Sort of sounds like a frogging rod for bass would work. A 7' heavy with a 7.1:1 reel w/ 30# PP.

Two birds with one stone?

There's a small parking lot along the the seawall off Water Street. You can park and launch from there or launch at Cashman Park.

Be careful on Joppas Flat!

What should I be looking out for? Is it a dangerous area?

I never yak it but I've been in a boat on JF where the current is sweeping. Avoid the mouth at all cost and if you go at night make sure you have an anchor light. Boats are always zooming by and it helps for boaters to see ahead.

Im guessing breakers?

Never been there. But thats the reason alot of Salt Yakers use Sit On Top yaks w/scuppers. So they can take a wave and they self drain.

I used to fish the Merrimack from my old 17' aluminum boat. I found the river to be much too busy and occasionally the mouth is much too dangerous. I don't bother with it anymore. :-\ There are places closer to home that I'm more comfortable with.

Be prepared to look for a second job to support the striper addiction... ;D

So will,
  I guess the question is...

When are we going to drive down and throw the kayaks in? I guess we can figure this out together.

Im not sure my yak can handle salt water. Its only a 10ft sit in. Im told you want atleast a 12ft and a sit on top.
Would be bad news if i took a wave in mine.

Ive been eyeing craigslist for a nice 12ft sit on top yak. Tarpon 120, Ride 115, or something similar.

I use to spend every day of the season on Joppa Flats guiding for stripers (out of a canoe, sometimes a kayak and then a Dory)... The first thing to watch out for when in a small craft out on Joppa, is the other boats.
You don't have much for rocks that you need to worry about (if you don't have a prop), but wind and current are the things to stay aware of.
The next is the boat ramp at the sea wall is great, but at 3-4 hour after high you will be dragging in your kayak to get back in and TAKE MY WORD ON IT, you don't want to be in that thigh high mud...
If you are new to fishing the area, stay out and away from the channel and stay on Joppa Flatts and you should have no problem... You can always hire a guide (some one like me) to show you the ropes and save you years of figuring it out yourself...
One more tip, the area is best fished morning, evening and night. You can catch fish during the day, but most of the time the numbers are very low...

At this point i think im ok with not catching as many, if its safer.
Atleast till i get a couple seasons of experience on the Salt.

This would be for when fishing out of my kayak of course.

If im out with someone who know what they are doing, thats a different story.

I good and affordable yak set up for stripers would be a ugly stick tiger stick and a Penn 6500ss reel try to get a used american made one.. this will last you forever and the reel to s easily repaired at most bait shops
