I put a bunch of rocks in mine. Brought it in and cleaned it today amazing that algae will grow in these temps. Not to mention that birds are indiscriminate shitters.

They do use it every day all day long.

Snowing and blowing out there but just had a big flock of redwing blackbirds in the trees and on the feeders .
Title: Re: The Flock
Post by: rgfixit on Feb 25, 2022, 12:51 PM
Yeah, my flock is draining the feeders at a breakneck pace. We get the redwings and tricolors in the early spring. But seed really isn’t their main feed. They disappear when the cattails start getting green.

The good news is that I’ve been designated not only the supplier of, but caretaker of all the new bird houses we’re adding to the golf course this year. 217 acres of bird habitat to play with. The super is set on being an Audubon Society approved course  and I’m all in!

I really Like this guy.
I can tend the bird houses way after I’m too old to mow any more.

You better get started building. ;)
Title: Re: The Flock
Post by: rgfixit on Feb 25, 2022, 02:44 PM
I’ve got a dozen or so houses in storage. I was gonna sell some at market last year but, a nice lady across from my space was selling bird houses and I didn’t want to compete. Just a courtesy really. She was really nice and bought some of my toys.

So, I think they’ll be donated to the cause.

Our flock this afternoon.

The rest are in the lilac bush. They take turns. It’s pretty comical.

That's a lot of blackbirds, I saw our first red wing the other day. Finches dominate our feeders all winter. The goldfinches are starting to change color.

Yup they will be bright yellow soon.
We used to call them flying dandelions when way back in the day.
Long story short we were going down a dirt road and one of the girls said look at all the pretty dandelions along the side of the road.  Until we got close and they took flight.. ;D

 I’ve got starlings 🙄
Title: Re: The Flock
Post by: rgfixit on Feb 26, 2022, 08:46 AM
Yeah, stupid starlings. I had to stop putting out meal worms for the bluebirds. They’d clean out the feeder in an hour. They can’t eat the black oil sunflower seeds. So that’s pretty much all I feed.
Title: Re: The Flock
Post by: Raquettedacker on Feb 26, 2022, 09:19 AM
No starlings here.  Lots of stupid squirrels, gray and red, lots of blue jays, cardinals, junkos, titmouce, chickadees and lots of woodpeckers. Have had 3 different kinds of peckers out there at once…

Title: Re: The Flock
Post by: rgfixit on Mar 05, 2022, 01:29 PM
That’s exactly right Dom. Less than half the cost of a Peterson style box.  Just 1, 42” piece of 1x6 and They actually recommend a 2x10 roof for better insulation from the suns. Thought that was interesting. I used a 5/4 stair tread cutoff my neighbor gave me.

I might try some PVC pipe houses for other birds. We’ve got a ton of it laying around outside the shop. I think they’d work ok in shaded areas around the course. We’re going to pit out a bunch of houses. They’ll be numbered and mapped  and a maintenance/activity log will be kept.

The goal is to obtain an Audubon Certification in the coming years. This is just the start.

That's a nice build RG, I wanted to put some in back of my house and was thinking I could build them, as I'm not entirely "all thumbs."

I found this eastern screech owl, taking a nap in a tree hole today, while I was going for a walk.

Pretty straight forward Bart.

The wife and I took the grandkids to the Mt. Morris dam this afternoon so they could use the playground. The vultures are back for sure. We counted 32 flying over the dam
The sky was thick with them. There was a big flock of robins in the yard when we got home.

We’ve uncovered a dozen or so bird houses in our reorganizing at the club. I’m going to start refurbishing them and giving them a coat of a solid body exterior stain. ( happen to have a gallon). Also discovered a good sized pile of fence post stakes. I’ll be numbering them, scoping out locations and setting up a log book for maintenance in the next week.

I’m really pleased that the new Super is all in on this idea. I’m even more happy that it’ll be my responsibility. What a great job for an old fart like me. Mow greens and take care of my feathered friends.

An endoscope. 4” color display with dimmable LEDs, forward and side cameras. Takes pictures and video. USB rechargeable, came with a 32 gig micro sd card. It has a 16’ semi rigid cable.

Now I can peek in the houses and nests without opening the boxes or using a mirror on a pole. Going out this afternoon to record gps coordinates, box heights, habitat and such to start submitting data to Cornell.

Gotta figure ours how to format it to take jpeg rather that avi photos and videos. My iPad and iPhone don’t support avi. Pretty sure my boss at the club will be able to help me with that. He’s really good with computers.

I’ve been given the go ahead to start building the first purple Martin house for the course. It’s going to be a T-14 style house similar to this.

(https://i.postimg.cc/f3Y3mMGV/BC90873-F-97-F4-40-AC-892-B-A485-BBD88338.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/f3Y3mMGV)

We’ll be using a 2” ID steel tube about 20’ long. It’ll have a winch mechanism to raise and lower it. There used to be a few scattered around the course. I’ll be really happy to see them up again.

And I get to tend them👍

So …the past few days I’ve been observing the osprey building a nest at Lock 30 in Macedon.

Today there was yet another male trying his best to usurp the nest.

I’ve added this nest location to my Nestwatch portfolio.
So very cool to see.

Now, if I can only find the Bald Eagle nest location…..

Well, the power company ( I assume) destroyed the nest and placed two orange cones atop the pole. I would have preferred they place a platform on top to help them rather than evict them.

Even left the pile of branches and sticks at the base of the pole. Stinks! Would have been a joy to watch and a nice addition to my Nestwatch Project.

We had a cow bird deposit an egg in a nuthatch nest at one of our offices in NH. When they hatched there was 4 or 5 baby nuhatches and 1 cow bird  chick. The cow bird chick was at least 4 or 5 times the size of the nuthatches. The mom nuthatch was very busy trying to feed the cow bird chick.

We named the cow bird chick MONGO after Alex Karras in Blazing Saddles

They’re all over the course.
don't you just love flinging goose crap all over with the mower tires?

I've heard of birdies and eagles on the golf course but that's ridiculous.

I was at the Plattsburgh Boat basin yesterday and there's a bunch of geese just hanging around with assorted sea gulls and a guy pulls up in a car and unloads 2 loaves of bread and a full bag a popcorn on them and there's bird mayhem for 15 minutes. No wonder they don't want to migrate.

Tell you what I don’t love is whipping goose crap off greens so I can mow. They camp out on our putting green (about 9000sq. Ft.) and the two closing greens at the club house. Both over 7000 sq ft.

Worst part is now they’re molting and can’t fly. So they and their unbelievable broods spend all their time on the fairways and  greens and even sitting in the bunkers.

I’ve told several golfers they can deduct 2 strokes for each goose they hit.

One good thing is the foxes are well fed.

I was throwing away hanging baskets today and almost dumped a cow bird chick whose mother dropped an egg in a robins nest.

Yeah, I need to charge up my cam and get it out. Birds haven’t forum our feeders as yet. Put them out Sunday. Just a couple goldfinches so far. Squirrels found the seed on the ground from a couple windy days. They haven’t worked out how to get up there yet, but they will eventually.

We have an osprey that has a nest in the front yard tree.
The chicks are gone now since the storm, but the osprey still returns here and there.
I will ask donna to snap a few picks with her camera.

Well, that’s Fred……
But the neighborhood flock found our feeders this morning. They were out in force which will be the case for the rest of the winter.

On another note the price of a 50 lb bag of black oil seed went from $19 two years ago to $32 this year. Can’t say what mealworms for the bluebirds will cost. Probably need a second mortgage.

Just got a 2 lb bag of meal worms for our bluebirds. $32…..and that was cheap….comparatively.

Still think I should be able to claim them as dependents on my taxes.

Spring is getting close here. I was at my daughter's yesterday waiting for the school bus. 55 degrees and sunny. There were several starlings on the roof and barns that were singing up a storm claiming their nest site. [ I've been noticing the birds singing at home in the mornings too. A couple pairs of ducks flew by, but the best show was the pair of Bald Eagles that circled and danced with each other for 20 minutes over her house. In my 70 years I have never seen such an open winter along with nature waking up early too. Hopefully the woodchuck blew the call and spring is just around the corner.

Here in Henrietta I had a big fat robin in my yard yesterday. And went to my camp Monday in Allegany co. and saw several dead skunks on the road skunks out and about is always a sign of spring
Title: Re: The Flock

Yeah, robins and dead skunks all over here. Robins are traveling with the starlings. Haven’t seen other early spring arrivals like red wings or white capped sparrows. Bluebirds aren’t interested in the nest box yet.

They may be a lot smarter than we are.

Took a ride today close to home, found two owls already in courtship mode and an eagle next door protecting its huge nest (probably from the owls). Also, the bluebirds are chasing each other around, was sitting in a batch of 30 or more dancing the other day. Last, I've never seen so many Canada Geese already in the Hudson River corridor.
