Hornpout in the China area?
« on: Aug 13, 2012, 10:05 AM »
The little boys have decided they wanna go catch some hornpout. Can anybody suggest a place to take them to get some action in the china or surrounding areas? Thanks in advance.

In boat? From shore?

We used to fish for them after dark on Pattee's pond in Winslow back when I was a kid. You could try China in the Muldoon (northern tip upstream of the bridge and culverts), Dutton, Lovejoy, they all have bullheads / hornpout.

Best fishing for them is in the spring, around the spawn. They are schooled up moving into spawning grounds. Weeds haven’t come up yet....They taste best then too. Apple blossom time is about the peak. By mid- June they are on their beds. Should be able to catch em now just about anywhere they live though. Probably look for mud bottom where crayfish and the like are in good numbers.

Hope you find some decent ones. I like em at 10” for filleting. I had em just headed, gutted and skinned, then deep fried but prefer filleted.
