Title: Fat Boy's 2014 Photo Eye Candy
Post by: Fat Boy on Mar 26, 2014, 10:28 AM
Welcome to my photographic story for 2014.

My first open water trip of the year was two weeks ago and what a day it was.  I had my first multiple musky day of the year!  My first musky of the year isn't a big one, but a 34.25" male, but for me it's a milestone.  I religiously do figure 8's at boatside and always put forth my best effort with doing them correctly.  I've had hot fish follow through several full 8's before, but hadn't had even a bite during those experiences.  I'm in the habit of always doing them (or other boatside maneuvers depending on the type of lure) to tempt followers.  But this fish came deep, and I never saw it, and hit on the third full figure 8.  What a thrill!  It was my first figure 8 fish.  He's not big, but I'm very proud of this fish:

He's posing for you all with a nice smile displaying his business end:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2Fkevin_Potomac_5_zps779c0ea1.jpg&hash=065c672270b51d000d6a17faca86dee5)

And he's even happier now after this clean release:

My next musky, the second of the day, was a larger one, a female that was tagged, that slammed a glider.  She was 39.5" long.  I have since reported the tag info and found out that in October 2011, according to our fisheries biologist, she was electroshocked and tagged, and was 35.5" long and weighed 12.25 pounds, growing at a rate of 1.7" per year.  I didn't weigh her this time, but she seemed pretty fat.   She T-boned the glider from underneath and put up quite a fight before coming to the net.

Here she is:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2Fkevin_Potomac_2_zps0f25628e.jpg&hash=7d3f90c123be11c8ed68cde32296cbe7)

It was a great day, water temps were in the low 40's.  Air temps went from below freezing to over 60 degrees (shown holding a musky in a t-shirt in March)!

Thanks guys!  That fish inspired me to blog about the figure 8 (link to blog in my sig).

I'm trying to get my boat trailer fixed so I can get out there more often.  It's frustrating seeing my boat in my carport, crying for me to take her out.

Nice fish Kevin. Congrats on the figure 8 catch as well. Headed down your way with boat on Friday. Hope to put some bass in the boat. ;)

Hopefully we're done...right now everything is flooded!  Once the rivers drop, life will be good :)

Now, time to fix my boat trailer...ughhh.  Dang money pit.
Title: Re: Fat Boy's 2014 Photo Eye Candy (spring has sprung down my way)
Post by: Fat Boy on Apr 16, 2014, 07:43 AM
My buddy Howard hit a small lake a couple hours from home that is one of our favorite day trips.  Expectations were high considering our success here the past few years, as we proceeded to launch the S.S. Fat Boy.  It was nice getting the boat in the water after having it sit in my carport until I had the money to fix the trailer.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F20140411_093209_zps2475fc7b.jpg&hash=eaf352ca599f95149ee202299f1b46ce)

Another buddy, Rodger wanted to fish with us that day too, so he brought his scanoe and fished solo.  We’d cross paths throughout the day, mostly to make sure that he was OK and also to see if he was into fish or not.  We had the option of fishing three out of my boat if things weren’t working out for him.  Other than learning to control his scanoe on a windy day, he did pretty well, including catching chain pickerel for the first time.  I think this was his second chainside.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111404_zps6576ccae.jpg&hash=1ec2b588326b20c09cebd35d85ea0e24)

A fish pic, with Rodg having a death grip on the slime rocket!
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111403_zps9f84a570.jpg&hash=d0e6a905a2f64fdfb30262b1db2e5579)

And for good reason too…these things have teeth, so of course, we told him not to lip them.  He took the advice.  I wish that I had paid more attention to my own advice.  One nice sized chain pickerel that I tried to measure (and didn’t get a length) flipped over the boat and raked his teeth across my hand during his escape:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111413_zpscf2a38a9.jpg&hash=d277ab3e72ae0fb67bef82d16addea94)

This pickerel cooperated for a measurement later in the day and went 23 ½” long.  The toothy critter wasn't very long, but was fat and had a big head!
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111401_zpsfa1d65a3.jpg&hash=3de864d69f62565f6011d48eafbd291a)

Howard tied into the pickerel too, landing the longest one  that measured 24”:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111411_zps026248db.jpg&hash=06d93a3ac9a3f6952cfceb0b76c8ecf6)

Conditions were tough during the day, but we did manage to catch a few bass in the process.  Here’s Howard with a decent one.  Most of the bass were on the small side on this trip.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111402_zpsa7aa0c6f.jpg&hash=304754788a14254ee2612b46e9cf8732)

Howard caught a couple slab crappie on a plastic worm, giving him the multi-species award for the day.  I had one hooked and lost it at the boat on a Rat-L-Trap earlier.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111409_zps76ddfb62.jpg&hash=ff915a8dbb610a0bcfb453f3d8cb21bb)

Howard with another nice pickerel:

Wanna play kiss the pickerel?  Here’s the business end of ol’ chainsides:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111410_zpsdbf5dcc4.jpg&hash=747d245710352772bd5b4060f0a9e44a)

What a great day out there.  The fishing was on the tough side, but the company and scenery were fantastic.  When I want my mind to drift, here is where it goes:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111408_zpsfcd377b3.jpg&hash=08f71b6fc0cbc2039be5fce08732f830)

It’s another world altogether with those beautiful cypress trees:
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111406_zpsb32bd3af.jpg&hash=565a1fbf19d4c0febf6d729517f6e3f2)

Howard battling a pickerel in the upper end of the lake in some really skinny water.  The bigger bass boats don’t venture up this far.
(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F04111405_zpsa8e64a4b.jpg&hash=43b4b61979d36b015a8b5b372ee9329f)

I finished with thirteen bass and seven chain pickerel.  Howard had similar numbers.  The crankbait bite was hot early, then completely died.  After that, plastic worms were the ticket.  I had seven bite offs to annoy me!  Howard picked up some fish on a chatterbait too.  It was a fun trip, but we were pretty beat at the end of the day.  Even though it was a Friday, there were more boats on the lake than I can ever recall.  Still, I can’t wait to get back there.

Yeah, it was 80 degrees on Saturday!  We got a 1/2 inch of snow turned slush last night but melted by the morning.  Tomorrow, back in the mid 50's.  Hopefully, I'll have more pics soon.

How much ice do y'all have?

Way to go Fat Boy, great start to your open water season. Congrats on the nice musky, bass, crappie and pickerel. 8)

Good to see folks out already on the water, like Raquettedacker's area, we also got whalloped again with a good amount of snow this time on Good or should I say not so good Friday. :P
There has been hardly any heat to melt the ice, so most of our lakes are still with 4 feet or so of ice. Not sure if we well be open water fish or ice fishing come opening day on May 5th. :-\

Here are a couple more pics from a recent trip for tidal bass.  We spent a lot of time chasing stripers which weren't biting that day.  But when we bass fished, we caught several of these (like identical 2 pound twins everywhere).  That's OK, I'll take 'em all day long.

(https://www.myfishfinder.com/fishing_forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv19%2Ffatboykevin%2F20140412_135428_zps8e9b7efa.jpg&hash=78009f395fa6aa1159cff2d82e3b78b8)

I love this picture.  When unhooking this bass, the crankbait was free and clear, and as I was ready to release it, the next thing you know I look down and this little bugger was chomping down on my line cutter!  It was wedged in there pretty good.  My buddy's suggested that I tie it on and cast it out there  ;D

Yeah, FB we could use warm weather for sure. :P
Hope we get enough warm weather to open up a few creeks or rivers at least. Might find a fish or 2 in them. :-\

Nice looking largemouth bass FB. :)
That line cutter might be a new secret lure, you never know.lol. ;)

It was great, albeit a bit more windy than I'd like, until about 2:30 when the skies opened up and soaked us.  But you're right, at least I got out!  The good news is that I found out that my truck repair isn't going to be all that expensive (transmission and motor are fine)...whew!

Nice fish Kevin. This weekend was tough I went down by your house Sunday. Ended up being a bass tournament down there. I managed 3 but nothing big all in the 12-14 inch range. Everyone was struggling! That cold front that came thru Sat. night probably didn't help.

I bet it did, it was pretty windy which probably limited where you could go too.  We need to hook up.  Truck is fixed, boat is in great shape and the trailer...finally!

I went musky fishing yesterday and got the musky skunk.  But big lures catch big fish, and this spawned out 19.5" smallie kept me from getting totally blanked.  Nice consolation prize, huh?

If it stays cool enough, then I might have the S.S. Fat Boy out again.  If not, and the hurricane stays out to sea, then I might try the wet wade again somewhere.  Yeah, tell me about the money pit!  Jeesh!  Houses, Boats and trucks.  I won't say anything about my wife  :whistling:

Thanks Bob, sure, come on down!!!  I had a day a few years ago that I'll never forget on a nearby stretch, 99 smallies in six hours on a buzzbait, biggest only 19" but had thirty fish over 16" that day, and a lot between 12"-14".  A fly rod would tear 'em up.

Sweet FB, that looks like a great finder. I to have been looking at the scanning units also. Keep us informed on how it works for you when you get it going

I will post about it once I experiment with it.  I plan on using the side scan a lot for chasing muskies.  Even the HD feature is a huge upgrade for me.  I had a chance to really research what I want, and studied other anglers side scan videos, pretty cool stuff.  At least now I understand what I'm looking at and how it works.  When I saw one the first time, I didn't get it (I guess I'm a bit slow, LOL).

I'm pretty stoked about it.

The only problem, dropped the big $ to get it, and then my truck battery goes bad (another $150 down the tubes) yesterday and this morning, my car broke down... Needs an IAC valve according to the scope, and they are another $230 just for the part.

I told my wife that I got the depthfinder on sale and BPS won't let me return it  ;D ;D ;D

I haven't fished much this year compared to the past couple years for various reasons that are beyond my control, but do get to sneak out a few times.  I have yet to test out the new sonar although I did install it, so maybe this weekend the S.S. Fat Boy and I can get out to play.

Here are a couple pics from my past couple trips, first shoreline bassin':

Nice chunk from the other day that crushed a buzzer:

Thanks Dom.  Yeah we've still got a lot of green, but temps have really cooled down a lot.  You can definitely tell that change is coming so we shouldn't be too far behind y'all.  The fishing should get pretty good and since bow season is in, the waters shouldn't be crowded.

Did you all just have ice out?   ;D

Thanks guys!

I took a mini vacation to get some much needed fishing time from last week, here are some pics.  The bass were from two days, musky fished the rest (one day skunked, the other day a pike).  I had one day with two 20+" bass, then a few days later, had 17 bass with 4 of them over 20", and two 19.5", smallest was 17"!!!!  It was a day that I'll never forget.  Black plastic worms or a skirted black/blue jig with a worm trailer...it was windy and the fish were a bit deeper than you'd think, but when you found 'em, hang on.

Also got a 37" northern pike (on a musky bait while targeting musky), several pickerel and some huge pumpkinseeds.
