crabbin
« on: Aug 05, 2012, 09:05 PM »
can't believe theres a saltwater board in NJ and no mention of crabbing  ??? ???  then again there doesn't seem to be a whole lot posted on here but I'll see if theres any other interest....

hit up the Navesink for a few hours this afternoon...started off slow but picked up as the day went on...had to double anchor because of the wind/ tide and the current was ripping pretty good but we made the best of it  :D

This was before we found the honey hole:  ;D

One of the better ones all day:

Baits of choice were bunker and chicken backs....both seemed to work just as well....drop lines outfished drop nets and traps combined  ;D

We launched at 1 of the marinas in Red Bank...forget the name of it off the top of my head though...just be careful at dead low tide as I ripped a trailer up pretty good since the signs for the end of the ramp aren't 100% accurate  :-\

Theres a few in Matawan Creek too  ;)

not too bad for about 3 hours with 2 guys in the boat :D

I think I would have had more but I was too busy screwing around with the snappers and spots on the rods to pay attention to the traps and drop lines  :D

When I lived in NY, used to go crabbin all the time.. but now I am in New jersey, don't know where to go? And also, do you need a shellfish permit in NJ?

Clamming also, where would you go clamming? I want to try that out too.. anyone know?

no need for any permits in NJ unless you plan on running trotlines and/or Maryland style commercial traps and even then I think the permit was only $2   as to where to go, we were crabbing just about all the creeks that dump into the Raritan Bay last year and doing pretty well at all of them. The Barnegate Bay and the creeks that dump into it were also really good from guys I talked to but I didn't get a chance to make it down there

as to clamming, I've only done it a few times on the Barnegate and that was many years ago. I know only certain areas of the bay are open. Also the info on where they are and the license needed can be found on the NJ Fish Game and Wildlife's website

I've heard that from a few guys...I haven't even made it out this summer

I know a few guys in south NJ (AC south to Wildwood) that have been absolutely hammering them but up north I think Sandy had a much bigger impact on the blue claw populations  :-\

the peanut bunker schools also seem very small compared to years past but the spot have exploded...some casts are seeing a fish on every hook of the sabiki rig and theres more croakers around than I ever remember seeing ;D
