I have a small pond and a brook on my land (south west of concord) and we border about 350 acres of forest with a couple more ponds and a small river. All good breeding grounds for black flies.
Our friends the black flies have been light for the past coule of years, but, they have come in thick this year. They are out in swarms and thirsty so yard work and stream fishing makes you itchy.
I fish a couple lakes in my area and once you get about 30 yds from shore the flys thin out
How are the flies in your areas?
-
Brutal. I was getting swarmed last night with them while doing yardwork. I have wetlands near me too, about 15 minutes Northwest of Concord.
-
Same at my house but I’ll take it, they don’t seem to last long and there is nothing worse than mosquitos to me personally including ticks
-
Wow, already, huh. I figured every bug would come alive this weekend with the summer temps ahead. At least I might find some dry fly action.
-
I inhaled a few running an errand at lunch just now on the sea coast.

Lunch at 4? Tell em you need a raise :P
-
Yup…swarming hungry little bastards…they were feasting while doing yard work today…half hour north west of Conkid 😡
-
They are suffocating here
-
Havent hit me bad yet in Northwest CT but they will. I also get obliterated by the noseeums where my boat is slipped.
-
Weird we don't have them here in the midwest. You have to go quite a ways north to experience them. I wonder what's different that they don't thrive here?
But mosquitos and deer flies are a different story!

I've already picked 2 ticks off me this year. Got a feeling it's going to be a bad year for them.
-
I find the ticks are worst early in the spring and taper off by Memorial Day (unless I go walking under powerlines)
-
I was nearly carried off this morning. Mosquitos were also in the mix.
-
I was turkey hunting in NH and the black flies and mosquitoes were terrible. Also picked off about 6 ticks. Turkeys fell so I forgot all about it.

Thanks Frank! Yeah 1 season under its belt and the duck, goose and turkey population has significantly decreased in New England. 😄

I run a Benelli myself. Gotta love the inertia driven, she eats and never fails and points true
