Have you tried contacting Mercury and giving them the serial number?

Since no one is posting....

It looks VERY similar to a 50hp I had. It was a really great motor but it was thirsty like 90.

Long ago, I had a 50 hp mercury that had blue trim on the cowl like yours.  The original owner bought it new in 1974.  I think the next series they made had red trim on the cowl, or maybe brown.  I'm pretty sure you have one made in the early 70's.  I would also guess it to be 35hp or 40hp, but that is just a guess.

I think its between 1980-1984. Is that the only badge on it? How many cylinders is it?

I figure out the year and horsepower by perusing the Boats.net site. Your motor looks like a 40HP. Is there a 400 decal on the back? Another way to find the year is to Google Image various years and HP ratings by typing in "1984 40HP merc" and seeing if the hits look like yours. There's also a site explaining the serial ranges. If I find it again, I'll post here.

You really should see if it is going to run first before you bother with buying a used gearcase. There's a water tube you can adapt a garden hose to fit and pump water through so you can run it without a gearcase attached. A few hose clamps, some reducing hoses/fittings, whatever it takes to get water passing through the block and you'll be fine.
