My new (old) boat
« on: Oct 19, 2019, 06:01 PM »
With the decision made to "summer" here in WNY when we retire, and the upgrades being made at our place on Lake Erie to do so, I decided I needed a bigger boat.
The Lund really served me well.
Anyway, I decided to get another Trophy.
But one not as large as my last one.
This one is only 21' but should work well.
Anchor Marine is storing it for the winter for me.

Here are some pics -

X2! I’m wondering how many projects/upgrades you already have planned.

Nice Mac!
I like a boat you can take a nap in👍

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

Yup!
Quite a few.
Researching an autopilot currently.
I have used a King 2X on past boats.
They worked just ok.
Not especially good if you were bucking wind and waves.
No longer made, but I can get a rebuilt one with a 3 yr warranty for like $1600.
WAY too much for a sub-par autopilot IMHO.
I am not sure if the steering is cable or hydraulic on the boat.
If hydraulic, Lowrance makes a system that is good, but takes a LOT of time to setup and tune properly.
Also not cheap.

With all of the technology available these days I simply find it hard to believe that nobody markets a simple autopilot for smaller power boats.
Not many options and they all cost $3-3.5K

I put a Lowrance in our 30 foot Southport last year, or more accurately paid someone to put it in. It was expensive but I did a Simrad EVO and 4G radar at the same time so just tacked it on to the bill. Learning how to use it is the challenge. And I can't seem to get the compass to hold it's calibration, but I am sure I am doing something wrong. So far all I can do is hold a course heading, but I'll get more time on it next year.

Get the Lowrance and maybe you can teach me how to use it lol!

The boat is still in storage but I spoke to my buddy over at the marina and he said they did everything I wanted done before they shrink wrapped it and put it away for the winter.

Here is what I had them do -

New gimble bearing and boots on the lower unit.
New fluids and filters in lower units and main motors - both I/O and kicker.
New fuel filters on both motors.
New main filter water separator between main tank and motors (2 outlets, one each to each motor - same as I had on my Lund)
New water pump impellers on both motors
Pull the power cord off my old Lund for the HDS 8 that I kept.

This past weekend I attended the fishing show in the Falls and bought a set of Amish Outfitters planer boards.
They came with two 200' spools of 500# tet5her cord, two heavy shock cords, and I selected the HUGE flags for them.
The flags are like 12" x 8" and the mast is almost 3' tall.
We won't (or other boats) have any trouble seeing them out on the water.  lol   :D
I also got 24 of their orange planer board line clips and a small bag of 200 of the lighter rubber bands .
I like using rubber bands.

Now because these boards pull like no others, I am going to sell my two Cannon single planer board mast and reels.
I'm going to build a 2" diameter aluminum tube rocket launcher and mount some Cisco planer reels and swivel pulleys on it.
The Cisco system is NOT cheap but Frank at Amish Outfitters says he knows for sure their clutch will handle his boards.
He has heard nothing but bad things on all the others.
I spoke to the guy from Cisco at the show and got him to email me a quote for this stuff and state on it that the show price quote was good till the end of May.
This show price carried a 15% discount off his on-line pricing.

We also bought two new Diawa fiberglass 7' downrigger rods
They have a far slower action and will allow us to almost bend them down to touch the water when we preload (cock) them.
Graphite rods simply have far too much backbone to do this.
The other choice was for us to build what we wanted but that woulda cost $100-150 per rod.
These were both under $20 each.
I wanted 2 pc rods and these are 1 pc, but they should be fine as they are the only 2 one pc rods we will have for the boat.

I will add a 2nd HDS8 and ethernet the 2 as I had done on the Lund.
We are also looking at mounting that new 87" Riptide Terova 122# iPilot up front.
But the money is running out with the purchases made on the cruise we are taking in May and new place at the lake and the concrete for it.
So mother Mac's cupboard is getting pretty bare.
I have time and it will fish the way it is for a bit till I can replenish the funds to Donna's satisfaction.   ;)

Heading up to Three Mile Bay with Jeff today to look at and lay out a mortar launcher system for the boat.
