Cider - instead of filling the bucket with rocks, I find it's easier to just take the empty bucket and fill it with water once you get there. weighs about 40lbs when you fill it and it's quicker than gathering rocks

Good idea, until you get a decent fish on and in the commotion knock the bucket over in the canoe or get into swells and thar she blows!
Do you use a lid on the bucket to try to avoid any spills?

Yeah the bucket needs a lid. it also helps to have it on a slip proof surface to keep it from banging around and scaring the fish... i use one of those no-slip mats to keep it in place.
