You'll have to watch the video to see why we called this Bowfin(dogfish) a dogeye.

Man, that's frusturating.  Northerns are usually pretty easy to tell from eyes, but carp, dogfish, and burbot can be really hard.  I've been pumped up several times thinking this is gonna be my 12 lb eye and it turns into a carp.  Oh well, that's half the fun of fishing!

It's a Bowfin or some would call it a dogfish.
If you saw the video it fought like a walleye,& it gave us a few peeks that looked like a walleye ,but in the end it was a dogfish,so I called it a dogeye.
I think you follow ,eh?

Hand to hand combat with a prehistoric sea monster sounds like at least as much fun as catching a walleye!

If you look how stout its tail is, it's no wonder it can fight!

I've caught them and think they put all other gamefish to shame on fighting ability. I don't like mounting them though. The flesh is mooshy too.

chen,

I think that it is a state or provincial thing when it comes whether or not a fish is endanered, extinct, or a candidate species.  The bowfin in some states is very plentiful like in NY, IL, WI and a few other states.  The Bowfin in PA is a candidate species for extinction because of the low population.  Infact, the PA the PFBC advises to release any and all bowfins caught unharmed.

Dont know......
