Massachusetts / Fast and Slow

I blitz-fished (ie., casting once or twice rather than a half dozen or more per spot to cover more water) the North Hoosic in North Adams,  from the roll dam (down from the Beaver Mill dam) to below the Eclipse Mill dam, between about 6:15 and 6:45 PM.

My approach yielded one 13" rainbow, which, while not huge, fought like a man possessed, and I released unharmed.

Then I walked back to my car and drove to Fish Pond (Windsor Lake), where at the very least I can generally count on catching a bunch of sunfish in a short time at this time of year.

But tonight the action there was surprisingly slow.

An hour and a half of steady fishing produced just two sunfish, although, to be fair, I did lose what looked like a really big perch.

On the plus side, another fisherman gave me his trout (a 15" rainbow that he would have released but accidentally bled while reeling it in) and I found a ball-jig lure impaled on a cattail.

(Although I rarely use lures, I certainly find enough during the course of my travels.  Half of my gear, from hooks and sinkers to lures, to the occasional rod and reel, seems to be stuff other folks have lost or abandoned).

Started out in the canal, no bueno. Made one drift from fish creek ro snug harbor, place was devoid of walleyes and boats. Hit the flats on the east end and picked up 2 shorts and 2 keepers that went back. Fish are there and scattered about, but not on the bite. In at 6 out at 11, be back this weekend. It's going to be a good year!

Im super interested in the deerfield and the millers.  Lets make something happen!

Nice work Pat.  Ive only fished that area once.  Theres some nice pools in the woods.  Lets connect for some night action in the coming weeks.

Drops like a rock up there.  Fish were in at most 3' of water so I always make a point to hit it shortly after stocking.  Will let ya know on a night mission.

Nice, the cripple flies can be deadly. Glad you guys got out there, I'm hoping to get on the water tomorrow.

Hope Vegas went well for you.

Fished the housy last night finally.  Flow was 1140.  Caught one really nice brown around 19"...by accident...top fly was skimming accross the surface when I went to make another cast.  Heard a splash, fish on.  Was surprised to have also hooked a tiny smallmouth.

After a week in Vegas and high water I hadn't been out in what feels like forever.  I also had the opportunity to get out last night in the MA section of the Farmy.  The first stop at a well marked pull off and stocking point was unsuccessful.  I moved further upstream to a calmer stretch of water and upon working that section noticed a bunch of rises.  I could see egg laying hendricksons all over the place and tied my best imitation on although a bit too big.  First cast a nice fish smoked it but I missed the hook set.  I left the pool to look for other risers but came back shortly after.  I put on a hendrickson cripple and after 4 more missed hooks sets I finally landed my first fish of the year on a dry.  It wasn't huge but fought like it was.

Nice work Jim.  I think the fish are settling in from stocking and the high water.
