Bait tank suggestions
« on: Aug 04, 2008, 01:16 PM »
I want something bigger and a little more sophisticated this fall/winter. I've been keeping the shiners I catch in year's past in a large camping cooler with an aerator and changed the water every couple days. I was thinking of using and old rubber drum with an aquarium filter and an aerator. Basically I have a few things I need for the bait tank:

-Must be simple to make
-Fairly inexpensive
-Be able to hold 100-200 shiners(depends on how many I can catch this fall)
-Not have to change the water as frequently

I'm open to suggestions from people. I know Hazmat will chime in on this one because he is the bait tank master, although I dont need anything quite as elaborate as his.  ;D

Read a past thread that was posted on that subject, a lot of good info;

Smelt Slayer mentioned that timing of the trapping is important. If the water's too warm you'll have fungas.

i've used a 55 gallon plastic drum on its side, with a 12 x 12 hole/door for access. get a canister filter for aquariums, and an aerator. it also had a hose spigot in the larger hole for easy emptying. fill it 3/4 of the way, and it will hold bait a long time.

How often did you have to change the water?

Last year I ran a tank with an aquarium filter and an aerator . when I went fishing I took the water for my bait bucket out of the tank with the bait I was going to use for the day. When on the water I changed the bait bucket's water with fresh lake water and when I got home I replaced the water I took from the tank in the morning with the fresh lake water from the bait bucket . That's all I did for water changes and it worked fine . I lost a few here and there , But not many .  I think the most important thing is keeping the water cool .
