Not trout but still long rod related.  Me and 3 friends fished the Cheeky Schoolie Tournament on the cape this Saturday.  The weather did not really cooperate for the long rod but my new sinking line setup worked as advertised in adverse conditions.  Unfortunately we were only able to find small fish.  They were all covered in sea lice but I didn't land one that broke the 20" mark to register for the tourney.  I landed probably the smallest striper of my life on my second cast.  It was like 10" and then proceeded to land 3 more in the first 1.5 hours but they were all 12-18".  We tried several other spots in the afternoon, one friend landed 3 other rats and one guy got one 24" striper at the buzzer but didn't have his ruler to even register it.  Regardless was a fun day, learned some new spots, what to do and what not to do.  May give it another try next year as the cause and swag bag were worth it.

There's also the Upper Ammonoosuck further north along the Rt. 110 corridor up around Stark and Milan. Lots of tribs and forks too.  Never fished that one though. Maybe this summer.

General Fishing Discussion / Re: Lake Erie Algae
« Last post by Mac Attack on May 21, 2024, 08:36 AM »
They eat algae but not the filamentous algae that I am aware of. They filter out suspended algae (phytoplankton) and zooplankton.

I tell you want really goes to town on FA, but would not survive in temps below 50 F.  Tilapia! A big demand had developed for tilapia to keep filamentous algae under control in private ponds vs. chemicals. Southerners started using them and their popularity has spread farther north. They also multiply on a regular basis which provides forage for largemouth bass. And no worry of overpopulating a pond as they they die once temps drop to 50 F. or below.

Another forage base for the walleyes too I would imagine.
Probably not a feasible solution though on a body of water the size of Erie.

So far, spreading Irish spring soap around and rubbing it in the hemlock wood beds has kept them out.  But, I really think a few traps are in order.
Meanwhile, I top dressed about 3-4” of each bed with a combination of coast of Maine bumper crop and peat. I needed more water retention and also wanted to lower the PH a little. My plants seem to like the change.  Time will tell.
This is the exciting time of year for gardens!
