We went out Saturday to get in on the incredible striper bite around Block island. Reports of 40-50 pound striped bass have been common. After launching the boat at the crazily busy ramp at Galilee, we stopped outside the west wall to catch some scup for bait, then headed for BI. We found the fleet and got in line, drifting live eels and live scup on three-way rigs. The bluefish and the gnarly bottom took a toll on our bait and gear, but we were rewarded with some nice fish from dusk into the night.
No fifties were taken, actually no forties, either. But I landed a 34# and a 37.5# on consecutive drifts with the same eel , while my friend Paul had a 31.5# and a 17#. My other friend Tom had a big fish easily in the thirties come unbuttoned right at the boat. Another smaller bass was taken, but I forgot by who. The weather was perfect and the rewards were well worth the trip out to the Block.
34# I just noticed the bad eye on this fish... No wonder I was able to fool it.
Chunky 31.5#
