Title: More X-Files
Post by: fishin_musician on Apr 12, 2004, 07:49 PM
This may be a subject that applies to night fishers mostly, but perhaps not. Have any of you ever been out at night or whenever and got the he-be-jeebes crawling up and down your spine. I have, and I can blame it on to many late night road trips listening to Art Bell. All those UFO abducts catfisherman stories and the ghosts that you can hear if you turn up your tape recorder and listen to the static stories. How about this your sitting out on the river late at night. It's summer and it just happens to be the middle of a rabies pandemic. You dose off and start to dream that there is a raccoon licking you face. You startle and there is a raccoon at your feet eating your cutbait. If you ever where abducted how would you know? Once I was sitting out late at night fishing when a bright light came in low straight at me I was frozen in place as it drew closer and closer dead on it kept coming. The light was right in my eyes when I realized that it was a medivac helecopter going to a hospital about a half mile up the mountain behind me. There has got to be better stories than my lame *** examples. I want to be afraid to go out at night again.

I've never gotten that eeeeerie feeling while fishing at night, but hunting coyotes at night can be scary as hell!

I wear night vision goggles when fishing at night so there's nothing to be scared about.

Actually, I'm just pulling your leg but wouldn't that be cool.

i saw this episode of unsolved mysteries where these guys in canada got abducted when they were camping by a lake. Called Alagash Abductions (sp).

Well, after I saw that a few weeks later, I was fishing a lake miles from civilization (when I say miles, I mean like 40 or so) and there is supposed to be NO air traffic. Well, For some, unknown reason, a helicopter flew maybe 20 FEET over the lake's surface, and when I saw the lights coming for me (green ones in the windows) I almost pi**ed my pants.

I do believe there was an x-files episode involving Lake George.  A UFO crashing into the lake or something like that.  Does anybody know about that one?  Fishing after dark can be spooooooooky!  Last fall a large barn owl came real close to me swooping down from a tree at night.  That got the blood pressure up a bit.  I do a lot of night fishing though cause it's quiet and in the fall when the days get short it's the only time I can fish with this dang job and all.
I think it was Sacandaga or Great Sacandaga...

I too have seen some wierd things fishing at night. It's kind of cool, I think.
The next day I just blame it on the case of beer and smokes!

I swear those beavers will be the death of me. My heart doesn't come back to normal pace for at least 15 minutes after they flop. DARN THINGS, I HATE IT WHEN THEY DO THAT. :)

I know exactly what you're saying about the beavers. I used to fish close to a river bridge and late at night there would come the giagantic splash!! I thought for years that it was some wise a** es tossing stones over the bridge at me. Later I finally realized the truth that it was Mister Beaver.

Their baaack!! I swear this is real. I was out last night catfishin and set my camera on its self timer and shot this pic of myself waiting for a bite. I was stunned when I loaded the photo files onto my computer and saw casper hovering over me like willow-the-wisp. Thank god I didn't see the beastie thing I might have fainted away or run madly through the woods in fear.

Big Walleye,
                                    I can relate!!!!!
I was fishing L.G. a few years ago for bullheads and my boys and I were sitting there and all of a sudden it sounded like somebody hurled a boulder near us.I told my boys ignore it some kids are just having some fun.It was dark and we really couldn't see alot and every now and again the spash would be near us.I was getting uneasy and when I got out the flash light and checked around the shoreline I discovered what appeared as a couple of irrate beavers. They were so close we decided to let them have the fishing spot.

Used to fish the Cannonsville Res. in NY at night for bullhead.  People that would fish there during the day for browns would toss any carp they caught onto the bank.  Well, this would draw the black bears in to feed on the carcasses.  They were always pretty good at sneaking up close on us in the wee hours of the morning!!  The slightest snap of a twig would scare the tar out of us!

This is sort of funny, actually. I was about 8 years old and I was walking to a secret lake in the wilderness with my dad and brother. Well, I was about 40 yards ahead and around the next bend, so they couldn't see me because the trees and brush were so thick. Well, I heard a sound in the bushes and I looked over and I was not more than 15 ft. from a 200 pound black bear. With both ran in opposite directions at the same time!!! That's another reason why I am TroutFishingBear, because I come close up to bears quite often without knowing it; I have a knack for it.

That's scary Trout Fishing Bear. Once I was riding my mountain bike up a fire road in Montana, and saw a black bear next to a gate. It stood up on it's hind legs to get a better look at me and waved. I know it wasn't a real wave, it just looked like it. Then, he took off down the mountain.

It dosen't have to be late at night for the creepy crawlers to hit. Was out earlier this evening for some catfish. I got plenty but that's not the story. It had been one of those days when you see a guy backing his van into your truck and you just say go on you A hole bam, sorry I didn't see you, well pay attention! and that was a good part of the day. So I'm out gettin cat after cat and drinkin' a beer. I opened 4 cause I figured that I might need a few +1. The cats have made the switch from cut bait to chicken livers that's why I opened the beers before I baited up. Don't want to accidentally ingest anything worse than medical waste, come to think of it, you should have to have a lisence to use chicken livers. Anyway, I get the lanterns lighted in between fish and finish a beer before tossing out the next round.
The first rod goes fine but, just as I am about to fire the second a big a$$ mosquito bites my neck I lurch and feel the fragile liver pull off my hook, I vaguely hear it land behind me but am too annoyed to pay attention. Before I rebait I get out the Cutter. Probably a bad move because it acts like mosquito viagra and the little pricks were worse than ever. Loss of blood was beginning to take its toll. I flirted with changing my screen name to Wes Nyle for a moment but was brought back to reality by the rather large peice of debris in the huge swallow of beer I undertook. I immediately assumed that it was a garden slug, no problem, a little slimey protien isn't lethal is it? It was right about then that I remembered the chicken liver that flew off on my cast. So here I am getting ready to write my last will and testement, hoping to make it to my 50th birthday. Meanwhile Oprahman is sitting under some tiki hut drinking Sloegin Fizzes watching mosquitoes get zapped in the bug zapper.

The Easter Egg Story. This has taken some time to get together and I am sure that it was not worth the wait. Several weeks ago I was out with the boys fishin for cats on the Susquehanna River. We were drinkin and fishin havin' a good ole time. These were new friends but they had already noticed that I am a bit weird! I tend to find things and collect them and take them home with me, old boards, deer skulls, turtle shells, doll's appendages, whatever I happen to take a fancy to. The river is prime findin' territory and this night was no exception. Shortly after findin' a 'possum playin' 'possum. I noticed this red plastic Easter Egg in the mud by one of my rods. After passing by this choice trinket several times I couldn't take it anymore. I reached down and hefted the egg. There was some weight there so I gave it a shake half expecting to feel the dead weight of river mud. To my surprise the egg rattled sharply. Now my curiosity was aroused. Expecting to find someones drug stash I tried to open the egg but couldn't crack open the shell. I handed it off to Operaman who popped the thing open with no effort at all. Inside was a penny and the brief little note that is featured in the scan I posted. I contacted the owner of the egg and tried to get him interested in getting our respective local newspapers to do a small story on the unusual event but the guy didn't seem too interested. Anyway I posted his responce to my letter and you can be sure that no easter eggs are going to be getting past me on the Susquehanna River anytime soon.

One trip some buddies and I got real wasted when mother nature called. I went outside and I swear I saw freaking sheep everywhere. Now I am in the middle of nowhere and I'm plastered seeing freaking sheep,. My buddies thought I was nuts. the next day sure enough the owner of the resort had hauled in some sheep to keep control of the grass.Anything happens when you go fishing!!!

That's pretty cool that it made it that far.  80+ miles is a long way not to get snagged on brush, washed up on shore or shallowed by some random fish.

I once found a balloon from British Columbia with a little girls address, I wrote to her and apparently it was released 2 years prior.  ???

About aliens and what not, I usually will listen to someone's "sightings" story, think about it a little bit, and then figure they are full of it, but here is a true story of an unidentified flying object that me and my buddy seen while driving up north last fall. And I am telling you EXACTLY what we saw. So tell me what this could have been:

So it's a cool fall day, the wind was blowing strong and the sky was full of big, dark clouds. Just patches of them as far as you could see. Me and my buddy Tim were heading up to Northern Michigan to St. Helen for the weekend to where he had a cabin about 10 miles from town. We had already got off the expressway, went through St. Helen and heading East to his cabin.  Crusing down the two lane highway, we get out into a large field that surrounds both sides of the road.  A few houses are on the North side of the road maybe twenty yards off the road or so, behind them a power line that ran paralell with the road. I was gazing off to the side of the road, looking at the cloud formations as they quickly moved across the sky when I looked up above the power line and noticed this large tractor trailer sized object just hovering above the tree line.  "What in the hell is that? What is that Tim? No man, what is that?" I exclaimed. At first I just thought maybe it was some kind of water tower or maybe something on the power line. Wanting to get a better look at it, I began slowing down. As soon as I started applying the brakes  and decelerating, the object almost seemed to notice me and suddenly started picking up speed and I mean REALLY picking up speed. In a perfectly straight line too. It was strange because it went from a totally still hover to just cruising across the sky in maybe 3 seconds.  As the object headed West, still maintaining the same altitude, A large weeping willow tree blocked our view so I pulled a quick U-turn in the road and started heading west with the object but once we got past the willow and could clearly see, the sky was just full of clouds again. So I ask Tim, "What do you think that was?" He says, "Maybe some kind of helicopter or something" ,"I don't know," I said, "How would a helicopter just sit perfectly still in the air and then gain that much speed?" I also had the window down at the time and never did hear any kind of accelerating noise, just the wind.We then turned down a dirt road and headed North to see if maybe we could spot the object again, nothing but clouds. The rest of the weekend me and Tim wondered what the hell that was in the sky, maybe military or  some kind of plane, We don't really know. It sure didn't look like a plane. It almost did look like the tell tale sight of a UFO. Large and oval shaped. To this day, don't know what it was. And this story was told entirely true, just as we seen it. And no, I am not some weird X-files Star Trek freek, I am just telling the story as it happened. Maybe not an alien, maybe the military, or some new plane,  but to me and Tim it was unidentified to us.

Hmmmm, black helicopters...maybe? There are dozens of things that happen every day that science has no logical reason for. If they can't explain it, they dismiss it as someone sniffing too much silly putty. Who knows, someday we might have proof that all those scientists are really the ones sniffing the putty and some of the strange sightings were really some kind of life form. Until then I will continue to read the stories and keep an open, but cautious, mind and laugh my @$$ off when it happens to someone else.  ;D

On that note, I have a cute story. Its not related to X Files, but it is kind of funny. Years ago my cousin Chris and I were deer hunting a 1000 acre patch of timber near where we live. This place was huge and it was possible to get lost easily and there was no such thing as a GPS. We usually had to get parked by 4:30am to walk the mile and a half to our stands. This particular morning it was foggy as H as we started walking toward our stands. About 40 minitues into the walk I left Chris to go toward his stand and I continued toward mine. Somewhere along the line I took a wrong turn and ended up in the wrong draw. As I was standing at the bottom of the draw looking up trying to figure out where I was, I caught a glimpse of a small silhouette at the top of the draw as by this time it was just light enough to see the horizon break up the top of the hill. The silhouette disappeared so I wrote it off as my eyes playing tricks on me. Just a few seconds later I heard very loud growling among other things very close to me in the area of where I saw the silhouette. I instantly froze not knowing what it was or exactlly where it was and what it was growling at. The only thing I can relate it to was two alley cats fighting, but ALOT louder. I started considering my options. Keep in mind I only had my deer rifle with me and I had come to the conclusion that it woud be virtually useless since it was pitch black in the bottom where I was. I decided that running wasn't an option. I also decided that my rifle would make a better club than a defensive weapon. As luck would have it whatever it was stopped growling and moved away from me. I stood there motionless for what seemed like hours waiting for daylight. When I was satisfied that I could see well enough to move, I walked to where I saw the initial silhouette and found large cat like tracks. There was 2 different sets. We determined that they were Bobcat tracks and I had encountered a pair of them fighting over something.

This story is funny enough, but the next day it got even funnier. Of course, I told Chris what had happened and we discussed the incident at length. The next morning when I left him as I had done the day before and while he was walking toward his stand he saw something that scared the $ out of him and stood motionless until he could see well enough to identify what he saw. When it got light enough he identified a log with cat like ears on it.  ;D He would have never seen that had it not been for my experience.  ;D

From that day since I have also carried a centerfire handgun either a 45 or a 40 and have never seen or heard anything since.

I dated a girl once that had a 10 year old daughter that kept telling us that she saw a little girl in her grampa's house. Her grampa lived in a trailer court and she would describe a little girl wearing a long dress and a hat with ribbons on it. She said the little girl would mouth words to her and hold her hands out to her, but she would never speak. At first I thought she was just making up stories and I was skeptical, but mind you this went on for 5 years before we dated and for the 2 years we were dating. The description never changed down to the last detail. One night we were sitting in the living room having a few drinks and talking. Her son and daughter were sound asleep in the spare bedroom. While we were sitting there a ball rolled down the hallway and past the doorway to the livingroom. The ball was a small vinyl one about 6 or 7 inches in diameter similar to a miniture beach ball, but much heavier. I watched it roll thinking that it was one of the kids playing when they were supposed to be sleeping. I got up and began walking toward the hallway and the ball rolled back acrossed the doorway and toward the sleeping children. I went into the hallway and there was no ball. I went into the room where the kids were sleeping and both were indeed sound asleep. I searched for the ball and the ball was sitting on a box full of toys in the corner of the bedroom. I was drinking, but I wasn't intoxicated or anywhere close. If that had happened once I could have written it off as being a little suspicious, but that exact incident had been reported by my girlfriend to me months before I had ever stepped foot in his house. That is the only time I ever witnessed that particular incident. After seeing this I began researching  the area where the trailer court was through the county records and discovered that prior to the trailer park being built there was a small cemetery there. The bodies of the deceased in that cemetery were moved nearly 50 years before the trailer park was built due to a flooding problem. Among the names listed in the original cemetery plot was a 5 year old little girl that died from an undisclosed illness back in the late 1800's.

If there was a part of me that was a skeptic, seeing this. along with the other details that I dug up made me a believer. Like I stated in a previous post, just because science has no logical explanation for something doesn't automatically mean that it doesn't exist. You can choose to believe or not, its up to you. To be absolutely honest I wouldn't believe a shread of it had it not been for my personal observation. I now believe anything is possible.

OK one night a cople years ago I was sitting on the couch watching TV, the kids and the wife were asleep and the show was some kind of unsolved haunting show or something like that, and during one of the most bone-chilling stories the dust buster in my kitchen came on for a few seconds and then shut off. I could fell my hair stand straight up on my head.  :o I knew I had to walk out to take a look, and it was sitting in it's recharger like it always is.  :o (my hair stood straight up again). I have no idea why it came on like that and it has never happened since. I know this isn't fishing related but I don't have any good fishing stories to tell.

Man.... :o :o :o That is a freaky one. And see, I am more comforted by the thought of aliens then the thought of ghosts. That is pretty freaky.  I could almost believe aliens more than ghosts, but like you say, I have not encountered a ghost yet so it is hard to believe. But I guess I do believe there are aliens, I just don't get all sci-fi over it.  In my opinion, we are here so why can't there be something else somewhere that is more technologically advanced.....ok, I said I wasn't getting all sci-fi now so I'll stop ;D

Have any of you people experinced St. Elmo's fire? On hot August nights on peat moss swamps the peat in the water gives off methane gas which apparently glows flourescent green at night.Man the first time my buddy and I saw it we were catfish'in and drinkin a few brewski's and listning to the owls hooting in the woods. All of a sudden we heard a bobcat scream(which will scare the bejesus out of you)and noticed these green balls of light rising out of the swamp next to us.A couple of them came right at us and disappeared into thin air.Well after just about soiling a new pair of skivies we decided to hightail it out of there. The next day we asked an old timer who lives in the area if he had ever seen anything like that. And that is when he told us about St. Elmo's fire. It's amasing what the mind will conjure up on a dark night.

Another time walking out of a lake, we saw a lot of eyes and things because it was dark. We knew they were coyotes because of the yipping noises they were making but it was still kind of creepy

A guy I used to work with got a picture of one in his pasture near Sweet Valley.  He called the Game Comm. out because he was losing livestock.  When he told them he thought it was a Mountain Lion the said it was not possible and they do not inhabit this state.  Then he showed the officer the picture of the cat in his pasture.  The officer then said that he would never admit it publicly but the state released 9 mating pairs of mountain lions in PA to help control the whitetail population. :o  Another example of genius at work in our Game Comm. ::)

X-Files are back. I have two oddities to report they fit here better than anywhere else so here goes. I was fishin for cats sunday night right here.

Nice scenery, a mountain with a cliff face at sunset. Jigwiggler knows. He can see a similar sight out his back porch everyday. Well it got dark and I got busy catchin cats. After a while, I took a breather, cracked a beer, and surveyed my riverine domain.  My eyes followed the silhouette of the mountain south down stream. They were stopped by lights glaring through the trees on the ridge above me. Someone had built a house on the top of the mountain directly across from one of my semi secret hot spots. That just sucked! It wasn't just a cabin this was one or them two story glass faced jobs and it look like they had every light in the house on. Well that is progress. I went back to fishin and tried not to think about the intruders, probably watchin' me at this very moment. The fish were bittin' real good and I forgot about the scar on my wilderness for a while. Then, after having a solo catfish double header I stopped for ,you guessed, another beer. I took a hearty slug and let my eyes wander over to see THE MOON rising above the mountain top. What a sight!!!!!!!!

 I have wondered, at times as well, what that bright white light peeking over the horizon is, only to realize a few minutes later that it is the moon too.

That was so good I had to let it stand alone. My other x-file experience happened a little later that same night. I had moved to another spot cause the moonrise had killed the fishing at the first place. I drove downriver about a mile and pulled into a recently flooded parking lot and was immediatly mired in river mud. Having been in this situation before I stopped and locked my hubs so I could slide sideways backwards toward firmer ground. With my truck parked safely near the road I walked across the muddy lot and down to the river between two cottages. This place is loaded with springs and the recent flood had saturated the ground. The mud was nearly sucking my boots of with every step. So it was in this quagmire that I sat my tired butt down onto a 5 gallon pail and cracked a well deserved beer. It wasn't long before I had my first cat, only by now, I'm so exhausted that I don't even care. I release the fish and sit back down. As I look out over the river I see a flashlight coming from behind me. I quickly assume that it is the fish warden here to give me a ticket for drinking a beer at 10:00 pm on fish comm. property.  Then a more sinister thought fills my mind. What if it's a state cop who thinks I am looting one of the cottages. In any case no one showed up to arrest me. On my way home I was driving down a dirt road when a pick-up truck came by spotting deer in some fields. Another possibility?

I saw the story of the Allagash Abductions on unsolved mysteries as well. Boy did I freak when a low flying light slowly approached the lake, shining off the water much as the so called alien spacecraft did in the Allagash incident. I was shaking in my shoes, sweating, and my heart pounding into my throat until it got directly above me, and then I finally heard the engine and knew it was just a plain.
Anyone ever see the movie "The Intruders'? That movie scared me to death. The only movie that ever really scared me.

Havin' some fun and testing my photo server at the same time. I was out for cats with Heartburn/Oprahman last week and got this dead alien. We think its flying saucer crashed in the river after Oprahman blinded it with his giga candlepower mag lite. Considered takin' it home and cook it up but my wife woulda kilt me.
Here is the beasties picture took by the windburned one his self.
