Keel Guard on a Lund
« on: Dec 25, 2016, 03:06 PM »
Anyone installed one on a Lund?
I own a 1650 Rebel XL.
Was wondering about the aluminum reinforcement rib that already runs the length of the keel and has the rivets in it.
Was wondering if the Keel Guard would install without a problem or if the reinforcement rib would create problems.
I have sent an email to Keel Guard asking them but thought I might also check here.
Thanks.

I have read a little about it, seems lots of cons to doing it to aluminum boats...Do you beach it? Or are you just looking for extra protection just in case?

I'm looking at taking it up north into Canada, where we do beach the boats.
The beaching is the reason I don't take my boat.
The boats at this place are Lunds, but they are small 16' tillers rigs.
Great boats for a typical fishing lodge.
But my Lund is WAY better.
Lots more room and 4 batteries on the bow mount Minn Kota, etc.
But the last thing I want to drag it up onto the rocks for shore lunch like we do with the lodge boats.

What are the cons that you have read?

Sounds like fun!  I have just read that they don't stick well, most sites I have read they recommend for Fiber Glass boats but not Aluminum.  Many sites say that the Lund keel is strong enough and wouldn't need it.  I have read a couple success stories.  If i was going to beach a lot and fish around those canadian rock laden waters I would probably look into the same.  Most fishing pages has conversations on this, I'm not sure if you have seen those.  In depth outdoors, iboats, walleye central...I hope you find something that works...post pics if you do!!!

Yup
I've read a lot of them
I'm currently investigating having that bed liner for pickups applied
That might work
Thanks

The Keel Guards are typically 5-6" wide and for a 16-17' boat they typically recommend one about 7-8' long.
So with the bed liner stuff I was figuring I could go wider, like maybe 12-18" wide.
I could also take it a little further back, like maybe a strip 12' long.

The stuff typically goes on rough, as it is designed as a non-skid surface.
But for this application I would like it smooth.
My boat only has a 60hp 4-stroke on it.
Fine for top end, but I've added so much gear and weight to the boat, it is a slug out of the hole.
So I don't need to be adding any more friction to the hull.

I'll keep you all posted on what I find out.
The plan later this week is to stop at a local place that installs this stuff and ask some question.
