Outboard troubles
« on: Mar 18, 2013, 08:00 PM »
I have a 1997 Mercury 115hp outboard.  It misses when running at full speed.  It doesn't miss idling/midrange.  I changed the plugs numerous times, fuel filter is new, carbs are spotless.  I changed the gas and all the electrical connections that I could reach.  Has anyone had similar problems or know what could be causing this.  Thanks, Fishfighter

Try posting that here. The iboats forum was a huge help to me when I was having trouble with my motor last season.

You're welcome. Good luck. The warm water season is just around the corner.

After trying to troubleshoot and fix this problem myself, I ended up taking it to the Mercury mechanic who was also baffled.  Ended up being the prop that I put on it allowed the engine to hit the rev limiter and was causing it to miss (just barely hitting the rev limiter, not the typical sounding rev limiter miss sound).  Lesson learned, don't put on the cheap aftermarket prop, even though they claim to be the same size/pitch as the factory one.
