I have this motor and trying to find bottom I dont know the year or hp of the motor any help ?
I figure out the year and horsepower by perusing the Boats.net site. Your motor looks like a 40HP. Is there a 400 decal on the back? Another way to find the year is to Google Image various years and HP ratings by typing in "1984 40HP merc" and seeing if the hits look like yours. There's also a site explaining the serial ranges. If I find it again, I'll post here. You really should see if it is going to run first before you bother with buying a used gearcase. There's a water tube you can adapt a garden hose to fit and pump water through so you can run it without a gearcase attached. A few hose clamps, some reducing hoses/fittings, whatever it takes to get water passing through the block and you'll be fine.
