First time fishing NY
« on: Sep 21, 2023, 09:02 AM »
Good morning everyone! I am on route to Northern NY (ogdensburg) from Rhode Island to help guide a group of veterans on a goose hunt with a non profit organization. I have NEVER traveled to this part of the state and I am wondering if there is anyone willing to shed some info on a potential spot to cast a line. Its just me as I am meeting the group up there. I have never fished in NY so i plan to get a day pass at basspro in Utica. I do not really plan to g noff route as I will only have about an hour to fish but i do see the black river running along my route North.

Im running west on Rt 90 to Utica,  then north on 12, 26, and finally 37. I will have my fly fishing gear and waders, as well as some spinning tackle for, trout, bass, or maybe even walleye as im seeing some potential in that river for them. (I dont have walleye in RI so this would be my number one option)

I will be leaving in 20 hours so any info would be appreciated. I can pick up whatever i need at basspro in Utica as well. Ill be checking here and my person message box.

Thank you in advance and I look forward to driving through this beautiful country!

I dont think ill have enough time to make the run for salmon. Im on an agenda with the Veterans. From morning prep, to teaching them how to lead a bird to calling, to morning prep, travel, game processing and dinner. Busy each day. Was hoping to hit something up on the way there.

Kudos to you for  giving your time to those who deserve it. Catching a fish on the way would be a bonus, but you’re doing a really great thing. There’s always other fish to be caught.
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Right in town there's a park (Morrisette) that abuts the river. As I remember, there's current there so you could throw tube jigs for smallies. There's also a town boat launch that has access to the river.

My son is up there fishing now (Clayton), it's a beautiful river.

Good luck.

Appreciate all of the love everyone! I didnt even get a chance to fish, instead i spent my free time hanging out with the fellas (vets) and getting to not only know them, but exchange numbers and built new friendships. Some photos from our outings.
