I thought this was really cool . I tied some black spiders last night to fish with today and got a decent brown trout.i figured lunch when I went to clean him he had a old white spider in his mouth I pulled it and the hook was rusted and broke ......

if you  zoom in on the  browns  head i set the old  whit spider and  my  black  spider i  took him on  ....the  white  spider  had about a  foot of tippet material  still on it that  was  all  brown and  slimmy  i wonder how  long  has this  fly  been  stuck in  his  mouth?

That’s pretty cool Rick. Think it was one of your flies?
If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

no it was  not  one of mine it was  a  pre made spider body  fly   the hook  fell apart  when i  grabbed it with my hemostats  i'm sure the  fish was a  hold  over  but  with  c & r fishing allowed all  year  who knows  and  like me was the fisherman  looking to get  some of the  monster gills here ....either way  it was really cool  for me  ;D

Nice fish and a pretty cool story too. You definitely have a special place if you can catch big trout and panfish in the same water

Cool story about the spider,I'll have to try one ,never have used one. BUT have caught them on bumble bees, ants, and grass hoppers of course. Love dry  fly fishing even when there is no surface activity!

well i  never thought of a  foam spinder as a trout  fly however this  is mostly a flat water  place and the  the spider sure  worked  on that brown (twice)..... i have to say  i think i have had  more fun fly fishing this  year then i ever have  before...and   met some  very nice people along the way  ......oat i have  used the  bumble  bee ,ants, and  grasshoppers myself  i have  noticed  if you tie a  yellow  spider  put  some  black  stripes on it with a sharpie and  watch the increase  in  hits .......keep  fishing and  have  fun .......

and thanks it was a  nice brown  about 15 or 16 is my guess

OK all you fly guys, you have this old fart talked into giving it a try.....but I need a little advise  Here's what I have:
A  7' Fenwick 3 oz rod    with a Plueger  medalist reel    And  #6f  line   Some kind of tapered leader but that's about all I know about it   It was spooled up by Ed Bendyl of Northville when he was still active in the trade. He's gone now. I told him I had in mind steam Brookies so that's what he put together for me. I've never used it.

So,  I would like to target Bluegills as that is where I get my jollies when not after walleye or bullheads. I could stop to Bass Pro in Utica and purchase a modest assortment of flies to get started if you guys would offer some suggestions as to what to get. I don't know the fly names. Also wondering if I should keep a spare leader?  And what type. This should be an interesting venture.

I would appreciate any help and I'll be sure to keep y'all posted.  Thanks guys
