4 wheeler registration question .
« on: Sep 06, 2006, 06:59 PM »
Do all 4 wheelers have to be registered now to take them on the ice or trails and private property ?
I have spoken to four people at two different d.m.v offices and got four different answers .
I don't care one way or the other I just want to be legal even if it does cost me a little money .
Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions .

It has to be registered unless it is on your own property. If you are on a lake icefishing or public trail it must be registered. I found out the hard way a few years ago while icefishing. The DEC always checks atv's for registrations.

1tigger,
Yes you need to register and insure your 4 wheeler if you plan on driving it any where but your own property. I took care of mine a few weeks ago. They are quick on the top of the hill ;), I was in and out in less than 10 minutes.  Basic minimum ins for the year was about $50. Much cheaper than a ticket. You don't need to have insurance to register it.

I have basic (absolute mininum) liabilty insurance thru state farm. It's $54. for the year. I may get a small discount due to mulitple policies, but it's usually a percentage off so I'm sure it's not that much of a discount.
BTW, I'm not sure if it's like a car, you know where someone driving a brand new vette will pay alot more than someone driving a 10 year old escort! My wheeler is a '96 sportsman, not a very aggresive machine. I'm sure age and driving record play in to the equation as well.
