hot water
« on: Jun 04, 2006, 12:40 PM »
i just bought a 1972 johnson outboard,6hp.
ran it yesterday and runs great.the one question i have
is the water coming out of the peehole is just dribbling
out and gets really hot.is this supposed to be that hot. you can only hold your hand
under it for about 6 seconds before it really gets  hot on your
hand.the guy i bought it off said he put a new water pump
and thermostat in it.it sat for about 10 years.any info
would be greatly apreciated.thanks and fish on.

Funny you bring this up now..there was just a thread on this a week or so ago...try running a wire (coat hanger is good) up the peehole...mud wasps and the like can build nests in there..try that and see if it works and flows better...Esox

I,m with Mac on this one, redo the waterpump and the stat. I would guess that the rubber impeller is dry and hard from sitting, or it even could have been assembled improperly. I had a buddy who blew his 25 horse Evinrude up after he improperly installed a water pump. I would definitely not run it anymore before you figure this out.

ok guys,here is the verdict.
but first thanks for the info.
i took the lower part of the motor apart just
to make sure none of the hoses were
plugged and nothing was.so i cleaned everything
and put it back together.the impeller looks pretty good.
i then took out the thermastat and ran the motor
without it in it.not a solid stream of water, but a lot
more than before.put therm.back in and seems to now
alright.will put a new one in.but the only thing is
i did not try it on the water.hopefully tommorow.i
will keep ya posted.again thanks for the info.also
water was not really hot.
