Stiles and Baldpate for bass?
« on: Mar 25, 2022, 12:33 PM »
Last couple years I've been fishing these ponds for trout.  Decent action on the stockies, haven't seen any holdovers.  Baldpate gets a fall stocking which is a nice diversion in October.  However, every time I've tried to catch a bass in either of these ponds, I've struck out.  Seems really weird to me, as I've tried pretty hard with a bunch of proven baits/tactics, and only have caught a few pickerel and panfish.  Habitat looks fantastic in both ponds with great shoreline vegetation and blowdowns, deeper holes, sandy beach areas for spawning, etc.

Anyone have any *general* success with largemouth bass in either of these two?  I can go elsewhere for bass action but it just confounds me why these ponds aren't more productive.  I must be missing something.
It is understood that fishing licenses, gas, bait, etc., all cost money, but try not to let a limit of trout be your only gauge for success. – Ben Nugent, (NH F&G) Regional Fisheries Biologist

monster pickerel in Stiles, stunted crappie too..never did well on bass in either. I have taken hold over browns in baldpate, but it's been many years since I've fished either..

Thanks for your insight, Joe.  Always appreciated.

Stilles is also stocked in the fall. There is alot of boat action in there and I found you only have a good shot at bass early in the morning or at night and as Joe says there are some huge pickerel in there.
I normally use to catch them thru the ice down the far end. I'm talking 5 to 6 pounders
