate he added between the transom and the kicker bracket and the trailering straps I had him fabricate.
The straps secure the motor from bouncing while trailering down the highway.
I have seen 2 of these same brackets let loose and it isn't a pretty sight.
The old plate on the transom was thin and flexing.
Also, the 5200 sealant was cracking and he only had large washers on the backside.
I had my buddy install a thick plate same size as the outside plate inside for more strength.
He used two full calkgun tubes of 5200 for everything.
Not cheap stuff, but the right way to do it.

The mount looks great Mac. Do I see that you modified the safety rail to be quick release when you are using the Ulterra?

I'm happy that I don't have to use a kicker bracket and it can mount directly to the transom, but that looks like it will stand some bumps and potholes.

Now I see how you have your winch battery mounted. I don't have nearly enough room on my trailer tongue to do the same thing but I'm going to try to modify something.

That is why I took it to my buddy Charlie.
It wasn't cheap, but it was less money than if I went elsewhere.
In the old days, I had access to the equipment at work to do it all myself.
He was my least expensive but best solution.
I knew it would be done perfect.
His white powdercoating of the Ulterra mount to match the boat's gelcoat was like a cherry on the sundae.
Title: Re: My new (old) boat

Planning a boat-work day Saturday.
I have a lot of odds and ends to complete.
I want to get things finished so we can use the boat with a clean conscience.
Of course the work never ends, but that is ok as I always like working on my boats.

The AM/FM radio is mounted, but no power, antena, or speakers are mounted or wired to it yet.
I have 4 new radial tires with new rims all mounted and balanced that need installing on the trailer.
The tires currently on it are 4ply bias plies and 3 are cracking.
The new radials are 6ply and I will keep the 1 non-cracking tire for my spare.
Also do the wheelbearings and replace the seals when I pull the old tires.
And while I have it all apart I will check the brake shoes.
They don't feel that good when stopping and I sense they are original.
I will go thru them freeing things up and lubing things that need it.
Probably just go ahead and change the shoes anyway as they are cheap insurance.
I bought a cigarette lighter accesory plug for cell ophone charging etc.
Also a 2-bank USB charger plug.
Both of those need installing.
I'm also going to yank the 2-bank Minn Kota on board charger and replace it with my 3-bank.
The 3rd bank I will route to the trailer winch battery.
That will need a plug and recepticle that I bought to get this 12VDC thru the hull.
I will make a short patch cord to get it from there down to the battery when needed.
I also have to respool my downriggers with cable.
Last week's cannonball drop to the lake floor convinced me to do this on both.
I also have to ge the Ulterra power wiring thru the cuddy bulkead and inside to be ready to connect ot the new 36volt battery coming from China if and when it ever arrives.
The new windshield wiper needs installing - simple job.
I have 4 noew deck scuppers to install too.
With the scuppers, I need to install water seal in the grooves of the fish box covers.  When it rains, they fill and it's a pain pumping them out constantly.
Cheap fix but gotta be done.
I also have to check my one HDS8.
It froze up last week and stopped reading the Navionics map card.
It's the one I bought used and I don't the firmware was ever kept up to date.
Easy check and fix.
Lastly, I have toi yank the new winch rope.
It's too long at 100' and fills the spool way too much.
Causes itself to pull down into the coils on the winch not allowing for a firm pull on the boat.
So it loosens up when towing.
I'll shorten it to like 25-30'.
Should fix the problem.
I'm sure there's more things to be done.
And I probably won't get this list finished Saturday.
But I'll give it a shot......and hope the rain they are calling for on Sunday doesn't show.

Didn't get as much done yesterday as we planned.
Always works that way.
We made progress however.
Today is day 2.
Won't finish.
Way too much to do.
I hope to get those wheel bearing repacked with new seals however and the new tires mounted and brakes checked.
If that gets done and nothing else I will be happy.
That is the largest job and I hate packing wheel bearings.
But don't trust anyone else to do them for me......except my two sons as they learned from me, and I from my dad.
Jeff said it best yesterday.
"Better to do the right in the driveway, than a second time on the highway."
He's learning!

Actually, no, you say so......or more accurately, you don’t say so.

You, like me, and many others here, pretty much post about everything you do.  And I’ve only read a few posts about your boat over the years.

Just working with the statistics.

Besides, you go out in yours once or twice a year for an hour or two.  When we go out, it’s typically a 6-10 hr foray.

Again, statistics.
Just looking at the numbers.

Yea, me too.

Won’t happen for a few weeks
I have some work to finish at the lake place before I can play.  Besides, the walleye really don’t kick in until June but you need to travel to the windmills to get them.  July out by us.

I’ll still test it all sooner.
And we have a week fishing trip with the boat out in the Western Basin in late June.

Making progress.
Still have to
Mount and wire the stereo speakers.
Run Minn Kota puck’s power wire thru the bulkhead and seal it
Run power to the stereo
Clean up all cabin wiring - looms and zip ties
Extend the Min Kota power leads.
Getting really close.

Edit - and have to fish the TrollMaster cable from helm to stern

Your late! I've been letting Rhonda (that's what we've named the Ulterra) drive for three weekends now!

I hate marine electrics. Get 'er done!! The fish are biting... ;D

What are you using for a trolling motor plug? After torching a $75 Marinco in a single season, I've ordered a Deltran Battery Tender 70 amp plug. It was the best I could find, we'll see...

Title: Re: My new (old) boat
Post by: Mac Attack on Apr 25, 2021, 01:59 PM
No plug.
The trolling motor wuill never come off.
It's bolted on and we did something to lock it in place to avoid theft.
I ran the power cables thru a bulhead fitting into the cuddy.
Will then lengthen them as needed once we get that battery down into the cuddy.
I have a Minn Kota 60A breaker switch to go between the leeds and the battery too for protection.
I can also use it as a disconnect switch.

We got the Minn Kota compass puck wired into the cuddy through the bulkhead.
Also got it and all the remaining wire passthru's sealed with 5200.

Layed out the TrollMaster cable and decided to hold off.
We want to order a special passthru for the cable and some special wire loom to make it look decent.
(we almost went ahead anyway - but decided to do it correct)
So I just oreder things along with 2 day delivery.
I'm traveling tomnorrow and Tuesday.
I'll take the boat into work on Wednesday so we can use the fork truck to load this new lithium battery into it.
I just realized it's heavier than I originally planned.
I thought it was going to be 100-120 lbs.
It's going to be close to 160 lbs.

So it won't be going to Florida with me winters.
No way will I be able to move it around by myself.
I'll get another for down there.
I have another year to worry about that.

So we should be able to test this Ulterra Wednesday night here at the house.

Still have that stereo radio and speakers to finish.
It began raining again here and we said screw it.
I can do that out at the lake anytime.
Good fill in work that doesn't need to happen right now.

Geoff - I have a question.
The compass puck.
Did you mount yours?
Did it make a difference.
I have Lowrance, so cannot connect the Ulterra to it.
Is there really a benefit getting it to connect to the Ulterra and then calibrate it according to the instructions.
Still unsure what it does unless it's connected to a Hummingbird unit.
Does it make the uatopilot or spotlock more accurate?

I mounted the puck when I did the initial install, so I have no idea how it would be without it. My previous experience was with Powerdrive trolling motors with no copilot or anything. The Ulterra is insanely accurate how it is now, that I can say. I can't believe how accurate the spot lock is.

I got a Helix 9 to use with it, having the controls on the head unit is great, and with it I can do follow the contour which you won't be able to do without a HB headunit. Don't know if the puck helps with that feature which obviously won't matter to you. Sorry but I can't help with how important it is. Mine is wired to the same circuit that my fishfinder is on, which is a switched/fused at the helm circuit. I was worried about it having parasitic drain on my house battery, so it's downwards of the fish fish finder switch.

Going to SamsClub in a bit to buy 3 lead acid Series 31 deep storage batteries for $99/each.
Will use these to get by until either FedEx finds the battery or the manufacturer can build us another and get it to us.
Becuase these will only give us 100ah, we will only use it when setting rods and things, and fighting/landing fish.
This will give us the autopilot and conserve on the batteries.
Most of the time we simply troll with the kicker.

Twice I paid for overnight Fedex shipping of trout eggs from Utah and twice they were late. The second time I got smart and got with the hatchery and we demanded a refund as they did not fulfill their end of the bargain. I got the shipping back which I think was about $180.00. This was pre Covid. The eggs were only $30.00!

All the shippers are not reliable right now. Don't even get me started on the Post Office which at one time could get my frozen fish to anywhere in the U.S. including Hawaii in 3 days Priorty Mail for half of what UPS charged.

I saw on the news the new Postmaster General is holding trucks until they are full to increase efficiency. Unfortunately that is delaying shipping.

Nope - hold off Geoff, and thanks bud.

I bought 3 deep cycle LA batteries for $99/each at Samsclub Saturday morning.
I will use them in the meantime.

Jeff got a call earlier today from a guy at FedEx.
He basically said it's lost and there's nothing they can do anymore.
He said the shipper needs to file a claim and go after FedEx for whatever.
So we will have the manufacturer build us another batter.
The three LA batteries will get us thru till the next one gets here, if and when it does.

Yeah, we get mail about every 3 days now. Still, there’s companies out there that ship on time and on schedule. A couple I buy craft supplies from are regular as ever. 3 days from Utah...no problem.

If you order anything out of country, you may as well go to the casino and play the slot machines.

Yea, we are working with the manufacturer now on getting another battery built, electrically balanced, and shipped.
Not sure when that will ship and then get here.
We have a fishing trip scheduled for the Western Basin of Erie in late June we are hoping it will be here for that.
I have doubts.
The LA batteries will work for now, but we will not be able to use them constantly.
Hence, the reason I asked for the amp draw on yours.
Jeff and I will measure ours to get a handle on amp consumption so we don't drain them while out and are forced to do a manual stow of the Ulterra.
I'm not to happy with FedEx right now.
They told Jeff yesterday they simply don't know where the shipment is.
The GPS tracked the railcar it was supposed to be on but they don't feel it even made it onto the car.

Never a problem.
Only takes more time.
Especially when it is something that cannot come by plane, like the lithium in these batteries.

And in this case it was the US freight company FedEx Freight that lost it.
It came to the US and passed through customs fine.
It got lost here in the US by FedEx Freight.

Well I'd be interested in what you come up with. I am seeing dramatically lower run times on my lead acid batts than I was a year ago. I'd guess I have 30-40 recharge cycles on my batteries since buying them about this time last year. I treated them really well, they came off the boat and were stored indoors and on battery tenders. Make sure to charge them ASAP after getting off the water. I thought I'd get 3 years with them, it just seems I am deep discharging more than I thought. I may need to upgrade to lithium earlier than I originally thought. Just wondering if I can get away with a 60ah 36v battery.

Yea Geoff.
I have read that 200 charges is about it on LA batteries.
Lithiums get 4000-6000 charges.
And, you can totally discharge the lithium without damaging it.
I know they are big bucks, but LA batteries actually cost way more if you really do an honest comparison.

I never liked trolling. Seemed a waste of time and energy. But, I did it because he was my fishing mentor. Taught me to catch perch and many other species. Where to go, when to go and how to fish.

We did every tournament on Lake O. and Seneca for more years than I can count. I miss him....don’t miss trolling that way.

Title: Re: My new (old) boat
Post by: Mac Attack on May 23, 2021, 08:49 AM
Yea, it’s a kipawa
Nothing to compare it to as I never installed the stock prop.
It’s supposedly a better prop for more low end thrust and control.
But the reports show it generated more current (heat) at top end and then fries the control board.
Minn Kota won’t cover the warranty when using the kipawa.
So most guys swap back over to the stock prop when they take it in.
I’m never going to use mine at top end.  More than likely never be over the 5 or 6 setting.

Well, the boat came off the trailer when I was hauling it out.  The winch strap broke and we didn’t have the safety chain attached at this point.
Luckily, the rear of the trailer was still over water.
We got a little dock rash that I can buff out.  Haven’t had the balls to crawl under it yet and inspect the hull.  Tomorrow morning.
The lower unit and kicker were both raised so they and prop survived without a scratch.
Scary and coulda been real bad.
Of course I still haven’t inspected the hull yet.

I just closed my eyes when I saw it happening in the rear view mirror.
Because like you Bob, I’ve seen it happen lots of times.  Even helped guys get theirs back onto the trailer (from the concrete).

Luckily, my trailer tail’s end was still over the water a little and I stopped moving forward immediately.  I have super slides on the bunks so it simply slid back off the trailer into the water.

However, it is shallow and there is the concrete ramp that extends out into the water a bit.  This is what I was worried about.  The hull grinding itself on that concrete.

I went out there earlier and used an old rug to crawl around under it.  Things look fine.  I really dodged a bullet.

Now to fix that effin winch.
Another saga to be told in a few days.
(This was my 4th winch rope/cable/strap)

Yea, I prefer roller trailers, most don’t.
They don’t for this very reason.
But our launch ramp here at the camp is not a good ramp.
Not enough concrete into the water and not steep enough, requiring you to either winch a lot or back things into to water far enough which means the rear tires of the tow vehicle is in the water and you have to wade in to crank and hook.

Extended the planer board masts 19” higher today.
Also installed two 15 degree rod holders.
These are typically used for dipsey rods but we will use them for outriggers.
So if anyone out there has a lead on a decent set of used outriggers please let me know.
Thanks

Glad there no damage to the boat……HOOK THE d**n SAFETY CHAIN NEXT TIME.

Saw one launched pretty much in the parking lot at Oneida one day. It dropped high and dry on the ramp. Roller trailer….no chain….no strap. Tore it up pretty bad.

I’ve got a few good launch stories that I own.

I took a guy fishing on the canal  ( something I never….never…never do anymore) and dropped the boat in….like I’ve done a thousand times. He was supposed to unhook the bow rope. I saw the boat floating out and pulled the truck up……..dragging the boat 8’ onto the concrete ramp.

We wrangled it back into the water and never went fishing together again.

You gotta be kidding me Mac! I would have freaked out. I've never had a roller trailer but my buddy does. I'm usually jealous of how he doesn't have to back so far in to launch or retrieve. With my bunk setup and a long boat I learned that the truck can run just fine with the exhaust pipe completely under the water :o I've launched places where there was 15 feet of water forward of the front wheels!

Yea, back in the early 80's I remember launching at Sylvan Beach on Onieda Lake from the beach.
I was probably 100' out from shore with my truck before the boat would float.
lol

Was even crazier loading the boat back onto the trailer.

This new Drotto latch should solve my problems without needing to power load.

I got the Drotto mounted.
Adjusted things the best I could yesterday.
Donna and I took it down to the launch and tested it.
Didn’t work so good.
Actually, didn’t work at all.
Our ramp is VERY shallow and because of that you need to back a long way into the water to get your boat to float.
I need to see if I can lower the boat on the trailer.
Even an inch would help.
I wish I had a roller trailer.

On a good note, the new LiFePo4 battery works awesome.

I'm surprised that boat is on a bunk trailer. Rollers would work great for that hull.

Great to hear the battery is going good. Alls well that ends well!

I’ll get things sorted out Geoff.
I’m going to install a new poly rope on my winch.  That, along with the Drotto should work.
Like I said, our launch here is very shallow.  It’s ours and nice to have to ourselves, but we need to accept the bad with the good.  Smaller aluminum boats are fine.  Bigger heavy glass boats like mine are tough.  We make it work.

Yea, the battery is going to be sweet.
Can’t wait to go out and put it through its paces.

I know this sounds nuts, but I’m going to sell the boat in the spring.  It’s in winter storage right now.
The only reason I’m posting this is to give people here the first shot at it.
I have about $30k into it and the details on everything are here in this thread.  Nothing will be pulled off.
Other than my rods and lures.
I’m going to ask $26k for it and it’s worth every penny.  Most of you know me and can vouch for how I treat and take care of my boats.  Please don’t low ball me!!
I’ll only get mad and come and kill your dog.  😎
If you want it now, let me know soon because the storage facility is only open for the next 2-3 wks.  After that, it stays in storage until we get back from Florida in late April at the earliest.

Please don’t make this thread crazy.

If you have questions or comments please PM me.

Thanks.

It does sound nuts, but I've done the same thing. Completely rebuilt the yellow Duraboat, used it a few times and got 2' itis. Bought my Rebel just before you decided to sell yours. I would have snapped up your old Rebel fast. The used boat market is crazy right now, it will move fast Mac!

What????

You looking at a 40’ trawler now?

You aware that there’s a vaccine to prevent “Twofootitis”. Got my shot 32 years ago. Still have the same 14’. It must have worked.

I'm sticking with my 14 1/2 foot Starcraft 'cause the lakes aren't big enough around here to justify a bigger boat and other than Erie, Lake Michigan really isn't that great fishing anymore to justify investing in a boat just to go out on the big lakes.

I bought this Hobie kayak a couple of years ago for half price because it was a showroom model. Tricked it all out complete with downrigger, fish finder, DIY stabilizers, anchors etc. but am considering selling it.  It's a b***h to get in and out at my age. And after a couple of hours my back is sore.

Went to the storage facility and hugged my boat today.
Actually, I had forgotten to winterize the washdown pump.
So I went and pulled the hose from it and drained the water out of it.
I left the hose off for the winter.
I have never winterized the washdown pump in any of my previous boats.
But I figured it would be easy enough to do on this one as it is right there in the motor area and simple to get at.

I spent some time looking over reciepts, Amazon records, and then I updated my spreadsheet detailing what I have into the boat.
I found that my original number was off a little.
I actually only have about $27k into the boat.
So I'll probably be asking about $23-24k in the spring.
I'm on the Trophy board over on FB and see a few same as mine actually selling higher in some other higher market areas of the country.
Gotta do your research when trying to sell a boat or vehicle.

She is in storage, and WAY in the back of the facility.
So there is no getting her out till at least April anyway.

Yup Geoff.
We sold our place on Lake Erie.
My son Jeff is in the process of buying our house.
The boat is next.
But not until we get back from Florida the end of April when I pull it out of storage.

Things simply got out of hand, and we decided to simplify.
That's it in a nutshell.

The Trophy isn't the boat we want for Florida............so it goes!

Whoever buys it will get a great rig for sure.

Going to get it out of storage.
Then replace the trailer brakes.
Then it goes to anchor Marine to get sold.

If anyone is interested - $24k is what I'll accept (if I don't have to take it there).

It will be heading to Anchor next weekend.

SOLD!

Let me just say that if you were interested and snoozed on this rig, you major league screwed up.
I let it go for far less than hoped.
And FAR less than I had invested into it.

Last year I'm sure I could have gotten more for it than I did.
It was "acceptable", but not what I wanted.

We got a few low ball offers that I quickly rejected.
This recent offer was credible, and we are very close to moving south.
Even though my buddy could have handled the sale with me down in florida, we both felt it best to take the "bird in hand".
The money is in my bank account, so now I move on.

Next I need to sell the motorhome, to make room for the boat I will buy in Florida.

Baby steps.   8)
