Title: outboard impeller
Post by: slamboney on Apr 02, 2014, 10:35 AM
How often do you guys replace the impeller on your outboards. I had a friend that had one go last year.He brought it in to get fixed 3 times and they never got it right, apparently pieces of the impeller broke and got stuck in the works, it ended up blowing up his motor, a fairly new yamaha 4-stroke. Thinking maybe I'll have mine done as preventative maintenance this year.

I have my 9.9 Force in for some carb work right now and the guy called and said the impeller was shot. The motor is about 10 years old and this is the first time.

Do it every other year.
It's cheap insurance and you can do it yourself.
If you don't know how, buy a shop manual for your specific outboard.
Money well spent and it's detailed in all of them quite well.

Good luck and good PM

Living in Maine with a rather limited boating season, the yamaha dealer recommended every 5 years. Easy job to complete, google youtube video for your engine.

I know he's a dealer, and SHOULD know, but I don't agree with him.
They dry up and take a "set".
Especially when not used.
Like you said, easy job.
So why not do it more often and be protected.
Cheap and easy insurance.

The one in my 1967 Johnson 10 HP went almost 40 years before it stopped impelling. They used to
put much more durable material in them.
