Title: Soon
Post by: Mac Attack on Apr 27, 2019, 03:45 PM
Well, Donna and I leave next Thursday for Florida.
We are taking 3 days to drive down.
A nice easy ride.
Then 2 weeks in Englewood on the Gulf coast.
Rented a condo on the beach pretty reasonable.
Then 3 weeks to drive back home.

Will start our house hunting while down there.
Not really ready to buy yet as we aren't planning to move there for 2 more years.
But might as well start looking.
We know what we want and where we want to be.

Just bought my one year saltwater non-resident fishing license.
I will surf fish pretty much every day while down there.
We are also going on a head boat at least once, however you don't need a fishing license for that.
My brother lives down there and he has a lot of friends with boats that fish so I'm sure I'll go out with a couple/few of them.
Also, we are going to rent a pontoon boat at least for one day - so I'll fish off that a bit.

Zoom!

Heading out in a few minutes to rent a pontoon boat for the day.  I’m taking a couple fishing poles with.  We packed some sandwiches and lots of water bottles.  No beer as they are pretty strict about boating and alcohol.  It’s already 78.
Last night a turtle came ashore and laid eggs on the beach.  We can see the tracks in the sand from our balcony.  Donna took pictures of the tracks.  Kinda cool but I wish I’d seen the turtle.  By the size of the tracks I estimate it was at least 2 foot in diameter at least.

I caught maybe 2 dozen.
(Stopped counting after 12)

Donna, not so good.
She was quick out of the gate, quickly getting 3 before I even got a bite.

Everything was small.
8-14”
I had 3 keepers I gave away.

Lots of sun and heat.
Great time.

Got 6 or 7 sail cats off the docks today using squid.  Lots of fun.
Also a small lane snapper and few tiny trash fish
Lane snapper are great to eat but this guy was like only 10”.
Going out in a pontoon again tomorrow.
I’ll take a rod and the rest of the squid.
Maybe I’ll ask Donna to snap a few pix for you guys.
Only got to 84 today

Had a great day on the water.
Rented a pontoon for half a day.
No fishing.
Just riding and a couple hrs on the beach.
My son Chris, his son CJ (our grandson), and my brother David and his wife Chris joined Donna and I.
Beautiful day.
And the weather was perfect.
Even got up to 95 degrees!!!
Nice day for sure.
Tomorrow we head back north for a few months before we can return for good.

Tick tock

Went down to our fishing pier here in the park to toss a Cleo for a while.  Two small strikes but nothing hooked.  Probably just small baitfish nipping at it.
Nice to just get out there and toss a spoon.

Here’s two pics of the water off our pier.

Donna and I did a little casting off our park fishing pier.  I hooked something on the first cast, it rolled in the water giving us a quick glimpse but broke off immediately.  Probably a snook.  Old line.  We also got a visitor to watch Donna cast.  A little guy only about 4 foot.

Be sure to click on each photo to see it larger.

Nice. Beats shoveling snow.  Not sure if you follow John Skinner on You Tube but he's down there now on the west coast somewhere, hammering some good fish.

Not sure how much range you have from your home port but Cape Haze used to be good habitat.
Title: Re: Soon
Post by: Mac Attack on Feb 27, 2023, 06:53 PM
Cape Haze is too far.
About a 4-5 hr boat trip.
And there's tons of very fishable waters between here and there.
Donna and I discussed the situation tonight as a matter of fact.
Lots of things playing out and I won't bore you.............yet.

Stay tuned to this channel.

Went down to the fishing pier here in the park with Christopher and my grandson CJ.  I got a little stingray.  CJ caught a nice little kitty.  CJ had another on but was a little too excited, horsed it a little and lost it.  Nice day today with my boys.  Only got up to 80 and we had a nice breeze, so it was pretty comfortable.

I've been coming down here for about 35 yrs and have never heard of anyone that eats them.

However, after seeing your question, I googled it -

Donna walks every morning.
Me.....not so much.
However, we both go to water exercise every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
And I will walk with her and the dog a couple/three times a week after dinner.
We are definitely more active down here thru the winter months for sure.

Anyway, tomorrow Donna won't be taking her normal walk.
We are headed to the beach.
She will walk and look for shark's teeth, shells, and other fancies in the sand.
I will take 2 poles and do some surf fishing.
Pole one is a 7' medium spinning rig with a 2 hook bait rig and I will use frozen shrimp on it.
Pole two is my 8' heavy spinning rig and it will have a sliding egg sinker and #3 circle hook for larger fish and it will have frozen squid on the hook.
We are headed out about 7:30 and only plan on staying until about 11-11:30 as it is supposed to get into the lower 90's tomorrow afternoon.

Then I'm taking Donna to lunch at a local raw bar on the Mayaka River.
We have not been to this place in maybe 10 yrs.
Cold draft beers in a frosty cold mug, raw oysters and clams, maybe some peel-n-eat shrimp and/or some steamed mussels.
Should be fun.
We have held off going there because it's very popular and gets packed.
But a ton of the snowbirds are already gone, so it should be a little quieter and nicer to enjoy.
Population down here triples in the winter.

Should be fun.

Was a very nice day for sure.
No fish were harmed.
Lots of stolen bait - probably crabs and small baitfish.

Then I got this to watch this scene (probably another reason my bait was getting stollen) -

(https://i.postimg.cc/SjdFQvww/thumbnail-IMG-8330.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/SjdFQvww)

And this little guy begged for scraps from me all morning.
At the end I let him have my last frozen shrimp and 2 chunks of squid.

Donna and I hit the beach this morning.
I had a few bites but nothing really took it.  They stripped me of squid chunks, I’m sure it was smaller fish.
Tons of sea turtle nests roped off.
Nice day in the sun.

I have to get back to some fishing soon.
It's been too hot to hit the beach for any surf casting.
And even on the fishing pier here in my community, in the shade, it's been too hot.
I'm going to go throw a spoon in the next day or two.
Just to get out.

Title: Re: Soon
Post by: Mac Attack on Sep 06, 2023, 07:44 AM
I found my limits.............and then some.

I love it hot.
Say high 80's.
Even low 90's is ok, but not every single day.
However, this past summer it has been in the upper 90's and low 100's for far too long.
And every day!

A few weeks back I took a cold beer outside and sat under my car port, in the shade.
I was sitting there.
Not doing anything.
And I was sweating like I was working out in the yard.

And to make things even more lovely, the humidity has been in the low to mid 90% range pretty much non stop.

It's been a record summer for heat.
And it really hasn't rained like normal either.
It's getting better.
Only supposed to get to 93 today.

Right now..........I'm headede to the pool for water exercises.

You pick your poison Dom.
I hate the bitter cold and most of all, the snow and the slop of winter.
Shoveling and snow blowing was actually fun for me.
But the rest of it suked.
I played hockey years ago, ice fished, skated, tobogganing, snowmobiles, etc.
It got old, and with my neuropathy, it became unbearable.
Stay inside for 3 months up north during the winter or stay inside for 3 months down here.
Like I said, I like the heat, but only to a point.
It has been abnormally hot this past summer.

Our little camper will allow us to take off and escape it though.

It’s never perfect Mac. One has to learn to live with it. It’s 88* and 72% outdoors here right now…..September 6. Ridiculous! Personally, I don’t like it. I’ll take the couple months indoors in the winter. Don’t really have to go put other than to buy groceries and other necessities any way.

This summer has been pretty nice….up till now. But it’s only a few days and it’ll be 70+ and 50+. Perfect in my book.

I was done mowing the course by 10:00 and home watering the gardens by 10:30. It’s 73 where I’m sitting and I’m quite happy. In 4 months I’ll think 50 is like the Bahamas.

I’m really ok with that.

Here's an interesting read about places on earth with moderate temps/not too hot or too cold.

https://mnolangray.medium.com/cities-of-the-world-where-you-dont-need-ac-or-heat-mapped-2a3d6e018970

I heard about a couple of farmers in my area that farm up here in Indiana during the warmer months and farm in Argentina when it's too cold to farm in Indiana.

I have travelled most of my career.
All over the world, and to a few places you would not want to go to.
Some of the armpits of our planet.

Hawaii was my pick for best weather, however, the cost to live there is crazy.

There is no place anywhere on the earth that is perfect.

It's beautiful down here..................from mid-September thru mid-June.
Some of June thru about the beginning of September it is hot and very humid.
Over 90 every day, dipping into the 100's here and there, and humidity in the 80-95% range pretty much every day.
Live up north and deal with the cold, snow, salt, and slop in the winter.
Live down here and deal with the heat in the summer.
Live halfway between them and deal with ice and other issues.
No place perfect.

You want the best?
Have 2 places, one north and one south - become a snowbird.
We wrestled with this for a few years before we moved down here.
We knew we were moving down here and had been planning it since the late 80's early 90's.
But the original plan was to keep the place on Lake Erie and use that for summers.
Donna eventually decided that she didn't want to do this as she didn't want the stress related with owning 2 places.
Specifically, two places that you cannot be at together........at the same time.
She did not want to be down here worrying about the place up there.
And vice versa.
She also didn't want me having to maintain two places - I didn't care about this, but I did understand the stress part.
Being down here and worrying about the place up north on Lake Erie during blizzards and windstorms.
Or being up there worrying about this place down here during hurricanes.
I know..........homeowners' insurance.
Well, I'm here to tell you that dealing with insurance companies is not all gumdrops and roses.
We are still waiting on the contractors to get started to repair the carport and roof over the lanai.
It took the insurance company almost 14 months to finally pay us enough for the damage we sustained from Ian.
Of course, we had to get to a PA and a lawyer to fight them in court in order to get it, and then also pay 25% of our payout to the PA and the lawyer.
There is no place that is perfect.
However, as Dorothy said, "There's no place like home".
Wherever that may be.

We now have the trailer.
We will use that during summer months to escape the heat here and there.
I'm in the process of some very serious upgrades to it so we can go virtually anywhere.
When I'm finished with it I'll post things over in the camping section.
In mid June we will head north for 2 months in NY's southern tier and then a trip to Bar Harbor in September.
Not sure how the stress from being away from this place down here will affect Donna, but we will give it a go and see what happens.
